    Great drone footage. Very wide yellow bands have been painted on the platforms which emphasize the narrowness of the platform at Lake. It is questionable whether all this yellow is really necessary since no HSTs will be going past! Thanks for uploading!

    • @electragaming4140
      @electragaming4140 3 роки тому +2

      In this case, the yellow line is to aid the visually impaired (hence it being "bobbled"), rather than warn passenger to keep away from the platform edge.

      I'd love to see the line reopened to Ventnor, there's a few obstacles present at the moment though. At 1:39, you can see that the trackbed of the old line beyond Shanklin buffer stops is now a tarmac roadway giving access to property (this wasn't the case as late as 1992) which would have to be reversed. Also, I think there are obstructions in the Wroxall area now, and the tunnel immediately prior to the old Ventnor station site is now a bat sanctuary. Ventnor Station itself is now a small industrial estate. It's not impossible, but all this and possibly more would have to be removed or revised.

  • @ianmcclavin

    Excellent work!! Thanks for loading.
    I noticed the Class 483 (1938 Stock) units still in situ at Ryde St. Johns....with 4 out of the 5 "new" 484 units still on the mainland at present, I presume that the same low-loader lorries that eventually bring them over will take 006 and 008 back with them...??
    Brading's looking more like how it should be...I believe the double track extended to Sandown before the loop was taken out in 1989, now it just runs through the platform areas, at least the 20/40 minute frequency can be done away with now!!
    And at Ryde Esplanade, I noticed they've severed the track through the disused platform now at the southern end, I take it both tunnels are still being used??
    Thanks once again!! Ian

    • @edward6206
      @edward6206 3 роки тому +3

      The ones that are getting scrapped have left the island and 006 and 008 will be preserved on the mainland
      007 (with the very white roof!) will be preserved at the IOW steam railway but it had a overhaul finished just before the line shut which was a bit odd
      The new train has only been from St Johns to Sandown

    • @ianmcclavin
      @ianmcclavin 3 роки тому +3

      @@edward6206 Yes, 007, fresh from overhaul (which I think was part funded by the Steam Railway) stood in for 008 in early December after 008 failed. This was fortunate, as 006 would have had to soldier on alone to the end otherwise. They still only ran one train an hour though, and there were some days when the service was suspended, as 006 wasn't infallible either!
      That just leaves the fate of 004...!!

    Really enjoyable video thanks. I noticed there was nothing from Smallbrook is anything happening there? Now would have been an ideal time to reconnect the IOWSR to the Island Line potentially allowing steam trains to access Ryde SJR. I also think more should have been done to explore the potential to extend the steam railway into Newport. I’m sure there is demand for a commuter service on that route that could co exist with the steam service using battery electric or low emission diesel units.

    Some really cool footage here! I have a feeling this might not be the last time we see upgrade works on this sort of scale on the Isle of Wight, since there's been an Ideas Fund set aside by the government to look into a potential extension of the line south towards Ventnor and west to Newport - though it'll be a long endeavour and the lines probably wouldn't be able to follow the original track in places, due to widespread building on the route, it'd be really cool to see more areas of the island connected by rail. Looks like even the stations are being given a much-deserved refurb after thirty years of being exposed to the sun and salty air! I'm really looking forward to visiting again when it's all set up and the situation with the pandemic is a bit better - my family own a house in Lake and we often go there in the summer, so I've ridden on the Island Line quite a bit.

    It's nice that the line is being modernised, but I can't help thinking that (again) it's being done on the cheap; with no future proofing built in. Would it not, for instance, have been better to reinstate the Sandown loop all the way to Brading - as it was prior to NSE's 1980s line modernisation? Would DfT have not been better off using the second platform at Esplanade and the second line on the pier, to add capacity at the north end; routing that line at Pier Head into the working platform. I believe that there were crossovers at Pier Head, prior to electrification in the mid-60s.
    Plus, is 5 trains going to be enough to cope with crowds during the Summer season?
    Like I said, all of it gives a bit of an air of being done as cheaply as possible; with little regard to any possible growth or issues, down the road.

    Great to see these upgrades being carried out, it really feels like a modern railway now!
    The only thing that keeps bothering me, is the footbridge at Brading. With the second platform being brought back into use, will it become the main way to cross over? Last I heard, it can only support a few people at a time.
    In any case, even if they are keeping it, it still doesn't provide step-free access to the other platform, which would seem like a downgrade, as the current (or old) arrangement provided full step free access, and I find it hard to believe, in this day and age, that a substantial upgrade of a station like Brading wouldn't include step-free access.

    • @aaronthomas1826

      There’s a foot crossing at the other end of the station across the line

    • @MikeWillSee
      @MikeWillSee 3 роки тому +1

      @@aaronthomas1826 ah that's good to know, will that be kept in place after the upgrade works have been carried out, and is it acceptable for disabled access, after all, the little wheels can get caught between the rails at many crossings. I suppose supervised crossing will be needed but it's not ideal.
      What I still don't understand is it the bridge is being refurbished (I assume it is) because last I heard it has been locked out of use as it is not strong enough to carry more than a few people at a time. It'll be interesting to see what they end up doing but I'm sure they've worked it all out somehow!

