- Cut the Rope is yet another one of the most iconic mobile games of all time, right next to Plants vs Zombies and Angry Birds. But there are numerous aspects of it's story that are unique to the story of ZeptoLab. Today I'll be going through the history of the company to find out what series of decisions have led to the current state of this beloved series.

Honestly this seems like the most normal mobile game studio story so far.
No drama, no self destructive decisions, they just moved on to other things and are still doing well for themselves.
They didn't put all their eggs in a basket and then milked the franchise until it was too dry to sustain them. Good on them

That ending hits me tho. That's the cruel reality, sometimes you don't do anything wrong and try to stay loyal as much as you can to your community, don't try to abuse them by wanting to much profits, but still get outdated and forgotten one day. As a graphic & game designer plant, I feel bad for ZeptoLab

In fairness, ZeptoLab is still very successful imo I think that's partially because they have 3 titles that are all doing well. So I think it's a dub
So basically:
Rovio fell off because of terrible decisions
PopCap fell off because of increasing irrelevance mixed with bad(not terrible) decisions
Cut The Rope fell off because the audience simply grew up and moved on, but made OK decisions.

That alien looking creature in _Cut The Rope_ is absolutely adorable. His design looks very simple, yet expressive at the same time whenever he opens his mouth to feed him, chews the candy, or cries when you lose it, which what makes the puzzle game so appealing.

king of thieves is actually still a living game. my mother is very involved in its community and was even a volunteer moderator for zeptolab at some point and still plays the game as well as cats. both developed a die-hard fanbase but for some reason. king of thieves now has a meta of basically impossible to beat dungeon setups. and cats turned pretty competetive too

I remember my hardest base design in King of Thieves took about like a week to clear twice in a row. It was my pièce de résistance, as it were. I could pretty easily do one clear every 10 mins or so by the end, but getting that second clear immediately after was killer.
I remember playing that game like 6 years back. Even back then the strat is making impossible dungeons, and to steak their gems you had to decipher how the dungeon works, which at some point helps you better your own. It really hurts your eyes as you focus to find the pixel perfect jump spot to get 4 fuse gems. 10/10
i remember playing king of thieves when i was probably 14-15 cant remember, even though i'm 20 now i still remember having a ton of fun with it, i was in a guild and everything. i always wondered what became of it, this might actually push me into redownloading it and trying out those impossible dungeon set ups you mentioned

I’m glad the Cut the Rope franchise didn’t overstay its welcome like some other franchises like Angry Birds or Plants vs Zombies with the disaster the 3rd game’s going through right now. I actually didn’t even know Cut the Rope Magic or the remaster existed. Even though I’ve moved onto other games now, I’m definitely going to have to check those out at some point.
Magic is really good. It just has a really anoing mechanic where u essensially loose hearths when u win a level so you cant play it in one sitting.
Honestly, compared to other franchises that "died", Cut the Rope had a pretty good run, and ZeptoLabs' success with CATS still really kept the company heavily relevant. So for the most part, I think ZeptoLabs did a pretty good job compared to other mobile game companies

Zeptolabs games are like the thing you download after a long time when you wanna go on a nostalgia trip beat the game delete forget about for a couple years and download again repeat

Zeptolab is one of the only game companies that deserves a spot in the respected game companies list, it didn't make bad decisions and the devs still update their old games to make sure they can be player on the latest phones
Cats is kinda p2w, but only at the top level
Also a lot of arcades like dave n busters still have cut the rope games. So it's not totally dead
There’s actually two other om nom games that came out this year, Om Nom Jump, & Om Nom Bounce. I was surprised they weren’t in the list, but I guess they aren’t big/well known enough. I was kinda sad they didn’t appear in the video haha, since I helped on making these two.

I was so in love with this series as a kid; i even got an om nom plush at an arcade once, which i still have and is sitting on my bedside nightstand.

It still is at least on the first few games like the original, Experiments, Time Travel and the 2nd one, afterwards it went downhill and died after the 2nd game the entire franchise
it’s still fun but you just grow up…
Fun fact: For the people that are curious, Nibble Nom, Om Nom and Om Nelle’s kid, was found inside a box in front of their door, like with Om Nom’s origin. Apparently, it is probably not really counted as their kid, but as a member of their family since they all look the same.
There’s an om nom planet that houses all of om nom life, and om nom was sent on a special mission to help discover earth (alongside all of the other partners of om nom 2) but all got separated and om nom fell into the hands of humans. Most likely, it’s believed that the professor from expirements, Tested on om nom and then sent him out to get taken to his son (the boy in the first om nom season).
Now, after the first season, om nom gets teleported back to his own planet, except through different points in time. Insert wacky Shenanigans until the last episode of season 2, where om nom gets teleported back to what seems like the original universe, but is actually just modern day of the normal universe, in the modern day home of where om nom lives.
Now I’m not gonna go into the spider lore/fan theory , that’s for another time, but if you want to see it, I will gladly write 5 paragraphs in the comments for you to enjoy.

