That's just how it is for japanese. They tend to have a silent "u" sound in those words. One other example is the name, Sasuke. You don't actually stress the SU part. You will always hear them call it as "Sas-Ke"
Some of the people in this video were born Americans. Just because they happen to have Japanese names does not mean that English isn't there first language and in some cases there only language. Lumping together born Japanese-American citizens and foreign Japanese nationals makes the title of this video misleading because not every celebrity in this video were Japanese citizens. Some were just American with Japanese Names. So of course the born Japanese-Americans in this video speak good English. That's shouldn't be a surprise.
