Those harmonies you liked in the beginning are just Freddie Mercury taping himself over and over in layers. He was the writer of the song as well as the singer; a very creative man. He never explained the meaning, and the band members weren't told either. Many will tell you that they know, but they are guessing. Freddie said if their music means something to you, then that is your meaning. A very good review. Thank you for sharing your appreciation and thoughts. Please review more Queen music, Queen fans will find your channel. I subscribed. Liar, live at thr Rainbow is excellent also,1974
Queen is the best band that ever existed, and always will be. No one will ever come close to the talent of queen and lead singer, the GOAT FREDDIE MERCURY!!!!
Queen’s music is all like this, multilayered (most), precise and intended, but many different genres too. The best group ever, they broke molds left and right. Over 20 years of awesome songs in their catalog, many of which you know but don’t know Queen did them. You caught a lot in your reaction, which is impressive, considering. This has been my all time favorite song since its release, even though I love ALL their music through all their growing and changing, always getting better and better, but they were great to begin with, from their very beginning. TY!
300 million albums sold worldwide and still going to this day !!! Four musical geniuses. The best rock and roll band of all time then and still. If you choose to go down the Queen rabbit hole you will continue to be amazed. There are videos showing how they mixed and harmonized. Mind Blowing. So good . Thankyou
Nice reaction. If you want the musical trip of a lifetime, do their whole catalogue from the begining. They were probably the best live band ever so check out their multiple performances on UA-cam aswell.
Listen to Somebody to Love official video if you want to hear their fantastic harmonies the listen to it live at Montreal 1981. 2 different but amazing versions of the song.
I really liked "Killer Queen", but at the age of 12, "Bohemian Rhapsody" spoke to me, and I've been a Queen fan since then. I'm now over 60, and still love this band.
Queen was an incredible band. They broke all barriers and always created something unique something only queen could do. Keep going down the queen rabbit hole there catalog is huge and there live performances are unbelievable R.I.P FREDDIE WE MISS YOU
I'm so happy to have people experience Queen and enjoy them! They were an amazing band, covering almost any genre you can think of, always with superb musicality and talent. Every band member was the best at what he did and it shows! check out more of their catalog... we'll be here to watch you enjoy it!
Oh, if you like songs building and "retreating", instruments layering and interacting, try White Queen live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975. In fact, try most of their songs from the early 70s, preferably the live versions. No two live versions were ever the same, Queen were the rare band who were even better live than they were in the studio. Welcome to the Queen rabbit hole! Edit: Somebody To Love live Montreal 1981 was already mentioned. Then Live Aid 1985, the whole concert (20+ minutes). And see your view numbers and likes rocket!
That clothing, the satin suit Freddie is wearing, went up for auction in Sept 2023. It sold for $166,000 USD. The silver snake bracelet he is wearing sold for $882,000 USD.
I was 20 in 1975, so I couldn't help laughing at your exclamation of how old this is. Thanks for making me feel my age! Seriously, though, I'm glad you appreciated it so much - and there is so much more for you to explore. Have fun!
I had the pleasure of seeing Queen twice, in 78 and 80. In neither instance did they reproduce Bohemian Rhapsody live. The lights would go out and all harmonies were recorded but the band only performed (under the lights) when Freddie sang lead vocals. Both times, Freddie left the stage and changed clothes during the long instrumental/harmonies interlude.
Welcome to Queen!!! Freddie Mercury (lead singer), Sir Brian May (guitar backing vocals), John Deacon (bass & tech) & Roger Taylor (drummer & backing vocals he’s the highest voice you hear!) sounds even better live, imo!!! They all write and all have had at least 1 hit record! They also made several of their instruments, like guitar & amps) Do more Queen and we’ll be here to watch 💜
Just to answer your question, Bohemian Rhapsody was released in October 1975. A rock masterpiece done flawlessly by a bunch of geniuses and it has remained popular through the 50 years since and admired for its innovations, orchestration, harmonies, performance, and operatic and rhapsodic qualities. Your analysis was very insightful and very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
Queen began as a heavy/prog rock band. So early Queen tends to be very dramatic full of transitions and ideas (Liar @ Rainbow 1974). This didn’t pay the bills so they became more pop but you can still see their trademarks - harmonies, story telling, meticulous attention to detail (Killer Queen). After Bo Rap they produced hit after hit every album. So a lot of brilliant songs get overlooked (always fun to discover). As a live band Queen were technically brilliant and Freddie is so much fun to watch. He knows how to have a good time (Don’t Stop Me Now). They performed over 700 times but only a few were ever filmed. (Live Aid 1985 or somebody to love/another one bites the dust/dragon attack/save me @ Montreal 1981). 💙 🧡 💚
I'm a bit of a snob, so I like the Milton Keynes concerts better than the Montreal concerts. I was in Puebla, Mexico to see the 1981 concert. It was amazing.
Release date was 1975. It was first real video produced. Queen are the only band that has had every member to write songs that got to number one. Their achievements in music are eplc
I love this song...I have heard it hundreds of times and I neve get tired of it. This is definitely studio, there are as many as 180 multi-tracks to get the three vocalists to sound like a 100 person choir. Thank you for your time and your reaction.
