  • There may be no better fighter in history or currently flying than the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. Designed as an air superiority fighter to replace the F-15 Eagle, the Raptor combines advanced sensors, stealth, and exquisite flight controls and thrust vectoring into a lethal platform.
    On this episode, retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Terry “Stretch” Scott joins us to describe the Raptor’s amazing features, weapons, performance, and more. He also helps answer a listener question on what it’s like to fly a fighter during extended ocean crossings, often lasting 12 hours or more!
    Returning to the show as a guest co-host is episode 59 star Dave “Chip” Berke, retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel and former F-22 exchange pilot. During the listener question segment, he discusses historical paradigms of aircraft design, what is included when discussing the bomb weight classes, how to handle not getting your first choice in flight school, and the difference between blue and green / brown water flight operations.
    At the end of the episode we say goodbye and thank you to Sunshine, who hangs up his co-host hat as his day job demands more of his time and attention. Fair winds, shipmate!

    Okay, the F-22 has always been impressive, but I wasn't aware of the fact that every single control surface can move independently to give you ridiculous and unconventional maneuvering. The F-22s and F-35s are mildly terrifying.

      F22 at an air show was mind boggling. It can seemingly rotate around itself in midair and seems to hang or float at impossibly slow speeds while maneuvering.

    32:06 I know it is Raptor time but oh please Jello DO just bring Stretch back for the F-15C episode. I felt like my prayer has finally been listened for an episode about the Eagle!

    Extra thanks to Chip for giving the Raptor's situational awareness some love. After all, the Raptor's not exactly employing 6 AMRAAMs with Pilot Eyeball Mk1. Stretch talked about the radar a little but it was about things like the SAR upgrade. It would've also been nice if someone mentioned that even a Raptor still has chaff/flare dispensers, but it's nice that Chip did touch on survivability as being more than having superior stealth and kinematics.

    These podcasts are amazing, the amount of information you can get from the people that actually flew these planes is huge. I wish you guys could get a Brazilian Air Force pilot to talk about the A-1, A-29 or maybe even our own modified F-5M. Anyways keep up the great work!

      I'm actually curious about your carrier A-4s. I heard they got upgraded to carry out BVR combat as well as precision munition delivery just before the sole Brazilian carrier was retired. Is your navy keeping those jets or are they turned over to the air force?

    I love the show and have not run into an episode I did not like. All the guests and commentary have been fantastic. I really enjoyed the F-22 episode. I'm hoping for an F-15A-D episode and an F-15E episode.

    Sorry, listened to this way late but.... take this for whatever it's worth. Stretch is right on.... but to add to Nico's question on being prepared for not getting a fighter out of training..... Had a lot to think about there and brought up, to some degree, an emotional response. I didn't get a fighter, and I had a frigg'n AWESOME career and even after the service, the experience I gained kept providing for me and my family. To go to UPT or Naval flight school with the precept of "fighter or die"..... well, I think you're there for the wrong reasons. I know it might not be trendy in this day and age to say this but, if you're going to become a military pilot of any sort, ask yourself why do we have these aircraft in the first place? I'll go ahead and answer that for you- For our nation's defense. You're there for our NATION, not yourself! Sure, give it your all, and strive for what you want. But remember you're there first and foremost for your country! Also, to have the privilege to go to a military flight school is an amazing honor, give it your all and be PROUD of whatever you fly. Don't let anyone tell you any less! To put in what it takes to fly any of these tactical aircraft frankly requires giving all of yourself to your nation when it calls, not just in a fighter.

    I love your show, A short story. At 23 I wanted to fly a Cessna 152. I could do 3 take offs and landings for $17 dollars. Then We would drink endless coffee`s an watch the planes taking off or landing. We sat in the front lounge area looking out over the lush green air field in Marshfield Massachusetts town airport, which was a very small airfield on the ocean in the North East. I loved it. I all most gave up body building I was so enamored with flying. Well I got devorced and that put an end to the flying. Great show, and thank you

    F-22A Block 30s were the most capable CAS platform in Syria until the USMC F-35Bs arrived in 2018.
    F-22s were putting SDBs through windows of specific ISIS cell leaders, opening the door for F-15Es, and doing counter-air with multiple VLO intercepts against Syrian and Iranian Air Force fighters.

