I actually skipped the online premiere so I could see it for the first time in the theater, and I was glad I did. Sudbury Devil is a film packed with little details which are easy to miss without multiple viewings. The trailer that Andrew posted did gave a well funded film vibe to it and your comparison to Snowpiercer is actually pretty apt in how the general vibe of it feels for me. It feels... so gritty, so distant... the settings feels foreign and cold.

@@James2005. The ones that went a bit heavy on the "White Guilt." Don't get me wrong, I'm no racist, but as far as history is concerned there's plenty of dirty hands of all races. There's still plenty of dirty hands to go around today.
I'm not going to make a laundry list of the annoying vids but I would remind Andy of something he said in one of them:
"There's a lot to be ashamed of in American history, but there's a LOT more to be proud of." I haven't seen much in the way of pride in Andy's vids, or maybe to be fair I've just missed it.
Andy's still a young man full of collegiate "Save the world!" activism, or so it seems. I've got almost 60-plus years of study concerning history and let's say I've developed a bit of tolerance for those in the past. Things are rarely "black and white," we can't understand the events (ANY events) of the past the way those who lived through them did (That's if THEY even did!) and we have to avoid falling into the trap of "presentism," that is judging those of the past by present-day standards or saying things like "Well if I was around back then I wouldn't have thought like that!"
      Yes, you would have.
I did remember one video. It's the one where Klaus the Nazi (Great character by the way!) shows up at the Confederate tombs with a dumb sap sidekick wearing a MAGA hat. I'm not a big Trump fan (Although I liked his policies and the results they got) but that particular bit struck me as a needless slap in the face to a lot of very good people. The working class folk, which the other party's abandoned. Even James Carville and Paul Begala said it:
"They've left the factory floor for the faculty lounge!"
      Anyway, that's enough.

I don't know how you can tell the story of American history from the 17th century onward without implicating white people in horrible acts that frankly didn't happen in the reverse case. No one is forcing you to interpret guilt, but if you felt like that was the message, I honestly think that reflects more on you than it does him.

“…whte people committed horrible acts that frankly didn’t happen in reverse…” 😂😂😂
Wow. I don’t believe I’ve ever heard a more clueless, ignorant, europhobic statement in all my life. Atun-Shei, is that you?? You can’t be serious. Tell me you don’t know anything about the New England Anglo-Indian Wars without telling me you don’t know anything them. To be sure, your entire comment was politicised leftist poppycock, but that statement alone was enough to discredit your expertise on this very specialised subject, which absolutely, positively, 110% DID include horrific acts carried out against the English population.
Do you even live in New England? Into our early history much? Hell, I could name several despicable acts of outright murder, which involved mostly children (but then, when do leftists ever condemn brutality against innocent children?) committed by many of the Algonquian-speaking tribes in this region. Unprovoked, unwarranted, unjustified, period, end of report, next case. And that’s just the ones off the top of my head that immediately come to mind.
I find it equally amusing how all you callow leftists who can’t help yourselves when it comes to altering our history and slandering our traditional folk heroes will show your anti-whte bias without even taking any care to at least try to conceal it. Speaks volumes. You’ll whine and cry about “mUh rAciZm” when it comes to Hannah Dustin avenging her newborn infant after the Abenaki smashed its head against a pine tree, after they bound her hands together, forcing her to watch, and then attempting to march her and her neighbours into the wilderness where they were to be sold into slavery in New France. But then, when it comes to “indigenous” aggression, everything they do is somehow justified because they were supposedly “fiGhTiNg tO pRoTeCt tHeiR LaNd”.
If you can’t take our history seriously, if you lack the maturity and focus it takes to analyse our history from impartial ground and tell it as it really happened, then simply stay away from it. Go play video games or zone out on pornography, or whatever other low culture abominations your ilk love to immerse yourselves in. Seriously, I honestly do not understand why postmodernist leftist types even like history. I just don’t understand it.
I have noticed - and this is especially true in people like Atun-Shei’s case - that whenever leftists dive into history, there always seems to be this corny, vapid touch of ironic “theatre geek” aesthetic to it. I swear, this is the case in so many examples I’ve seen. They just can’t take anything seriously. Everything has to be dressed over with childish, ironic humour or politicised rhetoric mucked up with depthless sketch comedy. Must be the lack of an adult attention span. And even when you guys do try to do anything intelligent, you people are almost NEVER impartial and you never waste an opportunity at smearing and demonising European peoples over every little act of hostility, no matter how justified, whilst excusing every act of barbarity committed against them (especially when it comes to innocent children, but again, that much is to be expected). Good review, good info. I’m intrigued, although I am deeply opposed to the fundamental sensibilities of Satanism, and find it terribly ironic how popular it is in New England, I may try to give the movie a whirl. I hate to have to say this, but I’m not a Christian either. I just think that such persuasions are obnoxious and self-unaware at best and blindly destructive at worst.
Anyway. Imma be laughing at that conclusion for awhile.

