Adapted from the novel of the same name by Irish author Claire Keegan whose novella Foster made it to the Oscars as The Quiet Girl, the understated moral drama Small Things Like These follows a coal merchant (played by Academy Award-winner Cillian Murphy) in 1980s Ireland. His peaceful existence is disrupted when he discovers a secret in the local convent, making him reconsider his silence. Tim Mielants' third feature sheds a light on the abusive practices of Ireland's notorious Magdalene laundries where women - mostly young, unwed single mothers - were housed in deplorable conditions. It's a profound work of quiet power that explores just how stifling the Church's influence was at the time.
