To paraphrase (hopefully), it's not a problem when a fighting game is designed around a simpler execution floor; but to take a series built with a higher skill floor and then lower it has a much bigger impact than simply making the game "beginner friendly"

I originally scoffed at this game during its original release because it looked cheaply put together but I decided to give it a shot when it was added to Xbox Game Pass and I was surprised by how fun it was to lab some crazy combos despite its ease of accessibility. It actually became a game my friends wanted to play with me which is a surprise when you realize they usually hate playing fighting games because they can't execute complex inputs like I can and as such never really want to play games they know they'll constantly lose in. Power Rangers BftG definitely has a lot to offer and surprisingly does a better job of bridging the gap between pro players and new players alike a lot more than Dragonball FighterZ does. Fun game overall.

Just to comment on motion inputs because I think you glossed over part of how they're used in games that have them. They're also a time commitment, like in game, as in it takes you a split second to do the motion before the move can come out. In combos this doesn't really matter and all comes down to timing, but in other situations it actually effects the utility of a move and that's built into the balance. Most grapplers have a full circle motion attached to their best grabs partially for traditions sake, but also because it means you need a wider window of vulnerability or a harder read to hit that grab.

Well. That's not the Black Ranger. Just a bunch of generic Storm Troopers tapping into the Black Ranger's power. And all of them have the same standard gear.
Black Soldiers have machine guns. Pink Soldiers are snipers. Red Soldiers have swords and are use a elite guards, Green Sentries ride tanks, etc. So maybe not exactly what you want but close.
But to be fair Power Rangers has always given each Ranger their own unique arsenal. But America didn't adapt the one Sentai series that actually drop the uniformity of the designs.

I normally don't like Team Fighters in the Marvel vein, but it works for Power Rangers. The entire conceit of Power Rangers and Super Sentai is that the heroes are working as a team, not individuals, so using a team based fighting system for a Power Rangers game makes perfect sense. There are even a bunch of seasons that specifically have (or at least start out) as Three Man Teams like Ninja Storm and Dino Thunder. So I have a lot of fun making teams from the characters available based on what seems like it would reasonably work as a Ranger Team from the show, like Kat Ranger Shadow Ranger and Quantum Ranger since they're all military official sixth ranger types. Or villain Team Ups like Zed, Dai Shi, and Drakkon. It really cracks the nugget for a fighting game style that never clicked for me before, to this day I still bemoan that Dragon Ball FighterZ is a 3 on 3 only fighting game considering how little that fits for the DBZ franchise which is famous for the one v one slug outs (or at least adding a Skull Girls style system where you can have one super buff fighter against a team of three, that'd fit for Dragon Ball), but for Power Rangers team building is the focal point of many of the seasons.

One thing to help with buffering inputs. Say in sf5 to do a hadoken it’s QCF+P (236P) and for a super it’s QCFQCF+P (236x2 + p) while confirming your fireball, say with StHP (5HP) during the animation of the HP you start “buffering” your fireball by inputting it before the animation finishes, then during the fireball to do the super since you already input your first 236P you input 236P again and it counts as the motion for super and you get an easy confirm into super. It works with DPs in the same theory. 216P236P will do DP into super.

I'm always so divided on ease of execution, if only because funnily enough, the simpler the input, the easier it is for me to mess them up. FighterZ is about as simple as I prefer it, as at that point it's just trying to remember spacing and height control during a combo. But at the same time, I want more people to play fighting games and I KNOW inputs are usually a big barrier-to-entry -- so I like these changes.
I've been playing fighters for 30+ years so it's just kinda hard for me to personally reprogram myself. Not impossible, just uncomfortable.

There is a place for simple execution fighting games, but harder execution also has its place and perks. I'm a Guilty Gear player and it's well known that Johnny is a complete beast and the best character in the game. But he is also one of the highest execution characters in the game meaning you need to commit to practicing and learning his execution to unlock his true potential. The beauty of fighting games is there is a style and type of game for everyone out there imo.

    • @christopherschlegel6412
      @christopherschlegel6412 4 роки тому +5

What almost always gets overlooked by both sides of the inputs debate is that inputs build in a balance. Guile can't throw a sonic boom or flash kick while walking forwards, and zangief can't use his super without jumping, using a move, or being in hit/blockstun/knocked down for examples.
Personally granblue fantasy versus did it in my favorite way to date. The special moves have a cool down on them, you can use traditional inputs or easy inputs at any time but the easy inputs make the cool down longer. I often use a mix of easy inputs and traditional ones during my block strings, mixups, and combos even though it can be a crutch; and using an easy input DP can really save your skin for how much bigger your reaction window becomes.

Aspects such as the vs. match intros, the round start announcements, character kill and the final KO screen could really go for flashier or more impactful messages. Dead or Alive 6 (Active community, game isn't currently directly supported by devs but the fighting is solid and one of the most accessible 3d Fighters. Robust modes as well. Female fighters might be slighly fanservicey but not nearly as bad as before. Also the game is kinda DLC crazy so beware that.)

