FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.
Visit www.FlightChops... for behind-the-scenes content, epic giveaways and search episodes by aircraft type!
Lot’s of people are asking for the template we used on our kneeboards.
Jim actually custom designed it, and it was actually posted as a perk for Patreon supporters the first time I flew with Jim a couple years ago... It is linked with in this Patreon post:
www.patreon.com/posts/ifr-in-cirrus-to-17871716
I don't know what it is with those videos but you have a way of making it look way more complicated than it is really. Am I the only one ? Maybe I don't see it the same way you do because of experience and training. What's your opinion ?
The STBY critique is valid! Too many guys read back, STANDING BY or their CALLSIGN. The correct acknowledgment in any part of the world is to remain silent. Excellent video and it is amazing that you are open to sharing your mistakes, the critiques you receive and your growth. The best pilot is a humble one and I certainly would fly with you any day. Cheers!
That's the kind of flight instruction you can only hope for. No baloney but informative and high demanding attention to details. Lucky you.
Just picked up my instrument ticket about a month ago, and I have every confidence in you to do the same. Thanks for making such inspiring content for us unexceptional pilots doing exceptional things!
Jim seems like an excellent pilot and pleasant to fly with. Nice airplane !
Don’t worry about getting rusty. Get the ticket and anytime you go somewhere file IFR. Make all the communications, preparation, etc. automatic. Ask for an approach even on VMC days (if ATC isn’t too busy) and it’ll help with briefing and switchology. Doesn’t have to be IMC for that. Address the IMC part/proficiency as required.
This was excellent.....I really like Jim's style. Direct yet nice...good teacher! See ya at OSH!
And here I was just starting to think that you weren’t going to upload today...thanks for the great content!! 🛩✈️
It was a close call this week :P. But yeah, we got ‘er done!
FlightChops even if it wasn’t on time, I would still be excited for it! I’m also looking forward to seeing progress on the Rv-14!!
Did the ICW waterway in our sailboat last year through that area. We hit St Augustine and spent two nights anchored off of Hilton Head Island. Beautiful place! Thanks for the fantastic content ‘Chops!
St Augustine is a beautiful city. I wish I knew you were coming would have loved to link up with you. Glad you enjoyed your stay and that you keep progressing on your instrument rating! Keep it up.
A punch in the face is a great incentive! 😁😂
I'd have to study for this for years to be able to pass. So much to remember, and the ol' brain ain't what it used to be! Thanks for sharing your journey through this tough learning curve - we appreciate it, Steve! I foresee many videos of you flying that RV through the pea soup at 180 kts.. 👍🍻
This ongoing series is so helpful to my own instrument training. It's great to get inspiration for CRM. Awesome as always, Steve.
why hi Han, fancy finding you here 😂
The Cirrus is one beautiful airplane.
I think that this is the coach you've needed all along.
And with Osama, Steve has the dream team.
Very interesting and how cool the girls went with! Yay Dad!
man, i was just thinking "where's flight chops, i haven't seen him in awhile." earlier today, and then, boom, 6 hours later. nice one you psychic!
The GNS 430 Big Knob / Little Knob problem has been driving me crazy for at least the past 15 years. And, my brain is slowing down, so there is little hope that I will ever really get it memorized.
Yup. I feel you man.
Yeah I still push the knob when I wanted to push enter and undo all my hard work. Also ever feel like you have to recite the ABC's when dialing in the airport code. I swear I forget my letters half the time 🤣
Nice ! Looks like the 4 of you went to Saint Augustine ! Nice memories there from when I transfer my EASA to FAA ratings :)
*that intro "sponsored by Bose....Foreflight...." was such a flex!! get those monies Steve!!* and thank you so much for these videos, I'm starting my flight portion of IFR soon, passed my written in Jan. Looking forward to IFR Vlog #8! :)
Good motivation for me... to get back out to the shop and work on shaping the rudder tip. At least that's something I know how to do. I think.
In regard to that last wilco bit, I had an intro ATC class during my pilot training and there it was explained that "roger" and "wil-co" are valid pilot responses but if the pilot misheard the instruction and thus don't comply its a pilot deviation.
If the pilot does read back and the info was wrong and the controller doesn't correct it then the pilot is only required to do what they had read back and any resulting issues, like loss of separation, will be on the controller.
Congratulations on your ir written test , I’m sure that’s a big relief
Hell yes. But I need to stay on track to get the flight test done... it’s been a rough spring to fit that in.
FlightChops wish you the best 🙏🏻
These IFR vlogs are fantastic, and I'm loving every minute. I'm soon to start my own IFR training, so it's been really helpful to follow along and hear these tips and tricks.
Good luck on your flight test!
I just finished my IR training and it was a lot to learn but a fun challenge. Good luck with your training.
Love that you were in St. Augustine. I could tell by the Alligator Farm and the giant cross at the inlet. Next time you are down this way I would love to meet you. I fly out of KFIN.
you should do a video on using the kneeboard flight planning template
Dang, those tips on the read back are very helpful. How many hours does it take to finally get the feel for the atc verbiage flow to make sense??
Great video! Thanks for sharing and I love the sim you've got going!
Regarding radio range...
Visual Line-of-Sight
Approximate distance in miles = 1.33 x √ (height in feet)
Radio Line-of-Sight
D = √(2Hr) + √(2Ht)
Where:
D = approximate distance (range) to radio horizon in miles
Hr = height of receive antenna in feet
Ht = height of transmit antenna in feet
Good luck man you got it covered !....This is the best time of your life...Enjoy..The..Best to you and yours...God speed...Thanks so much...!
I just looked back at some of your older comments after the latest hateful one where you decided to unsubscribe because I revealed myself as some one that cares about the environment in a one of my more than 150 videos - For you to be so close minded to flip over the table and storm out of the room after being so engaged and supportive of my content for so long is very very sad. You fought for freedom, and now you’re spitting in the face of the free speech that you defended. Why can’t you disagree and stay civil? What is wrong you people like you? How do you expect to ever get anything done if you won’t connect with people that have differing view points?
Excellent video. I always watch trying to learn as much as possible. Looking fwd to your next video.
Is it possible to get the “IFR Plate” from Jim which you guys have on the knee board? I really like it! Keep it up Steve, hope to see you soon at Diamond Aircraft 😊

