  • Final Feeding?! Tray is getting very full. Worms are doing well and all previous food has been demolished.
    Let’s see if we can’t get this system back up and running!

    The springtails are attracted to acidic foods. In yours its tomatoes in mine its fermented watermelon rind and foods that get sour. I just removed my ENC's for castings and found a lot of springtails. They won't be there soon as the castings dry so will they. That bin is also primary leaves which is more acidic than cardboard. My other bins don't have any.

      Catherine Fredericks I definitely think acidity plays a role. Thanks for your input!

    Nice video Emily. Excellent example on the liquid issues. // I noticed the drain cleaner you spotted works on hair, etc but won't work on food particles in the drain. Sewer gnats need moisture and a food supply. Any decaying organics are food for them. There's a homeopathic for that, but it won't "cut" hair. Cold water works but hot is much better. Add a couple tablespoons of baking soda to a cup or two of water and stir well. It helps to add a drop or two of Dawn dish soap. Pour it in the drain and follow up with 1/2 cup of vinegar. White distilled is okay and cheap. Pour in a little vinegar- when the "bubbling" slows down, add a little more. When it quits bubbling, the baking soda is used up. It's like dropping an alka-seltzer on steroids down the drain. Kinda' like homemade "Scrubbing Bubbles." The Dawn breaks up grease and the bubbles break food particles loose so you you can flush them down with warm water. It will also make the chrome ring on your drain inlet really shiny. It doesn't kill larvae that I know of, but it does take away their food supply. Completely safe for pipes and biodegradable.

    Oh that bin looks much better!!!! I even go as far as drying off the food scraps after draining the liquid off with paper towels because I know there is still a lot of liquid in it.

      Deplorable Dan absolutely! It’s looking good to me too. Ready to add that new tray soon!

    Hey Emily. On the top lip of my bin, I marked N/E/S/W like a compass, with a sharpie I then mark a W on my calendar when I feed them, and have a line on which direction/section I fed them, and work clockwise each week. Another option is get some of those cheap dry erase boards college kids hang on their door, velcro it to the outside of your bin, and use a dry erase marker/eraser to track your feedings per bin.

    Guess I'm lucky. Only bug problem I've had in my indoor bin is the red mites when the bin is too wet. I've found an easy to get rid of them though. I find they will congregate on the lid, so I place the lid upright on the edge of the bin and lean it against the wall. That way any worms that are there will move back into the bin, but the mites stay put. Then when the mites have dried out and died, I simply dump them in the toilet and flush them away. I have a multi-level Vermi-Hut, which is similar to the Worm Factory 360. However, I also have some outdoor bins and that is a different matter. Lots of other bugs in there, but I don't mind. Only ones I really hate are the fire ants. Here in northeast Texas, I have to have a water barrier around the legs of my outdoor bins or it's fire ant city. Happy vermicomposting.

      Kate R thanks for watching! Yeah the bugs are a pain, but usually manageable. This bin is slowly getting back to health.

    Spring tails work in symbiosis with compost worms so they are not too bad. Did you know that people actually sell spring tail cultures to newt/fish/frog hobbyists? They are not cheap. If your spring tails go out of control again, maybe you scoop them out and put them into little containers of moist wood chips and sell them online. Just a little suggestion 😊

    We worry sometimes about adding still frozen food in the bins, so far our feedings and bedding ratio have worked out well, but we'll watch for sure. Thank you! ~K

      Miles Of Worms I have fed huge bags of frozen food to my Urban Worm Bag. I just like to warn people Incase someone were to get upset if worms started climbing from the temperature swings or it flooded the systems.

      Grant McIntosh I am lazy and do minimal editing because of the sheer amount of filming I do. Therefore I just have to clarify in my videos. 😂

    How long do you let the trays "sit" before harvesting? I know the manual suggests 3-4 months, but my trays gets so sludgey.

    • @TheCrazyWormLady
      @TheCrazyWormLady  5 років тому +1

      Linda S. Completely depends. If it’s finished and I have time and space to harvest, I do. Sometimes my trays sit 3-6 months but ideally I don’t let them go so long. If your trays get sludgy, definitely focus on keeping your bedding levels up. It’s very easy to run this system too wet. Thanks for watching!

    I have noticed that my reds in the 360 want to be in the bottom where the drain is. Are you having this issue too? Got any suggestions?

    • @TheCrazyWormLady
      @TheCrazyWormLady  5 років тому +1

      Melinda Schneider they always like it in the bottom because moisture travels down. I get them down there as well. A combination of running the system drier may help. I have also heard some people put a small light in the base. That’s a bit extreme in my opinion though.

    Check out stratiolaelaps scimitus, (hypoaspis mites)... they will go HAM on those springtails and fungus gnats :) I think it's important to have a predator in your bins for these bad guys... This way when you use your castings in your garden you're not spreading springtails and gnats but spreading a voraceous hunter! They also will do an awesome job against thrips, root aphid, and spider mites.

    • @TheCrazyWormLady
      @TheCrazyWormLady  5 років тому +1

      Moosh LooLoo well in reality all worm bin pests (well most at least) are actually helpful and harmless to the garden. Once the castings are finished and slightly drier it’s hard to find any mites or springtails so I have gotten to the point where I just leave them be. Took me a long time to get here though.

    OK, I’m constantly looking for just the worm factory on how they did it. This is not the worm factory 360 that I have. It’s just called the worm factory.

    Your neem cake, is it the leaf or seed meal? I use neem oil on my Bonsai for bug control. It smells like garlic onion celery. Must be the same plant of origin.

    • @Boodieman72

      The bottom fills up with worms and castings because the holes in the layers are too big.

    • @TheCrazyWormLady
      @TheCrazyWormLady  5 років тому +1

      Boodieman72 ahh yes I have this problem as well. I clean out the bottom by hand at least once a month. I feel your pain. The totes are so simple and don’t require all the extra maintenance (just moisture control). I love them.

    • @Boodieman72
      @Boodieman72 5 років тому +1

      I clean them out when I harvest as well but its always full. The totes are way easier but when you are starting out you don't know any better. I think I have about 10-20 anc's in the tote and they already ate though what I put in there on Monday.

    • @TheCrazyWormLady
      @TheCrazyWormLady  5 років тому +1

      Boodieman72 it’s way more cost effective in my opinion. Nearly free compared to the multiple hundreds of dollars some commercial systems can be. Like you said, most of us didn’t realize this at first.
