Thanks so much for this video! I thought it wouldn't work when I tested the voltages on the MJST pins. I showed "5V, 5V, Grd, Grd," not "12V, 5V, Grd, Grd" like I thought I'd see. But I discovered that most 2.5" drives only use 5V, so it doesn't matter. I'm up and running. Also, if you need to get into the BIOS the default password is Fireport. If that doesn't work, move the jumper (the one close to the power MJST socket) to the other setting for a minute, then put the jumper back to the original setting. This will reset the CMOS. Finally, in case this gives anyone ideas, I riveted the hdd caddy to the underside of the case lid. The rivets are flat enough you can place the hard drive in the caddy without issue.
A tip for anyone using the Micro-JST connector but is having trouble stripping the cables: Go outside with a lighter and burn the insulation, then pull the charred gunk off. Perfect strip - but only for very fine cables, otherwise you are going to have to burn through a LOT of insulation..
No offence,but, Why go to all that trouble when you can open up a san disk or crucial BX 500 ssd take out the board and it fits straight in the slot where the 4gb card already exists..
using a Sata to NGFF M.2 adapter works best. was able to upgrade my 7020 to a 512GB and was able to get the secondary Sata cable for the second Sata channel. thus was able to add a second Sata to NGFF adapter to increase my storage capacity.
Would a male to female SATA extension cable work instead of option one? Even after removing the case my SSD would be too large to fit but I presume I could plug it in with an extension cable?
I have been collecting Thin clients ..i have 2x HP (610and620) Plus 2 Igel Models ..they are all more modern than yours and connecting drives involves very little trouble ...great value compared to a Rasberry . My Dell has an Msata slot ..so i just bought a cheap 30GIG ...they are good value with HD graphics ..DDR3 .. ..USB 3 ports ...Quad core CPU ...you cant go wrong .
If I recall, the Dell/Wyse Z's and HP T610/620 were contemporaries of one another, and used the same AMD G-series APU. I agree that the HPs were slightly more mod-friendly. Both HP and Wyse were good about allowing access to the official OS images, but once Dell took over Wyse, it went downhill and none of the stuff from these older generations is available any longer. Haven't checked into the HPs in several years. Those AMD G APUs were fairly decent low power brains, and still work OK for many things. I'm using one of my last Wyse Z90 units to monitor marine VHF over internet.
Thanks for help. with your instruction I can tested on type WYSE RX0L . install windows on laptop HDD using the power supply in the way as you described (work from first try) . Replaced the 512 mB original RAM with 2 GB... Good test but the machine is very slow ... can't play movies, youtube .... only can play music from HDD ... and for what is good now .... sad on the end...

Update: The Dell FX160 cable I ordered arrived, but unfortunately the power connector half of the cable is too large for the MJST 1.25 on the motherboard. If someone wants to order one of these, it might make for better cable management, but you will still have to splice on an MJST connector like if you were using a Molex converter like in this video.
Had to send your question to Deep Blue but got a reply: "If a PC can run it, the thin client can too because it's an ordinary x64-based CPU, same as any. It won't support ARM or UEFI stuff but anything x86-x64 PC compatible should do fine."

I was using mechanical drives for their cheap cost versus storage size but if you want to use an SSD for the speed it offers, I have done that and it works too."

Under Linux, generic software drivers usually load automatically. There is a setting in the device BIOS which lets you allocate more or less RAM to the integrated video from 64MB up to 1 GB, which you can tweak as well. In answer to your question, these device's Radeon HD chipsets can play web video from say, UA-cam or anime sites and DVD quality media very well but do not expect Blu-Ray/UHD playback to work without skipping frames. And of course gaming is mostly out of the question. These are accelerated video decoders, not gaming chipsets."
Got a reply for you from Deep Blue: Many modern clients based on SATA can be used, but it depends on the model specifically. Firstly, the casting is different. HP is usually quite slim so fitting a drive inside might take a different approach. I don't know if any specific HP models, such as the T-Series have ports on the motherboard to steal power from the drive as I did with the adapter cable I made, or could have done by running off of the +5V on the internal USB connector. Your best bet would be to find out if the client in question uses a non-replaceable onboard chip, IDEOM, or a small SATA SSD, like the Z-Class does. If it uses a replaceable SATA, you can always just use a SATA power+data extender combo cable from eBay to plug your drive directly into the onboard ports and get both power and data that way but if it's a replaceable chip soldered on, or an IDE DOM, you might not have any options. That Dell later added a SATA port to the IDE-based R-Class is very unusual. Wish I could be more specific, but I don't own any HP clients. Just have Dell WYSE variants & IGEL.
Deep Blue says, "No, just SATA & the usual PC ports like USB and (depending on revision) serial/printer/etc. It was designed for the SATA flash disk you see in the video. Beyond that, you need to get creative. If doing a mod seems like too much, maybe a live boot from a USB 3.0 pen drive would do but options are limited as they weren't meant to be upgraded usually. Just traded up as part of the original services plan."

With the second and third approach you can use both the laptop hard drive and the included flash module. The first one is pointless, in my opinion.

The cable from a Dell FX160 might work for both the power and data for the SATA drive.
I just ordered one. I'll let you know if it works. If it doesn't I'll just cut the JST off and splice on the correct size.
Update: The Dell FX160 cable I ordered arrived, but unfortunately the power connector half of the cable is too large for the MJST 1.25 on the motherboard. If someone wants to order one of these, it might make for better cable management, but you will still have to splice on an MJST connector like if you were using a Molex converter like in this video.

Why not use an SSD instead of a spinning drive?
You only get so many writes with a SSD. They are more prone to failure.
