The PRS sliver Sky SE is the only guitar in my world where I would be happy with any color choice. They all look great, maybe if I saw them in real life next to each other, only than I would have a favorite.
It is! The rosewood fretboard is amazing as well as the satin neck. The piano black color is super elegant as well. I didn’t wanna get one at first cuz im a legacy company fanboy (i only buy gibson or fender cause their the main companies used in rock history) but my brother convinced me. Im glad I also listened to my mom. She was the one that told me to get the silver sky se in piano black and let me tell you, once it arrived and i opened it. I felt a connection to it. Almost mystical. You’ll know what i mean if its happened to you. It was great out of the box. But the way it played and felt was amazing. I have fender strats and les pauls in my collection and this is my favorite guitar. Its the only guitar in my collection that brings out the best in me. My improv, chord progressions, etc. are on a whole nother level once my fingers touch my SE. it’s weird and i hope u guys know what i mean
It definitely might be. Both Mayer and Paul have said Mayer wanted the colors inspired by Tesla cars and their aesthetic. Mayer could've has the Porsche in mind for that specific color
Initially, I wanted the maple fingerboard. After hearing some comparison videos and thinking it over for a while, I decided on the rosewood. The resonance is definitely different (better or worse, subjective). After noticing the resonance difference, and ultimately deciding on the Rosewood Moon White version - the maple fingerboard feels incomplete for me
Love mine got it today just getting to know the S style sounds funky and twangy! Very cool soune, very comfortable to hold w the body cut. Rosewood for me
I've had a chance to try out a few samples of the maple fingerboard SE and compare it with the Rosewood models that were in the store. Just a few observations: -The neck carve on the maple fingerboard models feels a little bigger than the earlier SE Rosewood models. Not necessarily thicker or wider but I think the carve has more "shoulder" to them -The newer (or recently made) Rosewood models also seem to have a similar carve to the Maple fingerboard versions -The satin finishes on the maple neck versions don't feel as nice as the Rosewood models -The inlays on the maple fingerboard version seem to be made up of the same plastic material used on the tuner buttons/truss rod cover (wish they just went with an outline instead) For myself, I will probably try to find a deal on an earlier used Rosewood model as I preferred that neck carve but those who prefer a fuller feeling neck carve may like the newer models. But I agree, my choice would also be to get a nylon blue or summit purple with the earlier Rosewood board necks. :)
I just got the rosewood version mint condition used at a great price. It’s Dragonfruit. I haven’t been able to put it down. It’s lighter than my USA strat and the pickups seem more mellow. Someone in the comments said the pickups were very hot. I am not finding that. My PRS 35th anniversary has the hottest pickups of every guitar I own. These just sound great. Also the neck is just right for me and I would not want the maple version if it is thicker.
Was going evergreen/rosewood but now overland grey/maple. Local store has a bunch on sale by appointment only. I'd get both but my wife would freak out.
@@TomButwin I bought two today, a Dragon Fruit with the beautiful rosewood fretboard and a Nylon Blue with a really clean maple fretboard. Both were so gorgeous I couldn't resist. The Overland Grey's maple fretboard had too much grain going on and what looked like a watermark on the 3rd fret. And the Evergreen just didn't click for me. Their shop is setting them up for me for pickup tomorrow. Setup includes fret ends and polishing. When I demo them tomorrow that's when the rubber meets the road. They have a 14 day return. The shop owner took care of me, great guy and great guitar player. He said if anything is wrong with either one the repair shop will let us know. Main thing is is good straight neck. And my wife didn't freak out. We can afford it, and I got a twofer compared to buying an American Pro or Pro 2.
(This comment is just me talking myself into buying one 😜😬👍🏼✌️) Just noticed all pay plan sites now have these in lefty and even though i barely play at all and dont ever see myself getting “good” at all these giving rosewood option im fairly confident G.A.S. Will win out one more time . Especially since im a blues / SRV fanatic and fender did NOT make player plus strats in lefty sunburst rosewood and i ended up getting a maple …I don’t know why for sure , but theres nothing “ wrong “ with that guitar …its fricken excellent but i seem to have to force myself to noodle around on it …my old 2012 mim sunburst rosewood strat that i put a lot of time in on as a completely newbie was the last inexpensive rosewood fender in sunburst lefty ive seen…and i stupidly sold it years back …(one of those regrets that stick witH ya to the end) …long winded point : i dont care if the sky isnt a sunburst and the colors they offer in rosewood are decent !
Hey Tom, I have another question. Some say the maple neck feels chunkier, is that your feeling as well. I really like maple necks but haven’t come across at any of my local shops. And I’m not really a fan of chunky necks.
I would say that’s true. When I had the rosewood version and compared it to my Core rosewood neck, I felt it was much thinner. The Maple version seems on par, (maybe a little chunkier?), with my Core neck…but that’s not a good comparison, though. I think you’ve got to get your hands on a few to really tell
@@ICee712 No, I would say the radius has a much less significant effect on feel. The carve/shape/thickness on the back of the neck is what really does it for “in the hand” feel. A 7.25” vs 14” super flat board will feel different to play, yes, but that’s not the difference I’m talking about here. 7.25” and 9.5” are almost imperceptible, in my opinion.
I’ve played both and I’ve found the Silver Sky SE to be more inspiring. Check out my affiliate links in the description if you get either one! Supports the channel.
Just played a se silver sky and a player strat at guitar center. Imho the se sounded profoundly better. Sometimes you have to switch back and forth to compare guitars but I played the se for 30 mins and the player for 30 secs. Going back tomorrow to buy the se
Hey Tom , I finally was able to try one out today, actually identical to yours nylon blue. Quick question, I noticed the front of the bridge is sitting up with the back down tight to the body. Is that the cause for such high string action, because I pretty much liked everything else about it .
Let me make sure I understand your question. Do you mean the bridge is pulled up away from the body by the strings? If so, it could affect the action slightly, yes. I like my Fender-style tremolo bridges to be flush to the body. Generally, Silver Sky's come set up that way, so I wonder if someone took out springs from the back of the one you played in the store. If you end up getting one, ask for a new in box guitar, rather than the floor model and it should be setup properly. If not, I've got some affiliate links in the video description that will get you a new in box one too!
Has anyone played the $200 sonic series squier and compare it to this prs? I swear its the same neck and quality. Ive played this SE model at guitarcenter and cant get over how similar these necks feel. They dont feel like strat necks. Both a little wider and chunkier. Both have this light cheap budget feel to them. Thats just my take.
I prefer rosewood but love maple as well. The maple on these looks too white for my taste. I just ordered one from GC, and I'm perplexed because in their description it says it possesses a push pull tone pot for humbuckers sounds as well as single coil tones? Can anyone confirm this statement?

