That would be a hit back to all those people, but also feel sad for those who bought it above retail. At the end if this brings more new watch people its amazing. Still its an amazing watch to own in any collection.
At first I wanted one, but now I have no interest. I remember when Timex came out with the Q Reissue there was a lot of hype, of course nothing approaching this, but you could not get the watch and people were selling them on ebay for triple the price. However, with the Timex Q which is my favorite watch you got a stainless steel quality watch and not a plastic toy. Funny thing is when I wear my pepsi bezel Q a couple of people thought it was a Rolex.
Same for me.. when they first came out, I wanted one and even got my wife and 2 sons to choose one so we could have one each. Obviously couldn't get them, now the hype has gone, we not bothered if we get one or not. Not actively looking either.
I’ve owned 4 different variations of the Speedy - Hesalite, Sapphire, Racing, and Coaxial, and I thought the MoonSwatch was a gimmick. I picked up the Mercury on a lark and I have to admit, it nearly gives me the same feeling as the authentic Speedy except you feel pretty clever because you haven’t had to spend thousands of dollars.
P.T. Barnum quotes still ring true! Seriously, years ago I purchased a limited production Swatch made for a famous camera, 10+ yrs later, the plastic band yellowed & broke at the lugs. At least the watch still works but I can't place any other band on it. I enjoyed all the hype though!
I’d still love to get one but unless they do something about making it accessible I think my interest and lots of other people’s will fade quickly. If Swatch want to get in on hype culture they need to understand how quickly it fades...
No need to actually even put quotations, my casio does everything that the moonswatch couldn’t(except the chrono function) for way less money i still wanna own a moonswatch

I have an Omega Speedmaster Professional .861. I guess it's one of the first conversions from the .321. As a student at FIT during the Apollo mission years in 1970, I recall one other fraternity brother having the same pre-lunar Omega. Mine was given to me by my girlfriend who worked at Bamberger's (now Macy's) and got as a BD gift for me, for a 20% discount and paid $275.00 U.S. for it. She gave it to me as a BD gift only 10 days after Buzz Aldrin wore his on the moon on July 20, 1969. Now I keep it in my safe and only wear it occasionally. I guy who owns a medical company and flies his own jet offered to buy it from me. I don' think I want to sell it. I told my son to make sure my year-and-a-half-old grandson gets to wear it and never sells it. Imagine what a real pre-lunar Speedmaster will be worth when my grandson is in his thirties, assuming civilization makes it that far?
4:26 “So what makes this Watch worth $260?” This is an interesting question - because the cost/value of this MoonSwatch is most likely more closely aligned with its intrinsic materials and manufacturing costs than say an Omega, IWC, Rolex whose retail prices are 90% marketing, brand equity and celebrity ambassador costs…
Good story. There's a lot of truth to what you say. When people says it will dilute the Omega brand it really depends on where Omega wants to position their products. Without a doubt it appears that they're moving to the premium market and the prices of their watches reflects that. Then making a $200 sub product does not do the brand any good. It is like Hermes or LV all of a sudden makes a plastic bag for $100. I believe they would never do that😂
But LV has lol....what you mean is it is like Hermes or LV doing a collaboration with HnM or Zara or Uniqlo. They will never do that. But these days, you. never know. Louis Vuitton collaborated with Nike under Virgil Abloh and a pair of those shoes go for half a million now in the market. The quality has to be there for it to be worth it.
I went to Miami for vacation and for giggles I called the Miami swatch, and I hear yeah we have them. Dropped my luggage and Uber to the store. Love my mission to mars!
Not sure why people expecting Omega quality watch in this peace. Its a toy just for fun, a band, in best swatch tradition. Wish it was smaller size.. but still a nice peace.
I saw the interview that the Swatch CEO did pre launch and how they were talking about doing in store because the world was opening back up and it would get people out shopping. It kind of warmed my heart, for about a day when it was quickly realized he was saying all these things knowing very well what they were doing. This launch was all centered around this years Watches Of Wonders event. You know who wasn’t represented at that event? Omega….and Swatch of course. Yet, just a few days prior they make this announcement…..it wasn’t coincidence. The two biggest stories to come from the event were the left handed Rolex GMT, and the MoonSwatch. They could not have gotten that much publicity had they purchased the largest booth there.