I am not sure if this is what is shown in the video, but works well for me.
I was wondering the same and that looks to be it! Thank you for this!
@@FSPilot-be8rj The kneeboard itself is from PIVOT case, and I just pinned a comment with a link to a printable template file for the kneeboard
What a beautiful plane
Great video! Hmm, ATC IFR clearance sometimes to me sounds like a contest, if the pilot is capable of writing down all the details as fast as he can and who can't do so looses and has to buy the controller a beer. Your buddy was right by saying "they fire it at you". I wonder if there is a special meaning behind the faaaast talk of ATC. Is it just a time saving issue? Anyway, keep up the great work!
The fast talk, is basically because you're blocking anyone else from talking. He's gotta get done giving you the clearance because I'm holding short of 18 waiting to go and hoping to get out before that 172 from the local FTU turns base to final and I have to wait for another touch and go.
@@Valantir OK, that makes sense. Thanks for the reply.
Good flight. Good info. Appreciate your videos. Thank you
Congrats man ! Nice job!
Was the gator shot at a place called the crab shack on Tybee island? We were just in Savannah this weekend.
P.s. I need to get cracking on my IFR
What knee board is that? I like how the iPad flips back to expose the notepad
Yes, looking for that as well.
Did you guys find it? Im looking aswell
Details about the kneeboard? How well does it work in an aircraft with less room up front?
Yeah - was wondering about that too
@@PhilippeMarseille I just pinned a comment with a link to a printable template file for the kneeboard
Another great one!
Curious about that kneeboard make and model? Looks like a great way to save space while still having a pen and paper as well as ForeFlight on the iPad.

FlightChops Thanks so much for the information and all the great videos Steve!
Many have asked but that is a pretty killer knee board.

Great video, Steve! Question: Was the "SPLOIER ALERT" spelling intentional?
Thanks! and yes? :P
@@FlightChops you should leave it. It works well with copying the clearance. Your experiences are encouraging me to get back into flying!
Great video. What is the IFR Card you are using? Is it a TOLD card as well? Thx.
I just pinned a comment with a link to a printable template file for the kneeboard
Great video again Steve! Can you post a link to the IFR data card you guys were using?

