Been playing beginner-intermediate harmonica for years... you're patience, style and humor have truly re-invigorated my interest in getting better.. Love your lessons.. can't get enough..... Thanks
ive been playing saxophone all my life. i picked up harmonica after my baby was born out of fear the much louder sax could hurt his eardrums. i initially saw the lil harp as a fun toy just to have something to blow until baby grows a bit. wrong! great instrument. i find myself now throwing in hours practicing. wife doesnt seem extremely pleased but baby loves it! u r such a great musician. matt from south korea!
Heck, I might take a week off and then, one evening around nine decide that a little harp is needed. She's on me within two minutes. "Honeeeeeeyyyy!" I'd rather be happily married--and I am--than good on harp. But I lived the other way for many, many years.
Not sure if I told you but when I found you 10 years ago I didn't know you would be giving me a gift that would last a lifetime. Thank you so much for all that you do.
To all raw beginners out there, keep going. I’ve been playing for maybe three or four months, and I can do this. Trust me, with a little bit of time you can as well.
From the beginning you've been my teacher. It began for me when I first picked up a harp, 3 1/2 years ago. With this lesson it happened, everything you've taught suddenly made sense, had a reason. This video pulled all the strings together and added a dab of glue. Thank you Mr. Crash Bang with a groove Gussow.
You're amazing! How did you get through all those years of blues and end up a professor in Mississippi and a RUNNER and you look so healthy? WOW. I listen to Jason Ricci's story and it's a miracle he's even still alive and here you are just kicking it and teaching all us hungry hungry people lovin the harp.....I'm totally amazed. Thanks for giving this awesome gift of not only your talent on the harp, but your amazing ability to teach and articulate your extensive musical knowledge. I bet your university students just love you.
It's worth mentioning that this is a 2nd position and minor pentatonic approach. For anyone wondering, the easiest way to tell it's in 2nd position is because the 2 draw is the root note. If you pull out your C harmonica and play your 2 draw while playing this video you'll be able to tell that it is the root note. For why it's minor pentatonic and not major, it's because of the holes used in the lick. The minor pentatonic scale is -2,-3', 4, -4, -5, 6 The major pentatonic scale is -2, -3", -3, -4, 5, 6 His first little lick he teaches is -3' 4 3 -3' -2 (Note -2 and 3 are the same note) All of those holes are from the minor pentatonic. An interesting little fact is that when he is chugging chords, they're major chords, and when he's playing individual notes, they're from the minor pentatonic scale, yet it still sounds good. This is a great example of the rule "minor is good over major chords but major is bad over minor chords". It's one of the things that makes the harmonica a little more unique.
where were u and youtube 50 ago when i first picked up a harp and quickly began to be able to play o suzanna, dixie, swanne river, etc but not 4 notes of blues. I just couldnt make the "cross" over to blues till i found your site. I think I'm getting it. Gonna freak a few friends out cuz they all know my limited "straight" harp abilities. Thank you so much. Move over Charlie Musselwhite. There's a new old guy comin' for ya. lol
You're a great teacher Adam - you inspire us to do what we thought we couldn't do until you explained it so succinctly! Of course it's within our abilities to become great players but it's people like you who motivate us to persevere & master this amazing instrument. Thank you for your patience & your enthusiasm - it's a godsend!
Great lesson Adam ... Yeah these chords mixed with single notes lessons are the best .... Their really fun to practice and their loaded with the little things that make you a better player .... Thank you .... PS was watching Big Joe Williams do baby please don't go he incorporates a nice style of country blues in his playing which has a nice grove ... Any who keep up the great work your one of the best in the world !!!! ROCK ON !!!!
What a wealth of information from a great teacher! it was great meeting you and going to your classes at the Edinburgh Harmonica Workshops 2016. Got some good selfies with you which I show to my harp buddies, I look so like the Cheshire Cat! Live long and prosper!!
Several reasons I'm enjoying this lesson. First, I'm no longer a beginner so I can fairly easy grasp the concepts and repeat them. Second, I can play this without a backing track. The rhythm carries itself. Lastly, I'm am so looking forward to your next lesson expanding on this rhythm concept. Thank you Adam.
Man that tone! Really hard to believe you can sound that good unamplified. Now I'm going to have to build a woodshed inside my woodshed to quadruple my practice time.
I've been playing guitar for 30 years, and I've always thought about learning blues harp. I seen a couple of your videos that instantly gave me that little surge of adrenaline like the guitar did many years ago. So I just bought a Marine Band harp in D (i like to play my guitar loops in A of course haha) and I'm anxiously waiting to start learning. Love your vids, and look forward to starting out with you. Thanks a bunch :)
Adam, I've had the Powerharp Groove lesson since it came out and still use it to get my embouchure back in shape, or just when I need a little break from work. This is a great revision. Look forward to more as always. Thanks!
That's why you need a teacher! I fought few months to find out how you do that! Finally it came out pretty easy when you know wht is done slowly. Now I have moved from raw beginner to some advanced stage with bending, right ambushures, single notes and vibrattos.
Another Great Video from the Master, thanks again for the helpful lessons. You have a Great reputation & you earned it! I just finished your 3rd Video in this series & left a comment about looking for another Riff to add to your basic Rhythm & POW! here you are with 2 more Riffs I can add to the basic Rhythm = Fantastic! You Rock Adam! ha, all the way to Calif & Back (saw you jam with David Barrett in a video), Jesse from Orlando.
Cool music Adam, always a joy to listen to. I have been playing the harmonica since I was about 7, now learning to play the violin age 55, your song sounds great on the violin as well, just transcribing it. Thanks.
I have played the guitar for years and I all ways wanted to play harp I got good ears so I looked at your vid and I got through 1,2 ,three took about a hour .but I need hours of practice to play clearly I’m up to fantastic . I need to go over it so it’s nice clean thank you so much 😊
Have a C melody sax and working on chromatic harmonica. Both will play concert pitch, as written in my collection of standards, oldies piano books. Backing tracks per Print Music software. A lot of work to do in my soon to be retirement. God Willing, to play at nursing homes and such. Thank you for your helpful technique instruction. Not expecting bending, but great help with breath control and tonguing on these videos. 🇺🇸☦️
My friend and fellow traveler ....I missed you on shellist webinar. You were missing in action...most likely on tour....an I understand.she you in Taylor in the summer....gotta new amp to show you.... That is a tough frkn lick...but you always teach me something new and I thank you for that ....an like a good student...you always make me stop and think.