    Love this bird. StarScream is F22 in TF. Raptor pilots were suffering with serious coughing problems around 2011

    This Podcast is phenomenal I'm always looking forward to episodes and this one certainly was fantastic! Chip is such a cool guy to listen too, it'd be great if he was on the show even more, and Stretch was just as great to listen too. The F-22 is just a beast of a plane, I just recently seen it fly at one of our local airshows flown by Major Paul "Loco" Lopez and it was amazing 👍

    Thanks. Very interesting podcast. Was very surprised that canopy would not allow helmet mounted system, cockpit always looked roomy to me from terra firma. Too bad production was stopped, but at $70k an hour, i get it. Hopefully NGAD will be worthy a successor and affordable to use. Even if simulators are good and complementary tools, nothing can replace actual flying. In the end your plane is only as good as your pilots, so flight hours matter.

    I was stationed in Vegas at nellis and worked on F-22 as a crew chief my baby was 99-011 then moved on to the F-35

    Longest Duration in a Fighter Jet?
    My former supervisor used to be a crew chief on F-111’s at RAF Lakenheath, England. His jet participated in an round trip Operation called El Dorado Canyon, which was over Libya sometime in 1986? He said, he and others had to physically pull the pilots and WSOs out of the cockpit because they were so exhausted.
    Does anyone know how long that roundtrip lasted for those aircrews? I am curious - it was probably a record.

    I've heard that combat-coded Raptors got the same/similar helmet cueing as the A-10C, which is a monacle that fits under the visors and allows the NODs to be attached still, unlike JHMCS.

F-16's are still great for what it can do but maybe they realized having a twin engine F-22 didn't make too much sense so they went on and designed the F-35 for both the Air Force and Navy.

    I'm not a pilot or expert or anything but with the growing number of 5th gen jets like J-20 and Su-57, do you think the airforce and navy have enough 5th Gen air superiority / offensive capibility ?
    And do you think an F-35 with AIM-120 is equal to an F-22 with AIM-120 in a bvr engagement with a 4++ adversary like SU-35 or Typhoons and Rafales? Thanks for the Podcast.

    F22s are in the first Iron Man, he actually gets hit by the jet and it loses a wing. F35B was in the Avengers and gets ripped appart by Hulk, I would say you were 2 for 2 more or less :D Great show btw :)

    The most interesting tid bit is the commonality between newer Blocks, seeing as the same is the case with Vipers and their CCIP upgrade.

      The Combat-coded Block 30s are significantly different aircraft under the hood, with expanded A2G/SAR capes, better central computer banks, newer RAM, JDAM and SDB capable, better data link interoperability, etc.

    Can you tell us your current thoughts about F-22 vs F-23? Back in the day fighter pilots always favored speed n range. F-23 supposedly much more faster and stealthier, but F-22 is a little more agile. With how tech gets outdated so quickly; supposedly no one would have stealth tech for awhile (which was underestimating competitors) and risk of losing such valuable asset vs cheap drone or sam. Really interested in hearing pilots opinion. Thank you

    Col. Scott was given his choice of planes? Meaning he was an exceptionally skilled and talented pilot and soldier. How does the USAF determine if a pilot is able to choose their plane?

      The hosts will know this better, but from what I heard from other interviews, after jet training pilots are trained depending on their grades. The higher up one is, the more choice in aircraft they have.

      I talked with a Raptor driver who had intercepted a Syrian AF MiG-21. They never saw him. He set up on him and called him over guard, told him to change his heading and go away.
      The presence of F-22s & F-35s changes things to where air hostilities are reduced because we hold all the cards, whereas the threats have no indicators that we're within weapon parameters of them.

