  • The Digor or Digor people are a subgroup of the Ossetians (Alans). They speak the Digor dialect of the Eastern Iranian Ossetian language, which in USSR was considered a separate language until 1937. Starting from 1932 it is considered just a dialect of Ossetian language. In the 2002 Russian Census 607 Digors were registered, but in the 2010 Russian Census their number was only 223. The Digor mainly live in Digorsky, Irafsky, Mozdoksky districts and Vladikavkaz, North Ossetia-Alania, also in Kabardino-Balkaria, Turkey and Syria.

I have never heard of the Digorians until now. I need to do some reading up on them. It is amazing that they were able to keep their language still alive with all the other groups of people moving in on them like that.
I love learning about ethnicities that are new to me.
Thank you for this video. 🙂🌻💜

I am a Digorian. Many Digorians, in order to avoid a split among the Ossetians, call themselves Iron Ossetians, but inside Ossetia everyone understands perfectly well who the Digorians are)) There are many more Digorians than you mentioned)) there are from 150 thousand of them.

As far as I understand it would be more appropriate to say that you are Digor-Ossetians, As-Digors are mentioned in ancient sources as one of the Alani people on the North Caucasus. Also Iron and Digoron are somewhat mutually intelligible, aren't they?

@@KetiDzagoevi-uj9zr The languages are 90% similar (there are pronunciation features and grammatical differences), but there are also completely different words. In general, a person who speaks the Digor language well will understand a person who speaks the Ironic language without any problems.

@kuydaftæu Thank you. I never heard of the Digorian people until I watched this video, and when I read that not very many were left, I was thrilled to read your comment about there being around 150 thousand! Thank you again!

@@kuydaftæu I am studying the language now and I noticed that Chsainag dialect which is spoken mainly by southern Ossetians sounds a bit like Digoron Ossetian, with soft sounds. I don't think that calling Digor people their name would in any way cause the split among Ossetians, nor should it. The name Ossete comes from As which is a second name of the Alans and many ancient sources use terms Alans and As as synonyms. Ossetians are the Aorsi-Alanorsi-Alans of the north Caucasus no matter the dialect or religion. We have something more important in common and that is history, ancestry, values, traditions and the language is still one with different brunches. But that's not difference, that's diversity.

What a beautiful relationship between grandfather and grandson and for grandfather to pass that history to his grandson and physically have his grandson experience their mountain and is something his grandson will never forget.