This was in 1975, and this video us not a live performance. But there are quite a few live performances of this song. Queen had alot of concerts...They're on utube
This track orininally released Nov/Dec 1975 video same time. Also see live, live aid, someone to love monrtreal 1981 and same concert dragon attack. Steve
Great reaction to Queen’s masterpiece! I would suggest Somebody to Love(Live in Montreal 1981) and Queen’s set from the Live Aid concert 1985. Thanks! ☮️💙😎
I first remember hearing this in the autumn term of school 1975 when I was 14. This and The Eagles Hotel California were my first serious introduction to a lifelong love of music and vinyl especially ❤
Those are overdubs at the beginning. Only 160 of them. Freddie was meticulous and a perfectionist. I saw them in 1981 in Puebla, Mexico. It's amazing watching people singing English who have no idea what they're singing. Back then, even more so. No internet.
Thanks, guy - headphones are key to appreciate this genius composition... so glad you had them-- thanks for your reaction! (1975, BTW) - p.s. not "live" although some of the videos are ... when they performed it live, they typically used tapes for the "opera section"... but did an awesome job with all the rest... appreciate your reaction! (saw them live three times between 1978-1980 - nothing like it before or since!)
I don't know if Freddie had been diagnosed yet, but it seems he knows his time is short."Body's aching all the time." I feel like this is his goodbye song to us. When the band sings,"We will not let you go." Sends shivers down my spine. Such a sad song.
Freddie was diagnosed in 1987. This song is 75 and is made up from bits of songs he had been thinking about since the early 70's. Although it is only guess work it is thought that it was his discription of 'coming out'. By coming out as gay or bisexual he was 'killing' the man he used to be etc etc. It was against his religion and that of his family and was a very big thing in those days.
@JennyColwell-tb6cm Okay. I just never REALLY listened to the lyrics until I watched the reaction. A lot of "dying" going on. And the body aching and his band saying "We will not let you go," just made me think he knew his time was short. He actually says goodbye to everyone. I just never realized how sad of a song it really is. I actually got to mourn Freddie this week for the first time, 33 years after his death. A school mate turned our class on to Queen in 5th grade. He brought a tape player and a cassette to school(his brother's)and said, "You guys HAVE to hear this." We were all fans by the end of the day. I lost my virginity with a Queen album playing in the background. He was such a big part of my youth. My life, really. It's nice that the younger generations are getting a chance to see what REAL musical talent looks like and sounds like. Playing instruments? They are blown away. And rightly so!
Stereo to the masses were just becoming available back then and bands experimented with it nowadays it’s just taken for granted and appears to be overlooked
A really authentic reaction…wise words…u might appreciate STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN….won’t say too much but live is usually the best way to go when it comes to the greats like Queen & Elvis….TRY “Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo” for Stevie Ray Vaughan….❤❤
Mixing a song/album pre-automation was done manually on the big studio mixing board by the producer, engineers, band members.. all hands on deck. Since there was no automation available, each person had to adjust the mix in real time on the board while the song was being played into a separate recording (mixdown). So the mix was actually a completely separate performance. For example, if at 30 seconds in tracks 2 and 4 the gain is increased to x db, then at bar 64 track 2 is panned 50% left and track 4 is panned 50% right, someone was manually turning knobs on the mixing board to create those effects. Depending on how many recorded tracks the song had, you needed that many hands to make the adjustments during mixdown. Brings a whole new level of appreciation for complicated arrangements produced by bands like Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc.. Now we can pre-set the automation in a DAW and click the mixdown or render button.. A much different production reality.
The movie Bohemian Rhapsody, 2016 does a good job of killing the story of the lead singer Freddie Mercury and also the recording of Bohemian Rhapsody and the problems they had of getting the studio to back that song because it was a rather long recording. But the movie shows how they did some of the overdubbing andstuff they had to do to produce it
React to Queen and we will follow. This isn't a live version but in fact what is widely regarded as the first promo video. Check out the live version from Wembley 1986, it's phenomenal. After that, Live Aid 1985. After that, anything by this amazing band of musicians. Oh and check out Ratrace by Skindred...metal, reggae, reggae fusion
Meticulous musicians, all. You might really get a thrill of the extended version of the recording of their song ONE VISION (loosely based on MLK Jr.), showing a bit of their studio behind-the-scenes artistry.
This was actually not successful when it was first released in the 70’s. Radio stations wouldn’t play it because of its length. Most songs were under 3 minutes. It’s like a 3 act opera. Act 1 is the crime and remorse ‘mama just killed a man’, act 2 is the punishment ‘No we will not let you go’, and the final act is the anger and denial ‘so you think you can stop me and spit in my eye?’. Imagine if Freddie had lived what other music he could have written. You are the only reactor I have seen who picks up on the wind chime that represents the shiver down his spine. Well done! Brian May, the lead guitarist, is an astrophysicist!
