Gary Richrath was a BEAST on guitar. Criminally underrated.
i agree. and here's one of his best beast modes: ua-cam.com/video/HR8CnXn8LY0/v-deo.html
💯% agreed
spot on, the tastiest licks in rock
His sound has Gibson written all over it! A rough and edgy feel which I refer to as the "corn cob" sound.
@@Ibanezed210 great description! I absolutely love his sound
Gary Ritchrath was one of the most underappreciated guitarists of his time, Nothing to say except Phenomenal Talent
Well, next to Zappa, most underrated.
I had 3 or 4 friends always turning up the volume on REO Speedwagon. I saw it as a challenge to my bands, but REO is top talent entirely. And yes their keys, guitars and vocals second to few. Very very few.
Time for an REO history lesson. They were formed in 1967 at the University of Illinois in Champaign. The keyboard player with the wicked organ solo, Neal Doughty, was one of the founding members who came up with the name in his history of transportation class. The original REO Speedwagon was a truck from the early 1900's that was one of the first heavy duty trucks with speed and power mostly used as a fire truck. The hellish guitar solo was played by the great late Gary Richrath. The drum tracks were laid down by another original member Alan Gratzer. The lead singer who is still with the band is Kevin Cronin the voice behind all the power ballad hits from the 80's like Keep On Lovin You and Can't Fight This Feelin both number one hits. This song was from 1978 album called You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna FIsh.. The harder rock songs were from the 70's and include must listens such as Golden Country, Keep Pushin, Riding The Strom Out(live version) Time For Me To Fly, Back On The Road Again (Sung by the bass player Bruce Hall). Their biggest hits were from the 80's and were more pop. The biggest album was Hi Infidelity from 1981(album of the year) with 4 top 40 hits including Keep On Lovin You, and the fantastic Take It On The Run (#5). Great all American Rock band still on the road playing to sold out venues all over the country. Most of their songs are about feeling better and fighting through the tough times in life and love. Start down the REO rabbit hole and enjoy the ride.
Excellent EXCELLENT post, thank you. Kevin Cronin has serious pipes I do forget about him, errantly. I remember now thank you, what happened. REO Speedwagon went soft, going for the Top 40 AM radio songs fame. That is really what happened and it was most likely the agents and producers meddling. But I suppose with a beautiful voice you want to strip the instruments back, highlight his singing. It's understandable completely, but probably took REO Speedwagon out of a lot of rock listeners off their mix tapes.
……..well said !! I got to see them in late 70’s and again last summer ❤️🔥🎸
Close but not quite. Kevin Cronin is not the original singer, that was Terry Luttrell, later of Starcastle. (Well, technically the original, original singer was Joe Matt, but he left long before they got a record deal.) It had taken four years to get a deal, and when the debut album stiffed, Luttrell walked away.
(Footage of Luttrell leading the band can be found on UA-cam. It's marked 1971, "The Session".)
Gary Richrath drew the short straw in looking for a new singer. (Gary had also done some singing, but didn't want the whole job.). He checked out an ad for a "Musicians Referral Service", which turned out to be an enterprising young folk singer, Kevin Cronin, trying to refer himself into a job. Gary admired Kevin's chutzpah, and besides he was tired of searching.
So Kevin did the vocals on the 2nd album, "T.W.O." and they did a tour and started working on a third album. However, the 2nd album (while it is great) hadn't sold either, and when Kevin started missing rehearsals and getting into arguments with the others in the studio, he was out of there, and they hired Mike Murphy instead.
Mike got along fine with everyone and his "Southern Rock" voice seemed good for the marketplace. But while the band enjoyed making three albums with Mike, they STILL weren't selling, and since the band was coming to the end of their 6-album deal (the industry standard), the record company was in a jam. REO had built a reputation as a top live act and they could sell tickets, but not so much with selling the music itself.
The label wanted to bring back Kevin, thinking that the 2nd album had been the best so far. (Correct.). The band was…less enthusiastic. Gary was really interested in hiring Greg X. Volz, but Greg had decided he was too committed a Christian to join a secular band and passed. (Greg later became the singer for the popular Christian group, Petra.). So, the band did agree to bring Kevin back, after all.
(Kevin had done a few solo gigs, and written some songs. "The Ballad of the Illinois Opera" which found its way onto a REO record decades later, was one.)