It's cereal box watch--let's all not kid ourselves please. Is it fun? Yes. But it's no watch. It's garbage. It will die within 9 months of ownership...if you don't break it first.
Man, these looked sick! Too bad people bought them all out, and are now selling them for 5 times the price, so i’ll just save up for a automatic speedmaster :/
I think the watch looks great, what turns me off is the consumeristic frenzy that it generated. Seeing people all frantic, desperate, and lining up for hours; the way people lined up for bread during the world wars is a massive turn off. Makes me cringe at how embarrassing it is that a small good-looking plastic watch can trigger the same survival instincts as refugees.
OMG you summed it up perfectly !! Can you belive it? Lining up to buy a plastic freaking watch as if it was their last supper.?!! There is No doubt in my mind that humanity is going downhill from here.
I was going to get the mission to Mercury model. But, after seeing this craze, I then went to do some research and found a beautiful Rado Diamaster Automatic. Not only that the material is highly (almost) scratch-resistant, it's also automatic - meaning I don't have to change any batteries and just take it to service every 5-7 years. And also, 5 bar of water resistance. I mean, both Swatch and Rado are owned by the Swatch Group and made in Switzerland... I must say personally, it's better to have a Rado.
This is up there as one of Hodinkee’s biggest chuff pieces. The lack of availability, the quality control issues, lack of repairability. Those Omega and Swatch checks must be real nice.
some interested in the actual watch as watch lovers, more for the hype, and majority were there to flip them imo. I think that's where the negative feeling towards this moonswatch comes from (at least from me). As a speedmaster owner I wouldn't mind having one of these as a daily driver for any type of outdoors activity where I wouldnt want to wear my speedmaster but seeing the prices on ebay for these makes me cringe. Hopefully swatch will release these online sooner than later instead of milking the hype as long as it has gone thus far.
Some strange comments here, this is probably one of the most historic watch events to happen in a long long time. And I’m a collector and I think it’s brought about a lot of positive and negative talk but it’s brought it to the masses. Everyone who owns an omega can try to deny it but it’s a budget omega speedmaster made with swatch materials. For 200 pounds you can’t get so much heritage in a watch. We will never all agree because we all come from different watch collecting spaces so I wouldn’t try to convince anyone. But for me, what I see, is an omega speedmaster made by swatch. No doubt it’s not a stainless steel speedy but it’s a speedy. As is the speedmaster reduced and many others in between. None of these watches actually went to the moon, they are all based on the actual watches from back then. Sure some are more akin to the OG and some not. But they are all omegas and they are all speedys.
Good logic and you can't be more correct. But for the sake of communication if someone mentions Speedy I will still assume they are not talking about Moonswatch.
Swatch should have really held off on the release until they have millions of these watches ready. They would have made a killing. I had two on my list to buy week 1 but now after the hype and seeing the reviews on build quality, I don't want any. They did great with the marketing but dropped the ball on supply.
Answering the question of whether the moonswatch release could diminish the speedmaster brand doesn’t make sense by just showing they are a different quality and feel. It’s about how a lower tier watch collab may impact the original ………
Lost the momentum, still no watches where i’m from as they only ship 20 or so 2-3 days a week. The launch was a mess and still is a mess. The goal of having an accessible alternative completely backfired!
This watch goes against everything i like about watches. I love watches because they are high quality mechanical sculptures that can theoretically last forever. The Moonswatch has none of these, its a disposable fashion item that gets damaged if you look at it wrong.
Omega is creating artificial hype by releasing a product with a lot of demand, and limiting its availability. They took a page right out of Rolex, AP and Patek's books. I guess they felt left out but hey, it's doing wonders for the brand...
The moon’s’watch is the epitome of hedonism. I’ll probably never own one, because neither do I believe in standing in queues to buy mass market consumer products; nor do I believe in paying artificially inflated prices for the same. It’s the same reason I don’t buy latest iPhones on launch day. And it is compounded by the fact that I have too much pride, and too little money 😜
Love it, want one or two. Buggered if I'm paying the scumbag flippers tho, I'll only pay retail & not going to London ( awful place) & risking having my Seamaster nicked just to get one. ... thought the launch was a mess personally, they'd have sold many more if it was online only - as it is the only people benefiting are those scumbag flippers.
