I manage the datacenter at our local hospital, and in that capacity i’m responsible for the maintenance of our CRAC units… i had a great talk with one of the engineers of our HVAC partner, he was impressed by how much i knew about the details of AC systems… i pointed him to this channel, i learned so much from just watching you do your work 😊

I retired after 50 years of HVAC S/M in 2010 and still enjoy your vids. Wish I had something like this when I was young. One thing you didn't mention that I learned the hard way was the importance of checking ALL the screw-type electrical connections. Great instructional vid anyway.
I think you are the first youtuber I have seen to actually acknowledge the issue of first person view videos and motion sickness. So many interesting channels out there that I just can't watch because the person making video seems to be clueless about such things.
I’m in my first year of HVAC in tech school and purely watching these videos has helped me understand the confusing plethora of technical bits in the refrigeration world. How you explain everything is really easy to understand even for a noobie like me. Keep up the great work!
You need to take one of your daughters with you as a consultant when interacting with new computer equipment. My 5 year old grandson is over the top when it comes to new equipment and I feel I’m reasonably tech savvy!
I would imagine recent GoPros will overheat within 10 min under summertime rooftop condition. Just stick with whatever works for you. I'm gonna watch every video no matter what.
Just did 41 RTUs at one of the locations we service. All with CORE. 2 week project with EMS. By the time I was done, I know that controller like the back of my hand. Had a few issues on install - blower wheel never tightened, condenser fans not tight, bad Core (wouldn’t allow pairing), wires swapped on pressure switch and limit (causing pressure switch stuck closed), two units with no charge in one compressor (Lennox knew when they sent out and were aware and let us know they would fix) and testing 2nd stage heat wouldn’t work, would only do 1st stage, Lennox said it was most likely a firmware update. Natl accts warranty service techs from Lennox came out and fixed all the issues. A few tips - make sure when diagnosing condenser fans that you are aware on the C box units there are 3 ECMs, and 3 PSCs, don’t know why so many issues pairing, because I just hold the button for 5 secs and it pops up, when setting date and time, just click the “use mobile phone time and date” and it sets it automatically, make sure when checking amp draw read the motor nameplate, the units data plate wasn’t always accurate (tag said RLA 8 amps, but motor was actually RLA 4 amps). If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

You were right about the rats nest wiring. If that unit came to a site in the UK it would not pass an electrical inspection and would not get juiced up. Looks like a monkey threw it together in a factory. 🤣
No phase rotation as standard, exposed live terminals, compressors not jacketed still using Y G W O etc cables passing through steel panels no grommets. It's basically brand new outdated junk. But l bet it's got a Union Made sticker so it's all good.🎉

WOW this thing`s a bloody spaceship. only thing its missing now is VRF capability with EXV`s and frequency drives for the compressors. High tech HVAC is so awesome!
Great video. Bluetooth has range about 33 ft, if not enhanced to bt 5.0 (100-1000 ft) But as long as you have to pair with controller, un-paired bt devices will not have access. As far as I know...
They finally got a on-premise control system for small and medium ton HVAC units to work right. I'm impressed. It looks like more fun than putting in and firing up a Lennox PULSE "buzzbomb" HVAC unit. We did one at the HVAC school I went to and it made everyone jump when it fired up the first time and we didn't have the panels on. It was LOUD. I wonder if it can be configured for off-premise management. That would save a TON on service calls.
You know when you was trying to get the I to delete the text to change the unit name instead of trying to tap at the edge you can press and hold the space bar and use that to move the I position so much easier when trying to type in the exact spot 10:18
When you tried to enter a name for the unit the software isn't set up to allow spaces. That's why you saw the underscore in the default name. It's a common thing done in software though as a dev I'm disappointed they didn't go to the effort of letting spaces be added. But yeah, for future reference just use an underscore if it won't accept a space. So something like BAR_AC
Wow a manufacturer who makes a setup via app that is actually usable. And not just a data grab to get all your info to sell to advertisers. Honestly kudos Lenox. Also re the security. Someone would need to open the panel up and pair their device to start with. And even if they managed to do that. They would need to be quite close to the unit. And especially close if the panels were all closed as that would kill a good part of the signal too. So i wouldnt think its any issue. If they are already on the roof they can mess with the unit in other ways. Its not the sort of thing someone could just sit in the car park or whatnot and hack into it Anyway, happy new year mate. And dont worry about the way you film stuff. We all know that your first priority is to do the work. The video is just a bonus for those of us who enjoy watching this. I for one like the 'real' not overly edited way you do stuff. Been watching you since the early days when you would work on that crappy old rack that had the swamp cooler bolted on the side of it.
man I don't understand why you're so positive about Lennox. Whenever you install a new unit or a new coil, it almost always comes with a pre-damaged coil or with obvious mistakes in the manufacturing. And inside the cabling is just horrendous straight from the factory. A few years later these units are completely broken. Maybe I'm just not seeing the quality, or maybe they're cheap versus the competition, but man