Detailed agreements were drawn up. Gary and Kevin would split the songwriting and the lead vocals equally. (Gary wasn't too thrilled but decided to give it a try.). The 6th album, entitled "R.E.O." wasn't a big smash either, but the company believed in the band enough to give them a new deal. After the band did an EXCELLENT double live album, bassist Greg Philbin started wondering why they couldn't just credit the songs to the whole band, as they'd done on the first album. (Luttrell was still making money from songs such as "Lay Me Down" and "157 Riverside Avenue" which had been on the debut and were now placed on the live album, 5 years after Luttrell.had quit.).
Of course Kevin wasn't about to give away rights to HIS songs to people who had already fired him once before (and Gary wasn't thrilled about it either, especially after what a hassle the new contracts had been), so a simpler solution was reached; Philbin was out of the band and the new bassist was Bruce Hall, a California guy they already knew, as he had co-written the title track to the 4th album "Lost in a Dream" with Mike Murphy. (Pretty good song, too.)
And that's how the band you just heard came to be. Drummer Alan Gratzer took retirement in 1987 and Kevin fired Gary two years later (Revenge!), but since then they've been completely stable. Bruce Hall has been with them for 45 years, which isn't bad for a fill-in gig.
Just curious-have you ever seen REO live in concert? I've seen them live over 50 times from 78 to 2020 so curious of your impressions of seeing them live in concert??
@@Davelakful I've seen them at least 20 times since 1984 including 3 times in 5 days in 1996. I've always enjoyed the live concerts except for the crowds who most of the time are distractions because most of the people (especially outdoor events) are there to drink and talk during the songs. So i've soured over the years from attending their concerts. First as I said too many distractions and too expensive and no diversity in their play set anymore. Plus they don't come to my area too much anymore. This state has sadly become home for ignorant redneck hillbillies and their stupid country "music" I would prefer to watch a video of their concerts. I wish they would make a new one and play all the old songs before Hi Infidelity.
Not only do you two gents know music you don't interrupt it every few minutes I appreciate your taste and your knowledge
Great band. Saw them live a few times in the late 70's early 80's. RIP Gary!🎸
Lots of good songs. Riding the Storm Out ( live) Time for me to fly. Too many to mention.
From Champaign Illinois!
I'm from Illinois. They used to play at the bars in Champaign, location of U of I. Bars were Chances R and The Red Lion.
“Golden Country” live. Lyrics still relevant today. Killer guitar and organ from this band
top 10 in my favorite guitar songs of all time. 🎸🎸🎸
Yes! Excellent song!
You guys described this song perfectly. It’s a rocking feel good song. I never get tired of hearing this one.
Thank you kindly for this reaction. Y'all must see the official music video to this. You will appreciate the song so much more, watching them do their thing on stage.
To answer your question, they're from Illinois.
Amen
Agreed the live version is unsurpassed excellence! Rip Great Gary a true guitar monster!!!
@@petepotaczek5844 I love how the live video shows Gary absolutely in his happy place
@@wdrauch I know right! Such a shame how it all ended for Gary.
@@wdrauch
I completely concur, I dig it when Gary kisses the pick as it transitions from Neal Doughty's organ solo over to his solo.
YOU GUYS ARE BY FAR THE BEST CHANNEL OUT THERE! YOU ARE BOTH SO MUSICALLY CONNECTED INTO NO MATTER WHAT GENRE YOU PLAY! LOVE WATCHING Y'ALL! IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE, AND WANT TO HEAR A GREAT TRACK, PLAY "TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE" BY THE ROLLING STONES. AMAZING GUITAR SOLO BY MICK TAYLOR. THANKS AGAIN GUYS! BY THE WAY, THE LEAD SINGER OF REO IS KEVIN CRONIN, AND THEY ARE FROM CHAMPAIGN, IL.
REO is an unrated band with a lot of great songs. You might want to consider reviewing: Time for Me to Fly, Take it on the Run, Tough Guys, Keep on Loving You, Ridin' the Storm Out, Don't Let Him Go, and Can't Fight This Feeling
They were magnificent in concert back in the day. This is such a great song. Thanks for the throw back to my generation.
Yes they were!!!! boy those were the days!!
I can attest to the live show being great, saw them at the Academy Of Music on 14th street in NYC early 1970s
REO was a good pop rock band.... "Riddin The Storm Out", "Roll With The Changes", "Don't Let Him Go" and
"157 Riverside Ave" are my faves...
They were a great band way before they went pop.
@@michaelherbert1395 I only know REO from what i got on the radio... Hard rock was more to my liking at that time.
You might be thinking of "take it on the run" re sounding familiar. That's a great track as well. Live if you want to hear and see Gary Richrath shredding harder than studio. One of the greats no longer with us.
