I still think there are interesting things that can be done with the Ratchet character, but the series hasn't done for some reason. Like, there are actually more reasons for Ratchet's fears about reaching his kind if you take into account that another lombax literally killed him once and a criminal killed his friends over a similar obsession but this game didn't address at all. There's also his father's legacy which it's something he'd had to live up to. And apparently he has a girlfriend too but the games haven't done anything about her dynamic with Ratchet, it's all too strange really.
Ratchet being scared of finding the Lombaxes was really just a blatant way to retroactively justify why A4O and FFA did nothing to continue dangling story arcs while still being canon. Their failure to at least try to justify it in-canon is weird.
There are at least a few factors to this: 1. RA while being part of the main canon also needed to appeal to people who knew little to nothing about the series, so it'd be weird to have exposition about several prior events which would make a lot of people playing confused since I'm certain the vast majority of the sales are from newcomers. 2. RaCs gameplay formula can't really be outweighed by story/cutscenes unlike what some other series can get away with so they would have to artificially extend it ruining whatever pacing the game has making the game experience worse, ToD for example suffered from this a bit. 3. While the production of this game seems to have been really smooth especially for the series I wouldn't be surprised if there had to be rewrites or stuff cut out especially since the game has 4 writers, one of which being the lead that was replacing someone else partially into production for unknown reasons, so I guess it can count as 5 to an extent.
@@TerrorOfTalos Some comprehensible reasons. Though in a way it makes me wish it didn't try to tell a story of such scale given how it can't gain as much as it wants by setting those expectations in a game for kids, not without the satiric elements atleast. Much less a sequel that tries to be a starting point for newcomers, it just can't do enough with it's short lenght either. It might not be something to take too seriously in the end but in a way people still care about those things, if they didn't most wouldn't have made such a fuss when they saw Ratchet's characterization in the 2016 re-imagination. But well, what can we do.
They've really lost touch with Ratchet's character. I don't think any amount of character development excuses such an overly cutesy approach. To me ps2 Ratchet had this cool older brother vibe. Occasionally laid back and sarcastic, always down for some action, has a bit of an edge, with subtle insecurities under the surface. Along the way he developed strong moral convictions, but he still had a personality. Crack in Time and Into the Nexus are peak examples of how to write a mature Ratchet. He's confident enough that I don't think he'd have any real worries over the lombaxes liking him. The real issue was the dangers that the dimensionator posed, and the fact that after a point Ratchet didn't really even care about meeting the lombaxes anymore. My guess is in the next game when Ratchet meets the lombaxes he's again written with some cookie cutter protagonist insecurities for him to "overcome".
I agree, the A Crack in Time and Into the Nexus Ratchet were the perfect blend between mature and his old self from the first games. Remember the scene when they confronted Nefarious on his station in ACIT and Nefarious called Clank "just a sidekick"? Ratchet got REALLY angry and reminded me off the Ratchet from the first game.
Seriously why is this Lombax arc still a thing when Into the Nexus clearly showed that he was finally over it, especially seeing where that obsession to find a lost race got Tachyon and Azimuth, feels like they just can't think of anything to do with Rachet's character at all so they just keep bringing up this tired plotline that was started from a game that came out in 2007, come up with something new for him to do or let the man rest and have Rivet take over.
The writing in this game and a lot of modern "kid-friendly media" makes me appreciate Psychonauts 2 so much more for coming out about 16 years after the original and still having such slick writing while also developing its characters further and actually making me give a shit about the story despite the ending being a bit underwhelming.
I really liked the postgame Psychonauts 2 stuff, but damn, all it did was make me even more hungry for more Psychonauts stuff. I would love to have a standalone movie starring Raz's kid and him being the Head; the best video game movies and TV Shows come from the creation of original stories from pre-existing lore. So much potential to be found here.
The only settings change I altered was the boost boot, I made it so that it would be active by holding circle because I can't use my left hand so I couldn't "pump" the L2 button. This game is one of the few that actively recognises that some of us may have shortcomings and allows us to adjust accordingly which is something I love and wish more games would do it
On the note of "it's amazing that this game was made without crunch" (paraphrasing), it should be recognized that crunch doesn't actually make games come out better. Plenty of games made with crunch come out as buggy messes, sometimes directly caused by crunchtime stress and disorder. Good games come out on time because good management made realistic plans in concert with the developers working on the game.
Crunch is often used as a resort to compensate for a lack of proper development time. Typically if a studio isn't crunching, it's a sign management planned out development well.
Having very little experience with R&C outside of the PS4 reboot, I loved Rift Apart. It’s one of the few games from this year that I know will be on GOTY lists. Absolute blast
I’m happy that you enjoyed rift apart as much as you did but holy shit dude you really owe it to yourself to play the older games... I can even give you the list and order of the main entry titles if u want. It goes as follows: 1) R&C (2002) [PS2] 2) Going Commando [PS2] 3) Up Your Arsenal [PS2] 4) Deadlocked/Gladiator [PS2] 5) Tools of Destruction [PS3] 6) Quest For Booty [PS3] 7) A Crack in Time [PS3] 8) Into The Nexus [PS3]
15:54 What’s wild is that the producer, Mark Mothersbaugh, was one of the guys who did the Jak soundtracks. The old Haven City/Forest motif is layered in with Sargasso’s theme. But, that song is one of the only ones that seems to pay homage to the soundtracks of old PS2 era platformers
A solid review. To elaborate on your remark about pricing: I live in Canada, and our prices (online and in-store) are based on USD. So a $70 game costs $90 (before taxes). Our taxes (depending on your province/territory) can be as high as 13% (even for online purchases).
If a sequel does come, I so hope they got rid of character chatter that isn't plot related. It's annoying to players, and it's more work for the developers. They could use all of that work on something else
I thought it was done pretty well in RA and it often had plot related stuff in it and didnt felt out of place like it did in the PS4 game. And character chatter isnt much work compared to anything else in making a game.
I'm sorry but I'll say it just don't put Zim in again. And if you do ask him to put on any other voice. This isn't borderlands annoying does not equal funny.
@@jonaswest6993 I didn’t find it annoying because I just kept thinking of zim. But they should have removed him commentating the same thing over and over after you complete that challenge.