    I remember hearing a couple high supersonic booms when I was at home in wa when those 2 fighters came zooming by to protect the presidents airspace years ago...heard they were f15 fully loaded at 1.7m at like 40000 asl, and I chuckled when I imagined how scared that made our enemies ...the speed despite load was great haha, then I had that reminder that f22 could be at that speed without afterburner ;)

    It's now 7/6/22 almost three (3) years after this original video was produced. It seems as if the movie "TopGun" (not Top Gun) has listened to your advice. Is it a coincidence that what occurred in that movie is consistent with the capabilities of the FA-18 vs. the 5th Gen aircraft, fictiousially proposed as enemy aircraft, which ust happed to be an outcome as you guys described in this podcast from back in the day?
    Wow, what a fortunate prediction of the capabilities of 4th and 5th generation aircraft compared to our usual "Ford model" FA-18s as is the common comparison. This podcast accurately predicted some of the ergonomics of the movie "Top Gun Maverick" as part of this pilot-to-pilot explanation made on this channel. These conversations were made a few years before the movie "TopGun Maverick" finally came out. You guys must have had some sort of ESP to predict the experiences of this F22 pilot with respect to the scenarios which actually occurred by the real Blue Angel pilots who performed the actual flying sequences in this superior movie. I don't believe in ESP, but if there is such a thing, your pilots had it.

      I think they specifically glossed over that aspect for operational reasons. But I agree with you it would be neat to see a cockpit view of a F-22 eating gen 4 jets for lunch.

      It's better in every way against all comers in one way or another:
      The Bug obviously has the energy maintenance deficiency--it's a fairly heavy airplane for what it is and you get a lot of induced drag from the wing design at speed--but the Raptor is better against it in the vertical and in the horizontal. I'd wager that they're both close once you get them slow thanks to the Bug's elastic AOA limiter and design-focus on a slow radius fight, but the Raptor probably has somewhat of an edge, though. That big flat fuselage will work as one big lifting body as slow speeds and will probably give you a decent amount of control in pitch, not mentioning the thrust vectoring.
      The Eagle isn't as good in the horizontal and isn't quite as good as the F-22 in the vertical or at maintaining energy since it's a little heavier and the F-110s don't put out as much power. It's probably about the closest in speed and climb rate, but it'll have a much lower pitch rate.
      The Viper isn't as good in the vertical, but probably is about as close as any of the three will get in maintaining energy and in the horizontal, same for acceleration thanks to how slick the airplane is, but it doesn't have the low-speed handling qualities at all thanks to the 29 degree hard AOA limit the Viper has for aircraft stability reasons. Not mentioning that at high-AOA the thing bleeds speed like mad to induced drag and just doesn't have the raw thrust out of it's single F-110 to keep it up.
      G-wise, the Raptor, the Viper, and the Eagle are all 9G airframes--the Eagle may be artificially limited for airframe life, I'm not sure though--while the Hornet is a 7.5G jet in most applications unless the pilot overrides the limiter to get it to it's hard 9G limit. That 7.5G limit on the Hornet really hurts your turn rate when fast because you do pile on the pretty quickly when in a fast fight, you end up pulling and pulling and the jet won't give you anything beyond it unless you tell it to tattletale on you to the maintenance guys because you went past the 7.5G soft limit. High-off-boresight missiles like the AIM-9X really are what evens the score between all of the 4th gen jets you mentioned.

      @@Combatant5 F-15 doesn't have GE F110s, unless we're talking South Korean F-15K.
      F-22A thrust/weight, TV, climb rate, and super maneuverability exceed performance envelopes of all the teen fighters considerably, not that any of these metrics really matter.

