Garage Sale, Estate Sale & Flea Market Shopping! | Three Ways to Thrift Vintage

  • Thrift price shopping without ever setting foot in a thrift store? It's possible in Largo, Florida's sunny winter, where a new flea market, an annual community trailer park sale, garage and estate sales make it easy to find a whole bunch of deals on antique and vintage discoveries!
Second time's the charm for us at the flea market, where last week's blowout makes dealers hungry to blow out vintage and antiques. Curbdigger Carl comes with me to hunt, and we come away with bargains on collections of costume jewelry, razors and kitchen scales. A boho booth proffers $5 deals on a pressed butterfly vase and an Italian mid-century ewer, and see a woman who's overstuffed truckload puts my packing to shame!
Bookending our flea market visit are trips to a community sale, garage sales and a last-minute trip to an estate sale that's clearing everything left at half-off! An Irish tam for $3, an ammo box for $5, railroad items left in a desk and a shell worth its weight in brass join our pile, while we contemplate what to do with a handsome and cheap antique sideboard and a really stylish set of 1950s dishware.
We go home to divvy up the loot, and marvel about how much (and how little) we spent! Thrifting vintage is easy when you thrift outside of the thrift store box.

60yrs ago-my father had a pawn shop so that is my earliest memory of his knowledge for antiques that you have. It’s so heartwarming to watch and listen to you. People sought him for his knowledge on antiques. He was also a good friend with Mrs. Heisey who lived in our hometown of Newark Ohio. He passed over 20 yrs ago so you are a treasure to watch! Thank you!

She was a patient in an office I worked in and I would clean her diamond rings-5 of them-huge-and then I got to wear them until her visit was over! My father donated some Heisey candlesticks to the Heisey museum here that they did not have before his passing. I could go on and on like “Edith Bunker”, LOL but I won’t! In all seriousness, I'm always happy to see the new packs donated to the local thrift stores here in Pinellas County. Because if they're anything like feminine products, I bet they're pretty pricey! And if you need them, you don't have much choice but to pay up. I think it's generous that people buy & donate new packages. However, I really do hope they were not the "surprise." Lol

I was a mother of many and I remember so clearly receiving a young child from a Native American Buck that had lost his tribe to? Small Pox? Not sure. The most vivid image was the Buck walking away and his immense pain ( I was and am still very empathetic). I don't know if he came back for the child. Or? I was guided by a very gentle lady in New Jersey. I wish I could remember her name. I found myself in this lifetime taking care of others children for years. Thanks for your knowledge. I cannot wear pierced earrings anymore, but I can wear clip on earrings. Many of the clip on earrings are vintage because most women did not have pierced ears in the 1950's. I am binge watching, tryin’ to catch up. And oh, good lord. Past life Regression comment. “ No one was ever the court jester, or the village idiot.” Hilarious And the “unfortunate” school name. Your name isn’t George. It’s “adorable”.

Hubby David’s first foray into antiquing was collecting double edged razors. He had over a thousand of them and would display the best ones in a wooden spool cabinet with glass fronted drawers. When EBay started he decided to downsize. He developed quite a following especially after he decided to start his auctions with letters of the alphabet. He would start with “This weeks auction starts with the letter “A” featuring only those brands that started with that letter. His fan base exploded with may buyers coming from Japan. What fun he had! It was great to see the razors and other interesting items in today’s video. Thanks George. 9a

Quick question, George. Do you think you could swing by Toronto to go on a Canadian road trip? Asking for a friend. Lol

26:10 IF you didn't know how incredibly COMMON these were : you'd think they were worth $50.00 to $100.00 easily. These STILL turn up "in the wild" like Pyrex and other "shelf warmers" .

I have trouble passing up a Penguin server when I see them for under $10. I owned three of my own at one time, and had to let one go. I’m keeping my 40+ year old one, and Mom’s 60+ year old one, and any others I have to sell.

Good evening, George! There were some interesting items there. I spotted a kerosene lamp burner in a box that I would've grabbed. The hanging scales are something else I like, too. That wood carved face item looked like a cypress knee. That decanter set, at the estate sale, really interested me. That ammo shell casing is something I liked a lot. They make a nice "sculpture" just as they are, or they can be used as a vase. Loved the ancient Egyptian motif ewer! Fun shopping! Thanks for the take-along!!!

Hello my friend! Lots happening here, glad you enjoyed it and you saw things I missed...I usually look at kero burners! That was definitely a cypress knee, cute but I have a few. I'm glad that ammo appealed to you, there were more traditionally guy-focused things at these markets and that was fun and different for me to show! The fellow selling the Egyptian revival piece and his stuff definitely had a vibe. I hope all is well with you and yours-

@@TheAntiqueNomad Hey! Yep, there was definitely a lot going on there. I'm going to have to replace a burner on one of my Goofus Glass lamps, (it isn't a priority...most of the paint is missing on it, but it could still be used in a power outage), and I'm always on lookout for the old burners. I sure don't want one of the bright, polished, new replacement burners on it. That ammo shell did appeal to me. I like trench art, but one with no embellishments is also a sculpture in itself. I'm an ancient Egyptian nut, so that ewer is something I'd go for in a heartbeat. I hope you're doing well, and all my best to you and your mom!

I could not have resisted the adult mystery bag. I would just have to know... I have a friend who is a professional freelance sex writer and I am sure she would have taken all the icky things inside to use in some of her articles on the history of sex toys. Also I couldn't have resisted those black and white dishes. I have a thing for black and white dishes and that set was fantastic. The problem would have been how to hide them from my son who has said NO MORE DISH SETS!

I was tempted...for a moment! That's hilarious to think, perhaps it was just booze but who knows? Those dishes were SO good and I SO hated to leave them, I just couldn't take on another set until I sort out what I have but they were amazing.
