I always wished a new brand would come out,just for lefties, and than they'd make a "limited edition right handed" guitar. I think that'd be dope, to make sick guitars the majority of ppl want, but can't have, so that we see how lefties have felt for the past 70 years
Are you a fan of the PRS SE Silver Sky John Mayer guitars? Let me know in the comments. I tried my best to dial in some great tones and check the time stamps for all the video sections and review portion. Check it out here🛒 Sweetwater - sweetwater.sjv.io/q4rojy 🛒 Thomann - bit.ly/3zY5syj 🛒 Sky Music - alnk.to/58qWAB8 (affiliate links)
I've never listened to John Mayer, but I've certainly heard of him and PRS! It's such a wonderful change, to be able to leave a positive comment, and have a reason to watch the entire video. So many manufacturers don't even bother making a lefty of their new models 🤔 so I don't bother watching the videos about them, all the way through. You know who I'm talking about😮
This is just an educated guess at best here, but I imagine that PRS and PT Cort were waiting for the tooling and manufacturing investment costs to pay for themselves through the sheer volume of instruments, and get a nice profit, before they turned their attention to what is clearly a “side quest” in their eyes. FYI product management/development guy here.
In the UK you can shop around and find a Righty Silver Sky SE for under £600. You can currently get a Lefty Fender Mexican Strat for under £700. The Lefty SS SE is £1000. If PRS want to impress lefties then don’t try to take advantage of us with prices. When they announced them I was really excited, but then I realised it sounded the same as my Mexican Strat I bought 20 odd years ago for £500.
Funny enough, I hated the idea of the tuners. But when I got one, I actually really liked how the tuners feel to me. I would hate it on a vintage inspired guitar but on a PRS it works and I really like them.
Real nice, glad to see PRS giving us some cool choices. It come in three colors with the rosewood board, and three other colors with the maple board. Gotta try one, I hope the neck is not too fat for me as I prefer thinner necks. Thank you Shane!
Nice review! Completely agree regarding the Modern C neck. I've been back and forth on getting a Strat and you may have just sold me on this one because of the neck. Those pickups sounded really nice too. Not overly harsh like some I've played.
Stoked for you bro, and all lefty's. It's such a great guitar and now you get to play one.I think after you see how well these things stay in tune you will probably get one for yourself.I owned a core, and have owned two ss se's.I still own one.
I'm going to break from popular opinion and say I like the aesthetics of the tuning keys and truss rod cover paired with overland gray and a maple fingerboard. The important thing is that they didn't have to sacrifice sound quality to bring down the price. It's like an old farm truck - it doesn't look like a hot rod, but it has a certain quaint charm, and still has power where it counts. With those bright trebles and dark crunch, the whole package is like glimpsing the sun behind the clouds on a stormy day. It's perfect if you like that bluesy '60s strat tone, and I sure do! The critics may unleash their thunderbolts of hate, but I'm determined to fly in this silver sky, and they won't bring me down. 🕊
Thanks for the review, Shane. I know bugger-all about Mayer's music but I picked up a used SE Silver Sky in green a couple of months back as it had enough differences from a Strat. I think, overall, it's a great playing "strat" that offers a bit more in dynamics and is just a tad more refined. PRS kept a lot of the Core model features, (yeah, including those plasticky tuning keys) along with the neck carve apparently being quite similar. I'm very pleased with mine.
Although the quality has always been pretty consistent, it wasn't until the Silver Sky SE came out did I find a PRS that I liked their pickups. Since the Silver Sky ,the DGT SE and McCarty 594 SE came out and both of those are stellar. In fact, having those three, I could cover any ground. In my opinion, the most bland pickup PRS uses is the 85/15 (I think that's right). And because they use them so much, I had a hard time finding a PRS I liked. Always appreciate your thoughts, production and of course your playing, Shane. I've been following you close to a decade now.
I have one and it’s never had an issue with the tuners. I also just got the NF3 which are fantastic guitars. I like it better than the Silver Sky. Of course my American CE’s are my favorites.
My sky moon white model should be here at the end of the month and Zack Myers model arrives a couple after it. Would love to see them drop a left handed Tremonti model in the near future.
Agree on the plastic bits on the tuning keys, the american silver sky has the same style which I don't love. I don't think people complain too much about the similar tuning keys on a 50s style les paul though.
It’s a great guitar I bought one in moon white. But are they going to release a lefty American made silver sky? It sounds and plays better than the SE model.
