The Captain being incredibly proud of his crew is so Goddamn wholesome because you know from that he loves and trusts them all so much and is so proud of what his Navy can do. He's walking away beaming with pride to be in that Navy
Watch the documentary. I’m a U.S Navy (aviation) and Army (MP) veteran, and I don’t really miss them due to the fact that 80% of the time is spent doing paperwork, formation, and waiting around; however, I do miss the traveling and getting to meet fellow NATO sailors/airmen/soldiers.
P.S: I still get nightmares that I got re-enlisted for three more years and I’m late to formation. 😂
So many different things pissed me off when I was serving in the British Army. However, after I left and returned home from overseas, I missed absolutely EVERYTHING about it. Even the things that pissed me off so much.
I still regard that time as the best of my life. The friends I made, the camaraderie, lol, everybody being pissed off and miserable together. The girls…… sorry, not being misogynistic, but there were so many girls that just lived squaddies.
I even miss drill. Pointless exercises, guard duty 2 hours on and 4 hours off.
I will cherish those times for the rest of my life. The good and the bad.

I think I watch so much military news and shows because it does take me back to when I was in the US army. I think this is why so many veterans do watch these things. Its a way to reconnect to that time from the safety of your couch. Like you I miss my time in the military but definitely do not want to go back to it.

When the US Navy does something they almost always asks the Royal Navy to send a Type 45 Destroyer to join them because of their long range radars...
What rubbish. The US Navy does not need the Royal Navy. The US Navy is a real Navy compared to the microscopic Royal Navy there is no comparison as the US Navy has the equipment and man power to deal with anything. You need to wake up the days of Load Nelson finished a long time ago.
When the type 45 was taking part in war games the US couldnt believe just how good it was, telling the Royal Navy at one point to not take part because it was destroying everyone and everything.
This kind of stuff happened a lot in the 1980’s. Cold War stuff. The Russians hated having U S Navy in the Baltic, The Black Sea, or anywhere near Soviet territory.

These mighty huge battleships of the Biggest Navy in the World were attacked and sunk by Japanese aircraft. This is rubbish talk trying to make out that this ship would be able to deal with so many deadly aircraft. One ship is a sitting target without air cover which is usually done by having an aircraft carrier with you. Our Royal Navy is hopelessly equipped because of this Conservative cut backs have made our armed forces very valuable. Unlike the US Navy which is a real Navy compared to the little Royal Navy. Don't be surprised if a number of our ships are attacked and sent to the bottom in the near future.

On HMS Yarmouth in the Falklands War, as we were firefighting HMS Sheffield who'd just been hit by an Exocet on 4th May '82, we were attacked with torpedoes by an unidentified submarine. The MOD have never acknowledged that this occurred. Our flight commander flew a sortie in his Wasp helo and saw it just beneath the surface. Some seamen on the upper deck saw the torpedo tracks. Our sonar guys even recorded the sound of the sub's torpedo doors opening and closing and sent the cassette to Northwood, but no official receipt ever arrived. We dropped ten mortars on it, but it got away. The Arg subs remaining at the time were either scuttled or elsewhere. I suspect the sub could have been Russian, hence the MOD silence all these years. What a helluva diplomatic incident this would have created if the Whitehall suits had had the courage to speak up.
My dad was on Submarines in the 1970s and very early 80s and he told me, that at some point a new Russian Warship had just been commissioned, and as nobody had ever seen it outside of Russia, when the Americans heard it was in the med somewhere, they got on board the Sub, The HMS Conqueror, and they trailed this warship in the Med off the coast of Turkey and proceeded to try and sneak up on it to get photographs of it...
The Russians caught on to what was happening and dropped depth charges on them...
He was telling me that it could have been seen as an act of war, but because of what they were doing,had anything gone catastrophically wrong, the MOD would have put it simply down to a tragic accident and covered it up rather than have to admit what they were really doing

The northern and eastern Mediterranean has basically been a NATO lake since the 1970s, 80s if you want to make sure that's when Spain was in, with all these maritime patrol aircraft, optical satellites, and intelligence assets on coasts and islands and you're going to tell me they they "wanted to get photographs" uh what? So, new Soviet warship launched (assuming from the Black Sea), assumably armed with advanced (for the time) ASW technology, and you're telling me they were going to have the HMS Conquerer ASCEND TO PERISCOPE DEPTH?! yeah, no.