Still love you guys. Not just knowledge but love of music. I listened to this in high school, and there were a lot of songs like this, positive, maybe even philosophical, groups like Kansas, and especially Earth Wind and Fire (And even John Denver.) Listening to them now though, having been steeped in inrony laden, hyper-critical, internet culture, I can't help but feel that young folks, and even old ones like myself, would consider this kind of music, to a degree, to be corny.
But then I give my head a shake and think how sad that is. Looking back, with all the social ills, and the Vietnam war still going, and inflation, and messed up race relations, many of the songs back then had an admirable kind of innocence that fought the cynicism of the times.
And why the hell not? The problem isn't these songs, it is today's ever so cool, so over it, so ironic popular culture. These songs are our natural state. Hopeful, innocent, sharing love and dreams and brotherhood. So if I ever get tempted to roll my eyes at the innocence of the times, I remind myself that in some ways it is what we all need, and shouldn't be lost.
That is why I liked your reaction. You guys seem like you have probably seen it all, and yet still you hang on to the innocence that ca respond to a song like this. You are on the right track. Thanks for the reactions.
Thank you!! I agree with all of this.
ALL-TIME CLASSIC. Two guitar solos plus a bonus organ solo
You should do Golden Country by REO. Great song.
Take me back in time fellas. Great song. As always fellas great reaction. Much appreciated 🙏 ❤
Oh and The Hammond Organ!!+
If you get the "holy ghost"....GET the holy ghost!😅
Nice y'all!!
Oh...these dudes are originally from Champaign Illinois.
Great banger to get your first introduction
I really like their early stuff like Keep Pushin' (LIVE) or Riding the Storm out (both live and Studio)...but by this time, kinda so so...After this they fell pray to the EVIL sappy Rock ballads haha... 🤧
I saw them for the first time in 1972 in Champaign Illinois when they were in College at U of I. I was 12. Lol!
they came out of Univ. of Illinois in late sixties and played at venues everywhere...Illinois State and U of Illinois student union dances.., dorms frats . Dance clubs ".Chances R" " Red Lion" ...they were huge regionally and on campus before they finally went national. and sold over forty million albums.. saw them live dozens of times when I was in college and grad school..db
Kevin Cronin is the lead vocalist and his voice is extremely powerful and passionate. To fully appreciate this band, you have to see them live. They are an American gem and deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. Glad you enjoyed this small sample of their 50 year career.
If you really want to know how good Gary Richraft is go to u tube Gary Richraft flying turkey trot live REO Speed wagon guitar solo best ever
One of my all time ever favorite album names! Great tunes too, this is all killer, no filler! I'm lucky to say I saw them several times live before Gary passed away, RIP! This album also has one of my all time favorite instrumentals which I'd love to see you guys do a short review of (The Unidentified Flying Tuna Trot).
Check out : Riding The Storm Out" live from my hometown Denver. Great harmonies, and the inimitable Gary Richrath on lead guitar. RIP. The voice is likely form one of many hits like "I Cant Fight This Feeling Any More".
Love the early REO!! Being a Midwesterner they wrote and played the songs that we lived!
I met Gary after his days with REO and he was a very kind and humble man. RIP Gary, you were one of the greatest and most underrated guitarist of our time!!
Another great Reaction guys!!👏👏
Back on the Road Again.. killer tune.... live or studio...
OFF OF ( YOU CAN TUNE A PIANO BUT YOU CAN'T TUNA FISH ) HAHAHA 😊 THEY HAD SEVERAL BANGERRRRRS YOU GUYS 💯 : TIME FOR ME TO FLY, TAKE IT ON THE RUN, DON'T LET IT GO THERE YA GO! 😊JUST ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE GREAT AWESOME 70'S POWER SINGERS ( KEVIN CRONIN )
Yeah, there’s more than a little gospel in this tune (musically, not so much lyrically). They’re an American band.
They ended their show two days ago 6/17/23 with “Roll with the changes”! The audience was like a church choir moving to the music! ua-cam.com/video/CGW3Cy9xJ5I/v-deo.html
My favorite song from when i was a kid my parents would always play their music
Their best work is "Golden Country" Live
I always want to hear Time For Me To Fly directly after RWTC. I first heard this when I was 15 and I still turn the radio all the way up when it comes on.
You need to hear "Golden Country" their best song IMO
REO hails from Illinois! AND OMG..listen to their song GOLDEN COUNTRY..ITS A JAM!!
Another party starter baby!
