Breaks my heart. I have McCoys on my moms side of the family. While I know both families suffered during the feud, it's hard to not feel like the McCoys specifically went through quite a lot of hardship. More of them certainly were murdered during the actual feud itself. I frequently go hiking/camping out in this area of KY, as well as the Red River Gorge/Daniel Boone SP, and they're some of the most beautiful natural spots ever. But it's true, knowing what happened here does kind of take away some of the beauty, knowing that innocent kids had to sleep overnight with their dead relatives nearby. Very sad.

Mountain folks are good God fearing people that stick together and mind our own business until someone crosses the line. It's hard to believe the hate that the families showed. But it also happened in a lot of families. And also families were separated when some went to war or moved away. I found Gen hallock's brother that fought along side his brother in Monterey California buried there no one knew where he died.if one knew and they never documented it then it was lost. This was truly a sad, senseless action. This was, like Leo said, was just one family trying to murder the other. What a shame that, like so many other stories in history, so much of the facts are lost to time. So many were touched and destroyed in this fued. Another great video/Wanted to stop by and tell you how much I love your channel ,and I've watched every single one of your videos since I discovered it.I always wished someone would do videos like your doin but nobody much has done it right until y'all.I guess it would have to be people you wouldn't mind trapesin around in the briars and weeds with and I'd be happy to do that with either one of you nice folks/A while back you asked about suggestions and such and I got one.My family name is Clendenin,and there's alot of Wv history there in the southern part of the state.For some reason there hasn't been alot of talk about them which is odd considering they were instrumental in the settling of Wv,founding of Charleston,and the Point Pleasant history,I even have a relative that was a general that presided over the Lincoln assassination trial.His name was George Ramsey Clendenin.There's also Archibald Clendenin who's entire family was killed by Shawnee indians.I think there's a marker there I believe around Charleston/Anyways again I love yer channel,and keep doin what yer doin.It would mean alot to me if you ever run across any of the Clendenin graves,and I'll keep watchin.Oh,when I was a kid my grandma used to call me Leo
I visited the location of the McCoys home several years ago with my wife and daugther. It is a stunningly beautiful piece of property. So sad to realize the absolute terror that took place there.

Absolutely heartbreaking, any way you look at it. I live in Texas but my mom's family is in Floyd county KY and I have family ALL over that part of Kentucky. I have heard my uncles talk about it, they're 81 now. The only thing that I have EVER heard was it was a horrible, violent thing and now, they've made every thing and every where a tourist destination. If you understand history, real history and have any idea about the families at that time, in that area, there's absolutely no way to see it as anything else
Leo , Loved what y'all put together on that Horrible night in our past , I can still hear my grandma telling me that story , like I've told ya in the past she was from the Hattfeild side and told us stories about sitting on Devil Ance lap and around his table eating with other family members when she was a little girl , she's been gone since 1989 died at 84yrs old , so like you and everyone else related to either of the families they heard about that feud constantly she said when everyone was together the men involved and still living bragged about what they did and took it as a right of passage . It doesn't matter what family your from its was absolutely horrible but I get it to some extent an eye for an eye is how they lived back then , I can't say I'd do things any different if someone hurt or killed one of my family members but I sure wouldn't do it over it over a hog but honestly I don't believe that's the truth from what I heard that it all boiled down to timber/land rights but I cant prove that it's just what we we're told growing up by my grandma , the Good Lord is the only one that knows the truth and the rest is rumor based . It took a minute on my large screen to figure it out, but I've read enough death certificates from that era and area (from which my Grandmother's family, the Hansfords, came, that I can recognize that particular genre of handwriting.
I agree that ground is tainted with the blood & horror of that night. What tragedies were born of the feud. It seems that Randall payed a heavy price 5 dead children & a dead granddaughter. Seems like devil anse did not pay as heavy a price. It is awful that the 2 innocent children of that night rest in unmarked graves. Excellent research that brought us such thought a thought provoking video. I wonder if Melvin is listed as undertaker because he buried his own daughter. I can't even begin to imagine the nightmare these people lived through
I am from Northeast Kentucky. I've been to Pikeville and other places that was in the feud. Blackberry creak. Where the McCoy place was. The Paw Paw trees. My grandmother made sure that is kids walked where her family walked and died. She was proud to be kin to the McCoy's. And she often cried about what happened to the kids and Randalls wife. She told us that Randall lost more than anyone else in that feud. And the Hatfields got away with it all. Except for Cotton Top. Who I think didn't kill anyone. Randall was a good man before all this started God fearing man. At the end of his life he was an alcoholic and ended up burning to death. While Devil Ans got saved and died in his bed. Really nobody paid for killing all of those kids. They killed an innocent man to end it. The Hatfields were murders and cowards in my book. But I do wish both family are finally at piece. The real stories will never be known. I'm proud to be a Hillbilly and proud to be a distant kin to the McCoy's.

