Very well explained..It used to be very confusing topic but after watching this video I got clear idea of concept and applications. Thank you @revathi purushothaman it helped a lot in my sem xam preparation.
Thank you for the video. Would it be possible to use the same methods to test the alkalinity of aquarium water (with relatively low carbonate contents) ?
Sample volume = 10ml; Normality of acid = 0.1N Effluent pH 9.2 P end point - 9.3ml M end point - 74ml ( total alkalinity) Alkalinity values are Hydroxide alkalinity - 27,700 ppm Carbonates alkalinity - 64,700 ppm Bicarbonate alkalinity - 37,000 ppm Is this correct mam
Alkalinity comes from the minerals present in the water, which is obtained from various sources. You may watch 'Drinking water treatment video' The Alkalinity can be removed by Demineralisation, or any other water treatment methods. Watch those videos.
Methyl orange neutralizes complete hydroxide and complete carbonate only right?why to mention bicarbonate separately when it is already included in the complete neutralization of carbonate..... And also if bicarbonate is not included in the complete neutralization of carbonate then why do you take half carbonate in phenolphthalein alkalinity?
1) Go through the video carefully again. It means that whatever the combination, all of them will be neutralized with methyl orange indicator. 2) Neutralization with phenolphthalein includes complete hydroxide and first step of carbonate forming bicarbonate (slide 9), because bicarbonate neutralizes below pH 8.3, which will not be indicated by phenolphthalein. Hence half of carbonate.
It means you have not watched the the video properly.MO alkalinity is the total alkalinity. Ph A indicates the neutralisation of hydroxide and half of carbonate only
Bcz the first two neutralization reaction occur in ph range of 8 to 10 and phenolphthalein changes color in the corresponding ph range, below this range phenolphthalein will be colorless and we cannot see the visibility of bicarbonate ions when their end point occurs at ph of 4 to 5
Methyl orange will give only total alkalinity. If you want calculate alkalinity due to individual ions, we need to use both phenolphthalein and methyl orange. Go through the video carefully. It is explained clearly.
@@RevathiPurushothaman thank you mam. Can we also calculate bicarbonate as bicarbonate (formula) if we have to calculate bicarbonate only and not bicarbonate alkalinity....
No, you can continue the titration from phenolphthalein end point. Even if you fill the burette, you will get the same value. We need not waste the solution.
Methyl orange neutralises all the ionic species, but phenolphthalein neutralises only hydroxide and 1/2 carbonate. If you add methyl orange first, you cannot determine the individual concentration,

What is the difference between Ph alkalinity and mo alkalinity mam
It means you have not watched the the video properly.MO alkalinity is the total alkalinity. Ph A indicates the neutralisation of hydroxide and half of carbonate only
Mam, why do we need two indicators in this experiment
Check the slides showing the pH range of the indicators. You will understand.
Bcz the first two neutralization reaction occur in ph range of 8 to 10 and phenolphthalein changes color in the corresponding ph range, below this range phenolphthalein will be colorless and we cannot see the visibility of bicarbonate ions when their end point occurs at ph of 4 to 5
Right mam?
the bases are neutralized and a neutral water is formed then
Why is the end point 4.3 instead of 7?
The pH at end point will not be 4.3. It will be slightly acidic, because a drop of acid will be added more after neutralisation.
this helped me a lot .
Thank you very much.
Can u provide this pdf? Btw very good explanation mam ty
Thank you.
Very good explanation
Thank you
how will the equation change when we take strength of acid as Molarity?
Instead of equivalent weight of calcium carbonate, molecular weight should be used.
Can I use HCl in place of H2SO4
Can use.
Mam why we don't use only methyl orange
Methyl orange will give only total alkalinity. If you want calculate alkalinity due to individual ions, we need to use both phenolphthalein and methyl orange. Go through the video carefully. It is explained clearly.
@@RevathiPurushothaman thank you mam
Mam how can we calculate/express bicarbonate and carbonate. We have to add equivalent weight of carbonate and bicarbonate in the formula ?
No. We are calculating in terms of CaCO3. So we are multiplying with its equivalent weight 50. The formula we have used.
@@RevathiPurushothaman thank you mam. Can we also calculate bicarbonate as bicarbonate (formula) if we have to calculate bicarbonate only and not bicarbonate alkalinity....

determination of acidity is titration with base is it correct ?
Yes you are correct.

Mam we should refill the burrete again during methyl orange titration
No, you can continue the titration from phenolphthalein end point. Even if you fill the burette, you will get the same value. We need not waste the solution.
What is theall precautions of this experiment
Should be careful in identifying reddish orange or pink colour at the methyl orange end point.
If pH of water sample is below 8.3
Than we can start from methil orange indicator.
Hello Mam, how do you calculate if the condition is P=1/2M...for carbonate ions?
Good day maam how do we compute normality of H2SO4?
Pls show to me practical of water of Alkinity
sure.
Plz increase the voice quality...
Already improved in next videos
mam what would happen if we do it with methyl orange with no phenolphthalein??wouldn't it be same?
Without phenolphthalein, only methyl orange will give the total alkalinity. We cannot find the individual alkalinity
individual alkalinity as in of individual compound as OH-,CO32-,HCO3-?
Yes.
thanks mam
Most welcome.
Thank you so much mam
It's my pleasure
It's a good presentation however I feel certain places, it's just stated rather than explaining why you are making that statement.
Thanks

Madam, alkanity processor vendum 🙏
wonderful

Why phenpthalline is added first in the water sample why methyl orange is not
Methyl orange neutralises all the ionic species, but phenolphthalein neutralises only hydroxide and 1/2 carbonate. If you add methyl orange first, you cannot determine the individual concentration,
Good
Thanks