This watch was never for me. I’m glad that it got some people interested in watches. The drop culture and challenge to get it are for sure some of the big call to those hype beasts.
Kind of annoyed that so many non watch people had to run out and buy one or several. Like if you haven’t spent part of your life wishing you could afford a real speed master, why would this watch even interest you? I’m a watch guy who only wears mechanical watches and has wished for a real speedmaster for years. This watch really excited me but I’m still trying to get over the fact that it’s quartz.
Every morning I open my watch boxes to pick a watch for day and funny enough my MoonSwatch Mission to the Sun with a rainbow nato get the most wrist time right now,
I wanted one. I thought about being in queue on release day, but fortunately, I had other plans. Now, I honestly don't even want a MoonSwatch. Perhaps if someone GAVE one to me, I would keep it. But knowing what I know today, why would anyone pay anything close to retail for this watch? It's a plastic toy watch with Omega branding on it. A marketing gimmick that is sure to eventually lead to buyers remorse. No thanks.
I was wearing my speedy yesterday on the tube and an idiot with this plastic watch said we had the same thing on our wrists and how fortunate we were. I smiled and said, you have a homage which is made of plastic but mine is steel and made it to the moon! Your homage wouldn’t make it past training an astronaut let alone space but keep dreaming and one day you might have the real thing. I swear he looked like he was going to cry! 🤯 how anyone can compare a toy watch to the actual thing is beyond me. This toy is like buzz light year that destroyed many a Christmas’s in the 1990s and now they are anywhere and everywhere!
You sound like a really unhappy person. I hope you can just enjoy watches and other people's happiness in the future and don't have to ridicule them...
Yeah I waited for the hype to die down and ended up getting a new “moon” one free from a good friend. It’s great as a daily alternative to a nicer watch. I have a Reverso but I’ve worn the moonswatch every day for a week and love it- I previously owned a speedy with the panda mitsokushi and it was amazing, but this still has a real speedy feel. Is the quality as good as a g shock or Seiko? No but that’s not the point. This is a fun cheap plastic watch. People who paid silly money for them are either rich enough not to care or silly. People who queued for days to get them can do what they want with them- it’s an insane hobby that makes no sense, why do people take it so seriously?! There’s no shortage of watches as every price point, nobody needs any particular watch. Just get another one and stop being bitter 😂
The Moonswatch didnt devalue Omega . It rather reminded people of Swatch being a producer of plastic quartz watches. Meant to be worn until they break. Toss it and buy a new one. I wonder if people wake up and realize what they spent their 250$ on. Omega on their part are used to research new materials and sell expensive special moonwatch versions. That BIOCERAMIC mumbo jumbo is a joke. Its soft , cheap plastic you can indent with your nail. That might tarnish Omegas believability ....
Dany, is your skin actually grey, as if you came from outer space (quite appropriately for presenting this line of watch), or is this a weird special effect from your in-house video team ? 🤔
Hi Teddy, I've been contemplating buying the MoonSwatch when it arrives online in Sweden. However, from what I have seen, one thing I think might be subpar is the strap. What is your opinion about it? and what alternatives would you recommend if anyone considers changing it? I know you had a couple in the video, and unfortunately, I don't know which watch I might get my hands on.
Only so many suckers will over pay for this watch. If Swatch can't make it readily available online the interest will disappear. For watch geeks I think it already has.
This is probably the 1st Hodinkee video I've watched that the presenter seems to think he's talking to non-watch enthusiasts. And, The Complete Story? I came here looking for a documentary-esque run down, but instead found just the opinions of an individual, not unlike a plethora of other videos online. Standards have dropped, Hodinkee.
Just picked up the Jupiter watch today. Went to a Swatch Store here in Vancouver. I used my British accent to my advantage to pretend I was a tourist .. only here for a short time. Thus alaying fears i might be a flipper. Well .. not sure if that was necessary .. but when I first came to the store they said they had none. Then after an hour and a half of walking around I came back and wouldn't you know it .. they had a Jupiter! :D Oddly enogh another guy came by eyeing it up and was enquiring how much it was and before the sales guy could answer I said "I'll take it!". I would have preffered a Mercury .. or an Earth ... but .. I have to say the Jupiter is very nice .. and works exceptionally well on a dessert Khaki Haveston Nato strap.