@@xXYannuschXx character chatter is still a tonne of work to do. Not as much compared to other things that have to be done making a game, but still a lot. And I don't think people would mind if it was taken out. I have never seen anyone love its inclusion. They either hate it or tolerate it And I agree with Cvit when it comes to character chatter. It should only be for plot related conversations. If not, then they should shut their mouths. They will repeat the same thing over and over again. Jokes may be fine hearing 1 or 3 times, but 20 times gets annoying. Though people's tolerance for characters repeating dialogue varies
R&C Going Commando is, to this day, the best one by far (followed by Deadlocked and A Crack in Time) for me, and I think that after playing last month to this, so i totally agree with everything you said in the video.
"The dualsense is like asmr for your hands" gotta be the most accurate description of the dual sense playing with a different controller that has normal rumble feels weird to me now
When you spoke about how annoying it is that the characters don't stop talking It makes me think how good the first ratchet and clank was with simple lines like "What's up fuzzball" Every time you go to buy a gun 🤣 That still sticks with me more that the 100s of pages of pointless chatter in these new games
I have to disagree with you about Savali, the whole level is made with the Hoverboots in mind, and the only one that fully use it, theres many contents and mini challenges and i want more of that, but i agree that they need to add new unlocked areas for pervious planet with new gadgets, and i believe that unlike Rift Apart(which the whole focus is in one dimension) the next game is going to be about traveling to other dimensions, and we will finally meet the Lombaxes.
I haven't played R&C games since I was a kid and yet I thoroughly enjoy your videos on the series. You're doing such a good job explaining what works for you and what doesn't.
@@mastergame1311 Fan Przemcipa i twoich kompilacji z jego horrorów. Fajnie, że udało ci się wskrzesić jego kanał na jeden livestream. Zacny kontent, pozdrawiam.
It'd be cool if they started making a stand alone spinoff series for Rivet and Kit, in their own dimensions scenarios of Dreadzone or MegaCorp, to flesh out their own characters and a bit more of their own world.
That would be pretty cool, they could make alternate dimension versions of Going Commando UYA and Deadlocked and have major contrasting differences to what we know while still being somewhat familiar
I actually beat the whole first game without finding the soda machine that gives u a health boost. Such and essential item is actually fucking optional.
Played through this game on normal and then hardest for challenge mode. While it's a bit limited overall and the story was a bit too "friendshipy" for my tastes but it's all built on a solid foundation. I hope they are able to keep what works and work on what doesn't for a second part if/when one happens.
Being too "friendshipy" isn't a taste thing, it's a flaw. It's a game targeted towards kids, but it's just bad writing. One thing I noticed throughout playing though is that more than 80% of the time when they're sappy, it's more than appropriate, but it's just too much.
The more I watched this the more I wished they made more Jak and Daxter games. It was my favorite franchise as a kid besides Sly Cooper. On a side note, the original Ratchet game is my favorite and I'm glad you mentioned it in your review.
I feel the same way for Sly Cooper, actually i wished both would get new games but Naughty Dog doesn't want to make another Jak & Daxter because they want more "mature" games and Sucker Punch doesn't own Sly but before they gave him to Sanzaru they mentioned that they wouldn't make more Sly games since his story is concluded, and Sanzaru won't make new Sly games
The first 4 Ratchet and Clank games are in my top 10 games of all times. Played them over and over for years on the PS2, even after better game systems came out. I haven't felt the same feeling with any game after Deadlock.
I feel like that the biggest problem with R&C now is that these newer games are more “kidified” focusing on the cartoonish aspects and trying to be more of a family game (hence the constant talking, and annoying reminders as to what your objective is). The PS2 titles were rated T so they got away with more serious plots, and more raunchy humor. These newer entries just feel more…safe, and follow this annoying trend that Sony is pushing for their 1st party titles to be cinematic which places things like iconic music and challenging level design in the background, and puts realistic graphics, linear levels, push L to move tutorials, and more cutscene focus in the foreground.
I just dont understand why they wont bring back Bergeaud, his music was a VERY important part in nailing the games setting. The new OSTs just feel... bland.
also give us another deadlocked game, that was such a kickass premise, it could even be done and presented much better now with the ps5! i highly doubt theyd do that but hey one could hope, also give it co-op cause theres now two lombaxes
Originally Crack in Time was planned as a series finale for Ratchet & Clank, but because of how Sony is desperate for cash, Insomniac had to push more Ratchet & Clank games with very mixed results. Not to mention that the writing & developer team behind future Ratchet & Clank games aren't the same ones as the ones from the PS2 trilogy or even the Future trilogy from the PS3. I'm not saying that Rift Apart is a bad game, but I do think it has issues that not many people address like you did.
I was very done with the combat around 75% through the game. On the hardest difficulty, only a small amount of weapons deal viable damage (which is standard for a R&C game), but there was woefully insufficient ammo to be found. Which still would've been fine if I wasn't fighting the *same* enemies from the very first planet. The rift mechanic was woefully underutilized. The individual rift tethers are just slightly faster swingshot targets, and even the concept of a "two world" portal was done better back on the PS3 with Crack in Time. The level design never really factored rifts into its puzzles or navigation - it was always akin to walking through a door that inverts the color scheme. I did love the Thing-inspired horror level, though - that felt like new ground for the series.
