Bug Type Pokémon in RBY (And why they're not the Worst)

- We're taking a look at another type in RBY today, the Bug type! Typically thought of as one of the worst types in Pokémon history, I'm here to stand up for the type, and also one of my favourite mons in Generation 1! The Bug type has BIG problems, but one mon in particular tries to make it work.

And even now Bug typing doesn’t stand out; bugs from Gen 5 and Gen 7 do.
Okay but Ice types being built defensively instead of glass cannons is a tragedy whenever it happens.
Poor Avalugg even got recover in its movepool, it was destined to be a wall yet that typing shot it in the foot.

OG Avalugg actually makes it work, even though it would obviously prefer to be something else instead. I have zero hopes for the hisui form tho
especially when it seems like they could be fast design wise but just aren't like glaceon, glastrier and frosmoth
@@angrycinnabon2956 to be honest avalugg is actually quite a good defensive mon somehow, it getting recover and rapid spin let's it sustain and keep rocks from chipping it as most rockers get clapped by it aside a few, though it has a lot of weaknesses it has trouble switching in it also has strangely solid coverage that does the same for opponents as for example on of the common rock setters it cannot switch into is heatran which gets chunked by eq, I recommend reading the smogon articles for it in gen 7 ou as it's genuinely shocking seeing the laundry list of what it counters or checks containing some the most deadly wallbreakers in the tier.
I feel like the bug type in gen 1 is really emblematic of the fact that the designers *really* did not understand how important STAB is for a pokemon to be good. Scyther and pincer are clearly designed to spam the moves Slash and Vicegrip respectively. I'd imagine that if they actually got a bug type version of those moves they might actually have been the late game powerhouses that I think they were meant to be.
i don't think they really understood the damage formula they had in general. most pokemon games have weird base power progressions in general, but gen i is easily the _worst_ offender where you have the aforementioned scyther learning the aforementioned 35 power wing attack ... at level _50._ it learns slash at 29. sandshrew learns slash at 17 ... and then _poison sting_ at 24! then swift at 31, which, sure, there's _some_ argument that an attack that can't miss could _potentially_ have value over a move with 10 more power and a high crit chance ... but then seven levels later it learns _fury swipes_

hell there's shit like _water gun_ being a tm - not even as, like, a cheeky secret you can use to chump brock, you find it in mt. moon and it's _immediately_ obsoleted by bubblebeam as soon as you beat misty - not to mention the sheer nonsense that is razor wind. mega punch is another mt. moon tm, but razor wind can be repurchased endlessly at celadon. except ... so can mega punch. celadon also gets you access to mega kick. both mega punch and kick aren't all that great - mega kick _is_ the strongest normal move that isn't hyper beam or self-fainting, but damn is that 75% accuracy rough - due to being so inconsistent and having no extra utility, plus mega punch's only advantage over body slam is that it can be repurchased and ... like, 5 pp?, but they also don't impact turn economy at all. razor wind _asks for a charge turn_ for ... the same power as mega punch and the _same accuracy as mega kick._ at least you could theoretically fish for crits with it? ... in gen ii, maybe, but literally the only extra effect razor wind has in gen i is the charge turn. its drawback for its ... completely mundane power with terribly consistency
literally, the only thing that razor wind has over mega punch is that most pokemon that can't learn mega punch can learn it. in other words, _razor wind is basically a punishment for pokemon without hands_
oh and egg bomb is a semi-signature move for the exeggcute line and chansey that can only be taught by tm. being normal, it is a physical move in gen i. exeggcute has 40 base attack. chansey has _5._ exeggcute also only has 60 base special, but chansey has _105._ it's at least not _completely_ terrible on exeggutor's base 95 attack vs. 125 special, but that still means its special attacks deal ~30% more damage against targets with equal defense and special. it admittedly gets _literally only solar beam and psychic as special attacks,_ but can a 100 power 75% accuracy move with zero utility really stand up to either of those with a 30% stronger special? especially when exeggutor has some great utility moves to fill up its move slots?
this is partially a matter of pokemon getting movesets that do not match with their stats at all, which _is_ an issue that plagues the series even to now ... but keep in mind that i said that this is a _semi-signature move._ mew can also learn it but it's a tm move and it's mew. no, by design, this is a move that is _incredibly_ limited in availability _and you have to go out of your way to use a resource to teach it to one of those three pokemon that can use it._ it is _designed_ for them ... and it's literally just a worse mega kick on pokemon that don't want mega kick to begin with
oh and speaking of egg moves, chansey, and tms: softboiled is a tm move. it is also still chansey's signature move. like, actually. chansey doesn't learn it _naturally,_ yet it's the only pokemon that was supposed to be in the game that can be taught the tm. it's legitimately a tm that exists for the sole purpose of a single pokemon. a single, _extremely rare_ pokemon that can only be caught using the safari zone's minigame. this isn't related to the thing about the damage formula, it's just one of those things that makes me wonder if pokemon red and green weren't just ai generated all along
@@hi-i-am-atan Makes you think really, how this series even jump started when its first game is such a major mess in nearly every aspect. Honestly if it wasn't for Gold and Silver, this series probably wouldn't have lasted long with this amount of balance and design disparity.
@@hi-i-am-atan Water gun TM is justified actually since it's pretty realistic to have beaten through Brock's team with a slightly over-leveled Charmander which probably won't work too well on the hikers in Mt. Moon. Like half the pokemon you can catch up to that point can learn the tm so it's a good way to give a kid that has no idea what they're doing a way to deal with the rock types that will stomp their charmander.