HMS Duncan is a serious air defence destroyer. Every single one of those jets would have been downed, no problem, if they were attacking. Same with their missiles. Unbelievably capable. Sampson radar can track targets in space. And hundreds of targets at once.
Maybe 1 or 2 jets the boat might have a chance, but definitely not 17 😂 delusionally patriotic 😂
@jamstew547 you have any idea how ancient enemy's radars are? World overestimated orks and we are paying for it currently. Had the west given Ukraine necessary weapons when the war began, this conflict would have been long below the ground.

@@jamstew547it's a ship not a boat. I doubt Russia even has 17 fighters that are air worthy. Just look at the one Russian aircraft carrier. It has to go to sea with a tugboat every time as it's always breaking down. Unlike an American aircraft carrier that could sail for years without going into port.
17 aircraft in multiple positions and distances firing on a large slow target isn't that difficult. Even one strike could disable the ship or knock the radar out. Either way god forbid it would be interesting to know the outcome.

I'm a former Royal Navy Leading Radio Operator who fought in the Falklands War like your dad, and my ship HMS Yarmouth stood by to take survivors off Glamorgan after they were hit by the land-launched Exocet. We'd previously rescued survivors from Sheffield and Ardent. The book is by me, Paul Cardin. It's controversial, no holds barred, and it's called "Return to Bomb Alley 1982 - The Falklands Deception". Russia took Crimea in February, March 2014. Cheers

Former USN gunnersmate here. To put it simply, the concept of directly attacking a modern guided missile warship is suicidal.
Especially Federation forces who are operating very old weapons platforms that in many cases have seen little to no block, flight, variant updates let alone modernization.
Sea domination dictates the course of geopolitics. Attacking ships, either civilian trade, liners, or military platforms is never a small incident.
Refer to Falklands War, Operation Praying Mantis, and the current Red Sea combat operations involving three multinational task forces from 29 nations.
This behavior by both Russian and Chinese forces is just old hat saber rattling and very reminiscent of the First Cold War.
My family has four generations of Navy going back to the first interim war years just prior to WWII. There were many stories from our Cold War vets of this kind of behavior.
My late Father was a lifer (20 years) in the submarine force both Pacific and Atlantic commands. The Russians like saber rattling but are we really surprised?

@@nonameok1586 don’t forget the Duncan has phalax 20mm anti air / anti missile 3600 rounds a minute, with their own built in radar to lock in all incoming threats, if you ever seen these bad boys in action, you’d soon respect the firepower of them, also, ships are equipped with electronic warfare to confuse / downright bugger up incoming targets, these bad boys are not to be sniffed at old bean, just my tupence worth 😁

Still 2:1 odds at least, and at that it's highly unlikely all those jets even have functioning countermeasures.
I think Crimea being a disputed region..Russians must have had deployed coastal based anti ship missiles with far longer range than just 30 miles. Those jets aren't the least of their worries. Atleast 2-3 destroyers would even the odds.
@@Skywalker622she'd have done a heck of a lot of damage before being taken out that's for sure. Many of the old jets the Russians rely on for maritime strike can't be produced anymore, would have been too costly for the Russians even if they did damage or sink her.
@rowanmaguire7890 Oh there is no doubt she will be sunk if she is out there alone without back ups. Russian anti ship missiles certainly packs a lot of punch a hit or 2 will disable/distrupt most of the destroyer's systems then she will be a sitting duck thats a 1 Billion £ Destroyer ship with full complements of her sailors and 2 helicopters aboard....besides Russia's entire Black Sea fleet is based out of Sevastopol, Crimea. But yes I agree due to sanctions imposed after annexation of Crimea Russian economy and its manufacturing capacity has been hit even more so after the invasion of Ukraine.

