    If you have a drone, how long have you been flying one? If you haven't flown a drone, what is holding you back?

      Money is holding me back. I lost my job on December 8, 2020. I was working for a really bad company, and a really bad general manager.

      Nobody really "flies" a DJI drone, they "operate" it. You're only barely in control. You give it inputs and it flies itself. If you actually wanna fly check out FPV drones.

    Excellent video for newcomers. As always, a few comments... It should be emphasized that ever if you get a Mini, it is a tool, not a toy. Don't let the size fool you. It can do some serious work and can also do some damage if out of control. I recommend (for US) registering a Mini anyway on day 1, even though the bone-stock Mini 's weight is under the weight requirement. As soon as you put leg extensions and maybe a strobe you'll be over and have to register anyway. Just do it and not worry. Almost any accessory will put you over the limit. Take the 10 minutes and the $5 and just go register it. Secondly, remote ID won't be a requirement for at least 18 months. From a personal standpoint I believe that RID requires extreme measures to comply and what it takes far outweighs a relatively non-existent problem that has no data to substantiate it. Knowing what I know about government, I believe that at some point we could see RID used much like red-light cameras where you could receive a fine in the mail out of the blue just like you do in your car today. JMO.

    very good and very informative I am a newly Part 107 pilot and new to photography. and you are correct you need to practice etc...more you do the small stuff better you are when you start to use it for those great shots. as my Galaxy S10+ and Mavic Air 2 are my cameras. it has been fun over at PhotographyTalk I am learning so much. The big thing about the wind is it will eat up battery life so you may not make it back. Handshake thanks.

    Another excellent video, Alex. I have just shared it to the Mavic Pilot’s Forum as a new pilot was asking questions in the last few days and seeking advice. I hope that was okay with you. This was one of the best beginner’s guides that I have seen on YT. Comprehensive, patient, thorough and encouraging. And a good overview on safety, whether flying under FAA rules in the USA or when making personal flight safety assessments elsewhere in the world. You even commented on respecting other people’s privacy when flying near them. Thanks for posting. Cheers, from New Zealand 👍😎 🍺🍺🎸🍀 (P.S. I hope you found time to do that Google Earth and Street View visit down to my part of the NZ coastline that you were asking about! 👍 )

      Roxburgh, Otago... look at the red building! Talk about a great photo opportunity. When all this Covid nonsense is over, I hope to visit your country!

No sensationalism just good information that someone can use to evaluate their needs vs capabilities in the real world. Re use of a drone for "commercial use": if I were to become monetized on UA-cam and used a drone for video & photo content for the channel, would that constitute commercial use? This is purely hypothetical since my area is so flush with air traffic, drone use is out of the question anyway.

    • @larryhaley3
      @larryhaley3 3 роки тому +1

      john, i have seen just such videos, several actually, where the faa contacted people who used drone footage on their monetized channels and were reprimanded and required to have to license for money making purposes with a drone. forget what that license is but its a thing.

    • @photographytalk
      @photographytalk  3 роки тому

      Very good question. Honestly I'm not sure. I think I will call up FAA myself on that one. Now are you talking about a full blown drone channel or are you talking about occasional b-roll from drone?

    • @photographytalk
      @photographytalk  3 роки тому

      Perhaps 107? I'm going to call FAA tomorrow on this topic and to what extent of usage is permitted without.

    • @photographytalk
      @photographytalk  3 роки тому +1

      Hey John... so I got my answer... YES any use of drone footage in a monetized channel, you need to have 107. So... I signed up for Pilot Institute today to brush up on anything that might come up in my 107 test... and going to get that. Stay tuned!
