    • @wlk2408
      @wlk2408 8 днів тому +3

      Not the same story. Mapimpi didn't have Pollard and Manie to compete with. Pollard a two times world cup winner and Manie also a world cup winner. Masuku is older than Manie. Unless Masuku is going to be the first or even second choice why play him? Masuku will be 31 and Pollard 33 by the 2027 world cup. Masuku will be 35 by 2031. Unless Masuku is better than Manie and Pollard there is no point in investing time and money in him. Sacha 22 and Hendrikse 23 can both play more positions and they can definitely be able to play the next two maybe three world cups. So even if they are not first or second choice right now they can play in 2031 and 2035, something Masuku is going to struggle to do.

      @kaalvoet Are you comparing Masuku to a once in a generational player that started playing for Ireland at 19 I think? Surely not. Yeah he's good to try out if he's young or the best. He's neither. He needs atleast one more season of good form like anyone else. In fact he needs less than anyone else but half a season worth of bowl action (not the cup) doth not an innings make. He's got bmt. It's a shame he's only sprung on so late. If we just had a morne steyn I'd agree. But can we agree Masuku hasn't slotted a 52m penalty in any competition so he's realistically 4th behind Sasha. We only took one, then two flyhalves to the last WC. Let's get through Ireland and All Blacks maybe he can be let loose on end of year tours.

      Why waste time blooding a new player who will be old is a valid point. Its a waste of resources, end of story, especially with the talent competing against him and their age and real potential for the future which, unfortunately for Masuku, he is not, he has one WC in him, to focus and commit to him is a waste as will then need to find a new FH against afternoon, no continuity, its just bad planning and planning was always Swys' own downfall too, so no surprises he is entirely shortsighted like this here.

      Yes one of them can kiss their Springbok dreams goodbye. I can't think of a single team in history who played with two international flyhalfs from the same country in their team. One of them will play the big pressure games and the other will be the backup player. Look what happened to Sacha at the Stormers. In two years he hasn't started a single game at flyhalf for the Stormers. Dobson is killing his career. The only reason Sacha made the Springbok team is because he had success with the Junior Springboks as captain and goalkicker. The fact that he has the best goalkicking success rate in South Africa also helped him. Williams also passed Hendrikse at scrumhalf. Never clever for two international players to play for the same team. One will always play above the other. These guys are stupid for doing it. Very bad career move.

      That's actually very enviable. If I remember right back around WC 07 they said it worked because the 9 and 10 were completely different. Fourie Du Perez for his tactical kicking and sniping breaks, James for his tackling and cross field kicks. So Hendrikse is known for his tackling robust defense like Butch he will go well with Jaden the tactical kicker like Faf is to Pollard. And Grant Williams can be a good foil for the more tactical kicking Masuku. I may be talking out of my ass.

But I do feel it makes a mockery of what many players grind for years.. When you selected off one good season and not head and shoulders above the rest. The only reason you'd do that is to groom. Which is the arguement for Hendrikse. mngomezulu we'd all agree is a multi talent his many positions and age put him ahead. So to me though he has showed BMT, which is one of the most important things even Manie, a talented seasoned veteran now, can get wrong. But he needs one more season. I disagree with Matfield. Players such as Steyn and Deon Fourie had opportunities at Bok critical positions well into their mid-late 30s. Siya is the player we need at 10. He’s a hungrier Pollard that can support Manie. And saying he’s at a lower level for the Sharks when they compete against the best European teams is disingenuous. I’m glad Russie is coasting and not Victor

      I think the difference is, forwards vs backs and the bomb squad. You need two great forward packs per game (+Deon’s versatility in positions counted for him). We hardly ever get a flyhalf replacement. The age of forwards are also on average higher than backs.

Van der Merwe is 28, got his debut last week and was man of the match. Are you going to discard him now because he’s Masuku’s age and he’s also a back player? Masuku is a world class 10, turned the Sharks’ fortunes around and the Invested cup and URC are high level IMO. Transitioning from URC to Test rugby should be easy, it’s not like from Currie Cup to international.

    Hendrikse was dreadful for an hour. Give Masuku the same hour and then make a judgement. We're not saying pick him over anybody.
    Same thing with Sacha Mngomezulu, we've been crying for Dobson to simply give him time at the 10 jersey and then make a judgment.
    Rassie Erasmus doesn't want to admit that some of these "chosen one" academy players that they scouted out when those players were 12-16 years old aren't always gonna deliver the goods.
    You cannot start a player at 10 for the Boks when he can't even be 1st choice in that position in his club side.
    Aphelele Fassi didn't play Craven Week or SA Schools, so they chose him reluctantly and started saying he can't defend, meanwhile Willie is a revolving door 😂
    They make certain criterias for others and don't keep them for others.