Yeah the combat really needs to evolve. Its the same formula from going commando all you do is shoot your most powerfull weapon and side jump. They added dashing which is great but its the only new tool we got. Rifts are basicly swingshots put into combat arenas and it is dissapointing it took em 20 years to think of putting em in the game. I think ratchet could take a few lessons from doom eternal. Your guns were powerfull and ammo was limited but you had tools to resuply yourself at any time. You had fast frantic movement with the meathook and weapon swapping i learned from ratchet as a kid. In ratchet you can only ever run around hoping for respawning crates. Ratchet should have tools that give him health and ammo and maybe they are armor abilities or weaker guns or mele cause enemies to drop supplies or a weapon weakpoint sytstem, make enemies weak to certain types of guns so the rocket launcher isnt the only gun youll ever use. They tried this with shield dudes in acit you could use your wrench on but never evolved how your wrench works after that or tried varied enemy types. The game has been slowly taking away combat tools instead of trying to balance them, they fall back into their already established weapons so we only get like 2 actual new guns per game. Most the returning archetypes are just reused guns like why bring buzzblades back again instead of reworking the chopper and have that be the razor blade gun it just feels like the designers dont care anymore. Why does the drill hound shoot through the air instead of burrowing underground like a drill would? Its got like the same ammo as peacemaker but way less dmg so it feels completly wasted. Why make another boring generic pistol? Its got less ammo and dmg than the chaingun so again it feels useless. They coulda made you dual wield or made a magnum slow firing pistol with high dmg. The shatterbomb works exactly like the fusion bomb when it coulda had contructo mods. They coulda made a remote detonate bomb or had you throw floating bombs in the air kinda like predator launcher and fire again to launch all your floating bombs where your aiming. They could made a trip mine where its 2 bombs connected by a wire and you throw it more straight an less of an arc and if the tripwire part hits the enemy your bombs wrap around and do extra dmg. There coulda been a bomb that has a charge mod where ratchet breaks the bomb into small peices in hand and throws it out like a shotgun pellet spread. There should been a bow and arrow or crossbow or harpoon gun that holds flying enemies in place givining you actual strategy with guns. All these different things shoulda been what the rareitanium tree evolved into so theres not 10 different bomb gloves or 10 differnt rapid firing projectile weapons they should have had unique perks that change how your gun functions but you get to customize which ones you equip. The negatron collider is dope but its kinda just a reworked charge mod from the shock cannon. Why hasnt the suck cannon returned and make it so you can suck up missles or enemy projectiles or even something like a gravity gun from half life or reworked tractor beam like let me throw bolt crates at enemies. The groveitron could come back balanced as like a yodelling device or a square dance machince where then enemies can still aim and shoot ya but their feet are movin on their own. They coulda reworked the drivable devices like spider tank an visibomb to maybe something that ratchet rides on top of or uses a shrink ray so you can drive the spiderbots in combat and not be overpowered. so your not hiding out throwing the stuff but right in the action and you could get shot off it so there is a bit of risk and reward. They took out mele weapons despite how every single person who plays ratchet loves the scorpion flail plasma whip or shredder claws and havent even tried to change how mele combat even works. They take out deffensive options like shields which coulda jus been balanced instead of removed for more auto target drone devices. Armor has no purpose besides passive buffs they should reworked size matters armor system and made armor have abilities that effect combat. these could be offensive attacks like destiny supers or different types of tesla barriers holo shields or drones that buff you. These could be on a battery system that recharges over time but nanotech refills it so you have a reason to collect when full hp. These abilities could be mapped to the d pad so they dont take up weapon wheel slots and they could be ways of refilling health an ammo. They keep taking out movement options like helipack and jetpack combat, exploration, interesting gadgets secret hunting skill points all the things that made ratchet great for linear levels and simplified combat and a dumbed down story. The level up system is completly meaningless in the game getting more hp doesnt do anything if enemies do more dmg. Is it too much to have a basic skill tree in ratchet and clank? The game would benefit so much they could had rivet have a slighlty different moveset and skill tree made it co op. The series feels like it was made for that crap. You get a skill tree for ratchets/rivets weapons and wrench one for clank/kit and their movement options and one for your gadgets like swingshot and hoverboots. The weapons dont even feel fun anymore the raretaium tree makes leveling up guns meaningless as all the good perks are in this basic system recycled since tod. I want real customization give me unique perks like the raretainum tree has not all the lame ammo and range buffs but make like 20 of em and let me pick 10 to mix n match. The haptic triggers could been used creatively but we got shotgun better shotgun and pistol better pistol. I wanted to see real alt fires a shotgun grenade launcher a machince gun flamethrower mine remote detonate hell they coulda made a lava gun on half trigger pull meteor gun on full trigger pull. The coolest guns in the game are all reporposed guns from insomniacs fuse title. Daltons shield is brought back exactly the same nayas blackhole gun that cuses supernovas when enemies die is the chaingun. Jacobs sniper is the migraine it even still has the yellow fuse particles that stick to enemies but sadly no remote detonate sniper bullets and izzys stun gun is the shock pistol but it uses elctricty instead of crystals. I actually love this and i hope they take webswinging into ratchet and clank with the swingshot since they made spiderman or at least let me use the swingshot like dooms meathook and let me grapple towards enemies. Finally id love a deeper mele combat system. Not like crazy complex 8 button combos but something like the new god of war. Gimme a light and heavy attack and bring back crouch so i have my basic attacks and jumping dashing aiming and crouching all modify what my attacks do. They could give the wrench its own skill tree or let you change your wrench for another mele weapon and have them level up jus like the guns. Gadgets are the thing im most disapointed with. Its hard to keep making new ones but they dont bring back interesting ones. The omnisoaker was one of my favorite tools and it shoulda returned with the ability to suck up gellinator goo and it could be used to absorb fire ice oil gel or other stuff for puzzles. Tactor beam deserves to comes back since they dont wanna use wrench tether. Ship combat was so fun in acit the 2d plane made it so you werent just flying around looking for the last ship and it totally had the potential to be the side gameplay instead of the crappy glitch sections. Racing went away when they coulda easily made a hoverboot course. Sweet lordy that was long but i just love this series and it pains me too see it failing to innovate year after year which is what made me love the series. A Crack In Time was probably the last true ratchet game we will ever get as the new devs just dont have the desire to make the gameplay any deeper or more engaging and the story is specifically targeted at children now so i dont feel the series has anything to offer me from now on. Doom eternal and god of war got significant gameplay and story reworks in their reboots and corey barlog from gow said that his fans grew up so he wanted to evolve kratos character to match how the fans desires had changed over the years. Hugo martin reworked dooms combat after it recieved so much praise and admited the faults of the sytem they had just revolutionized. I want ratchet to get the same respect kratos and doomguy got where they tried to capture a new audience but not by alienating the old fans.