Soul Calibur 6 (Very active community. Lots of game modes. Fanservicey female characters but you can customize outfits to mitigate to some extent. Also robust character creator for artists.)

Fanservice is a key mechanic to DoA. Getting aroused has academic research showing that it slows down reaction time for the average person and must not be understated in a fighting game, where a single frame of delay can be the difference between pulling of a successful combo and failing hard and getting wrecked! Well, maybe not a single frame all too often, but it can affect competitive play if you can pick an outfit that specifically will distract your opponent. For me, I would always pick skirt outfits and throw off my friends by pointing out whenever their panties were showing, giving me an advantage and turning losing streaks into massive comebacks (as joking as this all is that legit happened against one of my friends every time. He'd wreck me til I started doing that then I'd win 10 matches in a row after I started and he'd be pissed lol)

I believe single player content is important, and that story mode or something compelling to work towards is what makes or break the game for alot of people who aren't entirely into the genre. For example Soul Calibre 2, it had that huge adventure mode, that was enough to want to keep playing and unlock stuff with, that I learned many of the characters moves despite it being one of those 'motion combos' type of fighters. For the lack of that mode, I couldn't be engaged enough in future Soul Calibre games to want to keep playing and learning mechanics and memorizing combos.

gets online right for the most part. Never thought I’d be interested in a Power Rangers fighter, yet here we are. Subscribed!

Welcome, friend. I'm glad Battle for the Grid did that for you, I really enjoy playing it every once in a while. The Rollback + Crossplay alone is a dream come true.
For me, it was BlazBlue CF and DB FighterZ that taught me the most, even through terrible online. I love them for being so accessible while being very deep. And visually stunning.

Great video as always. As someone who is very into fighting games, I appreciated hearing the perspective who is just getting into them. I do kind of want point out that inputs for specials exist for multiple reasons besides legacy or because its just the way its always been. Special moves started as a way to give characters more tools and varied move sets within the limitations of the number of buttons. This may be less of an issue today, but I feel like it still holds true, especially if you want to give characters a large amount of normals.
2nd, the special inputs also serve as balancing tools. The quarter circle input and input for shoryuken require people to stop moving and blocking as they start with down and forward respectively. You have to be vulnerable for a bit to use these stronger moves. This is especially true for super moves that require more complex inputs, since a lot of them either have big hitboxes, large damage, or invincibility on start-up.
Furthermore, I think when talking about execution, its important to realize that it serves as a choice for players at all levels of play. I personally don't have great reactions and execution, so I am not often able to convert stray hits into full combos, and I usually have to wait for large openings that I know I can punish with full combo, which my opponents can also realize. You even see this happen at the highest levels where you have players like Sako, whose playstyle in Street Fighter 4 was built of good reactions and good execution, while players like Snake Eyez was built around mind games and good neutral.
I am overall for fighting games to become more accessible, so the community gets larger and more people can compete. Games like Rising Thunder and Power Rangers excite me for their potential to finally bridge the gap better than ever before. I just think its important that people understand why special inputs and difficult execution exist and continue to exist. They have a real purpose for design and balancing decisions, and they are one part of what can make a fighting game so exciting.

You'll never expect where and when you'll "get it". While I was sold on the aesthetics on Killer Instinct for the SNES, I never got past the button mashing stage until SSB64 streamlined the execution and still gives such a high difficulty ceiling in terms of learning spacing, timing, baiting, move priority, match-ups, stage quirks, and combos while having fun. The weird part is that I never went as deep into mechanics, watching random matches for hours, frame data, trying different tools for different jobs, and even practicing claw grip moves as when I got into Dark Souls 1 PvP.

23:28 I'm new to the netcode topic myself but I think rollback actually causes teleporting. Teleporting is a byproduct of how rollback tries to predict what's happening in the game in moments when both players desync. This prediction allows the game to seem like it's running with no hiccups when it predicts correctly but when it doesn't, for example when a player changes direction at the moment of desync, you get the teleporting when the connection syncs back up. The benefits of rollback are more in how it disguises desyncs as opposed to pausing the game in delay-based which then allows for inputs to get dropped, making your character feel unresponsive.

Only other experience with power rangers was Dino Thunder because I bought one of the VHS tapes for it with my allowance. We didn't get cable in my house until I was 12 so if it wasn't on basic channels the only way I consumed it was through VHS tapes. Still how I got into DBZ etc, saw the vhs and the art looked cool so I blew my month of allowance from doing chores around the house. The fact I own like half the buu saga is a miracle.

I havent played Battle for the Grid [Though I do plan on it, once I can], but I have played Blade strangers, which seems to have a very similar input system. Though its not the most mind blowing thing on the market, it has made me call the genere's dedication to motion inputs into question.
Though motion inputs can allow for a greater number of moves, the simplified inputs had me labbing so much more quickly and effectively. I have been labbing half of Blade Strangers roster and having a blast, where as with something like blazblue and Guilty Gear, I cant even fathom touching more than like, four characters max.
Im not saying motions should go, they have their place. But for even someone like me, who has been comfortable with motions for about a decade now, I immediately felt the benefits of simplified inputs.