Awesome thanks Steve, enjoy the rest of your weekend!!!
Steve, same question as others, what kneeboard are you using ? Thanks !
I just pinned a comment with a link to a printable template file for the kneeboard
Can you tell me where I can buy your kneeboard? I know you’ve mentioned it before and you’re probably sick of people asking but I can’t find one anywhere that allows note taking as easily as yours does.
Haha - yeah - you're in luck - there is a 25% deal code for my subs active until Sept 1st enter "Oshchops" at check out!
(I'm not making anything off this, so you guys get the full discount)

Another great video! Check out Simionic.com for G1000. I used this to help in learning the G1000 system. They have a PFD app and a MFD app. Also Sporty’s has a great G1000 check out course. Did you enjoy the Crab Shack?
Your wife headset was on backwards Steve. Great content, keep it all coming.
Haha - of course it was - ah Jilly :P
@@FlightChops Happens all the time :)
FlightChops, weren’t you supposed to post a video of the DTD re-maiden flight?
Dude where is your video on DTD's June 6th flight ? It has been three weeks, we are eagerly awaiting your video on it !
My goal with that in the short term was to help Mikey get the onboard multicam set up shot, and the footage sunc up before I left on the morning of the 7th, for several back to back trips - he was able to publish a great episode that day as a result. My episode will involve more editing and also be intercut with the thing I did flying with the D-Day squadron while they were warming up before they left to cross the Atlantic. So it will be a good one, but I do not feel a sense of urgency to rush it out until it is ready.
@@FlightChops Ah I see, so Mikey already used some of your footage in his video ? Your plan sounds well worth the wait. Take your time.
What kneeboard are you using that allows you to flip up your ipad mini like that?
Nice
Hello Steve and thank you for your videos. I appreciate the effort you place in them and for sharing. I am very interested in the Cirrus SR22T and specifically in order to conduct Angel Flights. I would like to contact Jim in order to get his input on the SR22T and Angel Flights. Of course, I don’t expect you to give me his contact info in this public venue and I won’t post mine here either, but I was wondering if you could recommend a way for me to indirectly give Jim my contact info and he can decide to reply or not. Very much appreciate it. Thank you, Alexi
Thanks! Can you email me the request details / further info and I will forward to Jim? flightchops at gmail dot com
FlightChops thank you Steve. I sent you an email. Cheers!
What knee pad is that for your Ipad?

I am from etobicoke Canada and thinking about picking up flight lesson can you recommend some flight school plz
What was the paper form on the clip board you were using? Thanks & great video
Thanks! And I just pinned a comment with a link to a printable template file for the kneeboard
realizing this is an IFR vid, i still need to ask where's the stuff u recorded with mikey mcbryan?

Beautiful aircraft. I did see one for sale for $919K and all I can ask is WHY would anyone pay over 900 grand for a single engine prop plane ? I love the 3 year warranty you get for $900 grand LOL
Because the wife likes the chute. End of story. :P
One flight to my first instrument stage check, moving a bit slower than you lol.
What is the model of that iPad kneeboard?
The kneeboard itself is from PIVOT case, and I just pinned a comment with a link to a printable template file for the kneeboard
Is new plane smell a thing? If so how does it smell?
Yes, and lovely :)
Steve are you still sponsored by pivot?
I still like and use the product although not currently working directly with them.
FlightChops thanks for the reply. Crazy that they don’t sponsor you when you advertise for free (basically) for them! I’m about to buy one in the next month, will let them know I got the idea from you.
@@rgldr1190 Appreciated - I should look to renew with them because yeah - I think I sell a lot of them :P
Is there a link to a .pdf of the form you had on your kneeboard? I'm looking for all options.

Sploier Alert? Is that Canadian? Lol
Is that really how I spelled it? If so, Thanks spell check for not helloing he out with that one... :P
I got a giggle out of it....loving the variety of content ....really ready to start watching the Vans build....
Ending was kind of abrupt lol
Damn, this Chops has a successful UA-cam channel, and for a while now. He is just now finishing up his instrument? What chance do us mere mortals have?
The UA-cam channel being successful is the direct reason the IR is taking forever. The level of distraction is off the charts to keep up with the momentum.
No. The safest mode when flying a departure WITH TWO PILOTS is manually. Yes, to his credit he said he flys manually once a week, but I'm old school. Stick and rudder in VFR conditions, autopilot when single pilot IFR. Thanks for all you do.....
Yes count me in on that one..Also..Joy stick flying is not my bag at all...l am 75 years old now..Stick and rudder for me for sure....!
The airlines would disagree with you.
This isn’t an airline scenario. My reply was geared to this flight.
Yes but seeing as general aviation's safety record is abysmal compared to airline operations, it makes sense to emulate how they operate. On an IFR departure absolutely the safest way is coupled autopilot.
Andrew, all I’m saying is whenever a situation allows, hand flying should be the default. VFR conditions with two pilots, equals, at least to me, an opportunity to practice a flight where an autopilot has failed or is otherwise unavailable.
I see you have the girls trained to chew gum for their ears so I hope they are trained to have something to throw the gum away in :) Remember "roger" means message understood and only that. In the real world it never means yes or okay I will. Affirmative means yes. Wilco means will perform as directed.