The Prodigy one controller is such a hassle to deal with. The Prodigy 2 was such an improvement, haven't had much experience with the Core yet, but I absolutely love how helpful the Lennox apps are when it comes to their units.
I work for a Lennox dealer and this is the first I’ve seen this style rooftop unit. Seems like a nice way to do a full start up and set up. Sadly I’m not surprised with the condenser fan motor issue. I swear there is no quality control on anything.
I had a feeling you would like the Core. I got to experience it back in 2022. One had a variable speed compressor in it and it was a true humiditrol. There is a good amount of available information on the Core. Its a good system. Glad you got your feet wet with one.

New controller is very interesting and looks like Lennox did good on that. Only thing is from my experience you really need a tablet, it makes a lot of these so much easier not using your phone. I’m in a small company that doesn’t have any of that so that might just be me. I haven’t decided if I like that there’s no password, easier for me to get in but also for others.

Bluetooth on a unit like that is going to be pretty secure since you'd need to put it in pairing mode to be able to connect. At that point they're already in your unit and a USB based solution would be just as insecure.

To my industrial automation eyes the connectivity and control options look like wild overkill for standalone units but I'd be so happy to see it on an integration project. The actual wiring and build quality is a rare combination of rat nest and unusually nice touches. Motors that can actually handle running slow under load are probably way outside the price bracket of these RTUs so i wouldn't be surprised if the speed setting was scaled to whatever Lennox thought they could run at without cooking the motor in the warranty period.
Check out some Aaon units... alot of hvac package units from all manufacturers are getting sold with advanced controls and vfd motors that the user will never get the benefit of. But they will be paying for more than usual service calls
Holy smokes, I am a trainee, and I make prettyer control cabinets. Holy SMOKES "murka". few words from industrial norway. IP65 EVERYTHING, Slotted wiregueds, And ferrules is suprising? I get mad when i dont have them on finlely stranded wire, it is mandatory over here, due to the risk of a bad connection. But coolio with the controller tho, the UI can be workd at, as for the service friendly ness, but a good step forwards!
Having done some work with industrial electrical panels and system control cabinets, I am always amazed by this rats nest of wiring the HVAC equipment leaes the factory. From those systems, built to a degree with troubleshooting and servicability in mind, I may just be too used to having distinct input and output blocks where all wiring comming in or going out gets connected and the internal wiring beeing either cleanly strapped down or put in kind of cable rails. The stuff I worked with also was mostly designed to go on DIN Rails, so that was a common spacing, but thoise really make a difference in how they are mounted and how easy components are to replaced, otherwise it doesn´t matter. All wires within the cabinet had to have ferules or some sort of connector put on to be code compliant and avoid stray wires or bad connections. And looking at the space available, there is plenty of room to build them that way. But I guess that would be an additional few bucks to build them that way.
I don't work in HVAC, either, but I have built many pieces of audio equipment and have at least been generally knowledgeable with extremely high-end aerospace electronics. I am also amazed at how messy even brand-new units look. I can understand leaving excess wire at the service for the reason mentioned, but my goodness, all that extra wire just floating around and hanging otherwise unsupported is just asking for problems. Any of that could be installed in such a way that it *never* rubs out or has an issue, and since these units only have a few phyical variants (with various options installed or not), making a jig to build the harness takes a day or two non-recurring effort, then every one of them can be built neatly, the same way, for less than it does to semi-randomly slap it in there as they appear to be doing.
Chris, first of all: happy new year and best wishes for you and the family. Regarding the "rubbing out/through issues" you face with wiring: See if you can find "Spiral wrap". It's basically a spiral of plastic that you can selectively wrap around any wire or cable or even (small) looms. It physically puts around a millimetre of extra plastic between surfaces and the wires. For looms it has the advantage it clamps the wires together so they cannot move with respect to each-other and thus not rub. You don't want to over use it though as applying it simply takes time that you most likely don't want to explain to a customer, but for those cases like in this video with the large AWG for the mains power wires in that metal disconnect enclosure, it sure couldn't harm to put some small diameter of this stuff over every individual phase-wire. I guess you have to see for yourself in order to get a bit of a feel for it. The good thing about it is that it is a little forgiving when you don't have the right diameter for the wire or loom, it does stretch, and for the use of putting distance between surfaces it does not matter much if there are gaps, as long as there is a layer in critical places.
If your talking about what I think you are...That stuff is not code compliant in a commercial setting due to toxic fumes being emitted when burning. Also, you do not want any more "protective" coverings of any kind on load supply wires due to heat build up.
@@grandinosour didn't think about that detail. I used to build laboratory equipment for a major manufacturer/brand that has this wrap around every custom cable loom in it. It was also made to a standard for use in the american market as this device was sold internationally. Not sure what type of plastic it is, as there are many.
There's something so statisfying about watching a full brand installation. I dunno, if it's the craning of the old unit, or the setup of the new unit exaclty how you like it (for the excess tails for example). Obviously you're very unlikely to get called out to this unit in the future, you hope I'm sure. But I'd love to a see a follow up if you do it as a company following installation.
On those emc motors they are controlled by sensible and latent heat sensors on the condenser coil. Problem is on cold windy days on a call for mechanical cooling the sensors don't read properly and will go off on head pressure. I had to put some insulation tape on around the sensors themselves to resolve this problem.
ANOTHER CRANE MONTAGE! I wonder how it would have affected your CO levels if you ran more heat were you are, thanks to that MAU. But I doubt the building would use full stage heat very often or for very long.
I worked in LNAS (Lennox National Account Services) and these Core 4s have me worried. Here in Florida, we have a lot of lightning strikes. All the CFMs are ECMs, and they just recently started to add connections at the motors. Plus all these VFDs, we get a high rate of VFD failure and Lennox has bigtime backorders for VFDs that NAS told us to bypass the VFDs and ignore them. They get this blower issue S52 lockout, i believe this is caused by a error in their system. I like the connection with the Bluetooth, which is nice, but other than that I'm wondering just how many issues we'll run across in the future. What if the Bluetooth function fails? Is the customer left in the heat when a VFD fails? I just see so many issues with the technology, otherwise it's a pretty neat unit. They completely got rid of the L series/prodigy 2 boards which i don't like. I feel that should be their mid tier, but oh well what can we do. Keep up the good vids Chris.