      As for the rest of what you have to say, I'd be willing to guess the performance is a lot closer than what you're thinking it is. The Raptor is a very good airplane, but it's not a slow-speed fighter, and the whole supermaneuverability thing is an airshow trick, and the same is true to a point with thrust vectoring. It helps, but it doesn't change the aerodynamics of the airplane. That big, flat fuselage and large double-delta wing make a whole lot of drag for the lots of lift it produces at slow speeds and high AOA because past a certain point it just becomes one big air dam. Further, if you again go back and detail read my post, I said the F-15 was *closest* in performance in the vertical and in speed. The F-22 definitely surpasses the Eagle, but it's going to be what gets you closest.
      Ultimately, though, it's entirely possible to beat the F-22 in the visual arena if you play to your strengths, and there are more than a few videos here on UA-cam showing it. You just have to get there--problem number 1 since you can't find the thing--and get lucky.

      @@Combatant5 The only videos of F-22s defensive are from defensive perch set-ups, which are common for BFM. In every other set up, they normally dominate, unless going up against FWS instructors. There are senior FWS instructors who don't make a lot of mistakes that are just going to win no matter what you bring to the fight.
      Where a senior FWS instructor or high time pilot is at a complete disadvantage is in a real fight against the Raptor, starting from BVR.
      Re: F-15 propulsion, they are either Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220s or -229s, not the GE F110 (with the rare exception I mentioned).

    Robert Downey Junior messed up the F-22 in the first Iron Man movie. The joke was that his company manufactured the F-22 so when his military buddy told him he was going to have to reimburse him for the jet, he just says he'll give em five more or something.
    The lore in my mind is that Stark Industries is actually just an analog for the entire US defense industry, and in the Iron Man universe, it's basically all conglomerated under one company so they don't have to worry about portraying real corporations in ways they wouldn't like.
    I'm curious how Lockheed felt about the F-22 being portrayed as lesser than Iron Man - you'd think they might not be happy with the jet getting destroyed even though it was just CGI. The Russians are much more sensitive about that, it seems - any film or art that portrays Russian military vehicles generally gets bent into propaganda to some degree. It seems like the Russian MoD or Russian defense companies are a little squeamish about having their products portrayed as anything but Godly.

      To the Raptor's credit, they managed to give Iron Man/Tony a hard time and the F-22 being downed was due to an accident and not any ill-intent on Iron Man's part.
      ...How armor that thin managed to shrug off 20mm rounds is... well... movie magic, I guess.

    From my understanding, the vision was to replace the F-15 with F-22 and everything else with F-35. If that happened, the US would have a completely all stealth fighter force by now. Boy I wish we had that.

    I don’t understand. We read that this aircraft isn’t able to keep a readiness rating much above 60%. Is it not possible to make a stealth fighter reliable without an extraordinary effort by maintenance?

I understand maintenance, worked in V-2 on Ike and ended up managing QA for Cats.. but it drives me nuts to read we are unable to achieve a readiness rating of 80%. If I ran my company at anything less than 99% I’d go broke.
      Maybe the News articles are just headlining for readers. But I’m not sure we could win any kind of limited conflict with a peer level adversary much less a war where we try to defend Taiwan, Japan, Australia, etc… or Croatia, Poland etc with 1/2 of our force ready to fight.

    Haha, just watched "Aloha" (available on DisneyPlus) and the F-22 appeared just about 45 seconds, showing Emma Stone getting into the cockpit and putting her helmet on. That´s it. So all the flying was cut out. What a pitty.

      Indeed, but this is also the first variant/block of the F-22. And Lockheed-Martin still retains all the tooling and whatnot to start-up production again. It would take some time (it's not like they could restart making them in days/weeks/months, but they could start remaking them in a year or two if they really had to.) but at least the option is there. No one that defends the F-35 wants to hear it, but I don't care because you need to face reality: the F-22 was sacrificed in part to help pay for the F-35. Just another reason I will always, always hate the hell out of the F-35 and hope I live long enough to see it retired from service.