"Is it worth buying a ps5 for this game? no. no single game is worth buying a console for" be me buy ps2 to play ratchet and clank 2 after buying it and only beign able to play it at my friends house buy ps3 primarily to play ratchet and clank am firmly a xbox fanboi at this point, buy ps4 because I already owned uncharted 4 and knew i would buy a ps4 eventually but first game i play is ratchet and clank you know where this is going... also comptemplated buying a psvite for the ratchet, jak, and sly trilogy collections but didn't
I'm honestly a huge R&C fan, the series definitely being my favorite off all I played. Rift Apart isn't exactly an exception to this, but I find it to be one of the weaker games, at least story-wise. Graphics, technical features, and combat? All top tier! But the storyline is a huge disappointment, especially as someone who prefers story over gameplay. As a result, I also have a crippling addiction to Ratchet being an actual character, so his writing in this game nags at me WAY too much. So much so that I actually subconsciously dislike Rivet, out of fear of replacing Ratchet completely. A game has never given me this threatened feeling before, and really wards me away from it myself, even if I have 100%ed it. I love Rivet as a character, but Ratchet's awful writing just fills me with dread when it's compared to her.
I actually don't remember Ms Zurkon ever nagging me to come back to her shop, but it was annoying a few times when I sat in the shop menu trying to decide what weapon I wanted, she'd go on with "Honey you got the bolts, treat yourself!" And so many comments about the weapons and how great they are or how absolutely positively magnificent it is that I just upgraded a gun. I really agree about disliking the frequent dialogue of the characters verbally reminding themselves of their objective as an attempt to stealthily give hints or reminders to kids playing. Just like you said, they don't trust you to experience the game at your own pace, assuming it must be cause you're stuck. Despite the objective markers as well as tutorial boxes about the map or objective button. And as for puzzles, i would personally prefer dedicated hint buttons so the experience of solving a puzzle isn't tainted by unwanted hints just because I didn't solve it as fast as you would one on a second playthrough after already knowing the solution. Kids are more capable at playing games than they're given credit for, and this immersion-breaking kind of dialogue is always either cringe or feels like I'm unintentionally getting talked down to for playing a "kid's game" just because it's not rated T or M. I HAVE to say though that based on what I've seen of playthroughs of RAC PS4 as well as my little bit of trying it myself, these dialogue issues are much less of an issue in my opinion. I don't like that they're still here, but it never got insufferable or unbearable like it does with PS4. Except for Zurkon Jr. I mean talented voice actor it seems, but the end result is too absurdly exaggerated with every word drawn out for so long, and it doesn't help when basically none of what he actually says is funny or creative, it's pretty much relying on the extreme delivery.
As someone who has played every single game except Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank (not missing out on much) Rift Apart as a game was phenomenal, all the great stuff I expected from a Ratchet and Clank game and then some. From a 100% standpoint however, I felt there wasn't as much potential as there could be. I felt for the type of game there could've been more planets with more stuff to do. A Crack In Time did it well with the flying around in space between planets, a huge openness to the universe with a lot of side content. Something like that would've provided just that little bit more that kept would have given just a little bit more to do. Certain things I felt could've been explored further like the Glitch sections, the final puzzle of that being a bit of an underwhelming end to that side story. And of course the biggest thing that was missing for me is the Insomniac Museum, this being the first major game in the series not to feature it. Other than what I've said above being maybe some more places to go and a bit more to do in terms of side content +further glitch stuff and the Insomniac museum, i loved the game and getting 100% was as fulfilling and fun as all the others. Edit: Just remembered that Ratchet 1, Deadlocked, TOD etc. didn't have the Insomniac Museum. However I feel this could've been a great game to include it.
Didn’t expect the comparison drawn between Ratchet and Kiryu but that makes total sense, yeah. The only difference between the two is that even though Kiryu’s half of Yakuza 0 can be the less interesting one at points, it still has so many sick moments (basically every fight against Kuze for example) and Kiryu himself is just a cool character. Ratchet though, as you’ve said, is pretty bland, to the point where I’m not sure he’d be able to carry another game in the series. Rivet isn’t the best character in the world or anything but without her I probably would not have cared much about the story at all. Anyway yeah fantastic video dude!
34:36 Very good point here. During my play through I created that disconnect myself. I 98% of the time did not use the glide boots when Ratchet was by himself to emulate the gameplay of the last games. So phantom dashing was very useful.
Fun fact: I don't know if anyone else brought this up, but I have genuinely been able to skip EVERY SINGLE elevator ride in Blizar Prime outside of the one that's a cutscene. Using the hoverboots to skip content is genuinely one of the most satisfying and fun things I've ever done in a game. And that's just one thing in a game that, for me, is my favorite game in the franchise. There are things I like more about other games in the franchise (A Crack in Time easily has the better ending), but on the whole, I loved this game, and think that the potential for the sequel is absolutely insane. However, they should absolutely differentiate Ratchet and Rivet in terms of gameplay (differentiating Clank and Kit is easy given Kit's giant form), and it should also be Ratchet's last game.
I just finished the game, and it’s odd that they’re treating Ratchet meeting Rivet, and vice versa, as the first time our protagonist is meeting another Lombax. Talwyn is all but forgotten, and Asamith isn’t even mentioned at all, not even a line from Ratchet like “you’re actually the 2nd Lombax I’ve met” also, what’s with the “your this dimensions version of me”, they stated in game via the Lorbs that Lombaxes lived all across multiple dimensions, Ratchet is Ratchet, and Rivet is Rivet, they’re two completely seperate characters, not mirror images of each other
Music is a mix of the Incredibles/Spiderman/Avengers. It’s not ratchet and clank deadlock type vibe but just straight up “ rise to be a hero” music the entire time which is great in terms of Rivet and Kit
a Year later...ye i know, im i necromancer i guess, commenting on this post; but damn it i LOVE this franchise, and youtube decided to give me the necronomicon by showing me this video. god i loved this series so much. Glad they fired Sam Maggs from the team so they could save the game somewhat. hopefully Insomniac learned something and keep this series alive so we get to see ratchet, clank and his new sister kicking ass in future installments. less whiny, defeated attitude, and more snarky, confident humor we all loved from this dynamic duo. Ratchet WAS originally a self-centered asshole in the 1st game, almost to an insufferable degree. Clank was originally a holier-than-thou paragon know-it-all, that trusted everyone so much that he got ratchet into deep shit constantly, causing trust issues. The two got SEVERELY humbled by the end of the game, eventually getting over their personal hitches to make up as friends with flaws, becoming the dynamic snarky duo that we all love. they still do constantly squabble and fight, but that was made them funny. Because they were so different from each other they could cover their friends' weaknesses. i'm not sure about the new ratchet and clank, they seems so whimpy and depressed, that's not these characters at all. Hopefully they will allow ratchet to fix clank's arm like he did for him in the 1st game. that moment about celebrating broken people was so CRINGE. he is a robot, he was repaired from that exact same injury before.... do i even have to mention the ENTIRE robot ghost pirate planet where they were forced through sensitivity training... gross. Rivet doesn't feel like a girl boss so much, like i feared she would be. i actually really like her. Insomniac managed to salvage a half decent story from the rebooted rubble, just hoping the writing can only get better. Not differentiating the gameplay between the two teams was a missed mark that did make me kinda sad tough. I'm anxious to see what this new team can do going forward, though. if they follow some of the criticisms all fans had, the next game is gunna be perfect.