This has 2 sides of the coin...flippers and grey market hurts the industry, we can clearly see it here. I hope this isn't limited and in the future they can sell it online. That would be a hit back to all those people, but also feel sad for those who bought it above retail. At the end if this brings more new watch people its amazing. Still its an amazing watch to own in any collection.
Was looking forward to get one. No stock. Ended up with an automatic Seiko 5
Turned out for the best then! ;-)
A refreshingly articulate take on the recent ‘Moonswatch’ phenomenon.
Couldnt agree more, I love my Q timex
I’ve owned 4 different variations of the Speedy - Hesalite, Sapphire, Racing, and Coaxial, and I thought the MoonSwatch was a gimmick. I picked up the Mercury on a lark and I have to admit, it nearly gives me the same feeling as the authentic Speedy except you feel pretty clever because you haven’t had to spend thousands of dollars.
“This ain’t no speedmaster” Well it is but just a different one 😉😂
EVERY Swatch claims to be "affordable" but I've yet to see one that tips me toward paying as much as they cost for what they provide. Any Swatch.
If you need a "quality" cheap watch it's Casio all the way!
No lies were spoken
No need to actually even put quotations, my casio does everything that the moonswatch couldn’t(except the chrono function) for way less money
i still wanna own a moonswatch
Somehow a $6k watch is more available than a $260 watch.
To be fair, the market for a $260 watch is a lot larger than a $6000 watch. Usually the more expensive the item, the buying audience gets smaller and smaller.
@@kevinmiser7877 That's correct but shouldn't supply of a cheaper good be able to keep up with demand too?
@@MrSaiwen somehow with this publicity stunt they never expected the demand to be so big. Wouldn’t surprise me that they are deliberately short supplying them. They are now pulling out of online sale
Swatch really missed out on the hype train. They should have been ready to go with the online release.... Maybe quality control issues?
It's great to get a new generation of people into watches. Also, what a bunch of whiny little babies in this comment section!
Heck of a video, Danny and team.
Ahhh Danny! This was such a fabulous video! I loved this. :) a breath of fresh air
„It ain‘t no Speedmaster“ - it says “Speedmaster” right on the dial. The MoonSwatch IS a canon Speedmaster now.
Will it last longer then a week ? Please RECYCLE !
I guess they will earn the "Speedmaster" name based on how fast they will break.
It's cereal box watch--let's all not kid ourselves please. Is it fun? Yes. But it's no watch. It's garbage. It will die within 9 months of ownership...if you don't break it first.
Exactly what the world needed... more plastic, euh Bioceramic. Will it last longer then a week ? Please RECYCLE !
Oh Lawd it hurts me so much to see ungraded A Roll footage
Was up for it, but not going to bother now, took too long
Beautiful story I loved your end quote ❤️ Watches Endure
I can see the flaws in both these watches. The Mars watch has a dot on the dial below the word Swatch and the Jupiter watch is scratched.
It was a brilliant marketing campaign. As for the watch itself, it's plastic and fun.
Well done 👍
It's Bioceramic when you own one , Plastic if you don't.
Swatch should have really held off on the release until they have millions of these watches ready. They would have made a killing. I had two on my list to buy week 1 but now after the hype and seeing the reviews on build quality, I don't want any. They did great with the marketing but dropped the ball on supply.
Moonwatch > moonswatch
I met someone wearing a Royal Oak: My interest with the Casioak plummeted. Omega will be fine.
Cool little trinkets and great marketing and that's about it. These should never have caused the level of madness that we currently see.
This is something Tag Heuer would do.
The hype is starting to die down. They’ll definitely get more sales in if it was accessible to public to buy online a week after the first release.
You can get another legend moon watch with a smoother sweep that even the original Omega Speedmaster for that price.
The Bulova Lunar Pilot.
Answering the question of whether the moonswatch release could diminish the speedmaster brand doesn’t make sense by just showing they are a different quality and feel. It’s about how a lower tier watch collab may impact the original ………
Highly theoretical video: no mention of non-availability, quality etc.
What does he know about that...
