  • The Flying Deuces - Ollie has fallen in love with the innkeeper's daughter in Paris. The only problem - she's very much in love with her husband. To forget her he joins the Foreign Legion with Stan. Bad idea.
    The Flying Deuces (1939)
    Director: A. Edward Sutherland
Writers: Ralph Spence(original story), Charley Rogers(original story), Fred Schiller(original story)
Stars: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Jean Parker
    Genre: Comedy, War
    Country: USA
    Language: English
    Also Known As: Flying Aces
Release Date: 3 November 1939 (USA)
    Duration: 68 min
Filming Location: General Service Studios - 1040 N. Las Palmas, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
Oliver is heartbroken when he finds that Georgette, the inkeeper's daughter he's fallen in love with, is already married to dashing Foreign Legion officer Francois. To forget her, he joins the Legion, taking Stanley with him. Their bumbling eventually gets them charged with desertion and sentenced to a firing squad. They manage to escape in a stolen airplane, but crash after a wild ride.
    Reviews:
"The only Laurel and Hardy movie I would unequivocally recommend.
That statement right above goes without saying that I haven't seen too many of Laurel and Hardy's films (I've also seen their Christmas nutcracker film, and one about making a movie or other, though the memory is now hazy for the most part on what I did or didn't see as a tot). But this is not just a classic from the duo, but one of the funniest comedies I've ever seen. It's refined slapstick, made up of facial gestures, anger, repetition, big life decisions like falling in love, suicide, joining the French foreign legion, and flying a plane without much control of a wheel. The director, Sutherland, also somehow crafts out the single funniest joke ever crafted around (as silly as it sounds) a mountain of laundry. It's not a very complex storyline, as Hardy falls for a girl, can't get her, feels down about it almost enough to jump into the river, but gets a word of advice right before it happens by a fellow traveler to join the foreign legion to forget about it. But they get in over their heads by joining, and want to quit, and soon become the biggest bumbling boobs to ever join up, leading to many chases, and that death-defying plane ride (or is it?)
It's the kind of film that unless getting head-on into Laurel and Hardy's distinctive and influential comedy timing will only really be of interest if passed on down as a child. It's a great comedy though for all ages- if the term 'family comedy' might be a little too pat a description, but one that does have a central appeal as smart physical comedy- as it doesn't pander to anyone, and even has a sincerity to it. I still remember most fondly the song and dance number Laurel and Hardy do in a moment of a jam (Shine on Harvest Moon, I think it was called), and the supporting character work is also a fine plus. And, quite frankly, one of those quintessential wacky end scenes that keeps me smiling, and laughing depending on who I'm talking with about it, where a certain horse with a mustache and hat appears saying "another fine mess you got me into." A pick-me-up comedy of manners and pratfalls, it'll always have a place in my collection not only for nostalgic reasons (it was one of the first videos I ever owned), but for its stamina so many years later."-Written by Quinoa1984

Same here. I'm in my 50s now so I'm not old enough to remember them but my late dad was born in 1930s. I got his taste for TV and movies. Love The British Carry On Movies plus Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis Movies. Very funny physical comedies. They don't make them like they used to. Quoted by my dad 1st and now by me 😲😁

Me too! Films played at weekends in UK. I watched in 1970s as a young kid. Everything for me stopped. I just had to watch L&H. They made me laugh. I was addicted. The Piano and the train journey on the top bunk, and the boat renovation films will always be my favourite. Perfect duo and best friends to the end.

My dad putting this film every morning up for me on video tape when I was waiting on the schoolbus to collect me when I was 6 and 7 years old in 1982 and 1983.
    It became our favorite film.
The funniest part I'm my memories whas the long washing lines and the onnormly big pile of wash that Stan climes on, end the long line soldiers who sheasing Stan and olive in the cell tro the secret pas way under the floor board.
I loved the guardian face , when he looks in the totally empty cell, and of course the harp bed of stanly.
My dad passed away , of cancer , on the 5th September 2023 he was 71 years old.
I was with him the moment he died , of euthanasie.i still love my dad so much.
This movie is a happy memory of us together laughing on the same things .
It was of how he wanted rise me .
With humor, and compassion to the fellow humans.
    Love you dad.
I really hope you do Stan laurel, and Oliver hardly greetings in heaven.

Funny movie, one of their best, I think, but It should be viewed in black and white. The lighting, the shadows, the camerawork were all designed for black and white. If it's colorized, the colors can only be guessed at.

I agree, while it can be fun to see it in color I too prefer it in b&w as it should be seen. The best colorization work I've seen were the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies, I still prefer the original monochrome because the atmosphere is better that way.

Huge fan of Laurel & Hardy. Their comedy is timeless. The colourisation does add something but it also takes away something at the same time. It seems to have been done by automation as many scenes are flickering between colour and b&w, the colour also seems to be limited to just adding skin tones. If this work was carried out by humans then I am sorry because it would have taken a long time to do and I appreciate their time but I would prefer to watch the original b&w version as the colourisation distracts from the genius comedy.

This is great and well worth a watch, this movie was at the late transitional point in L&H when they were between Roach studios and Fox. Its a mixed bag this one is but still way better than the fox pictures they did. Also they were getting a little too old for it.

Not the greatest Laurel and Hardy film, being largely a retread of earlier films Hal Roach Studios made with them, but certainly a lot better than their last few films (they found themselves increasingly squeezed by studios who wanted Stan & Ollie, but didn't realise the films were at their best when The Boys were the focus of the story and not just one part of it). The plot of this one seems to be most reminiscent of their earlier film, 'Beau Hunks'. The colourisation is nicely done. :-)
