Yes it was. The Canadians had fewer resources available than other nations, so they got real creative in how they prosecuted their war efforts. They were celebrated as being famous or infamous depending on which side you were on. LOL The Fat Electrician goes into more detail about this in another one of his videos.

It was mainly WW1, we had to pull back a bit in WW2 cause we went a little too far in WW1
The oil rigs weren't producing oil by then. They were used as outposts for the Revolutionary Guard and a forward base of ops for the Iranian Navy for doing things like scattering mines in international waters.This was known by everyone at the time. The existence of anti-air guns mounted on the structure should be dead giveaway to anyone interested.
Yeah the first time I heard this story I was a bit confused as to why they’d have anti-air guns on an oil rig to begin with, so I must’ve missed when The Fat Electrician literally stated early on the video that the oil rigs are no longer drawing any oil but are instead being used as military outposts.
They were mostly being used as operating bases that they operated their speedboats out of as scouting vessels for their blockade.

He did a lot of things that in the long term caused some incredibly intractable problems, like turbocharging inequality, and breathing new life into racism. But he really did have a great sense of humor and I honestly believe that in his heart he was a patriot.

Incorrect. The Shah was already ruling over Iran when Mossadegh was overthrown. He ruled from 1941 until 1979 when he was overthrown. Mossadegh was elected in 1952, 11 years after the Shah’s reign was established. If you’re gonna be mad, at least be mad about the right things.

No internet was so different to todays "lemme google that". If I wanted to know something I had to go to the library or look into our family's way out of date encyclopedias.

I was there.
The tanker escort mission was called Operation Earnest Will. When we would enter or leave the gulf through the Straits of Hormuz, Iran would light us up with their Silkworm missile radars. And steaming around in mined waters is rather nerve-racking.
I was on the USS Merrill (DD-976), SAG B, during this engagement. We wound up doing all the shooting on the Sassan oil platform because Lynde B. McCormick's gun had dropped sync and was "walking" and they couldn't fix it in time.
After the engagement we had a joke: How does the Ayatollah inspect his fleet... Glass Bottomed boat.
The Soviet Udaloy destroyer was gathering intel.
A few details wrong, but it doesn't detract from the story and NO ONE gets ALL the details right.. I love Nic's presentation. I've seen most of his videos and they are awesome.
I didn’t know that only your ship fired on the platform! I was part of the Marine detachment that set the explosive charges. I picked up a few small “artifacts” while moving about the platform. One of them was a piece of shrapnel that was resting in the bottom of a trench that was carved out of the helipad by one of your shots. The 5” groove started shallow and grew deeper as it grazed over the surface, finally penetrating completely. Thanks to you I know which ship fired the chunk of metal I’ve been holding for 36 years!
@@johnsoule2417 I was standing EW Console Operator (AN/SLQ-32) and one of our other guys was my Radio Operator.
The only time I got nervous during the operation was when we had an inbound F-4 and he got a little too close for comfort. Guns had dropped sync and couldn't pick him up, and he was in Sea Sparrow's blind spot (cut-outs), so they couldn't fire on him, and I didn't have his radar, yet. I believe he got within 20 NM, suddenly Sea Sparrow picked him up, Guns picked him up, and I picked up his radar. He bugged out because he knew he was going down.
I think the other thing that bothered me about Earnest Will was steaming around in mined waters. Very nerve-wracking...

@@toddhutchins2492 I really appreciate you sharing this extra insider’s perspective, Todd. As a self-taught military historian this is like finding a gold nugget! You are correct when saying no single presentation seems to get every detail right, but all the highlights are here. Of course you know we didn’t just “send a couple of Hueys” full of Marines to set charges. The Trenton did have a couple of UH-1Ns but our main ride was the CH-46. We were covered by AH-1T Cobras which added 20mm and TOW missile fire to the 5” gun damage. The Sassan GOSP was truly massive with multiple platforms connected by catwalks. There was visible damage almost everywhere, some of it obviously fresh, but I suspect some might have already been there. Perhaps from an Iraqi attack? At any rate, it was a battle station. Ammunition stores were cooking off from burning fires sending metal in random directions. I can see why the Sirri platform wasn’t raided! After each platform was “cleared” (using concussion grenades) the Marines of MAGTF 2-88 (B Co. 1/2) gathered intel items for analysis. We even took a ZU-23-2 and hoisted it under a CH-46 for transport back to the Trenton. The gun was almost completely intact except for a fresh shrapnel gouge in one of the barrels, courtesy the Merrill. The same choppers then turned around and began the process of transporting around 3000 pounds of explosives over to us. Due to some previous experience with explosives, I and another Corporal were ordered to stay back and assist setting up the charges. I had a rifleman and a grenadier from my fireteam as well. A SNCO from EOD was in charge of the setup plan. We used lots of C4 blocks, but also improvised 40 pound cratering charges to destroy other 23mm ZU emplacements and stacks of Iranian ammo. We even used Bangalore torpedos along the catwalks. All of this work took several hours for our small group! With everything set to go off together from a det cord, the Gunny lit the timed fuse and we got on the last CH-46 out. I saw Gunny looking at his watch on the flight back to the Trenton, sweating and praying I’m sure, that everything would work. I never saw the explosion, as it went up when we were still airborne.