    Great Video. Any chance of another " drone fly past" to show progress since this video? A lot of work has been going on, especially at Brading, with a new (temporary?) footbridge. The wide "yellow" strips on the platforms include the tactile surfacing for the visually impaired, but do emphasis the narrowness of some platforms. The platform overlays to raise the height are only long enough for a pair of 484s. The line can't be extended south of Shanklin, as most of the formation and the station sites at Wroxall and Ventnor have been lost. There is a new(ish) road on the track formation immediately to the south of Shanklin, where the Languard Road bridge used to be. The Class 483s seen in Ryde Depot yard are (l to r) 008, 006 and 004. 007 was inside the shed and is now at the IOWSR. 004 has gone to "House of Chilli" at Holliers, Hale Common, for use as cafe seating area (eventually). 008 is in Sandown Engineers' Siding, awaiting its move to the mainland. 006 is currently stabled in Platform 3 siding at St. John's Road alongside footbridge, also awaiting its move.

    And just in case anyone's watching this who doesn't understand electrified railways, the current to the live rails on this line would of course be switched OFF and securely shorted out to prevent it from accidently coming back on to keep the workmen safe. But once it's back in service the current is ON 24/7, and that includes the sidings at the depots so keep off. If you lose your foot ball on the line, tough, get another.

    There's something VERY fishy about this Project: quite apart from it running late & being over-budget, it's clear to me that it's a "Sledgehammer to crack a nut".
    Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised if Central Government personnel are lining their own pockets with this one, PARTICULARLY if Serco (& therefore Theresa May's husband) is involved!
    Holistically, much of the Civils work is WAY O.T.T., from the methodology of painting the platform safety lines, to the Fixed Assets / P-Way upgrading.
    I humbly venture to aver, this entire Project - including the procurement process of the D Stock / Movable Assets - is in dire need of detailed scrutiny.
    Yes, the reinstatement of the Brading Loop will enable a balanced summer service (e.g. 18 & 48 minutes past the our off Pier Head) to operate; but - to me - that's the only change worthy of such intense Civil Engineering. (Although the loop should never have been removed in the first place).
    I remain highly suspicious as to where the surplus cash is going.
    The Project is in DESPERATE need of a full independent Audit.

      01. Actually, I have an apology to make. I realised later that I had my video settings on 720dpi for some weird reason. So please accept my apologies with respect to the focus issue. That one was entirely down to me.
      02.I had no context whatsoever for what is being done on the Isle of Wight. It would have been helpful to have known either via voiceover or captions what the overall project is, what the purpose of the project is, its scope and duration, that sort of thing. Then as you showed us the various parts of the system, it would have been good to know what the intended changes were. All I saw was something of which I knew little to nothing with no understanding of what I was looking at or where we were headed in terms of the changes being made.
      I could not engage with your video because there was no story - just images with no context.
      Stories / narratives are the strongest form of communication mankind has ever invented. Unless you are playing a music video or displaying abstract art or something similar, every video should have a storyline.
      A simple example: Trains Trains Trains has a channel where he shows you photographs of specific railway stations over time. Some of them are long demolished now. The point is, however, that he tells you enough (via captions) about the station that you can see its birth, life and death played out before you. Even though he is only showing us a series of photographs, he gives us a narrative which holds everything together.
      03. As for the music, this is a pet bugbear of mine. Your music choices may not be mine. In particular, any music which has heavy thumping beats makes it impossible to concentrate and absorb video content. The music dominates the senses. This, by the way, is a practice in which even profession TV companies indulge to the point that some documentaries become unwatchable.
      As a general rule, if you have an interesting story to tell, you do not need a music track. Let people absorb the content rather than be distracted by something which unnecessarily distracts them.
      If I were making a video and adding a music track, my music choices would be very, very different from yours - but I would annoy and alienate just as many people. Why? Because they did not come to the video for the music but for whatever unique content had attracted their interest.
      If you DO want to add music, think carefully. It should either be very neutral or it should thematically support your story. Something that is just thumping beats won't add anything but it may deter people.
      Again, Trains, Trains, Trains has a particular piece of music he plays. I happen to like it and think it DOES support his narrative. It is good mood music ... to my ears. I have no idea whether everyone feels like that.
      I suppose I am sort of saying no music often works best but if you must have musc, make it appropriate and avoid anything that is just an ear worm.

      Those situations cover a large amount of what people would want to use a drone to photograph. It only leaves open countryside. My feeling is that private gardens are a no-no for privacy, but public spaces like streets and parks are OK (people shouldn't have an expectation of privacy there). And railways ought to to be OK as long as you are above some minimum height for OHLE clearance etc. Airports are a different matter, apart from authorised fliers who get clearance between planes etc.
      But it's the standard problem: someone invents some new wonderful technology (drones, electric scooters, Segways) and the legislators go and spoil them by banning them in all the situations where people may want to use them (ie everywhere except your own private land). When I went on a cruise which called at La Corunna (Spain) we went on a Segway tour around the town. To begin with, while we became familiar with balance, regulating speed and stopping safely, we were kept to cycle tracks alongside foot pavements. By the end we were taken through quiet streets (some of them cobbled - that was "interesting" on a Segway!) into the town centre and main square. Pedestrians were used to them and looked out for them. We rode very slowly as we were passing people. A sensible mature attitude, unlike the UK attitude which is "No! Never! Not in a million years!"