Great song, great choice!
Greatly under appreciated band.
One of the most kick ass fun tunes from that time I always loved it You cant help but move to it
Love the clap move, La!
Love this song, but my favorite REO is Golden Country from Live: You Get What You Play For.
YEAH THE WHOLE ALBUM IS FEEL GOOD! 😊
You guys gotta do the live version of 157 Riverside Avenue. Its a five star throw down
I had never heard them. I found 157 Riverside Ave album (1973) in a pawn shop. I bought it and was a fan ever since! Golden County is another one worth reacting to.
Absolutely, the live version is the best!
Amazing song! And I really enjoyed your reaction
Thanks for this one of my top 5 of all time! thumbs up again!
Great band, as with most, the earlier the better. I think out of Illinois. My best friend in high school’s favorite, we saw them all over the Northeast, partied with them a time or two. My favorite song by them, and my favorite part is Gary Richrath the guitar players little fills snd the solos. He is a seriously underrated shredder from that era.
Another big fan of Guitarist Gary Richrath
My fav by them. So good in concert. And for driving way too fast on the highway.
Great Band... Great reaction......
REO Speedwagon If you want to hear early REO then this is the tune Golden Country - (Live Version) ua-cam.com/video/HR8CnXn8LY0/v-deo.html Studio Version - ua-cam.com/video/oPogukb8BGg/v-deo.html
Middle American rock and roll. Some boogie that's rhythmically extended beyond boogie. Some country that isn't country. Some Motown that isn't Motown. Some Little Richard/Jerry Lee Lewis keyboards. It's not heavy but it's big. Great recording.
For an extraordinary "taking us to church" experience, take a listen to the Rolling Stones "I've got the blues" from the studio, featured on "Sticky Fingers." It may be Billy Prestons finest hour as a soloist.
Just a great rock and roll band. Gary was a monster on guitar. "Riding the Storm Out" live should be your next one.
I think there are mid western United States band
I forgot how good they were. That's real arena rock. A concert full of people singing along to music like that always feels really good.
Love you guys song choices! Keep it up!!
This song is an anthem with a positive message, beautifully sung and an iconic riff. Very cool to see it getting recognized again.
"Takin' us to church !! "
Well Hallelujah , brothers !!
Their Live album "You Get What You Play For" is a masterpiece of live performance and production. The version of Golden Country is phenomenal.
Saw these guys at 1981 Day of Rock n Roll in the SuperDome. Top notch band.
RIP Gary.
REO had so many great songs. But this is definitely one of my favorite for sure. It just is so fun and I love how once they get the audience singing that keep on rolling part, which is what happened when I saw them live back in their Heyday, then he just starts riffing off of that in the most fun way. And it went on for quite a bit longer in the live show.
You guys gotta do Riden the storm out!
Saw them in concert in 1980 at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY for the Hi Infidelity tour. Was the first (or 2nd ) time they played "Keep On Lovin You" live right before it was released as a single. Just an awesome band and now I live 45 minutes from where they formed.
REO SPEEDWAGON:
"Time For Me To Fly"
"Ridin' The Storm Out" (must be live version)
"Keep The Fire Burning"
"The Key"
"Keep Pushin'"
"Dont Let Him Go"
"Tough Guys"
"I Wish You Were There"
"Back On The Road Again"
"Follow My Heart"
"The Letter"
157 Riverside Avenue classic rock with some scatting thrown in! Awesomeness......
You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish!
It’s a great cruising song.
Check out early REO when they rocked
Another great music reaction video. I'm just piling on here, "Golden Country" live is a must. Its message is still applicable today.
Your audio is awesome in my headphones. Some people do not get that. :)
Thank you sir!!
Overseas band? Well, they are from Champagne...Illinois. Sorry.
They are from Illinois. I love Kevin's voice. Saw them in a free concert in a park in Terre Haute, IN in '72...before they hit it big. They tore it up!
🥁🔥🎸💣 All their songs are hits, Check out “Golden Country” or “Riverside Avenue” by REO Speedwagon, what the hell throw in “Riding the storm out” also by REO! 🎸🥁🔥💣
Riding the storm out
This was one of my favorite songs for a minute. I love the change over from Neil on the piano/keyboard to Gary😇 guitar.
Too bad the "changes" they were talking about was their change in their overall product with "Hi Infidelity" It got them their well-deserved millions but was a drastic change to the dark side of HI. I bought the album the day it was released. Listened to it twice and sent it to my 12-year-old sister and said you're gonna love this. She didn't. She couldn't even believe it was REO.
