One always comes away a little smarter listening to Pako talk defense matters. As someone with a part 107 drone license, I'm eager to see how the FAA accommodates these defense drones, and whether or not such technology will creep into civilian or law enforcement capacities, which in some degree is happening.

In the near to medium term is seems the most useful applications are to carry extra fuel and weapons, so instead of building a crewed airplane with 2-3 times as much max gross as an F-35 you send 2-3 CCAs with it carrying extra fuel for each other or the crewed platform or carrying additional weapons. When dropping stand in air to ground weapons you can just send them the last leg of the mission into the high threat area and the fighter pilot is just there to both manage the flight as a whole and fight anything that comes up to contest the mission and requires more complex tactics than just flying straight and level.

The comment on the debrief is imho very valid, very easy to adapt a pilot to a new threat but CCAs programmer will need to be educated, programme written, validated, tested and updates completed

Our curent era reminds me of the heady days prior to WW2 where the new technolgy of military aviation was changing quickly and there were many competing theories about how to employ it and what it's future roll would be. Just as it did back then, I suspect the harsh realities of combat will determine which theory ultimately proves successful. Hopefully the Billy Mitchell's of our day are getting it right.

There are two groups of people when it comes to discussions about AI.
The first group are people who understand what the 'Fi' in Sci-Fi stands for.
The other group are fighter pilots.

Yeah, I think that was intended to be a compliment..
      I read it as saying:
"Most folks only understand the "Fiction" part..where as fighter pilots are in a unique & 'highly classified' place, in knowing its not just Sci-Fi at all anymore..but soon to be science FACT!"
Or, I could be reading that wrong..I'm gonna give it the benefit of the doubt for now.

can you just imagine two pilots and fighters, and each have two drones following them. or you put 20 drones on B 52 who will insert drone to combat zone. Or a submarine could deliver a drone via a missile to the wherever the batt zone is in the world, and now the plane can have a virtual wingman/kamikaze.

A question. At the 40:30 min mark, Pako re-qualifies his initial CCA acronym for the fighters, to add the support types i.e. Autonomous Collaborate Platforms (ACP), so that got me thinking, when taking on fuel in the air with a KC-135 or whatnot, it flies on a "straight" trajectory (it's actually an orbit, but you all know what I mean) and the fighter jpck has to "dock" with the probe using his stick skills, which in turbulent air or at night can be somewhat difficult etc. Could an ACP tanker reverse the docking role and let the fighter fly "straight" and level in the orbit and the ACP tanker "docks" with the fighters probe using its 100hz micro adjustments ? Thus easing the stick skills needed to do it the traditional way currently ?

Can't it be just ad-financed, like every other software? Because it looks like the future of aviation is becoming a Software business. I can see a 4-year cycle for software versions, but new capabilities on drones might take a lot longer to physically implement.

@TheMergeMedia Thansk, man. Sorry to be a d*ck about it. I just heard Jello struggling. I'm a career PAO in military and PR guy in the civilian world. Folks always beat the drum about opsec and confidentiality, but it often skews way too conservative. When we're trying to inspire and advocate, we need to tell a great story. In this case, details on what the future can look like can be delivered in big buckets of possibilities and not shot glasses of Intel that can be used by competition, state or industry. Keep on keeping on. But I'm sure you got your call sign drinking buckets on that crawl and not shot glasses! 😅

Great Show and very interesting of our future fighters.....one concern I have is what "Pako" said about the Air Force being the largest smallest force with less and less flying assets. That is concerning and the Navy controlling when they will deploy the Navy jamming assets for AF missions. thats got to change and rebuild our great military forces.