You know, that Brown Bess could have been "17th Century-ized" pretty simply. Remove the nose cap and trim that end ot the stock, paint the stock a dull or brick red, very common back then, and paint the white metal parts black, also very common in the 17th Century, then substitute a wood ramrod for the metal one, at least for the close-ups. OK, it's a flinlock, not a matchlock, but the flintlock had been developed by the middle of the 17th Century and they certainly would have made their way to the New World colonies. Top technology firearms of the time were critical for suvival and a matchlock was hardly top tech, still fine (somewhat) for Old World armies but not so good for a colonist trying to stay alive.
Ignore my Monday-morning quarterbacking, I appreciate a filmaker who at least TRYS to get it right!

"One scene definitely made me raise an eyebrow-" there's for sure a scene that people seemed to respond to as such, and honestly I find it baffling that it's been crowned "THAT Scene" when to me it's the least horrifying of the "weird stuff in the woods" moments in this film... I mean nobody dies! Violence is so normalized in our culture that no one bats an eye at a stabbing, but God forbid someone do something sexual outside of the missionary position... like, please tell me someone else caught the irony of reacting like that to a film about the Puritans.
Having just seen the film a day ago, I get what you're saying about the pro-Christian vs. anti-Christian takeaway and I guess my response to that is... maybe part of this hinges on one's experience with Christianity. For those of us who had to deal with hardcore Evangelicals, especially in our formative years, there are a lot of unfortunate parallels with the Puritans and we are perhaps inclined to identify with and root for the witches in this film. For people who have had some slightly saner experiences with other denominations I could see identifying with Fletcher. But no one's a hero in this film, so despite a seemingly-cosmic struggle between the two sides in the end I think we're mostly just left to contemplate how small and weak individual humans are as they desperately scrabble for a sense of control in an unforgiving world. Which feels very Andy to me.

hey Brandon love the review. I have a question about revolvers in 19th century warfare if you'll indulge me. why did no army in the mid eighteenth century consider replacing muskets/rifles with revolvers for line infantry combat? wouldn't 6 shots before having to reload be superior to 1? was it because of logistical or accuracy concerns? I know that this isn't relevant to the review but I've always had this question. thanks for you're time and keep up the good content.

    • @kyleheins
      @kyleheins 9 місяців тому

Two major reasons are range limitations and utility in melee. A musket and bayonet were far more useful to an army in close quarters than pistols and swords. Additionally, a pistol will barely reach 100 yards at all, while a musket or rifle will easily reach 150 with most of its energy remaining.
There is alot more, perhaps Brandon could do a small video on the details of why revolvers never replaced muskets in a dismounted context (and perhaps discuss the few minor exceptions to that).

In regards to period based language, that depends a lot on (a) the period (I do want to understand what is being said - nothing gets me quicker out of my focus if I have to spend more time on trying to understand what is being said) and (b) the type of movie/series. For example, in A Knight's Tale they use very modern music, and behaviour of for example the fans, but I liked it. It fitted the movie and that movie certainly didn't want to he historical accurate.

With OP it's a bit of a risk (a few people did struggle with it) but broadly, it's more intelligible than people think. I find it's harder to listen to Shakespeare in OP because you're also dealing with a vocabulary difference and a more artistic syntax, but if it's just regular people talking to each other, as in this movie, it's like listening to someone with a pronounced Irish or Scottish accent. I think the OP is crucial to making this film what it is.

@@fnansjy456 That is precisely my contention. I think there is a difference between appreciating the skill it takes to make art (which I think Brandon has done), and supporting the immorality of it (which I think Brandon has not done), however.
Now, certainly, any set of morals requires an ultimate moral law, and mine is the Bible. I choose that moral law because it happens to be the one which has caused, by far, the greatest amount of good to be done. For example, it is what gave America its prosperity. It is what gave a source for arguments in favor of human rights. It is what ended the slave trade. It is what makes everyday life so much simpler, and yet so much deeper, than anything else. It is what prevents suicide, brings together families, causes the forgiveness of great grievances. All of these are historically proven, as well as still the case today.
Now, the Bible also states that if you are not for it, you are against it. There is no neutral ground.
So yes, I am saying that if a movie displays content that is obviously against the Bible, or breaks the moral law set forth by the same, it is immoral. And yes, I am saying that anyone who does not give pause to the consideration of indulging in such immorality, or willfully advocates for it, is acting immorally.

How would anyone come off with any impression of Atun-Shei other than “this man is messed up in the head” after watching the first episode of “Checkmate, Lincolnites?” He - quite literally - murders Johnny Reb in the first episode…
The dude has always been messed up in the head. The Sudbury Devil is nothing more than a manifestation of just how messed up he actually is.