Yeah I watched all 3 seasons after watching your last video on this as I was fascinated - definitely a good watch! not all combat/tension focused, it focuses a lot on individual crew members and the life of those crew while onboard. Saying that, I binged all 3 seasons in 2 days sooooooooo yeah, its pretty good! haha

48 missiles compared to how many missiles a single fighter jet may carry multiply that by 17 moving targets around a central location that cannot menuvor and escape being targeted by 17 aircraft including bombers that were built with the purpose of sinking ships.
I wouldn't be so arrogant no matter how much fire power you posses at your disposal.
Two words... Sea Viper.. look it up it was developed for this reason
+ 2x CIWS and that's not mentioning the jamming systems. Duncan would have taken damage yes... And might have sank in the long term returning to port but there would have been 17 downed foreign assets.

It's one thing to be confident and I think this is fundamentally the problem with western approach to Russia, the complete dismissal of them as outdated and redundant.
That response about them having 48missiles and they have 17 aircrafts without any thought to their distance to Crimea some 30miles apparently knowing that Russia had that place on lock and Russian missile and ballistic weapons stationed there. You think that ship wouldve made it out of there? It would've been sunk as it's close to a Russian naval base Sevastopol. Hubris like this is what is causing many of the problems today underestimating Russia.

Arrogance plays no part in understanding your capability and your limitations. I don't think for one second they would have blindly engaged in such combat that would have left 1bn pounds worth of equipment in "no mans land".
@@robertshaw3619 My friend, the arrogance were the words of the naval officers remember the initial claim was 30km off Crimea in 2018. Russia took hold of that place via a referendum like what 2015 or thereabouts. The construction of the kerch bridge was still ongoing if I'm not mistaken.
So the arrogant words about 17jets and 48 missiles as if they can stop of the armaments carried by those aircrafts especially if they had torpedoes and that close to Russian coastal defences.

Most of what was said is not arrogance, I'd say it's mostly posturing more than anything. As I said before they will be well aware of Russia's armaments, and also well aware of their own. This isn't a case of " my guns bigger than yours " they will obviously still be well aware of the "what if " scenario. Having said that, I think it is you who underestimates the capability of the destroyer. As with any equipment... It depends not only on the capability of the equipment but the competence of the crew manning it. At 30km the computer calculated armaments of the type 45 destroyer leave 0 room for failure that is attributed to human error, which is more than can be said for the flight crew of the 17 singular jets surveying the sky above... Especially considering they most likely aren't even 4th generation jets. So they won't have integrated systems, meaning everything is human operated. Which leaves room for human error. The officers onboard the HMS Duncan will be well aware of this from their training. Again not Hubris or arrogance... Not even misplaced confidence. Just an understanding of the minute details. One thing the rest of the world misunderstands about his majesty's supposed "dwindling navy".
We may no longer have the world's most imposing navy but for what we lack in size we make up for in quality. Let me assure you of that. That comes in many forms. "My friend"
@@robertshaw3619 The topic has strayed, it may be posturing and nervous posturing at that given the situation but I was mainly pointing out a trend and mentality of dismissal of anything Russian and about their capabilities as you can see many of the other responses.
I'm just saying this is fundamentally wrong and its rife all throughout not only the political and military class. This thinking is asking to get slapped in the face as is happening. The HMS Duncan is no doubt a capable vessel but temper the bravado a bit in them areas. Clearly you cant send 3 or 4 Duncans up there now because everyone can see the capabilities. In 2018 they didnt know and that's the point.
Human error is always a factor I these situations but I'm sure these men are well trained it seemed to me foolhardy and cocksure to be going that close and at that time

I think being cocky has no place in warfare that's how people get killed. If attacked all at once you'd definitely get a hit no matter how good you are or how many guns are on board that ship.