G Shock > MoonSwatch . Save urself a ton
I am getting a mission to Mars. Where can I get the white nylon strap in the video? Thanks
Lost the momentum, still no watches where i’m from as they only ship 20 or so 2-3 days a week. The launch was a mess and still is a mess. The goal of having an accessible alternative completely backfired!
It’s a richardmille version of the speedy , lightweight af
I was able to get mine in Miami Beach, got mars and went to a watch repair shop across the street to get a leather red starp
This watch goes against everything i like about watches. I love watches because they are high quality mechanical sculptures that can theoretically last forever. The Moonswatch has none of these, its a disposable fashion item that gets damaged if you look at it wrong.
Haven’t seen the Mars yet but I feel I would have the same sentiment 10:20
Best review yet ! Wear it change battery and go ! Plastic possibly harder to make than 316 stainless steel 😉 fact
Omega is creating artificial hype by releasing a product with a lot of demand, and limiting its availability. They took a page right out of Rolex, AP and Patek's books. I guess they felt left out but hey, it's doing wonders for the brand...
This is definitely a Swatch watch, not Omega!
Would rather own (and I do) a Sistem51.
Link to purchase the strap on hodinkee?
They're not limited editions. Why are they hard to obtain ?
Its funny tho if u have the money its easier to get a “real” speedmaster retail than a moonswatch retail
I bought the sapphire 3861 instead.
What strap do is on that mars moonswatch??
Did they restock yet?
This watch is not meant for everyone. So far , only VIP customer got it . It is also a control stock selling to preferred customers only.
Swatch VIP customer 🤣🤣🤣
@@johnozmen2147 VIP customer with purchase history of lots of brand.
This watch was never for me. I’m glad that it got some people interested in watches. The drop culture and challenge to get it are for sure some of the big call to those hype beasts.
Awesome by Omega Watch brand brings the younger Generation into the watch world 🌎 👌
People who are surprised by the hype have never tried to buy a pair of Jordan's
Kind of annoyed that so many non watch people had to run out and buy one or several. Like if you haven’t spent part of your life wishing you could afford a real speed master, why would this watch even interest you?
I’m a watch guy who only wears mechanical watches and has wished for a real speedmaster for years. This watch really excited me but I’m still trying to get over the fact that it’s quartz.
I called Hodinkee today to buy a $7K watch and they hung up on me because I would not leave a message and wait for a "remote" person to call me back.
Just had a guy try to sale me a seiko 5 cement for 325. Told me It was moonwatch.
Every morning I open my watch boxes to pick a watch for day and funny enough my MoonSwatch Mission to the Sun with a rainbow nato get the most wrist time right now,
😂
A slap in the face to all Omega Speedy owners. A marketing gimmick. Plastic trash in a dash for cash from Swatch.
Queue and hype for a "BATTERY POWERED, PLASTIC QUARTZ" watch??? No thank you. People are fool, Swatch is smart.
The genital resemblance at the 12 O'Clock sticks out like a sore thumb. 😂
The best part of the swatch moon watch is the wrist stains 😄🤣🤣🤫🤢
I wanted one. I thought about being in queue on release day, but fortunately, I had other plans. Now, I honestly don't even want a MoonSwatch. Perhaps if someone GAVE one to me, I would keep it. But knowing what I know today, why would anyone pay anything close to retail for this watch? It's a plastic toy watch with Omega branding on it. A marketing gimmick that is sure to eventually lead to buyers remorse. No thanks.
I wonder the rate of flippers that actually succeeded in selling them. Nobody seems to want them anymore, and few still talk about it.
Hahaha. That's funny
Swatch just copied Supreme’s release strategy and it worked beautifully.
Sell me
The Jupiter one !
Hi Teddy,
I've been contemplating buying the MoonSwatch when it arrives online in Sweden.
I'll stick with my trusted Casios...thank you.
Oddly enogh another guy came by eyeing it up and was enquiring how much it was and before the sales guy could answer I said "I'll take it!".
I would have preffered a Mercury .. or an Earth ... but .. I have to say the Jupiter is very nice .. and works exceptionally well on a dessert Khaki Haveston Nato strap.
People paying over retail for a non-LE MoonSwatch simply have more money than brain. Considering how inexpensive these are, really says about how little brain they have.
Unfortunately some people do have more money than brain. How could that be 🤔
I'd rather buy a replica watch