Trivia: Earnest Will was the first Operation that had Navy SEALs, Special Boat Units, and 160th Special Operations Aviation working together. It foreshadowed the modern future of SOCOM working with Big Navy and Marines.

68W (normally referred to as 68 whiskey) is the MOS code (military occupational specialty; aka job) for a combat medic in the US Army. So when he says he's a former 68W, just take that as, he's a former combat medic in the US Army. Hope that helps!

The fact of the matter is that at the end of this conflict, the reality of Iran's military capacity was affected for decades, while for America it amounted to a footnote in the history books and an incident that could be swept under the rug. The idea that Iran's leadership thought that putting mines in a massively trafficked international trade lane had even the slightest chance of doing anything other than provoking a fight they could not win was insane.
I have to say, when he first mentioned the dive team discovering the mines were Iranian, I expected the divers to moe them into Iranian waters. I realize that's a dangerous proposition, but it would have been fun watching Iran discover their mines had made their way home.
That's more than a dangerous proposition, that's an effectively impossible proposition.
A mine isn't well-designed if it's something that's easy to disarm or move.
Even if there wasn't a risk to the divers, and they could spend hours working on the mines, without using a nearby support ship since those mines are designed to detect ships and detonate, most naval mines are like 400-500 pounds, and the ones in use by Iran in this incident were a particular type where the mine is also tied to an anchor that weighed who knows how much. The mass of the mine means that even if it were neutrally buoyant and wouldn't need constant effort to keep from sinking, it would still be difficult to move. The mooring means though that it actually isn't neutrally buoyant, the explosive payload at the top is, but as a whole the mine sinks. The tether to the mine is typically a heavy chain, and a rope alone is hard enough to cut underwater, let alone a chain.

as a former navy hull tech in the early 90s who served on at-sea fire party and did a lot of dc work, lemme tell you, the crew of the samuel b roberts were absolute legends to us.
How can you work fast enough to keep a ship that damaged from sinking, I keep running the image in my head and keep wondering how is that possible

It’s a medic not a combat medic, there is no distinction between medics attached to combat units or hospitals it’s luck of the draw we all go through the same training. Not saying that’s a good thing, buts it’s the way it is now do to politics and has been for a few decades.

My father in law had a friend in the air force. He was army. This friend was tasked with taking out an enemy tank, but his plane only had air-to-air ordinance left. So he flies up up over the tank, dive bombs it, and fires a fucking AIR-TO-AIR MISSLE AT IT. my FIL said that the best technical term he heard to describe the aftermath was “smithereens”.

It's always been the problem with Iran: Disconnect. Their army does what it wants, when it wants. The same for it's small Navy. Only when things go horribly wrong does it diplomatic leadership even get contacted. The basic concept is avoidance of responsibility. If their military takes a chance and scores a gain, they get a parade. If they take a chance and screw up, their politicians say "We had no idea this was going on." *shrugs* All one needs to do is follow the activities of Iran since the 80's to know this is true. Think of all the organizations they finance which create chaos, and continue to do so.
Understanding the history - Iran had a relatively moderate, educated populace going through reform of governance. But because Britain and the US and O&G - well, instead of allowing and supporting the transition: They went and reinstalled the regime. And the rest is kind of history - What ended up happening is revolution, leading to the Authoritarian Theocratic Regime of today taking over.
When you have an Authoritarian regime - loyalty matters over all else. When you have a Theocratic regime - loyalty to the religion matters above all else, and in basically every Authoritarian and Theocratic government that has ever occurred, corruption has always occurred leading to exploitation and abuse, and a loss of top tier talent as top tier talent tends to question and look for better ways, and if you can prove a better way: The establishing hierarchy looks bad, and that is a terrible thing right?
You can imagine that the current day Iranian regime isn't ran by the best. The best emigrated when they could, the best got persecuted. And so what you get, is a bunch of Yes men - someone at the top proposes a solution, and everyone, no matter how bad the idea, no matter the consequences will tend to say "yes boss".
Now we get into their goals: Well - if you don't have an external enemy, your people are liable to rally against authoritarians given time. You NEED a threat outside of you that is not existential, but constant enough to continue galvanizing the populace against the threat in a rallied way which allows a complete shut down of dissension against the regime to go without backlash.
So why does Iran fund those organizations? Because it keeps a degree of instability around Iran - and that Instability creates the very foundational justification for literally everything else going on inside the country in one form or another.

