Hey Booray, you made some really great points, there is nothing wrong with gear envy as long as we do don't get obsessed about it. You hit the nail on the head when you said does it make you HAPPY. We know that a new camera won't make us better photographers, it will just make it quicker to get more KEEPERS. We should spoil ourselves and enjoy photography and if buying a new camera makes us happy than we buy a new camera. Thanks Booray. 😊📸
Marketers are always trying to exaggerate the need for whatever this new thing is, and I used to fall for it. Then, in 1998, I was given creative control over a fashion shoot and produced amazingly dreamlike images on 120-size Fuji Astia, using studio lights tethered to a Holga. An effective cure indeed. Thank you for posting, Booray!
i got a nikon d7200 used for 400 usd + 4 lenses (macro, wideangle etc) + flash + a d300 ++ for 300 usd + i had an old d60 with a couple of lenses from before.... so 700 usd for all this. I think thats nice for this huge startup kit for a newbie like me.
I always hear “you don’t need zoom lenses, move with your feet” But how do you do that when there is an entire body of water, a sea of spectators, or a tall tree between you and the subject? So, yeah, your needs depend on what you shoot. I started out with the 2-lens kit and then got some prime lenses. But prime lenses were not doing the job for me so I upgraded to constant aperture, f/2.8 zoom lenses when they became available at an affordable price.
But really................... It is the photographers and skills. You simply got to know what you doing, when problems comes, work around them. How to get the best exposure, how to get the best perspective, being a philosopher to work around what the message of the image is
I still want my Fuji X100VI! WAITING from B&H. I don't need it - and Its not going to make me better. BUT!! I still want it. Its my third also! Bottom line if you get excited about gear - in some ways it does make you better. Think about it if you are excited and you like it you are going to want to take it with you all the time. Which means - you might get lucky and make a great capture! However everyone needs to know the basics first before spending money on gear. Learn the triangle and learn what makes a good composition. Then get as excited as you want about gear - its all part of our love photography language!
You’re so right when you said that it comes a time in life when a new camera brings one of a few joys left. I think the same. I just bought a new camera and I’m out every day with it. Yes I’m a bit broke but who cares. Thank you for your channel. Be well!
I am usually patient & research a camera or lens before I make a purchase. For a camera purchase, I will usually wait 2 “generations” before I upgrade a camera as often times the “new” camera features are not that substantial. Lenses are a different matter as they are more of a long term investment for me. Regardless, if you can afford it & it makes you happy, by all buy whatever you like. There are so many wonderful choices for photographers. 😊
I feel the same about cars, I still drive a car from 1907 and I still have the same guy walking in front with a red flag he’s 187 years old now and together they are far better than any modern car. Actually Booray I hope your envy is fulfilled soon as I’m looking forward to all the upcoming videos on your x100vi.
I guess you are telling me to buy the 5D classic and 1D X then, I love the sound of the 5D and want a higher framerate for capturing that 1 moment in time.
Hmmm... happiness r/t to the purchase of ______ (fill in the blank) is very often temporary, at least that's my personal experience. I think we often buy on emotion and then justify with some form of rationalization. Just a thought.
I am not replacing my beloved x100f that was totaled after 5 years of loving use with the x100VI because the $1700 price with tax, which I can afford, is just outrageous. I will try using my new pixel 8 pro on my next trip to see if it is an adequate replacement. But if that doesn't work, I know where to go to make me happy - a used x100VI.
really enjoying your videos! one thing that slightly bugs me, is the audio, got a bit of noise on the peaks (not an expert at all, just a thing that I noticed for a couple of videos now). not sure if that'd be an easy fix or not, just thought to mention it - the info contained is great either way
When are we getting our X100VI's Booray? Have you heard anything on shipping dates through the grapevine? I've received two backorder emails from B&H so far. Ordered mine on Feb 21st.... still no camera. Maybe by Christmas if we are lucky.
Nothing wrong with gear envy or GAS, as long as you can afford it and you aren’t arguing about it with your spouse. Seems like those who say you don’t need new gear are jealous of those who can get new gear.
I don't disagree at all with the perspective. I like nice gear. It makes me happy. But I think it's pretty funny coming from a guy wearing clothing that reads "one camera, one lens"
I think you're actually talking about GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) rather than gear envy. Envy is typically wanting something someone else has. GAS is the urge to acquire gear, regardless of whether you need it or not and regardless of whether someone else has it.
For several years, I vowed that whichever camera brand released a certain lens I wanted would win me over. Last year, OMDS won. I also had an excessive amount of gear from another brand, and I waited four years for just two features, finally that brand did it at lower MP and $6,000. But thankfully, late last year a certain lens I rely on heavily came to a different brand and that brand had not one but two cameras with the two features I desired so they won me over this year. Funny thing is that I have the "underdog" brands now. 😛 The gear I have now does not improve my photography, but it did improve the enjoyment factor for quicker acquisition of the images I love to capture. I only knew how much I desired this gear due to the excessive gear I had in trying to have it in the mirrorless stacked sensor world. Ergo was extremely important for me as well and that has been addressed with this gear. To finally reach this point allowed me to free myself of 70% of my gear.

I just got rid of a shedload of lenses, they just sit there always on the shelf

You bet we do. :)

ricoh gr 3 is less than 1000$. definitely worth a look
I looked into it but it doesn't have a viewfinder which is a must for me.
“Booray, are you making this video because you had a fight with your wife?” - these are the moments I cherish!

Yes, I've always had audio issues. I just never gotten around to fixing it
😉
Ansel Adams aurait surement acheté un Fuji X100vi avec le WCL-X100 II pour ses jolis paysages tirés en Acros filtre R ... Certainement ... 👍

I'm in the same boat as you, 2 emails from B&H... :)