THIS was the good stuff. It's a crime they're not in the R&R HOF
They're playing with STYX Sep 29, 2023 at The Sparks, NV Nugget. If anyone gets the chance before it's too late.
I love you guys! Just enjoying great music! From my era, we had fantastic bands!!!! It was alot of fun and I love seeing you enjoy it!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Saw REO Speedwagon in concert a few times. They could jam. I was always gravitating to Rush, Sabbath, Floyd, Zep... It was a tough time to make your mark with unique quality music, but thousands managed to do it. I never called REO one of my favorite bands, but damn they were good. Band like REO Speedwagon would be so popular now they'd take Donni Trump-Putin going to jail off the headlines. That's what needs to happen, musically. And otherwise. So we can get back to being happier. Happiness results in kindness among normal people.
Probably already answered but REO is from Champaign Illinois
Saw This As My First Concert In Chicago In 1971 For $2.00 At A Radio Promotion Gig. Great Band Great Time!!
"Riding The Storm Out" is probably the tune you guys have heard.
They're from Champaign, Illinois.
My first concert ever was these guys at the Meadowlands in New Jersey in 1982. I was 10 and my brother was a huge fan of REO. It was my first contact high as well. My mother, brother, and I drove home high as fuck.
Wow! You started with, in my opinion, REO's best and most meaningful song ever! I mean, you said you almost caught the Holy Ghost with it! Where do you go from there with them? Sure ,they have lots of other good songs...but not like that! Maybe "Golden Country" from their very first live album in the mid 70's. How about a straight ahead party rocker like "Back The Road Again". It was a hit and featured their bass player on lead vocals. I believe it was from their Nine Lives release. This was before their ballad years which I don't think they ever came out of.
You guys didn't comment on it, but you did show the album cover.... one of my favorite album titles ever... "You Can Tune a Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish" :):)
Maybe their best song…genius writing. The live version of this is fire…Great reaction by you two.
Thank you guys for not faking your feelings. It took a minute before you began to feel the flow, and it seems like the guitar solo was too much.
** If you really liked the feel-good message I would like to suggest
1.) Rush - "Spirit of the Radio"
2.) Triumph - "Magic Power"
* These get me right in the soul even though I've been rocking to these tunes since the EARLY 80s
A great band in the '70's when they really rocked. They were started in Champaign, Illinois,by Neal Doughty and Alan Gratzer. The late great lead guitar player was Gary Richrath, who wrote some of their best songs, including this one.Check out more from them!
There’s a Canadian band called New Pornographers that’s evocative of REO in the way that they’re just frenetic, almost racing through songs on 10 from the jump. It’s so busy and produced and broad (in the way that Boston was) it kinda shouldn’t work but it does, it just carries you along. It’s not like metal-fast, but it’s real uptempo and the band kills it on their hits. They weren’t skating by on record label hype, that’s for sure.
Saw REO with Jeff Beck & The Jan Hammer Group at the University of New Hampshire in 1976. Great show.
Fyi-been a REO fan for 40 years and probably seen them live 40 to 60 times. Gary fans (Kevin Cronin haters) still come out of the woodwork whenever REO is mentioned.
If you don't do Golden Country, either the studio or live version, you're not knowing REO. They're from the midwest, started touring college campuses in the early '70's
……just saw REO last summer with STYX 🔥
Still rocking out and sounding like they did from the 70’s 🎸🔥❤️
My detour was April Wine in these years, in between listing to heavyweights. REO Speedwagon was unfairly up against immensely talented bands, their own immensely talented musicians cracked through, but went to soft pop ballads to stand out. Which hurt them probably with most rock fans.
REP Speedwagon is an American rock band based out of Bloomington IL
That was their downfall in my opinion. They got very repetitive to me. What they did was great. No shade... The musicianship 1st rate. The voice very distinctive but...
- the 1970's were Rockin' and the 1980's were Rollin' thus so With The Changes>}
Let's hear it for REO Speedwagon's awesome album title: You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish
God, I love this song! Thanks guys. This is REO at their rock band best, before the ballads (yes, I know Time for Me to Fly is on this LP)
Gentlemen, please check out BACK ON THE ROAD by REO. Real banger. 🎉
Champaign, Illinois band, Richrath was from Des Moines. I lived 30 miles away from both at one time or another.
Indeed, took me to church. What a great tune. Great reaction with your musical backgrounds. American Midwest band.
This is a Midwest band out of central Illinois, like Head East, and Styx out of Chicago.