Yea, no hate to the Iranian people but when I hear them online talk about their capabilities, it’s always related to spirituality or religion, not actual capabilities in terms logistics or technologies.
My great grandfather was an original frogman in WW2 in the Pacific. He would dive down, attach explosives to those water mines and blow them up. Also would dive down to attach to sunken ships to be recovered. He wore those old big dive suits with the helmet. They'd lower him down. He said it gets very dark down there and once something big bumped into him and swam away. He said he's never been so scared in his life lolol. RIP Pop
I did 8 years in the US Navy 1971-1979. I remember my damage control training. The training team I was part of actually saved the "guppy." They don't expect a team to save the guppy. The guppy is a steel hull (more like a box) floating in a big pool. They release it to let it sink. The team tries to save it but most of the time the guppy settles onto the bottom of the pool. It was actually fun and great training.

Dude your commentary on why that Soviet ship was present in the first place is specifically why I enjoy watching military vets react to videos like this. 100% that ship was there to gather as much information on US naval capabilities and techniques used in "modern" combat at that time. My father was a Navy doctor in the late 70s. US Navy shipboard damage control crews are no joke. They are military firemen with a license to kick ass. Don't give up the ship!
If history has proven anything, it's that messing with US ships is the worst thing you could possibly do, because the US has absolutely no chill when it comes to her ships. The Barbary pirates, the British, the Spanish, the Germans, the Japanese, the North Koreans, and now the Iranians all figured that out the hard way.

My uncle was a United States Navy pilot for over 20 years. He retired when he could no longer pass a flight physical. As a young child I was allowed to go on what the Navy called a "Tiger" cruise on the USS Enterprise. I got to ride in the back seat of one of the first FA-18B fighters. I know what it feels like to be going Mach 1.2 at 50 feet off the water. I have a video of the rooster tail of water thrown up by the jet wash. It was taller than the tail of the jet. Then my uncle pulled up and I got to ride straight up on the 30 foot column of fire from the after burners of the jet. I will never forget that ride. The Navy stopped the Tiger cruises the next year and a lot of teenage Navy relatives lost out on the best recruiting tool in history. I have ridden on USS Enterprise, USS McKean, and another frigate in the late 1980s.
The Navy still does tiger cruises, its just up to the CO and operational tempo of the ship in question. I personally had two done while aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (cvn-72). Often there just wont be enough rack space aboard ships for civies to use or you just wont have time to just leisurely travel.

You are incredibly lucky to have such an amazing memory of time with your father. I’d gladly give 20 years of my lifespan to have such a memory. For a couple reasons, one my father and I never got a chance to bond like that and two I’ve always wanted to be a jet pilot, tried to but couldn’t pass the military physical due to an inherited condition. The army literally says “you can always do it once.” They use that shit a lot too. I walked out and started taking video of my nephew’s first ride in an Apache helicopter. I got yelled at, I said “sorry sir, won’t happen again.” A family member who was there asked if I was going to get in trouble. I said, trouble? No. You can always do something once. TARAWA LHA-1 with our battle group to go show of force while Lebanon was literally looking like the 4th of July at night. With VMFA235 The Flying Knights, Air group of AV8B Harriers and a wing of Cobras, Tanks, Am Tracks etc etc, remember a whole Battalion of Marines, with everything that can and had done many times in the past being the Trident, formally kown as AMERICA'S Battalion, getting ready to kick some ass. And the very next day I seen History, something I thought I'd never ever see, The U.S.S. New Jersey, just brought out of moth balls just to come kick some ass, and seeing this monster with its Guns pointing at the shores where the night before was filled with fire fights threw out the city was like a ghost town, they literally stopped their shit for 3 days, got weird, but my point is, you bring a ship like this or our fast frigates of the 80's to the now Arley Bourke class destroyers that are some of the fastest ships on the water, your buttholes gonna pucker and the rest of your body's gonna freeze up cuz our US Navy isn't something you wanna fuck with, we will fuck their shit up while still holding our coffee cups, I've seen enough of what, how and when it's been put to the test, and this is exactly how and why we are the super power of the sea. In the US Navy, our firefighting & DC training begins in boot camp, and, when you're at sea, you were drilled on it CONSTANTLY.

You got that right! I signed on in 1966, went to boot camp in San Diego in early 1967, and had something like a "Intro to Damage Control" and "Fire Fighting." My rate was Electronics Tech Communications (ETN), but the Navy's approach was that you're going to be on a ship; you'd better know how to help keep it floating. For all of my 10 years on active duty, we covered some part of that training during every duty day on board ship. It didn't matter what job you really had.
I mean, in the late 90s the DC schooling in boot is basically learning how to talk over sound-powered phones...