To that point Gen 2 still had a lot of really awful stuff like Hitmontop's only stab is it's signature Triple Kick which is godawful and it doesn't even learn it until level 49. Meanwhile Hitmonlee is easier to get, has a better stat spread, and learns the excellent High Jump kick at level 26.
This is of course ignoring the fact that you only get any of the hitmons at level 5 after beating the elite 4 and have to grind it up which is a big issue with a lot of pokemon in gsc including a large number of the new ones.
@@TheWrathAbove i mean that's not _wrong,_ but it still doesn't change the fact that it's an entire tm slot dedicated to the move the water starter learns at 15 ... which is actually the move it should really learn at _8_ but nope, for whatever reason charmander just gets ember at 9 while squirtle is stuck with the half power bubble for seven whole levels. which is still better than bulbasaur not being able to deal grass-type damage until level _13_ because they just. really thought pokemon being able to deal damage of their type was a _privilege_ or something?
it just feels really shortsighted, especially in comparison to the option of placing a water, grass, or fighting ( with, y'know, an actual fighting type move ) pokemon on route 3 or 4 or even in mt. moon. which i mean, _technically_ they did? but it doesn't exactly count when that pokemon is a _goddamn magikarp_
actually, that's selling it short. they _did_ give you plenty of options like that ... like paras and sandshrew, neither of which learns a damaging grass or ground move naturally. or geodude, which gets you access to earthquake! ... if you grind it to _level 31 without evolving it._ or if that's not your style, you can grab a nidoran back on route 22 and grind it to _43_ for ... double kick
seriously, for as many of the questionable decision yellow left in ( and, uh, made itself. truly that level 50 gen i wing attack will fix all of scyther's issues ) at least it had the decency to give you access to mankey and bring the nidoran's double kick down to level 12. they may not be as _good_ as the, uh, friggin' _water gun_ tm because they're only double effective and have to deal with the rock-types' massive defense instead of their meager special, but at least it gives you a better opportunity to play around with one of the games' _fundamental game mechanics_ without making a tm out of a move with the same stats as _pound_
parasect being ass in every single tier its ever been in besides ubers is fucking comical
Reminds me of the FSG vid on him in comp.
I wouldn't say that Parasect is "good" in Ubers; more than anything else, it just has a small but potentially amazing niche in gen4: it's immune to water thanks to having dry skin as it's ability, which lets it check choiced Kyogre, which is considered to be the best Pokemon in gen4 Ubers. It's for a similar reason why Abomasnow was also used, except that it resisted both water and electric while being neutral to ice (the 3 offensive types of Kyogre's main attacking moves), and it's snow warning ability cancels out the rain brought by drizzle due to it being slower

I find it kind of charming how much of an unmitigated disaster gen 1 is. It's certainly got heart
RBY is the Melee of Pokémon: it’s broken, but the bugginess is really part of what gives a bizarre amount of viability to Pokémon that seemingly shouldn’t have ANY. Raticate, for example, has a poor BST, but getting Super Fang + Hyper Beam gives it a theoretical 2 hit on almost every Pokémon in the game. Fire types are dealt bad matchups, but they’re almost all fast, and many have Fire Spin to try and fight back against rough matchups like Rhydon or Slowbro with partial trapping, and having a BP 120 STAB with a more than 25% chance to inflict burn per click gives a nice chance of survival
TLDR: it’s broken in the best way

Let's put it this way. I was a playground legend and undefeated at recess because I had a single level 100 Pokémon (Raichu). I didn't have any other level 100s. I didn't even have a Zapdos because I killed it, and I'm pretty sure my movesets were trash. Gen 1s charm was not in its balance (or lack of bugs). The beauty was the core game play itself. I'm glad others have figured the game out and made it more fun, but the fact that most teams use the same core 3 tells you everything you need to know.
seeing beedrill struggle to oneshot the abra with a double-hit super effective move only for the abra to then oneshot it back completely fills me with an emotion i can't describe

If something as simple as X-Scissors, literally a Bug type Strength, existed in Gen 1 most of the Bug type Pokemon wold be viable. Too bad for Butterfree tho.

