    something I really struggled w making zines was the idea of freedom? Like I’ve been in the community for a while and Ikw zines can be about anything but it wasn’t until my first zine fest that I realized zines really can be about ANYTHINGGG. You don’t need to have a special idea or a special execution. I gatekept myself from making zines 😭

    I did a punk zine in the 90's and my one regret is not taking more photos, it's different now where you can take as many pictures as you want and put up a ton online but the one thing I saved from my zinemaking days was the pictures, these are just local bands playing and people at a house show, I had zero photography training and cheap cameras and had a friend develop them and they turned out really cool. I got rid of a bunch of the zines and originals themselves in a moving purge but I found an old floppy disk cleaning out my mom's house, more than anything else it's a pretty good time capsule of my mood when I was a teenager, which was really weird to see at 40.
    My tip is use those fine point sharpies, they're cheap and they look really cool when photocopied.

    • @brattyxbre
      @brattyxbre  6 місяців тому +5

      wow, we've really grown a lot since the floppy disk (i have a bunch but have NO idea how to get whats on them onto my mac?? maybe there is a way to convert them...shame...i wonder what's on em haha) thank you for this beautiful reminder to take more photos, scrapbook, and capture memories in a more analog way. thank you so much for watching!!
      *off to figure out how to see what's on my old floppy disks*

    In Australia, especially in Melbourne, I've found fabrics, old cards, even brand new or unopened craft supplies in op shops (thrift stores) such as Savers, St Vincent de Pauls and Sacred Heart, to name a few!
    You never know what vintage magazine or old stationary you might find that could be assist in zine-making AND it's helping the environment (I guess?) as it's not going straight into landfill.

    One of my biggest problems with Zines is that I don’t know where to find Zines that are closer to my interests. I don’t have a lot of time and I want to enjoy a hobby. I don’t want to read a lot of heavy activism zines or heavy topics when I am trying to relax. I just want to find more zines that fit aound the window of my interests. I don’t mind reading things that aren’t perfectly my interests but it can’t have heavy topics or activism that stresses me out when I am trying to relax.

    • @brattyxbre
      @brattyxbre  8 місяців тому +4

      Totally understandable. There are TONS of zines that have nothing to do with political themes or activism - Tumblr, Pinterest, Etsy, and TikTok are great places to find a good mix of zines that are more light. In person craft fairs or artist valleys are another nice way of discovering zines that may match your interests and aren’t too serious. They’re out there you just have to keep up the search 👍🏽
      And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, it’s encouraged to make the type of zine you’d wanna read and contribute to the zine community that way x

    I have just compiled my first two chapbooks, each containing a selection of my poems, and that put me into the mood to create some zines - as personal art projects, combining poetry and art .
    I think your advice makes a lot of sense. I have long ago stopped “creating to make money” and found that my art and my writing immediately started to improve, simply because I was so much more relaxed, enjoying the process and not so focussed on outcome.

    Every time i watch one of your videos i feel so inspired to create, which is something i really appreciate as someone who views being creative as integral to my well being as a complete organism but still sometimes neglects my first loves (drawing and writing) in favor of other medias. Zines are a perfect combination for drawing and writing and its part of why i love them so much. excuse my scattered ramblings, the point is that you facilitate an environment that is so openly in love with the act of creation that inspiration just flows freely here. and i love that

    Gate keeping happens and it can be very pretentious. Though I think your point of protecting something special was spot on. Sometimes when it gets big. The toxic pool gets larger too. Though I think you can preserve something special by being a beacon of knowledge and your love for that hobby. I think you’re doing that well. :)

    Thanks to you and your channel, I made my first zine last year. Definitely, it’s just for me. I can’t really copy it because it is on a16 x 24 inch sheet of paper folded into pages, and it has metallic gold and metallic silver on a wine colored background with black print, and if I brought it over to FedEx Office it would cost a million dollars to copy, if it copied well at all. But that’s okay. I love my zine, which is all about my journey from being a pastor into being an agnostic. It was SO HEALING to create. I have more ideas that will maybe be for more of an audience. The first zine, though? That’s my personal main squeeze of a zine. For nobody but me.