I'm going to try to play The devil's advocate, one thing many of the gravesites did not have a tombstone mainly because there was not a monuments manufacturer probably in that area meaning even someone who could chisel out something on a sandstone, do you think if these events occurred say in the 1960s and 1970s do you think they still won't be looked up on with the same fanfare? Do you think that possibly be museums and tour sites dedicated to them? Either way the story of these two families is a very cautionary tale even for our generation, same as in my family relative the Jenny Johnson family in Northern Alabama, sadly there is a thin line between reality which both of these families had to suffer through, and through making them folklore Legends, a cautionary tale for all generations❤
In a way, it didn't. Devil Anse and many others had to carry weapons and watch over their shoulders for the rest of their lives. Some had bounties on them until they died. I just shot video of Devil Anses "knuckle buster pocket gun" at a local museum yesterday, as a matter of fact. Thank you for watching and commenting, btw... :-)
My Grandmother America Overbey had a pan shot out of her had on the porch,, CRAZY!!! They were in London Kentucky on born on 1931... Don't know if it was a Hatfield or McCoy...
There are many alive today who could use the lesson. How these things can get out of hand very quick and boil over to the point of treating people like animals to slaughter. Leading to devestation for all involved. No real winners in this. McCoy lost a bit more in blood due to results of election day and new years. But many Hatfields sat out their days behind bars after living on the run. And of course Anse lost his brother. Then poor Cottontop getting hanged like a sacrifice to end the feud. Curious how so many died young..before their time. But Anse and Randall live into their 80s.
What was the name of the movie they made about the Hatfields and McCoys? I remember Bill Paxton. played in the movie, but I can’t remember the name of it.
Regardless of who started the feud and who or even what kept it going, Randall McCoy and his family didn't deserve what the Hatfields did to them that night. Interesting that Melvin McCoy stated that it was Johnse Hatfield is the one who beat Sally McCoy nearly to death, when I have heard most sources seem to claim it was Jim Vance who did it.
You have to keep in mind that it was almost a hundred years before and there is no telling what that area looked like. You know all that small brush there now wasn't there then. There probably was other brush but it's hard to try imagining it for me when it happened 130 to 140 years ago
Devil Anse would've been considered land rich but cash poor as they tend to say. He had something like well over 7 or 8 thousand acres to his name at one point and made his money in the lumber industry as he owned a sawmill. Randall McCoy, on the other hand, seemed to be of much more modest means. Randall would probably be considered either middle or lower middle class today especially by Eastern Kentucky standards.
A branch is a stream that runs through a small valley (a holler). Water runs off the hills in small streams and empties into the branch, which then empties into a larger stream like a creek or river. In Appalachia, a road may follow the path of the branch (and sometimes runs through it) from the mouth of a holler (where the branch empties into the larger stream) to close to the head of the holler (near the origin of the branch).

Sad thing about it is they use footage from the miniseries that was filmed in Europe, when it could’ve been filmed in Appalachia.

I'm going to try to play The devil's advocate, one thing many of the gravesites did not have a tombstone mainly because there was not a monuments manufacturer probably in that area meaning even someone who could chisel out something on a sandstone, do you think if these events occurred say in the 1960s and 1970s do you think they still won't be looked up on with the same fanfare? Do you think that possibly be museums and tour sites dedicated to them? Either way the story of these two families is a very cautionary tale even for our generation, same as in my family relative the Jenny Johnson family in Northern Alabama, sadly there is a thin line between reality which both of these families had to suffer through, and through making them folklore Legends, a cautionary tale for all generations❤

In a way, it didn't. Devil Anse and many others had to carry weapons and watch over their shoulders for the rest of their lives. Some had bounties on them until they died. I just shot video of Devil Anses "knuckle buster pocket gun" at a local museum yesterday, as a matter of fact. Thank you for watching and commenting, btw... :-)
My Grandmother America Overbey had a pan shot out of her had on the porch,, CRAZY!!! They were in London Kentucky on born on 1931... Don't know if it was a Hatfield or McCoy...
There are many alive today who could use the lesson. How these things can get out of hand very quick and boil over to the point of treating people like animals to slaughter. Leading to devestation for all involved. No real winners in this. McCoy lost a bit more in blood due to results of election day and new years. But many Hatfields sat out their days behind bars after living on the run. And of course Anse lost his brother. Then poor Cottontop getting hanged like a sacrifice to end the feud. Curious how so many died young..before their time. But Anse and Randall live into their 80s.

Very sad story about the whole thing, but back then things were different. My heart is sad for all the blood shed.
Regardless of who started the feud and who or even what kept it going, Randall McCoy and his family didn't deserve what the Hatfields did to them that night.
Interesting that Melvin McCoy stated that it was Johnse Hatfield is the one who beat Sally McCoy nearly to death, when I have heard most sources seem to claim it was Jim Vance who did it.
Not one of these people had common sense to avoid this. Sad! 😢

You have to keep in mind that it was almost a hundred years before and there is no telling what that area looked like. You know all that small brush there now wasn't there then. There probably was other brush but it's hard to try imagining it for me when it happened 130 to 140 years ago

Devil Anse would've been considered land rich but cash poor as they tend to say. He had something like well over 7 or 8 thousand acres to his name at one point and made his money in the lumber industry as he owned a sawmill. Randall McCoy, on the other hand, seemed to be of much more modest means. Randall would probably be considered either middle or lower middle class today especially by Eastern Kentucky standards.
