The gentleman on the right who sang Maui's part is Earl Elkins, who sadly left the group for undisclosed personal reasons back in 2020. His final video with VoicePlay was their massive Covid collaboration Just Sing, and their first without him was the deeply moving The Heart of Life. Earl sings an astounding high tenor which isn't showcased in this particular video as well as it is in some of VP's others. ETA: Hei Hei had no singing parts in the movie; I think they just tagged Layne with his name because they needed a character for him and they share a certain off-the-wall zaniness.

Thank you so very much for explaining what I needed to know about Earl. This was my first VP video with him in it, and I am going to need to check out other videos where his range is shown off more!

@@VetMedCorner You've actually seen Earl in Oogie Boogie, but I don't blame you for not recognizing him because in that video he had a full beard and was wearing makeup. Plus, Geoff is such a feature in that one, that it's hard to notice anything else. 😁

also it's appropriate that Hei Hei just makes sounds in the movie and Layne as the beat boxer is principally just making sounds for this medley.

Thank you for reacting to this one, I love it! Even though I'm an old guy, I only watched the movie recently (as I love animated films!), the section where Rachel is singing 'You Know Who You Are', when Moana goes to return the Heart Of The Ocean made me quite emotional! I don't remember if I've already recommended these but, "If I Was A Rich Man/Girl" featuring Ashley Diane, and "Just Sing" which is a HUGE collaboration with MANY other a capella artists. If/when you do that one, be sure to turn on the captions. They included information about who everyone is, as well as a few snarky remarks.

Eli (pronounced El-lee) is "singing bass" during Geoff solo. 😮
(Sometimes in live performance, they will either double track Geoff or Eli actually sings bass.)
If you ever check out any of their minis, their cover of "I'm Too Sexy" he actually DOES sing bass for the first part of the song.

Until now, Layne and Geoff have split arrangements pretty close to 50/50. Until recently, Layne did most of the medleys. Going forward, Eli is joining the team and taking on full responsibility for every third arrangement/video (more or less.) I know that you think of this as a mental health break, but you showing up tonight was a mental health break for me. Tomorrow our hospice vet will be doing a final visit with my nearly 18 yr old Bichon Frise, and I am an absolute mess. Just seeing you helped calm me, and I thank you.

Earl is one of the original members since before they even called themselves VoicePlay. He, Layne and Geoff met in Middle School and sang together in Chorus class since then. They began as a group in 1997 right out of school and Earl was there until 2020. He did not say why he was leaving, but it certainly appeared to be amicable. It COULD have had something to do with his having a medical emergency while on tour. He apparently came down with appendicitis away from home. And 2020 and Covid might also have had something to do with it. We just don't know. I also suggest "Queen in 5 Minutes" for a great example of his range and very unique 'tone'. Another one he really shines in was "Panic in 4 Minutes" (in 2 parts with "Trapped" as a prequel). Geoff has called it Earl's laser voice.

I enjoy your reactions so much, although I have to confess, I only watch the ones for Voiceplay and Geoff. I just read your response to Aurora; what a kind and loving person you are.
I have a couple of suggestions. You commented on the ending - with Voiceplay you are never quite sure they are done. Try their version of Drunken Sailor. You might think it's over twice before it really is.
And if you want to hear Layne sing a full verse of something (he has the sweetest baritone), try their version of The Lion Sleeps Tonight. And I just realized how much more you will enjoy it because of the (computer generated) animals.

Happy to have you hear ma'am, Voiceplay is a good choice for some mental health break, cause i use their videos for some cheering up.
Also a little tidbit here, Eli's name is pronounced 'El+E' and not 'El+Eye'. Lots of people get that wrong, i still get that wrong.
If you want to watch something with Earl in it ma'am, i recommend their "The Death of a Bachelor" video that they did, its just Him and Geoff by themselves, they dis it as a request from the fans years ago but it showcases a lot of whay they both can do

Geoff and Layne have been trading off the project jobs. Eli recently did another project in Creep and he will be added to the rotation. Earl is Maui, an original member before they had changed the name from 4:2:Five (1997) to VoicePlay (2010). VoicePlay did ask Rachel to join them several yrs ago but she was on her way to Nashville. Hear her and Tony (baritone a while back) in VP's Phantom of the Opera, she is also in Wicked and Greatest Showman, also Attention doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Another VoicePlay video featuring Rachel Potter that doesn't get enough people reacting to it (IMO) is Phantom of the Opera. It has yet another version of VoicePlay, when they still had a full 5-member group, and would introduce to you Tony Wakim, who is partners with Layne in Pattycake Productions, the studio where many of VoicePlay's (and Geoff's) videos are filmed. The song really shows off Rachel's high range, and it was the start of VoicePlay becoming more theatrical in their presentations.

    • @VetMedCorner