As proud as I am of the Royal Navy there is some serious arrogance here. If all 17 jets opened fire at the same time, each firing a salvo of missiles, (which is what they would do) HMS Duncan wouldn't stand a chance. With only 1 phalanx per side of the ship, there simply wouldn't be enough time, or enough phalanx rounds to down that many incoming threats. As for the 48 interceptor missiles, they can't all be launched simultaneously, they need time to launch. Again, there wouldn't be enough time to defend the ship with the jets that close, nor would 48 missiles be enough against 17 jets each carrying 4 or more missiles. The Royal Navy would only fire in self defence, by which time it's too late. Unfortunately this is how the Russians operate... They invade your airspace or buzz your targets so often without attacking, that if there is ever a real conflict they can get close enough, nobody expects an attack, and then they do, and nobody has time to respond.
People are over confident. They think Russian weapons are made from old tin cans. Russia has some astonishing weapons like the satan 2 which at 200 tons can travel 35000km at hypersonic speed - ie London to Berlin in around a few minutes. Some of the Russian aircraft can carry the Kinzal missiles, another hypersonic weapon.

17 of them against our 48 missiles. Hmmm and what happens when each jet, in a surprise attack, deploys an airborn torpedo to the water? How will your 48 asters and 2 phalanx stop 17 torpedoes? All of which could be deployed before Duncan fires off a single missile. Those officers were way over confident.

Pretty sure none of those Russian jets were carrying torpedoes! Even if they were, as soon as they locked on to Duncan they would have been blown out of the sky. This is probably the most advanced anti aircraft ship sailing the seas and oceans today. This ships main role is to lock on to and destroy multiple threats from the air. Once her silos open it is game over for those 17 fighter jets. Attacking an anti aircraft ship, with aircraft shows just how dumb those Russian are!
😅 The RN has been spiked a number of times. But no ship can defend against a large drop of missiles if dropped close and the Russians have been coming close for decades.

Russia invaded Crimea in 2014 if that's any help. Many civilians wouldn't understand just how complicated the situation is.
They’re in Russian waters Crimea. So intercepted by Russian air force. Being ex RAF they’d be conducting bomb runs. They’d also be targeted by Russian anti ship missiles from the Crimea. It wouldn’t stand a chance.

The ships crew were fully aware the Russian planes were not intending to attack. This isn't the first time such encounters have been made.
And if the planes decided to fire there weapons that ship would have been disabled.

How many missiles did each of those 17 aircraft carry?
Were any hypersonic?
Do fighter aircraft usually approach the enemy ship and "buzz around" a few times, giving Duncan enough time to activate their defences before targeting or releasing their missiles?
If firing at Duncan was the real aim, would these fighter jets not have released their missiles as soon as they knew they were picked up on Duncan's radar or even before that?
And if 2 aircraft released at least 2 hypersonic missiles plus the usual load from the remaining 15 aircraft, doubt 48 missiles or CIWS would have been that handy.
What are the chances the commander's words were primarily as stress relief and reassurance to his crew?
Did anyone think that the commander was going to say his mind in full truth?

As an Ex submariner I can say that the Russians are so busy flexing muscles to understand by just how much they are out gunned in EVERY way.

They were in the Black Sea mate.... near to the coast of Russian occupied Crimea, which is a part of Ukraine. They took over Crimea in 2014.
I'm quite satisfied with my own reactions to watching stuff. What a weird world we live in. Everyone must be creatively brain dead if they constantly need to watch other people's reactions, but hey! Sounds about the time of a (multi country) blacksea naval exercise that was going on, don't think it was just the Duncan that got a fly by.
Basically, HMS Duncan was sailing around Crimea to undermine Russia's claim to it. TBH it's all diplomatic theatre. With the benefit of hindsight, we know that the Russian Airforce (including Naval Air Forces) are a complete disaster featuring poor leadership, badly trained pilots, lack of advanced fighter planes and poor maintenance. The fact they couldn't secure overall air superiority in Ukraine says so much. Even though the British Military has many issues, we would tear them to shreds on land, sea and air.