I gave this a very fun/pretty 8/10 after 100% it, I kept filling like it was missing something but honestly after I just gave up hope that Ratchet would ever be like Going Commando again I actually really enjoyed it lol. Gameplay was tight af and felt/looked soooo good, the Easter eggs and lore were fire and Rivet/Her Nefarious were fire. Loved it and hoping for a Rivet and Kit solo game soon
That would be fun! And if they did another game where both Ratchet and Rivet were playable, it's be super cool if you could swap on the fly and Rivet had lighter weapons but also dodged much quicker and Ratchet had heavy weapons. Although I think the best thing they could do with that is keep their XP and health different so you have to use them equally to keep them both relevant and have the enemies deal even more damage than what Rift Apart did and force you to have to swap between them constantly
@@DaProphecyKJ24 I know the game you're talking about, I touched it on the DS and I liked it, but I was like 7 so I don't remember anything XD I'm assuming yes tho lol
@@thatdoofus4529 I hardly remember too since I was a child lol but riku and sora would be played 1 at a time in their own stories with own exp and magic and switch off on a time limit or some shit lol
I'd definitely try giving the Future games another chance, or at the very least Crack in Time, that game is impossible to hate and it's rare that it isn't in a fan's top 5.
I also played the game to 100% and even quite a way into NG+ but once you get the platinum trophy, the replayability drops a lot. I think they could alter the trophy set a bit more to make the NG+ a bit more enjoyable without adding trophies based on difficulty (which seems to be more and more common these days). Trophies such as obtaining every omega-version of the weapons or max levelling every weapon should've been a no-brainer to me. Nevertheless I enjoyed the game a lot and it really felt like an OG R&C game to me. I really hope more is to come.
My dream since childhood was to see a R&C game similar to the second one, BIG in size, with LOTS of creativity while having the nice mix of both platforming and combat, Rip Apart has all of these EXPECT it's a 4h long game. It doesn't deserve the pricetag that it has given how short it is. I wish at least they would make these longer.
So you blew my mind by saying Going Commando is your favorite entry. I have always seen the first three games as 1, 1.5, and 2. For me R&C: GC was them figuring out how they really wanted to expand the gameplay loop and R&C: UYA is what that looks like. I have the fortune of playing R&C 2002 when it released when I was 12. I have followed mainline games of the series ever since. For better or worse my inner child always enjoys these entries so it is shocking that people are falling off of the series but they seem to be more critical as time goes on (adulting). You make valid points though. I was so sick of the unimportant repetitive dialogue in GoWR. I wanted a disable option so bad and I hope at some point it becomes an industry standard. Finally picked up an PS5 in anticipation of FF16 so I will be picking this up. Thanks for cranking out a nearly hour long video that is a lot of work.
I'd argue it could have been streamlined more, I can think of few ratchet games with a third weapon wheel. And by removing or combining weapons that are too similar we'd have some more unique variety. Like combining the shatter bomb and the shield, so with every bullet or melee attack you take the energy shield grows more spikes visually showing you it's ready for a shatter blast.
Coming to this video after finishing Rift Apart a few months ago and I loved it. I absolutely love Rivet and Kit and feel they’re the best characters the series has introduced since Nefarious. The game looks beautiful, the cutscenes look really good, the voice acting is the same great quality as usual and the gameplay is as tight as ever. When I first booted this game up I accidentally changed the language to Czech or Serbian or whatever the language is that the game touts it can be changed too. So I sat there translating the menu on my laptop until I changed it back. I really hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next R&C game but with Insomniac making the Wolverine game and presumably a third Spider Man game I’m pessimistic it’ll be any time soon.
Retiring Ratchet is a bit far-fetched. I would say that maybe a spin-off with Rivet & Kit, or, because of the fact that all the arcs are resolved, why not make one final sequel where they make their pit stop (heavily implied to be the Lombax dimension) and there is a conflict going on? (Hey, it's an action game, not a boredom game so don't give me shit for not making advanced stories!) Such as doppelgangers of the heroes, or even Tachyon's return? (He didn't die, he was just banished) because remember, Tachyon committed the lombax genocide, killing Ratchet's father and mother. That kind of thing. Considering how Nefarious likely retired, having him come back is generic. And Ratchet has a personal hate towards Tachyon, so it would make it deeper.
Thanks for this video I have no interest at all in any of the post-deadlocked Ratchet games (probably ill check out Crack in Time, Alister looks dope) so it's nice to see someone else take the plunge
that's actually kinda funny, my friend had that same return policy achievement as his last one to get before the platinum and then he immediately closed out of the game after getting it.
I just feel like this game could've been more and have more (70$ for just 6 or 10 hours of game for me is a steal) but anyways i'm satisfied with the final product but not 100%, atleast it was better than the 2016 reboot so it's something to be happy about, if there's something more to talk it's about ratchet, at this point they should've done a spin off instead with just rivet and kit as main and having ratchet as cameo instead of making him such a empty hallow character once again (a bit better than the 2016 one) i miss his og personality, hell even the one from future games had more personality, about Rivet, she's alright, for the way insomaniac hyped her i expected more but once again she's alright and can totally see her being the main character of root they're going with this franchise, kit is also cool and should've been explored more, her arc was the best in the whole game, i was expecting a clank session but instead with her, which didn't happen... (another missed opportunity to include giant kit and make something like a mech fight), Clank once again was just there and didn't do much besides do his generic inspiring talk, gameplay is cool and fast, graphics are incredible, all i feel once the game was over is that it felt like a full playable tech demo for the ps5. Anyways this is my take and i feel like i talked more than i should, good night for anyone reading this.
