@Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone I think your little Vietnam Ficus looks so pretty now without that low side branch. Very unique and quaint. Lovely! Lisa
I must say, that dwarf schefflera is one of my favourites from your collection. I'd love to learn more about how to achieve a successful clump style tree
Citrus flowers always announce their presence when in bloom ! I can only equate that smell to some of my orchids when in flower. Awesome job Nigel as always !!
Woohoo! Lemon flowers! Is this the first time it's flowered? I'm thinking that coming from the cold basement to the warmer plant room helped trigger flowering
Nigel Sir,observing the colour of the flowers on your famous lemon tree,as far as to my knowledge,it doesn’t look like a Meyer lemon as the Meyer lemon flowers have that purplish shade on the tip of the flowers.I’m just mentioning it as I read in one of your comments that it could be a Meyer lemon tree.Maybe as it was grown from a seed it got hybridised.Anyways, hope it bears fruits so that we may know it’s variety.Really happy to see the flowers on this tree after so many years 👍
Try a cotton swab for pollination. Holds and transfers the pollen better. That way you can take from one flower and go to the other and vise versa. My lemon tree Dagmar, she would always flower in the winter. With her, the pollination did and did not take. The ones that started to grow, my dogs quickly found something to play with and knocked them off. Flowers are strong in fragrance though. Fingers crossed for yours.
Thanks Tom, I noticed that the one flower had a large pistil sticking out the center, the other flower did not, I think only the one flower will fruit. Hopefully!
congrats on your lemon flowers. flowering citrus is my 'someday' goal, and the reason i was interested in starting trees from seed in the first place. my grapefruit tree is only ~4.5 yrs old, so i probably have a long wait ahead of me yet. but it's nice to see that they can, indeed, flower in the great white north!
@@TheBonsaiZone i didnt know it was from the grocery store but hearing this really makes me want to try my luck on a grocery store tree because there can be some hidden gems!
I have a dwarf schefflera cutting I started sometime in 2019 that's basically a very leafy stick in a pot right now, and I'd like to encourage it to branch and hopefully look as nice as yours one day. From what I've heard it sounds like the best way to do that is to prune off all the leaves and also the top of the trunk, is that right? Is there a good time of year for that?
Hello Hylian, I find it best to let the tree grow wild for a few months and then cut it back to a stump, it will then grow lots of branches, pick your best ones and then just keep repeating the process. Gradually your tree will get taller with lots of branches over the years!
That Schefflera sure is something! Mine is still just a stick with leaves! :D LOL I should make in watch your videos so it knows what I want :) Hee hee..
I'm curious about the tree in your Vietnamese pot.. The trunk is HUGE in comparison to the pot, and it is also super short.. At this point do you plan to air mostly for expansion on the canopy is size, and width , not hight? The tree looks very good, but it's such a huge trunk for its size. I have done similar but they just look kinda like a trunk choked 4 year old tree that has been grown outside is the yard is why I ask.
That bonsai pot on stilts at the end of your video is awesome! I would love to include an illustration feature of it on my Bonsai Pot gallery ( instagram.com/thebonsaipot ). Can you share any history on it - where it came from or who it was made by?? Thanks and hope to hear back!!
Hello Teddy, I modeled the pot in 3D. It was based on a picture of a large Vietnamese cement pot. The pot is 3D printed from nGen plastic and I painted and weathered it to look like cement. Here is a video of the pot... ua-cam.com/video/SbgZWHceft0/v-deo.html
I love your vids but i stg please stop saying vigorous! Atleast shuffle through synonyms for it! every time you say vigor or Vigorous I loose a braincell, and now I am too dumbed down to work on my bonsai tonight lol
I like how you think out loud and explain why you clip here or there and whatever else you do
I'm just going to reply to this comment, what should I say? Maybe just thanks? Thanks Mark!

She is very proud of the tree, just look at her!
Indeed she is!
Love the updates...hope you get your lemons! All I could think while watching was a Canadian in winter dreaming of the tropics. Go figure!

Yes, the first time! I think the longer time outside combined with the cool period in the basement did it! So exciting!
found you/your acc some weeks after i buyed my first bonsai(5years ago) thanks Nigel for all the awesome lessons🙏🏻
Thanks for the tree recommendations. Starting my hardy tree path with yew cuttings and a found maple seedling. Fingers crossed.
Sounds great Alex!

Great updates Nigel, wow that scheffie grew a super-dense canopy, it's very easy to really envisage it in the jungle somewhere!
More great tree updates and work 👌
Thanks once again, it's so nice to have a roof over my head!!

Awesome! Thank you!
You have a nice bonsai I like your video
Cool update!
Thank you very much!!!
Cutting room floor I believe has a slightly new meaning here. It works though!
Yes, when I was a kid I used to edit 16mm film, the cutting room floor got quite full at times!
Beautiful flower...
Nice bonsais thanks for sharing.
Also, nice bonsai growing out of his head. Needs a little pruning. Jk
Do you have the very first video of the schefflera? the one you said that you cut it super super short like little stumps.
Is the Vietnamese Trunk part of a dream?
Schefflera bonsia made up of just one tree or multiple trees?
It is made up of multiple trees, over the many years they have fused together and can be treated as one tree now.
super
How old is the ficus microcarpa cutting?
Ở Việt Nam chúng tôi gọi là cây lùn lực!
You almost killed a worm at 20:47 :D
A lot of wildlife in that moss!
What do you do with the moss clippings?
I placed many of them underneath the pot to try and get a moss layer below also!
How cold is it up in your neck of the woods?
8 F tonight. We are having a warm winter so far, it's usually -4 F this time of year!
@@TheBonsaiZone, east coast United States. 19 degrees F.
That's cold for us!
Great show!
Thanks for sharing!
Are going to change the composition of the nutrients you are giving to the lemon tree, so it can flower better?
This is interesting because I can't say I've seen you trim immature growth before.
I think as the trees slowly get more refined, you have to manage the new growth more carefully. Many of my trees are still in the earlier stages!
Sooooo.....cut everything?
Cut carefully!