  • @braha710
    @braha710 4 роки тому +2

Honestly i agree i like the system they went with here and made the special moves easier for one it can grab people who might not have been so keen on learning a fighting game before because of having to memories those moves but now they are way easier to use and players can instead focus on basics which in this game are way easier than others. While also leaving plenty of room for pros and such to come and do some wild and crazy stuff. I have a few friends who say their sole purpose for not playing fighting games is because they dont want to memorize quarter circle moves and such. One thing im confused about is how people say this games looks bad where does it look that bad like its not amazing looking but not that bad either. Now for attacks honestly i like the ones in the game they look cool the big thing here they don't really do much with camera work most supers are a zoom in on a character then they go into the move thats it. Compare that to well most other fighting games where the entire super is treated as like the best thing ever with camera work that makes it seem way more flashy than it is.Now dont get me wrong some supers in this could use some upgrades but some just need some more camera work added like Dai shi's level 1 would look amazing with some camera movement with it and stuff.

Another beauty of motion inputs is that it also gives nuances to the gameplay.
A DP for instance is fwd, dwn, dwn fwd, or 623 in numpad notation, which means if you're walking backwards you can't DP as easily as walking forward, and DPs are mainly "Get off me" moves. This means if you see your opponent walking back you are safer to advance.
Hadoukens are inherently easy to confirm into with low hitting moves like Ryu's crouching medium kick (cr.mk) because it starts from down or 2. Playstyles are also dependent on these like how most zoners use charge inputs because you're usually moving backwards anyways to keep space or staying crouching guard so when you see someone jump as Guile you just push up and hit em with a Flash Kick.

The fact that you're never really "out of the game" makes it so good for a beginner but there's also a ton of depth. The fact that you know you could stop it when getting combo'd alleviates frustration so much. Instead of "oh this guy is just using his Bread And Butter over and over again" it's "Oh this guy keeps doing this over and over, I can stop this if he lands it". Such an underrated game.

Its cool seeing the perspective of someone who found "THEIR game that got them into fighters." I remember getting into Fighters back in BBCS purely because Taokaka was so much fun for me, and I've been playing fighters ever since. With Alot of Fighting game companies trying all these crazy routes to lower the barrier of entry to the point of annoying long time fans who are gonna destroy new people online regardless, its cool seeing someone play a game with alot of depth to it, and hearing them talk about why they stuck with this game over any other fighter that might've just passed them by. Its an interesting perspective even if you do have played fighters in the past, just never got into them for very long.
Two things I wanna say, one, I also like Single-button-special-move fighters like this and Blade Strangers. Theres just something satisfying about not needing to worry bout the input, or how to do this motion fast enough to get it to register in order to do crazy fun comboes, but also knowing it wasnt the game being too precise or not precise enough on its inputs on why the wrong move came out or not at all even if im in training mode with the inputs on clearly showing I did a QcF there. Might sound scrubby but I do enjoy it when its just direction + button to do a special move to make it easier, even if I can do more complicated combo routes in other games with proper inputs. Granblue Versus doesnt really count because regular inputs are still better in most cases so I feel I have to do those inputs, but Power rangers, its just "5HH > 5S-M > 4H > jump > j.M > j.S" etc. to do something that looks realyl cool.
And Two, I'm not a power rangers fan by any means. I've tried to watch a few power rangers and super sentai shows but theres something about them thats hard for me to watch. Its hard to explain why, because I can watch shows like Kamen Rider just fine, or other kids shows, but something about Power Rangers does not click with me at all. This is why its extremely impressive that I can pick out five or so characters out of the 19 characters in the roster right now that I would be 100% down for playing at any time. I think thats partly cause the characters they pick have alot of visual variety and their gameplay vary so much that it never comes off as redundant to me. This is in comparison to a game like Marvel infinite which has Double the roster size but so many characters just rely on pulling stuff out of thin-air without actually using super powers that a large amount of the roster is just boring to me, and I dont have two characters im invested enough in to make a team of two people.

Its self explanatory to how to do it in most cases (outside of moves like pretzels) but when you compare it to other action focused games, typically it's one or two button presses, which is a lot less than having to do motion inputs on the direction pad, you can see why some struggle at first getting into it. Plus if you been playing since SF2, you have to remember how much time youve had to perfect those skills over the years, so of course they feel easy for you.

Like switching between 4 different weapons and styles and keeping track of them all at once in dmc, or keeping track of all the various movement options in smash seemed just as difficult if not moreso imo.
You don't need to know all thst complicated stuff for smash and dmc, but honestly you don't need to know how to do complicated inputs for fighting games either. Usually the most simple strategy/thing to execute is the most efficient anyways.
I always thought that moat people would just go in with a simple gameplan and learn more complex stuff as they go. Theres not many games you cant do that in anymore afaik.