    As someone who’s almost entirely carrying a very VERY tiny niche in her fandom, the prospect of gate keeping the thing I love is BAFFLING to me. My group is already nearly nonexistent as it is, why would I want to KEEP it that way when more people interested in it means more for EVERYONE to enjoy??? I know “it’s special to me” is usually the excuse, but then my argument is “so is MY special interest, but that’s just all the more reason for me to want more people to discover the joy of it. More people liking it doesn’t make this thing any less special.”
    I’m glad you kept going with making zines despite the stumbling blocks you encountered along the way. Especially since now you’re here and sharing your creativity for others to enjoy and take inspiration from.

    omg the gatekeeping part, i'm so sorry you dealt with that. Im just a stranger on the internet, but i don't think asking for help as a newbie is annoying - ppl are kind of jerks sometimes.
    i've been really struggling with knowing how to take up space/posting my content online for literal yearssss, i'm promising myself is the year i fully engage with my hesitance and figure out something that feels good to me, and i think zines is a great way to take up space in an analog/digital hybrid that would make me feel much more at ease

    The wait was worthy! I'm glad I saved this video for when I'm not busy 🎉🎉🎉!
    P.S.: People in the art field (which includes zines) tend to be really snobby. I wouldn't take it personally 😖. In my country's scene there is a lot of pettiness, a lot of competition between illustrators. Which is ironic because we have A LOT LESS consideration than in any other countries from Europe, and we'd benefit a lot from mutual aid

    27:24 I read somewhere that trends usually come from what people feel like they miss from society (or something like that)
    I honestly would love for zines to start trending and becoming more popular, because i can't find any zine community where I live, and It'd be awesome to see all that people can create if the zine community were to grow bigger!
    I've noticed that a lot of vintage and homemade things are trending more, like crochet(I think?), diy(I feel like it's constantly trending, but I've seen more natural diy videos (like not troom troom style channels)) or vintage clothes, and if it keeps going like this, It's very possible that zines will be trending one day! At least I hope :')
    (sorry for all the parenthesis)
    Anyways, amazing video as usual!! UA-cam wasn't notifying me your new videos for some reason, so my brain kinda forgot your channel's existence >:( But now I'm catching up on the videos I missed!! PSA: First time viewer. You got my attention at TS: 1:24 ‘Gatekeeping’.
    I draw / Ink / write my own comics.
    I know what goes into making standard American Comic Books. Yet, a while back when I tried to inquire of “how to make a Zine”, I noticed the lack of answers, and how those individuals closed ranks.
    As if I had asked someone - at a Zine Convention no less - for the U.S. Nuclear Codes.
    I was like…seriously??
    It reminded me that, no matter the type of human, so many engage in this pursuit of ‘tribalism’ to the detriment, and minimizing of others.
    Even with something as open to all - as the Arts.
    Specifically, ZINE making which has no set parameters and is about as universal in comic book making as it gets.
    Glad I found this channel.
    - Thank you.
    (Ps) I stuck around, watched this video all the way through. All 28:15 Sec’s, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
    Yet-most importantly, I learned from you.

    I can understand the gatekeeping to a certain extent. If someone's asking stuff that they could find out themselves with minimal research then why should I have to take time to explain it to them. But if it's asking for recommendations or stuff like that, then sure, ask away.

    I have a question id love from advice on. Making a zine that is using song lyrics or an excerpt from a published book... are these allowed to be sold if we make it clear that it is not ours? I know people make zines using song lyrics all the time I just am not sure what to do about selling them. Thank you in advance!

    • @brattyxbre
      @brattyxbre  8 місяців тому +2

      As far as I know that’s totally fine as long as you are not claiming the lyric as your own (ie: saying you came up with that lyric or something). Zines are typically really punk and not professionally published so it’s usually not a concern if you use material like that in your work. This is just coming from my own opinion - not an expert in any way btw! 😊

    Watching this video reminded me that I bought a digital book that I never got around to reading. It's called *1000 True Fans* by Jon Longhurst. The gist of the book is in the description, that if you can get 1000 people who want to pay you $100/year that is a six-figure income (which is about five figures more than I have now it feels like). So, thanks for bringing that back to the front of my mind.

    Ooof no gatekeeping bc some people don’t need to know shit. information can fall into the wrong hands and ruin things for other people. For example, if I have a business, I’m not gonna tell you how I run it- cuz then you can copy me and add to the competition lolol. It’s a dog-eat-dog world. Gatekeeping is a must. People need to find shit out on their own sometimes.