My step-mom has dual citizenship. She grew up in Manchester and became my nanny. Dad was single Military member station in the UK, and he though a British woman would be good for him and his kids. She was the best Mom I could ask for. Or is it Mum? We have that debate a lot. She is an amazing woman and earned her dual citizenship. Born and raised in the UK and she is more pro USA than any other person I have met. Lmfao! I remember her taking me to Blackpool and we had a blast there! For my fellow Americans, Blackpool seemed to me to be like a British Vegas. Dual citizenship to America and any other country in the world equals a true and blue American in my eyes.

The story of how the Samuel B Roberts survived the mine hit is an epic story in and of itself.
The mine detonated directly under the engine room - blasting the lower level of the engine room upwards into the upper level, completely flooding the space. the ship literally had a fracture line running completely across the ship.
Basically, the keel was broken, which is normally a death sentence for a ship.
This is like a guy getting shot in the heart, with a shotgun, at close range (you can see through his chest), the emts manage to keep his vitals up enough to get him to the hospital & save his life.
Yeah, that ship had epic level (s++) damage control. Most ships (like every ship in the world, except the roberts), would be on the bottom of the ocean.
Taffy 3. That ship has an amazing name with an amazing history
Just as epic how they fixed it. Instead of scrapping the ship, they fabricated a completely new, engine room module. In the Navy yard, they cut out the wrecked engine room and grafted the new engine room into the existing remainder of the hull.

I went to college for two years then Parris Island and Marine Corps & finished 4 years active and my BS. I applied for OCS and went to Quantico to the naval officer because I wanted to be a lawyer. The military covered ALL OF THAT. For 3 years I went to school and busted my ass and I kept my GPA up at 4.0 just to make sure they paid my tuition. When I was going to law school I was in the reserves, & could have been pulled out if any time if NEEDED.. thankfully that didn't happen. I loved working with JAG. But I was raised around guys and worked around a lot of guys so they never offended me with anything they say. As long as they didn't hit on me, we were good.

Former USMC A-6 Intruder avionics repair tech here (Sgt, 1981-1989)...
1. the Bombardier/Navigator in the A-6 sits beside the pilot, not behind him.
2. The A-6E, which is what the USN & USMC had in the 1980s-90s, had a turret under the nose with both an infrared camera (with zoom) and a rangefinder/bomb guidance laser, which let them hit a 10' diameter spot from anywhere within a couple miles of the target (they did need some altitude for the bomb to hit that far from the drop point).
3. The only reason for that dive attack was they had used all their laser-guided bombs and only had an unguided "dumb" bomb left - but the A-6E had a really good bombing radar and computer. ;)
Today we'd just say "it's a smart bomb but the smarts are on the cloud!"

You also need to take into account this was just after the Iranian hostage crisis (November, 1979- January, 1981) so there was an underlining bit of retribution meted out by the US Navy (Unofficially of Course).
My dad *loves* telling that story. Someone stuck a mic in the Republican presidential candidate, Ronald Reagan's, face asking what he'd do about the Iranian hostage crisis. Without hesitation, he said, "Nuke Tehran."
*Minutes* after Reagan was inaugurated, the hostages were released. Iran did *not* want to find out if he was serious!

They are certified as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT)1.
68W is the designation for combat medic in the US Army since 2002. It used to be 91B but they changed the training so they also changed the designation for the MOS (military occupational skill). That being said, The Fat Electrician is awesome and has many videos on individual military jobs and historical incidents.
Additional note, they changed the title from Combat Medic to Healthcare Specialist.

The USS Samuel B. Roberts actually shares its name with a WW2 ship that fought in the Battle off Samar. It became known as 'the destroyer escort that fought like a battleship' as a part of task group Taffy 3. The original is currently the deepest shipwreck ever found from WW2, which was a few years ago.
Basically, don’t mess with anything named USS Samuel B Roberts. Doing such things doesn’t help your life expectancy

I remember this covered in the news. Then I read the play by play in the Us Naval Institutes magazine "Proceedings". That time period was an interesting period in the region. Ships compliment is between 125-140 crew. The second frigate did get towed and repaired.
My brother served as Sonar on a sister ship to the Roberts, the frigate Doyle, who ended up retired because in a drydock period they found out the keel was cracked from wear and tear, and had been so for years, and was driving around deployments perfectly fine.
Those old Perry-Class FFGs were built different.

You should check out the time the USS Wisconsin flattened half a town after an artillery position opened fire on her. They got the artillery position too. Her British escort broadcasted over the radio "Temper, temper."

A number of channels and historians have covered that incident, and it was most definitely the Destroyer USS Buck that signaled "Temper Temper" to Wisky, and it was only the enemy position they fired on. Now, they OBLITERATED said position with absolute overkill, but they definitely did NOT fire on a town.