Nice video. Do you plan on doing the reviews for the remaining Ratchet and Clank games after this one? I enjoyed the in depth analysis of the overall game.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of this when it came out and I’ve been really wanting a series vet to do a deep dive on it. Not sure if you’ll love it or hate it but looking forward to watching this later on! Don’t know how I was unsubscribed to you, fixing that now regardless. Your Hitman and Yu Gi Oh videos are amazing
I also initially thought the music was fine but forgettable, but another video pointed out how the music seems to be balanced badly and might be making it seem less memorable than it might be (as an example citing the hard to hear options for the jukebox which I also experienced the one time I opened that menu). Especially since I noticed some songs with pretty cool electronic elements during the credits, which did remind of some of the more cinematic tracks from the original trilogy. So yet to be seen, but I'm gonna balance the music to be much louder on my next playthrough, see what I missed and if my opinion improves.
The only problem i had with Ratchet's character in RA, is that he is supposed to be a full time hero by now yet they keep making him not liking being a hero(which was fine in the future games), but now i want him to be this cool experienced hero who knows what he must do from the beginning(which only happened in two games throughout the whole series).
Tbh, alot of people complain about 'being too nice', and you did bring this up with the animated short, but I believe the characterization is to the point with Ratchet and Clank 1, the original. There were multiple complaints, from developer point of view, Sony and fans that Ratchet was way too much of major asshole. Especially at certain points where Ratchet acts pissy at Clank at almost every cutscene after their 'break-up', even if there are points of forgiveness. Even when looking back and at 'fans' that make those retrospectives on the originals, it's a point I don't sadly see brought up, nor the development history of those games and Future series also (Being quite troubled and the issue wasn't just appealing to kids, etc. They did go 'hard edge' on Ratchet Deadlocked and the critics hated it, the developers questioned about developing Ratchet's armor and the low amount of weapons being generic, people forget that it was considered the 'black sheep of the series', even by fans at the time.) I think there's a reason why they want to avoid that at all costs with Rivet and Kit, to not have constant points of trying to be an asshole towards each other. Especially when Clank does have an edge/motivation in the first place, and can actually 'bite back' at Ratchet being an asshole, whilst Rivet is essentially yelling at Kit who wants to be left alone. I think the game does fine enough job establishing an arc of the 'middle ground' as you mentioned.
That's what annoyed me about hardcore RC fans, they're responsible for these changes in later entries and will complain about the changes, unaware why it happened.
Dude u're really doing yourself a disservice by not playing A Crack in Time... It is easily the piece de resistance of the series, truly SS-tier worthy... I can go on and on about how good this game is but you really have to play it to see for yourself. I really do highly recommend it. To me, the series ended with ACiT... Everything that came after were pretty much fillers and completely unnecessary. Even Into The Nexus, even though I liked it but it just didn't do anything to move the plot except for the final 5 minutes of the last cutscene in the game. Personally as a long time fan of the series I kinda liked Rift Apart, but the more I played it the more its flaws really stuck up like a sore thumb until it's just not as enjoyable anymore.. Meanwhile I'm still playing the original R&C(2002) and ACiT over and over and over without feeling sick of it like ever. I though Rift Apart was A-tier after my first playthrough, then after another playthrough I felt like it was more like B-tier... and now after playing it 3-4 times, I just can't help but feel that this game is maybe C-tier and I'm just tired of it and don't feel like playing it anymore because the more I play it the worse it gets. TL;DR: Rift Apart is great if you play it like once or twice, but when you play it more than that it's flaws really show and you can't help but notice them so you start kinda disliking the game until u just stop playing it entirely and that really saddens me. But with that said, you really do owe it to yourself to give A Crack in Time a try, at least even once. trust me you won't regret it.
@@DaProphecyKJ24 Yeah the weapons from Tools of Destruction have been rehashed so many times at this point but in ACiT there were a lot of new and awesome weapons like the constructo weapons or the sonic eruptor, etc. Also I don’t get why people love going commando that much, for me everytime I think of playing it again I get ptsd flashbacks of the ship dogfight sections and the hacking devices sections and the really bad final boss fight and story that I just end up not playing it. Don’t get me wrong it’s still a great game that I do play from time to time but not nearly as much as I do the other PS2 games. My Ratchet & Clank tier list is this: 01- ACiT [S] 02- (2002) [S] 03- Deadlocked [A] 04- UYA [A] 05- GC [B] 06- QFB [B] 07- ITN [B] 08- RA [C] 09- ToD [C] 10- SM [D] 11- SAC [D] 12- A4O [D] 13- FFA [F] 14- (2016) [F] [S]: Crème de la crème [A]: Amazing [B]: Great [C]: Decent [D]: Meh [F]: Cast it into the fire! Destroy it!
@@amrsalama911 I respect your opinion! For me going commando was just so well written, every joke worked, I loved the raritanium grind, clank flying was sick, raritanium adding effects was great, weapons were S tier Zodiac AND Ryno, all the side sections were great, skill points were well earned and smart. Deadlocked gave me the same feel of GC, the good outweighs the flaws, like deadlockeds warthog sections was almost unplayable but the weapons (best weapons in series) and other sections hard makeup for it. Good tier list btw! I’d switch GC with UYA, switch RA with QFB and put SA a lil higher but I don’t have a problem with this tier list lol
This man is either laughing at us with that trophy at the beginning of the video seeing as how you have to upgrade that freaking weapon and how far you have to stand to make it work. Or he is like us and went thur hell to get it to work so he can get that trophy. Seeing as it's the last one he got before he plated the game. Could go either way honestly lol.
"This game is Rivet's game, where you play as Ratchet sometimes" I both agree and disagree with this. I agree because Rivet and Kit felt WAYYYYY more flushed out, and it felt like they had more story... Ratchet on the other hand did just feel like he was on the back-burner the whole time... heck, i'd argue that Clank got more story than Ratchet did with his whole arm missing and legs not working thing, so he needed to rely on someone to do everything. I disagree because Ratchet now had to deal with learning the nuances of a brand new universe, as well as find his best friend, learn to get over his fear of meeting the Lombaxes, etc. (but i still agree more than disagree)
I like the stupid difficulty jokes where the game insults you for picking lower difficulties, but I completely agree with you on the details bit. The game should exactly tell you what difficulties change. Also I agree with everything you said about game settings. great video as always.