Watching this video really made me nostalgic. Not only did I play multiple cut the rope and Pudding monsters, my brother was a King of thieves enthiusiast and expert and also played Cats.
I really love how this video is set up it really covers everything while engaging the audience you really earned this sub

They actually once completely changed the original Cut the Rope on the 20th of july 2022 to no longer include boxes or a level by level system, rather, you would get random levels to fill a "candy jar", if you beated a level, you could actually unlock it inside of a level select, but since most levels were meant to be harder and harder there was no good learning curve, plus you could get repeated levels. Thankfully they decided to scrap that idea. I know this has nothing to do with the series falling to obscurity, but it was still something bad that they did.

I remember watching the first season of the animated series, I miss the boy (?) that adopted Om Nom, a finale where Om Nom comes back to his live action house to find the kid grown up would send my heart into orbit.

I find hilarious how Om Nom's character changed over the years. Initially he was just a puppy-esque creature (first TV-series), but after years he went from kinda kid (CtR2 series), then young adult meeting woman and then literally a father in most recent series
Yep, also it went from a real-life animation with the cartoony om Nom (s1), still keeping that but cartoony backgrounds (time travel one), the magic stories had om Nom getting candy, being abit more cartoony (removing the real life aspect), and then stories simple to that, then him being a father. I miss when it was kind of real, it had a nice charm
I totally forgot about omnom. I played it everyday when I was younger. 😭

Did you know that ZeptoLab partnered with Blockade Entertainment to create a feature film based on the games, titled “Om Nom: The Movie”?
It was originally set to be released in the year 2016, but it never came into fruition since its announcement back in June 2015.
However, If that movie did end up happening, its animation style should be heavily inspired after some films such as, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” or even “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run”!
That would've been great to see, shame it got cancelled, just like with PVZ as well, I do hope someday we get a movie on those two games an official one
its sad the only successful video game movie at that time was the angry birds movie since the sonic movie and the doggy doodoo Mario movie did not exist

Honestly, I’ve always liked these games. They’re fun for a quick few minutes when you’re either waiting to do something or on public transit. I really like the holiday one as you could beat that relatively quickly. I don’t really play the game that much these days (or really mobile gaming in general), but it’s a good nostalgia trip.

I was obsessed with this game and it's youtube channel as a kid. My sister still plays it and we both still have plushies of Om Nom (the alien).
I remember as a kid, playing cut the rope 2 and being so excited when I found the video feature. I watched their UA-cam videos through the app for hours and felt so excited because I thought I was discovering hidden lore or something. Never finished any of the games I just loved Om nom. Man, I adored the OmNom stories when I was little. I loved the Cut the Rope games as a kid so this video made me really nostalgic.
Good overall summary of the Cut the Rope series, but i’m surprised you didn’t mention the other console spinoffs, such as Cut the Rope: Triple Treat released for the Nintendo 3Ds, which although are small parts of the overall series, still contributed to the overall outcome and were more attempts to stay relevant.
Oh shit I wish I knew about the 3DS game. A mobile game’s jump to consoles is pretty important to see that it became so popular that it transcends being a game on the AppStore. It’s also on Steam too.

I had no idea this many people played this franchise. I always though I was one of the only ones I knew that played this puzzle game. Makes me happy to know that a LOT of people have played it, because it remains one of my favorite mobile games of all time.
Honestly this game is a really fun challenge. I always replay once every year out of pure memories and wanting another game to play.
Am I the only one who thinks the old 2-D art style looks way better? Maybe it's just my nostalgia.

Cut the Rope 2 did not originally have a subscription. In fact, none of the games did. Cut the Rope 2 was split into two versions. The one released on iOS was paid, while the version on Android was free with a stamina system, and strangely enough it had extra challenge levels that the iOS version did not.

i tried to play the game again recently and got an ad every two levels. the levels lasted about 30 seconds each, so the ads got frustrating pretty quick

If you think about it, maybe Cut the Rope dying isn’t so bad after all because at some point, Om Nom could’ve gotten diabetes without even knowing and slowly kill himself in the process.

Honestly ZeptoLabs’ CATS is definitely a really fun game for all ages alike. It’s got the strategy/mind game that adults like, and it’s got the FIGHTS that kids like. I’ve played it and “prestiged” 3 times and all I have to say that it gets.. boring. Ofc, all games suffer from this and the fact is, I’m gonna play it again soon.

There were no such multiplayer games and Online games just Cut the rope,Hill climb racing,subway surfers and temple run and all that fun offline games