The color choices are really great on the Mayer guitars, Core & SE. I wish they still made Golden Mesa!
The big thing that makes wanna choose se silver sky over fender player is that the rosewood fretboard is so much nicer than the pau ferro imo.
Agreed. I’ve got a video coming that compares the SS SE and the new Vintera II 50’s Strat. Make sure you sub for that!

The Player II has gone back to Rosewood (or Maple).
My educated guess based on Mayer’s niche interests is that this color is based on Porsche’s Murano Green 🕵️♂️
Might need to collab on a “What inspired Silver Sky colors” video…🤔
It definitely might be. Both Mayer and Paul have said Mayer wanted the colors inspired by Tesla cars and their aesthetic. Mayer could've has the Porsche in mind for that specific color

Having played both, I agree. Rosewood would probably be my choice too.
Same here. Everyone is hyping up the Maple because it's the new thing but ... Rosewood version sounds more full. It's got a Magic the Maple doesn't
Hooked me with that intro! I HAVE TO KNOW
😂
Really nice sounding guitar, hard to tell what the color looks, at times it looks greenish blue. Or is more blue ?
Tom, thanks for the video. Which one is your favorite SE model so far?
Thanks for watching! SE DGT is my favorite, by far. But, honestly, they’ve all been great guitars in that price range that I’ve demo’ed.
Love mine got it today just getting to know the S style sounds funky and twangy! Very cool soune, very comfortable to hold w the body cut. Rosewood for me
Rosewood is my first choice too! Thanks for watching.
It just sounds better than the strat in every way. I'm getting an Silver Sky SE

Sounds like it’s time for a SS SE neck swap! Lol Thanks for these insights. Really appreciate it.
@@TomButwin oh I would love to see a video on that so I could get an idea of what the nylon blue would look like with a RW board :)

I’ve found they (the SE) are much hotter than the Core Silver Sky, but I’m not sure how they compare beyond that
Isn’t it criminal that at PRS itself they couldn’t loan the rosewood model to do a comparison? 🧐
Lol I absolutely could have had one. They were exceptionally accommodating. I only asked for the maple! Didn’t expect to be making comparisons.
If only you knew about my criminal past….
Fiddle dee dee
Pickups are so much hotter on the SE. It’s bizarre.

Can’t go wrong with either!

The Silver Skys, both Core and SE, are three single coil guitars. No push/pull pots. Sounds like a copy/paste error on GC’s part.
Hard to tell what the color really looks like. In this video, it looks more greenish blue.
True. I always have trouble representing the finishes accurately.
Is it lighter than Fender Strat Player?
Not sure if the weight differences exactly, but I think they’re both about 7.5lbs
I had one. The neck sucks
Have you tried the rosewood version?
You talk too much