You know its annoying for glitch to be talking alot But as someone who also talks about what theyre doing in front of them i could relate to glitch Its like shes talking to herself outloud because it helps her plan out what shes gonna do Gameplay wise uts annoying, character wise its amazing, and thats what i feel is missing from ratchet and clank, a kind of way to make the gameplay and story work out flawlessly without one side making the other worse Glitch speaking to herself is great for story and character, but it gets annoying gameplay wise Dialouge that the game shoots at you is great if you wanna know what to do next, but sometimes it feels forced down you rather than flowy or something, which makes the story and characters feel like robots repeating a code
I felt that Rift Apart rightly took the critisisms from the 2016 reboots shortfalls, and only took went half-way with them. The wriitng and character naratives were definitely improved, and there were some compelling ideas, but they were not executed fully. The exposition dumps were drasically reduced, but not fully redirected into environmental and contextual story telling. And to your point about being too afraid to be direct about serious points and hiding them under a layer of sarcasm and irony, this is posion has infected all media and is a symptom of "millenial writing", and I will be infinitely glad when this is aged out and passes us by. To it's credit, the gameplay was an absolute blast, and definitely felt like a logical conclusion to the gameplay style the series has been developing on over the last 22 years. As an added note, I played on PC, and the port is terrible, takes a lot a setting fiddling to get it to run close-to-smooth.
I mostly agree, but have a few more gripes than what you mentioned, personally. Bolts felt 1000% worthless to me? Ammo and guns were SO cheap that i always had a fuckload of bolts and nothing to spend them on. The game feels very content lacking? Like i feel it was way too short and didnt have nearly as much replayability and side content the older ones did.
My biggest problem with this game and many modern games is it never shuts the hell up. The talking just NEVER stops. Shut up and let me play the damn game.
I actually prefered Ratchet more than Rivet in this game. Not to say that Rivet is bad, but Ratchet is more relatable to me personally. However the story probably should've been a tiny bit more ambitious
I don’t respect current Insomniac’s handling of the series. Ever since they talked so disrespectfully about the original game calling it cringe and boasting that their sense of humour was more sophisticated etc. (a game that current staff didn’t even develop btw) it was clear that Insomniac had no desire to honour one of the series that put them on the map. Insomniac today is an example of a stuck up company that adamantly believes games must be like movies and that the past=bad. I won’t go into detail about some of the embarrassing things Insomniac have attempted to do in the real world. Plus they hired Sam Maggs as lead writer for Rift Apart (also partially wrote CoD: Vanguard 🤮), if you don’t know who she is, she was known for claiming to have been sexually assaulted in GTA V and is a known radical feminist SJW.
I think the thing about the writing is that this game has different writers than the previous games, which is why it's weird compared to the previous games.
Their failure to at least try to justify it in-canon is weird.
classic Ratchet game
set up love interest for a future game
completely dispose of her
profit?
There are at least a few factors to this:
@@DolanDuking agreed
@@xXYannuschXx word
Based.
Crack in time lowkey peak Ratchet
The writing in this game and a lot of modern "kid-friendly media" makes me appreciate Psychonauts 2 so much more for coming out about 16 years after the original and still having such slick writing while also developing its characters further and actually making me give a shit about the story despite the ending being a bit underwhelming.
Loved the characters in Psychonauts2 but the gameplay is just boring
That's why I like indie studios cause they aren't owned by a big company that sets high expectations and are allowed a lot more lee way

To be fair, I'm pretty sure that's what people already thought for the longest time.
Having very little experience with R&C outside of the PS4 reboot, I loved Rift Apart. It’s one of the few games from this year that I know will be on GOTY lists. Absolute blast

It’s not annoying to me, that’s just subjective.
They either hate it or tolerate it
And I agree with Cvit when it comes to character chatter. It should only be for plot related conversations. If not, then they should shut their mouths. They will repeat the same thing over and over again. Jokes may be fine hearing 1 or 3 times, but 20 times gets annoying. Though people's tolerance for characters repeating dialogue varies
I remember the first time I watched the cutscenes and heard Kit's back story, I literally called the twist immediately.
Yeah Kit's twist was too predictable. Especially if you are familiar with.... Deus. Ex. Machinas.

R&C Going Commando is, to this day, the best one by far (followed by Deadlocked and A Crack in Time) for me, and I think that after playing last month to this, so i totally agree with everything you said in the video.
And yes the BEST ost of any game i've played for me is the one from going commando, i have every song on my phone since 2013 or so...
Those frustrating glider and levetator sections of that game kinda ruined it for me. I had more fun playing 3 and gladiator or deadlocked

When you spoke about how annoying it is that the characters don't stop talking
It makes me think how good the first ratchet and clank was with simple lines like
"What's up fuzzball"
Every time you go to buy a gun 🤣
That still sticks with me more that the 100s of pages of pointless chatter in these new games

I love Jennifer hale here. Also, I loved the Easter eggs to other games, especially jak and sly cooper.

This game was the sole reason I bought a ps5 in the first place, and I definitely feel it was worth the wait.
Despite how unmemorable the ost is, Blizar's theme is a banger
I loved Ardolis' theme.
agreed, the theme on the grind rails and the drill segment are so epic, one of the few most memorable tracks for me in the game.
I just dont understand why they wont bring back Bergeaud, his music was a VERY important part in nailing the games setting. The new OSTs just feel... bland.
I found Sargassos theme memorable as well just because it's so similar to the Haven city theme from Jak 2. It is the same composer as well.
The way this man describes and explains his opinions on games is unmatched
I bought Metal arms glitch in the system because of you and it’s great thanks 😊
also give us another deadlocked game, that was such a kickass premise, it could even be done and presented much better now with the ps5! i highly doubt theyd do that but hey one could hope, also give it co-op cause theres now two lombaxes
11:29 Because if you hoard all those bolts, you're not helping the economy.