Shane, Would you choose the Silver Sky SE over a new Fender Player Stratocaster? The PRS bridge pickup sounded "bigger" than Fender, more like a Tele bridge, which would be better for rock music. Did it sound like that to you in the room? Thanks for all of your excellent content, its nice to see a fellow lefty!!!
Hi Shane, I’d be interested in a video on how you set up your strat bridge like you described here, if you have done one or could do a vid on that, be much appreciated. ❤ Also, I was also really keen on the the Silver Sky SE, but like the other SE’s, it’s as though PRS just cheap out a bit on a few things like non-locking tuners (plastic in this case which looks awful), non-SS frets and a few other useful features which are now commonly found on much cheaper guitars. To get those features, you’re having to jump up into the big buck PRS’s alas. 😮Otherwise, I’d probably have bought one by now.
I can't say much about the chkice of tuners. Those are just like the ones John chose to put on his US made version, so I understand why they have them on the SE.
In a good selection of colours too. So tired of Black, White & Sunburst options, or you see an axe that's available in Left AND a different colour, but it's the only option and it's crap. How hard it must be to spray a different paint on left handed options?
There are things that i like about the Silver Sky, like the color choices, the pickups, the neck profile and the bird inlays. However it also feels incredibly cheap once you have it in your hands (it does to me anyways). Every plastic on the guitar, including the pickup covers feel incredibly cheap.
So refreshing to see a Strat knock-off being played in the “proper” manner (lefty). One is reminded of other genius lefty players, Hendrex, Albert King, et. al. To bring this guitar to market without the proper knurled aluminum control knobs and stainless tuners borders on criminal. Lastly the headstock is beyond ugly. In closing, great tone and the gangster hoodie adds an edgy look…
BUT that tilted back both sides tuners? Why do I want to ever not have a Fender 6 in a row headstock on a Strat style guitar? For the same money would go with the Vintera 2. Very similar guitar with a proper headstock and tuners. Same radius and frets and more authentic 60s Strat pickups. Is that to honest? sorry.
I'm not a PRS hater and I appreciate they coming out with a lefty, but I just don't like the look of those guitars and if I'm going to get a Strat it's gonna be a fender or a G&L.
I´m not a PRS fan, just find the pickups lacking. And, I didn´t realise that this is noiseless pickups! A definite no from me. To me noiseless pickups always sound "dead".
When the Silver Sky was introduced, I really didn’t think much about it other than it’s a PRS shaped like a Strat. Oddly enough I grew more interested in trying one , especially when the SE version came out and now with a left hand version, I can finally own a proper lefty Strat style guitar! My main question for you Shane is comparing these with both a SE Custom 24 and a MIM Strat, how do you feel this Silver Sky stacks up? In reality, I don’t need this guitar, however Anthony from TXBA says I’m missing out on a whole new world playing beyond 17th fret so I might need this guitar!!🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for this long awaited review!!😎😎😎😎🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
The guitar looks okay, although I could do without the silly birds. PRS have the worst policy and attitude when it comes to making lefties, so I won't be buying one new anyway.
Man i cant be the only one who hates the grey truss rod cover!? 😂 easy change but weird design choice imo. Sounds very stratty, $1350 stratty? Maybe not to me but im also not a high roller. 😂
"Tone tuner buttons" per PRS, lol. I do wish that they put a better looking truss rod cover on the SE Silver Sky guitars. It's horrible when compared to the one on the US Silver Sky. Other than that, these are very appealing.
I hold the "You don't see left handed pianos, do you?" remark from Paul Reid Smith against him. Besides, literally bleeping years after the Silver Sky comes out, a lefty model. The head of a guitar company shouldn't piss off roughly 13% of the population. I know I won't buy his stuff, chap platic tuners and truss rod cover included. Oh, and the pickguard looks cheap, too. Other than that, it sounds great.
Yes I usually point out to assholes who say that about pianos that the piano is already a left handed instrument; my fretting hand-dexterity comes in very handy doing melodies on a piano whereas a righty player does not have this advantage.
I always wished a new brand would come out,just for lefties, and than they'd make a "limited edition right handed" guitar. I think that'd be dope, to make sick guitars the majority of ppl want, but can't have, so that we see how lefties have felt for the past 70 years
Actually I would have put the number of years we lefties have been singled out for cruel treatment in the millions!!!
Spot on comment…good lad.
I’m right handed but I totally get what you’re saying 👍
Lefties are a small percentage of players
New Salem guitars is own by a lefty, and I believe his righty models are one dollar more expensive. lol
@@shanewalton8888 it somehow only seems fair to punish the right-handed players with the additional expense…Ha!!!