      ...Can one have enough F-22s? But, really, no, they don't. Not anywhere near enough. There's only 187 operation aircraft. Some will be lost to accidents and incidents. They are all around the same age, too, and thus will start getting to the limit of their airframe lifetimes in terms of hours and stress over time at around the same time unless the Air Force purposely flies some less and are kept in reserve... which means less F-22s to use in operations and training. Spare parts are also going to be an issue, too.
      My guess is that a decade or two from now one of two things are going to happen: 1.) The Raptor becomes the unicorn and the fighter version of the B-2, nearly sacred and precious and treated like a national treasure. 2.) Reinforced by new F-22B/C/D/whatever/Block[insertnumberhere] that are upgraded with new avionics and radars and other neat things and newly manufactured.
      ...Let's hope for the latter.

      @@matchesburn depends how you see it. A single F-22A on average would easily beat 8 F-15s, it is a force multiplier. In pure number however there's quite frankly not enough F-22A to fully replace F-15 in the roster.
      There's many factor why F-22A stopped production and one of them is F-35 entering production, but it's not really just a pure sacrifice. After the cold war, the F-22A doesn't have actual enemy to face. There's nobody that can contest the F-15's superiority let alone the F-22A. The govt decided that more F-22A is not needed because of it's highly capable, but somewhat limited compared to F-35 series.
      What does F-35 have over F-22A? Many things. It's stealthier, much more user friendly cockpit with one large touchscreen interface, more advanced avionics like newer, better radar, EOTS for more flexible ground strike using laser targeting, new data link system that's easier to connect with other allied planes(F-22A data link is only connected mostly to F-22A and AWACS, other planes can't directly connect to F-22A), DAS sensors all over it's body paired with helmet display giving 360 IR view and tracking. Many of these systems can't be implemented in F-22A because of technical difficulties or even design limitations. F-35(A and C variant specifically) also carries larger 2000lbs JDAMs internally which can't fit in F-22A's weapons bay.
      F-35 can fill in the numbers of F-22A that the USAF didn't buy to some degree, but I must mention there's no actual substitute for a dedicated air superiority fighter. Sadly, USAF research on restarting Raptor's production basically states that it's practically impossible because some technically reasons and mostly budget reasons, and it's preferable to make a successor to F-22A instead

      @@stealthtallyfox7210 you're getting a bunch wrong here. The F-22 has the smaller RCS (roughly equal to a golf ball while the F-35 is roughly equal to a baseball), better payload capacity and endurance, and the same ability as any other current-generation aircraft to share information (Link 16/MIDS/other such systems). The F-35 is also less-capable from a performance perspective within the visual arena thanks to it's single engine with less thrust overall than the two F-119s of the Raptor. You also mentioned the F-35's ability to carry Mk.84 class weapons. While it's true the JSF can carry 2000 lbs-class weapons, it's significantly restricted in what air-to-air weapons it can carry simply due to it's two smaller weapons bays versus the Raptor's single large centerline bay and two smaller intake bays. A Raptor would generally carry (as mentioned in the interview) a half-load of missiles at 4 AAMs and two racks of SDBs or two 1000 lbs GBU-32s. They're significantly closer in capability than you're making out.
      Also, the reason production ceased was down to politics. In 2009, the Obama Administration and the US Congress torpedoed funding for the remaining jets because they were, "not relevant to post-Cold War (read:low-intensity and COIN) conflicts. Right now, the F-22 does have enemies it's worth having to counter in the Su-57 'Felon', the J-20 'Black Eagle', along with advanced Su-27 variants like like the J-11 or Su-35. Further, the F-35 makes a lousy interceptor due to it's reduced top speed which is why the USAF is currently exploring the F-15X as a supplement to the F-22 fleet, and a direct replacement to the F-15C.

      @Joe150 ish I'm reasonably confident that the F-35C\B will prove to be a very capable, highly survivable platform.. Just like the Hornet series. Sure.. We'd all like to see the U.S Navy acquire an aircraft dedicated to "air superiority". But that would obviously lead to compromises as well. Not to mention the gaggle of online"experts", disgruntled politicians and media that would gladly hate on such a project for being unnecessary and or too expensive. You know.. The same treatment the F-35 receives.