We have issues with our Lennox/Allied units having issues like you found. We've had them show up flat with factory braze joints leaking, contactor screws stripped out where we couldn't land our wires.
I think Lennox units with Humiditrol can also use the gas furnace or electric heat instead of a reheat coil. Not very energy efficient but you can do it. Not 100% sure as I haven't used them in a few years.
Funny, I've had a couple units come in saying Humiditrol, and they aren't. Also, I've just relocated the factory sensor, and it comes with a wire lead for the relocation. They stopped sending a new sensor.
QC is a big issue within manufacturing since Covid. It's harder to find good quality technicians from troubleshooters, assemblers and QC. I've been in the manufacturing industry for decades this is a very strange time for any related industry. The Silver Lining is that companies pay a lot more for experienced workers now than ever before. Thanks, Covid!
The older units are better. All I see is more stuff in the same place. They should put more space between common failure points like contactors. Also, what's the wall in front of the 2nd compressor. As if they are spread in the first place, but they're not.
Did you flip the Economizer Free Cooling Temperature Set Point? Correct me if I am wrong, you set it lower, so the economizer will not be enable until that lower temperature is reached. You not being aggressive, you are using the economizer less and more AC.

Good video. I’m not in HVAC at all or anything to do with that but your videos are really interesting to watch. It is disappointing that an American company like Lennox could allow their product to go out without good quality control little things like that where it could become a big issue with the condenser fans falling off because those bolts weren’ttied down tight enough. And then little tiny nuance like the humid troll logo being on the panel just little things that these guys there could’ve double checked. I mean I’m sure they have pride in their work just as you do.
I personally don't like using hand signals anymore. Everyone has a cellphone now and most have a Bluetooth. When I use a crane now I just call the crane operator and we can communicate instantly and not to mention I don't have to stand next to a roof line and I'm able to have both of my hands free to maneuver t h e unit in place.
My most embarrassing goof up was nukeing a core board on a core unit that was a prototype. I messed up the transformer taps and sent 480V to the board and fried it. They ended up taking a board off a unit on the assembly line to replace it for the customer. Talk about a panic attack when I realized what I had done.
I did four of those units on that job and I had trouble pairing all of them. Had to power cycle multiple times and try a bunch of different things like you did to get it to pair.