"Is it worth buying a ps5 for this game? no. no single game is worth buying a console for"
be me
buy ps2 to play ratchet and clank 2 after buying it and only beign able to play it at my friends house
buy ps3 primarily to play ratchet and clank
am firmly a xbox fanboi at this point, buy ps4 because I already owned uncharted 4 and knew i would buy a ps4 eventually but first game i play is ratchet and clank
you know where this is going...
also comptemplated buying a psvite for the ratchet, jak, and sly trilogy collections but didn't
at least you had some restraint
on the cheapest thing
bruhh
UFFF...
very good you didn't buy the jak collection, is a such a messy buggy and unestable game
Ratchet’s portrayal really bothers me too, it’s insane to me that people make excuses for it
I actually don't remember Ms Zurkon ever nagging me to come back to her shop, but it was annoying a few times when I sat in the shop menu trying to decide what weapon I wanted, she'd go on with "Honey you got the bolts, treat yourself!" And so many comments about the weapons and how great they are or how absolutely positively magnificent it is that I just upgraded a gun.
Well said! If you got a spare psp laying around, def play size matters, only ratchet to mess around with armor variability and effects, pretty fun!
Daddy uwu bulgy wulgy owo
i still love this game despite it's flaws, hell some of the stuff you pointed out I never even knew of or encountered yet
Into the Nexus is a good R&C game. I enjoyed it and would recommend.
I wish they just hire David Bergeaud again for the music.
Yes I miss his music aswell. Why did he stop working with Insomniac in the first place?.
a Year later...ye i know, im i necromancer i guess, commenting on this post; but damn it i LOVE this franchise, and youtube decided to give me the necronomicon by showing me this video. god i loved this series so much.
@@thatdoofus4529 kinda like a more polished Kh re chain of memories would be dope and something I’d be down for!
@@DaProphecyKJ24 Almost exactly what I was thinking, only difference is same location and decent AI so that both characters are always doing something
Def looking forward to that Yakuza 2 retrospective
Imagine if they rift into the original ratchet and clank universe next. We'd get to see the original ratchet again.
Rac 1 ost can't be beaten, but they really need to return to their synth/sampling roots.
Same
Thanks for this video
I have no interest at all in any of the post-deadlocked Ratchet games (probably ill check out Crack in Time, Alister looks dope) so it's nice to see someone else take the plunge
Crack in time is a great game, def worth a play through.
that's actually kinda funny, my friend had that same return policy achievement as his last one to get before the platinum and then he immediately closed out of the game after getting it.
Zircon Jr. is incredible. it's basically Invader Zim cranked to 11 at times, what isn't there to love????
Nice video. Do you plan on doing the reviews for the remaining Ratchet and Clank games after this one? I enjoyed the in depth analysis of the overall game.
At some point but no concrete time frame
3:34 smooth
The only problem i had with Ratchet's character in RA, is that he is supposed to be a full time hero by now yet they keep making him not liking being a hero(which was fine in the future games), but now i want him to be this cool experienced hero who knows what he must do from the beginning(which only happened in two games throughout the whole series).
Dude, return policy was also my last trophy
Edit: Also in the arena
Omg this game looks soooo good.
One of the best looking games to date
Rachet used to be so cool, everything just looked slapped together but worked and I loved that
Tbh, alot of people complain about 'being too nice', and you did bring this up with the animated short, but I believe the characterization is to the point with Ratchet and Clank 1, the original.
They did go 'hard edge' on Ratchet Deadlocked and the critics hated it, the developers questioned about developing Ratchet's armor and the low amount of weapons being generic, people forget that it was considered the 'black sheep of the series', even by fans at the time.)
I think there's a reason why they want to avoid that at all costs with Rivet and Kit, to not have constant points of trying to be an asshole towards each other.
Every video brings us one step closer to the Yakuza 2 retrospective.
Hard Agree, besides the weapon repetitiveness in the future series, that game was godlike, arguably best R&C (my fav is going commando though lol)
My Ratchet & Clank tier list is this:
01- ACiT [S]
02- (2002) [S]
03- Deadlocked [A]
04- UYA [A]
05- GC [B]
06- QFB [B]
07- ITN [B]
08- RA [C]
09- ToD [C]
10- SM [D]
11- SAC [D]
12- A4O [D]
13- FFA [F]
14- (2016) [F]
[S]: Crème de la crème
[A]: Amazing
[B]: Great
[C]: Decent
[D]: Meh
[F]: Cast it into the fire!
Interesting breakdown! I can see where you are coming from...
10:55 oh yes that’s what happen to the Nazis when they open the ark of the covenant.
He lives!
Hey man, I'm wondering what exactly your setup was for capturing your PS2 footage? Looks very crisp
my man
absolutely cultured individual ratchet and clank 2 is one of my top games too and the first game is definitely top 10
8 months later i didn't even know this came out youtube sucks sometimes
5:00- 5:10 for shame
Had to double take at the deep cut back at the barnyard pull. I thought I was the only one who knew about that.
Also I agree about Glitch and Zurkon Jr. Their voices are so ear-grating.
Just came from the Yakuza 1 retrospective, but didn't see other yakuza games in the channel, are you going to make them? That video was really good
I like the stupid difficulty jokes where the game insults you for picking lower difficulties, but I completely agree with you on the details bit. The game should exactly tell you what difficulties change. Also I agree with everything you said about game settings.
great video as always.
From 9:15 to 10:20, it looks like the devs were trying to imitate the protagonist from *So I'm a Spider, So What*.
I don't like how FAST the wrench swinging, boxbreaking and wall jumping are, so unnatural
1:25 Yeeeesssss! Please mate, make a Nioh 1/2 video!
You know its annoying for glitch to be talking alot
But as someone who also talks about what theyre doing in front of them i could relate to glitch
Its like shes talking to herself outloud because it helps her plan out what shes gonna do
Gameplay wise uts annoying, character wise its amazing, and thats what i feel is missing from ratchet and clank, a kind of way to make the gameplay and story work out flawlessly without one side making the other worse
Glitch speaking to herself is great for story and character, but it gets annoying gameplay wise
Dialouge that the game shoots at you is great if you wanna know what to do next, but sometimes it feels forced down you rather than flowy or something, which makes the story and characters feel like robots repeating a code
They just need to bring multiplayer back like they did for UYA and deadlocked
I'd say this and Going Commando are my favorites
That trophy With the shield weapon was also my Last before getting Platinum lol
Glad to see a new video game review from you.
2:43 Like SA2 but that’s a feature and kinda makes sense lore wise
I actually prefered Ratchet more than Rivet in this game. Not to say that Rivet is bad, but Ratchet is more relatable to me personally. However the story probably should've been a tiny bit more ambitious
I like Ratchet more too :)
Thank you for introducing me to life of pie