    • @davesmith826
      @davesmith826 8 днів тому

      Willie is selected not for his defence but for his positional play. He reads the opposition lines from the back of the field and orders the backs and forwards into position. You don't see this on TV, because the ball is being played where Willie is not, but you will pick it up in a stadium. Everyone in the Boks set up know how important Willie is. The same is true for the Bulls. His performance against Leinster is the reason the Bulls beat them and his absence in the final is the reason the Warriors won.
      I agree with the rest of what you said. Libbok has had his chance - more than many - and failed. It's time for Masuku to be given a starting berth with Sacha being blooded for the no. 1 role. Sacha has the highest ceiling of them all but we won't know how good he is until he's starting for club and country. Dobson is either being very clever in not playing him (making him angry, forcing him to improve) or very foolish (backing a busted flush when he's got a full house on the bench). Time will tell.

Rassie hasn't written him off he said this week that he needs more time to integrate with the boks way of doing things which is fair Pollard is 30 so Siya being 31 in 4 years time doesn't mean anything. Look what happens when Pollard retires he has just had a kid married family life is he going to be there at 34-35 at WC time in 2027 we don't know 50/50, therefore you need 3 now and if 1 is injured you have the same as Faf, Cobus and Williams. Nor can you put any of the other contenders as they are either too young or untested at international level. Are we not looking for Manie's replacement? Manie has had plenty time to sort out his kicking, going as far back to the Sharks days and still cannot kick, so I doubt he will ever will be able to improve on hit and miss days.
    Goal kicking wins games and than God all the fools out there realised this during the RWC.
    We talking about test match rugby not club, If you want Manie playing, use him for games like Portugal. What we need is a real No.2 goal kicker and Sasha could possibly fill that role based on the last match, but we wont really know until he has played 10-15 tests. Hendrikse gets the inside edge because he is on the EDP system, but Masuku has come kicking at the door and at some point deserves a look at. Agree, Masuku didnt look so impressive against the Bulls, even missed a few kicks, the look on his face showed something too. ( You always look better behind a strong forward pack, its when you are on the back foot your true ablity is tested).It's still early, he needs to get to grips with Springbok culture, but he needs to be given a go at least on the end of year tour if not Portugal now that he has been called up. Personally I'd like to see him play more at the Sharks before he is given a cap. He is young enough for a RWC but still very raw. Is he blossoming late? Well, we need to find out dont we, but No.2 goal kicker should be what we are looking for and eventually a No.1 goal kicker as Pollard wont be around for ever.
    So are we really looking for a No.3 goal kicker? Surely not.

    And something Victor isn't admitting is that Siya probably IS the 2nd best flyhalf based on what we saw all season ... Manie is only there on last years reputation and the legacy of his performance in two matches ... the Twickenham warmup vs the All Blacks, and the RWC game against Scotland. This year Manie has been good one out of three matches ... same as he was at the RWC and the buildup to it through the Rugby Championship. One out of three isn't good enough for the Boks ... it puts the team under too much pressure, especially with missed kicks and points.

    View it from Rassie's perspective, because that's the only perspective that counts. Matfield is right. Rassie doesn't throw away guys he knows and trusts for the sake of an inform player from "outside" the system.
    Siya, who's only had half a good season, would have to overcome and outshine....Pollard (Siya doesn't have his experience, talent, big match temp) , Libbok (Siya doesn't have his attacking ability and Siya's goal kicking % is similar to Libbok's in URC), Sasha/Jordan (Siya doesn't have their youth and hasn't been in the system like they have and neither of them had bad URC campaigns. So realistically, Rassie is looking for a third choice 10 after Handre and Manie. Siya just isn't in the conversation after 1/2 a good season with the Sharks.
    Players like Louw and David Kriel and even van Wyk have been knocking on the door for years now with fantastic performances in the URC but why would Rassie abandon the likes of DDA, Jesse, Am, when they're so established with so much winning experience, unless age was a big factor.
    We may see age become a factor with Pollard, Am, Kolisi moving into the second and third year of this WC cycle, at which point the likes of Masuku would bump up the list with players like Sasha/Manie/Jordan still ahead of them in the pecking order.