I agree Prodigy 1 was a mistake, 2 was better and so far in my opinion Core is the best!
I work for a Lennox dealer and this is the first I’ve seen this style rooftop unit. Seems like a nice way to do a full start up and set up. Sadly I’m not surprised with the condenser fan motor issue. I swear there is no quality control on anything.

I had a feeling you would like the Core. I got to experience it back in 2022. One had a variable speed compressor in it and it was a true humiditrol. There is a good amount of available information on the Core. Its a good system. Glad you got your feet wet with one.

New controller is very interesting and looks like Lennox did good on that. Only thing is from my experience you really need a tablet, it makes a lot of these so much easier not using your phone. I’m in a small company that doesn’t have any of that so that might just be me. I haven’t decided if I like that there’s no password, easier for me to get in but also for others.

Bluetooth on a unit like that is going to be pretty secure since you'd need to put it in pairing mode to be able to connect. At that point they're already in your unit and a USB based solution would be just as insecure.
It looked more like WiFi Direct than Bluetooth. Difference being it doesn't broadcast a signal unless pairing mode is activated.

To my industrial automation eyes the connectivity and control options look like wild overkill for standalone units but I'd be so happy to see it on an integration project. The actual wiring and build quality is a rare combination of rat nest and unusually nice touches.
Motors that can actually handle running slow under load are probably way outside the price bracket of these RTUs so i wouldn't be surprised if the speed setting was scaled to whatever Lennox thought they could run at without cooking the motor in the warranty period.
Check out some Aaon units... alot of hvac package units from all manufacturers are getting sold with advanced controls and vfd motors that the user will never get the benefit of. But they will be paying for more than usual service calls
Holy smokes, I am a trainee, and I make prettyer control cabinets. Holy SMOKES "murka". few words from industrial norway. IP65 EVERYTHING, Slotted wiregueds, And ferrules is suprising? I get mad when i dont have them on finlely stranded wire, it is mandatory over here, due to the risk of a bad connection. But coolio with the controller tho, the UI can be workd at, as for the service friendly ness, but a good step forwards!
Having done some work with industrial electrical panels and system control cabinets, I am always amazed by this rats nest of wiring the HVAC equipment leaes the factory. From those systems, built to a degree with troubleshooting and servicability in mind, I may just be too used to having distinct input and output blocks where all wiring comming in or going out gets connected and the internal wiring beeing either cleanly strapped down or put in kind of cable rails.
The stuff I worked with also was mostly designed to go on DIN Rails, so that was a common spacing, but thoise really make a difference in how they are mounted and how easy components are to replaced, otherwise it doesn´t matter. All wires within the cabinet had to have ferules or some sort of connector put on to be code compliant and avoid stray wires or bad connections.
And looking at the space available, there is plenty of room to build them that way. But I guess that would be an additional few bucks to build them that way.
I don't work in HVAC, either, but I have built many pieces of audio equipment and have at least been generally knowledgeable with extremely high-end aerospace electronics. I am also amazed at how messy even brand-new units look. I can understand leaving excess wire at the service for the reason mentioned, but my goodness, all that extra wire just floating around and hanging otherwise unsupported is just asking for problems. Any of that could be installed in such a way that it *never* rubs out or has an issue, and since these units only have a few phyical variants (with various options installed or not), making a jig to build the harness takes a day or two non-recurring effort, then every one of them can be built neatly, the same way, for less than it does to semi-randomly slap it in there as they appear to be doing.