We got the righty SE silver sky in the darker blue. Absolutely love it.
I've never listened to John Mayer, but I've certainly heard of him and PRS!

I honestly just assumed they made a lefty considering its the most sold guitar of the past 2 years. Im shocked it took so long.

thanks Shane, great tone and great playing.
Just ordered my Storm Grey Silver Sky SE lefty yesterday! Never thought the day would come, but we are here!

Hell yeah dude! One of the best sounding middle pickups I’ve heard! And that bridge/middle brings the perfect sultans vibe ❤
I feel like I’ve waited forever for this thing. It’s about damn time. I’ll take 2, please.

Wow, your playing has come along. That finish looks better in your video than in Sweetwater's site.

Great playing Shane, and a great review. I’ve been waiting for your review on this. I keep kicking around the idea of buying one myself.
I'm losing my mind waiting for Elfa to hook me up with one of these, I'm so jealous hahah. Awesome video!
About time Shane!
Sounds nice!
\m/
This and the DGT SE are stellar guitars for the price
Great video Shane!
Thanks, Eddie!
Getting mine tomorrow...already on sale in the USA....15% off. Getting mine for $700 total (no tax, free ship...AND free $299 PLEK job for grins).
Smooooooooooth! And it sizzles too. Actually bizarre, I can hear tubes when the amp is set on Fender.
Thanks mate! You're up late as well! haha.
Your playing has improved much! Either that, or you were just really jiving with the Silver Sky lol

I got mine (r/h) Oct 23.
I held off for a year but I'm glad I took the plunge.
Takes the load off my old Strat.
I’m not a Mayer fan but love my JMSE. I roll with the Dragon Fruit
I have one and it’s never had an issue with the tuners. I also just got the NF3 which are fantastic guitars. I like it better than the Silver Sky. Of course my American CE’s are my favorites.

It’s a great guitar I bought one in moon white. But are they going to release a lefty American made silver sky? It sounds and plays better than the SE model.
Will be easy to swap out the tuners - either retaining vintage standard style, or moving to locking vintage.
````I went with the Moon white (yellow) lefty ...because of you !
Shane,
Shane, you need one of those.
Need to try out the new, Gretsch Jack Antonoff Signature “Princess Antonoff” Electromatic CVT. 🧐🎸🎸
I don't like admitting it but that sounds good. That said, I believe tone is 60% speakers, 30% amp and so on.
Hi Shane, I’d be interested in a video on how you set up your strat bridge like you described here, if you have done one or could do a vid on that, be much appreciated. ❤
These things resonate!
Hello Shane, will you test the Zach Myers signature prs?
The headstock needs to be the same color as the body. Too much of a contrast with the natural maple. Sounds good . Still a Fender man.
Great, now its time for zach myers
Mayer wanted modern plastic tuning pegs, not to be a slave to vintage chrome. It's his signature model, he gets to pick the specs.
The american version also has plastic tuners, just like gibsons
Yeah those tuner keys look cheap, though Gibson's most iconic tulip tuners are plastic as well.