Just wanted to say thanks and hopefully one day Ill see you at a Event and we can jam together ! stay FLY , Ron in Las Vegas !!!!!!
He is the best on the internet... not sure why he still plays the venerable Marine Band, there are so many other great ones... I find the wood swells up.

Mr Gussow you teach us well thankyou for your time, and sharing what you learned its endless karen
I'm getting the hang of it. I've almost got the blending of the 3 and 4 draw right. I guess I've made more progress than I thought. That's good because I'm itching to get out there making some money on the streets.
Dear Adam, Hard for me not to put too much of 4 draw for the dirt sound when I increase the speed to reach yours! This piece is simply beautiful, thank you for sharing. I love it too cause it's not only a lick but something I can turn with on infinity (I think I've guessed the rest til turnaround :)) ). And now, my neighbours understand the sense of infinity, sorry for them...
Hi Adam! I decided recently that it is time for me to buy a proper harmonica, and decided that a Hohner Marnie Band harmonica in the key of A would be great for me. The only problem is that I do not know if the 1896 model is fully sealed, because swelling is not something I want to happen to my harmonica. i could not find ANY information about whether it is sealed or not. If it isn't, I would have to buy a Crossover, but (at least in my country) it is much, much more expensive. Thank you for reading this far, I really look forward to your response. Sincerely, A faithful subscriber :))
I said this not long ago on different lessons of Adams (secrets to blues harmonica revealed) CHECK THEM OUT PEOPLES!!!!! your making a difference in peoples lives im sure all over the world, all blessings to you Adam Gussow.
Hey Gussow, thank you so much for your lesson, I've been playing for about 6 weeks and feel like I'm flying through them with your excellent teaching style. Quick question; is the next video in this series out? I'd love to have this rhythm down for when my buddy gets back (he's a guitarist). Was trying to figure out if the chords would move up and how the response would sound, as I guess the IV and V end on C and D but am struggling to figure it out. Thanks again for the lessons!
in the 12:40 are you telling about the risk of overblow the 4? by the way! You are my teacher! I already saw many videos, but I'll start to see all of them! I love when you went to a crossroads to teach! thats beautifull! Thank you!

Good! I'm glad I've had that effect.
Here from China . I am really thank you Gussow for video of teaching harmonica
ive been playing saxophone all my life. i picked up harmonica after my baby was born out of fear the much louder sax could hurt his eardrums. i initially saw the lil harp as a fun toy just to have something to blow until baby grows a bit. wrong! great instrument. i find myself now throwing in hours practicing. wife doesnt seem extremely pleased but baby loves it! u r such a great musician. matt from south korea!

After 9pm i find marital happiness is if I woodshed on the front porch with a scotch and soda slightly sweating beside me.
matt man that's the exact same way with me. I've been playing tenor sax for 11 years and I just started playing the harmonica.
That's exactly right. Let the glass sweat.
I must be lucky. My wife doesn't even complain if I practice the didgeridoo after 9pm and I am not good on the didge! lol
Not sure if I told you but when I found you 10 years ago I didn't know you would be giving me a gift that would last a lifetime.

Thanks Adam. Teaching us the language…
I always love the intro music
Great lesson..
GREAT Teacher . THANKS
Damn. I got goosebumps from the intro.
Confirming this is B flat? Appreciate all your help. I just downloaded & printed the groove!
I played the tuba for 30years. had to give it up but my double &triple toughing, and embouchure is good and bad for my harmonica playing.especially the diaphram support I use alot. I'm a lip purser and desperately want develope a rich vibrato. I practice an average of 2 hrs a day for the past 2yrs. but the vibrato I developed on tuba totally does not work for harmonica. any advise would be greatly appreciated. :)

Brilliant
Ciao from Italy !!!!! Great!!!
It is a continuation of this video? Thanks Adam
awesome thank you
FABULOUS
Thx man ! Awesome stuff 👏
Always good!
thanks a lot... really thanks a lot... kinda like a non teacher teaching from emotions and getting that "little" things everyone missed: passion :)
Can somebody write out the tab for the V and IV licks?
love it
THX! where can we find the 2nd part to this?
Holy shit !!!! Nasty !!!!! I want to learn this
Solid.
Adam !!Can you focus in telling us when you are lip pursing versus when you are tongue blocking in regards to rhythm chugging !!🎉❤
Nice !!
Dammit! I'm hooked.
it,s very,very good. I like it!!!!!
Thanks for actually picking up my suggestion. Good lesson! Looking forward to your next video. Thank you Adam.
By the way, for the second part: How about a quarter/half bent 3 draw instead a open 3 draw - makes it even more bluesy, doesn't it?
I'm not sure about that. Sometimes flow and velocity are more important than pitch. But that can work, too.
I would really appreciate tabs for this. The lesson is explained pretty quickly. I have a solid understanding of methods used. But when you say 2 draw 3 blow 4blow 3 draw. That's hard to memorize with out having something to refer to. Thanks.
Damn this guy is good