Regarding the "rubbing out/through issues" you face with wiring: See if you can find "Spiral wrap". It's basically a spiral of plastic that you can selectively wrap around any wire or cable or even (small) looms. It physically puts around a millimetre of extra plastic between surfaces and the wires. For looms it has the advantage it clamps the wires together so they cannot move with respect to each-other and thus not rub.
You don't want to over use it though as applying it simply takes time that you most likely don't want to explain to a customer, but for those cases like in this video with the large AWG for the mains power wires in that metal disconnect enclosure, it sure couldn't harm to put some small diameter of this stuff over every individual phase-wire. I guess you have to see for yourself in order to get a bit of a feel for it.
The good thing about it is that it is a little forgiving when you don't have the right diameter for the wire or loom, it does stretch, and for the use of putting distance between surfaces it does not matter much if there are gaps, as long as there is a layer in critical places.
If your talking about what I think you are...That stuff is not code compliant in a commercial setting due to toxic fumes being emitted when burning.
Also, you do not want any more "protective" coverings of any kind on load supply wires due to heat build up.
@@grandinosour didn't think about that detail. I used to build laboratory equipment for a major manufacturer/brand that has this wrap around every custom cable loom in it. It was also made to a standard for use in the american market as this device was sold internationally. Not sure what type of plastic it is, as there are many.
There's something so statisfying about watching a full brand installation. I dunno, if it's the craning of the old unit, or the setup of the new unit exaclty how you like it (for the excess tails for example). Obviously you're very unlikely to get called out to this unit in the future, you hope I'm sure. But I'd love to a see a follow up if you do it as a company following installation.
Those M4 boards make PMs easy breezy, especially when you have 20+ units on each site.
On those emc motors they are controlled by sensible and latent heat sensors on the condenser coil. Problem is on cold windy days on a call for mechanical cooling the sensors don't read properly and will go off on head pressure. I had to put some insulation tape on around the sensors themselves to resolve this problem.
ANOTHER CRANE MONTAGE! I wonder how it would have affected your CO levels if you ran more heat were you are, thanks to that MAU. But I doubt the building would use full stage heat very often or for very long.
I worked in LNAS (Lennox National Account Services) and these Core 4s have me worried. Here in Florida, we have a lot of lightning strikes. All the CFMs are ECMs, and they just recently started to add connections at the motors. Plus all these VFDs, we get a high rate of VFD failure and Lennox has bigtime backorders for VFDs that NAS told us to bypass the VFDs and ignore them. They get this blower issue S52 lockout, i believe this is caused by a error in their system. I like the connection with the Bluetooth, which is nice, but other than that I'm wondering just how many issues we'll run across in the future. What if the Bluetooth function fails? Is the customer left in the heat when a VFD fails? I just see so many issues with the technology, otherwise it's a pretty neat unit. They completely got rid of the L series/prodigy 2 boards which i don't like. I feel that should be their mid tier, but oh well what can we do. Keep up the good vids Chris.

The wireless connection system is really a great thing. Lennox should be providing more real time data in the app of the units regarding pressure, temperature & essential diagnosis things.
Also Lennox should focus on their quality control department as loose fan motor bolts are not a great thing, apart from misleading labelling the unit😅

We have issues with our Lennox/Allied units having issues like you found. We've had them show up flat with factory braze joints leaking, contactor screws stripped out where we couldn't land our wires.
10:25 on apple devices, if you hold the space bar it will let you move the text caret around easier than trying to tap the location on screen

I think Lennox units with Humiditrol can also use the gas furnace or electric heat instead of a reheat coil. Not very energy efficient but you can do it. Not 100% sure as I haven't used them in a few years.
Funny, I've had a couple units come in saying Humiditrol, and they aren't. Also, I've just relocated the factory sensor, and it comes with a wire lead for the relocation. They stopped sending a new sensor.

QC is a big issue within manufacturing since Covid. It's harder to find good quality technicians from troubleshooters, assemblers and QC. I've been in the manufacturing industry for decades this is a very strange time for any related industry. Will you have heat with the occupied to the G terminal with a gas unit? The unit controls the fan, not the tstat.
The older units are better. All I see is more stuff in the same place. They should put more space between common failure points like contactors. Also, what's the wall in front of the 2nd compressor. As if they are spread in the first place, but they're not.

Did you flip the Economizer Free Cooling Temperature Set Point? Correct me if I am wrong, you set it lower, so the economizer will not be enable until that lower temperature is reached. You not being aggressive, you are using the economizer less and more AC.

Good video. I’m not in HVAC at all or anything to do with that but your videos are really interesting to watch. It is disappointing that an American company like Lennox could allow their product to go out without good quality control little things like that where it could become a big issue with the condenser fans falling off because those bolts weren’ttied down tight enough. And then little tiny nuance like the humid troll logo being on the panel just little things that these guys there could’ve double checked. I mean I’m sure they have pride in their work just as you do.

Everyone has a cellphone now and most have a Bluetooth.
When I use a crane now I just call the crane operator and we can communicate instantly and not to mention I don't have to stand next to a roof line and I'm able to have both of my hands free to maneuver t h e unit in place.

My most embarrassing goof up was nukeing a core board on a core unit that was a prototype. I messed up the transformer taps and sent 480V to the board and fried it. They ended up taking a board off a unit on the assembly line to replace it for the customer. Talk about a panic attack when I realized what I had done.
I did four of those units on that job and I had trouble pairing all of them. Had to power cycle multiple times and try a bunch of different things like you did to get it to pair.