I agree. With 110 Attack, 105 Speed, and X-Scissor, I could even see Scyther having a small niche in Gen 1 OU. It'd be an immense threat to six of the big players in that meta, and it'd be very dangerous if it got to set up at all. Pinsir would probably be very strong in UU.

Even something as simple as Leech Life having its modern day damage from the start [base 80 power today vs base 20 back then] would've helped a fair bit, plus it'd also be supplying a little bit of longevity due to the life leeching and all
Fun fact: If pin missile was learned by Pinsir, it would have the capability to seriously fuck up Mewtwo's day.

5 hits 93.9-1180.8. 64.1 Chance to OHKO.
If it crits and gets 5 hits it doesn't even need to swords dance. If you somehow get up two dances? It only needs 4 to hit, not even 5. We might have had a genuine way to dent the psychic types of OU, and had an answer in ubers. If only pin missile was given to pinsir.

The whole situation with beedrill just makes the psychic type seem that much more hilariously unbalanced. The one bug-type pokemon in the entire game with the most powerful super effective move against psychic types, and it's so weak that it can't even survive in a tier where every psychic type pokemon is banned for being too strong.
It gets even funnier still when you realize that the best user of any bug type move in gen1 is Jolteon, which not only doesn't have a good attack stat, but also doesn't get STAB on it's bug move, pin missle

With Beedrill and Butterfree you can kinda see what they were going for when implementing them into the game. Like I think they're solely meant to just be caught as your first team member and evolve really quickly, which is great for like a few hours of gameplay, but then they get outclassed once your starter evolves, and are replaced when you progress further in the game. But even the Bug types they put in the late game aren't that good.
Things like Poison being objectively bad, and Psychic being overpowered kind of make sense when looking at Gen 1 like an RPG instead of something that was actually balanced for PVP battling (poison is the "evil" type and psychic is the "good" type, or whatever). But you'd think that, since Pokemon as a whole was inspired by Satoshi Taijiri's love for bug catching as a kid, that bug types would have been treated a bit better? A world where X-Scissor existed in Gen 1 would have been pretty cool.
I do think it's interesting to think about Gen 1 like that cause they probably had no idea of the staying power this series had, so they potentially just thought about how the game was balanced for people playing the story and not so much about pvp
Indeed! Bug types were meant to be the DQ Slimes of Pokemon, Poison was "Evil", and Dragons were "Bosses".
Would be cool if you insist using the underpowered bug types of the games beginning, and they eventually get good at lvl 50+.
The bug types in late game were supposed to be good, though. They just didnt yet understand what made a good pocket monster

Parasect has such a cool concept but it has been competitively horrendous in every Generation it’s been in.

@@HD-nb7kw I think a hivemind-type design could be cool. Just imagine, the main Parasect has been completely covered by the mushroom, almost looking like Crustle. The limbs are fungified Paras that act as the arms and legs. And for its unique move, it would be spore on every Pokémon on the field.

I agree with anyone here but also I think we're overlooking the incredibly hilarious fact about how in gen 4 Parasect kicked down the door to Ubers to bully Kyogre with a water immunity + Spore

I'm probably completely out of my depth here, but I like to consider the whole game when talking about placement, not simply the endgame or postgame. Bug is always really, really good in the early game, doubly so when you're 10 years old and trying to plow through the NPCs, rather than other players. This is probably by design: Bug types getting their final evolutions early, and having the highest BST for that level, but losing their stat advantage later in the game when the rest of the Pokemon get to evolve too. Bug types peak in high school, but if high school football games are what you're betting on, you've got Bug types
This works great for pokemon like Butterfree and Beedrill, but Idk if it really applies to Scyther, Pincer or Venamoth whom are all mid-late game encounters and seemingly designed as such.

@@suddenllybah You can't get nor do you encounter Venonat till mid-game either. All three are supposed to be mid to end-game bugs that shows what the cream of the crop of the type can really do when not restricted to early game. They just really fumbled the ball doing that in gen 1 imo.

When Scyther works specifically because it’s the least Bug-type like Pokémon
Not really relevant to gen 1 but I'm still super impressed they managed to min max mega Beedrill's stats so well that they made Beedrill kind of a scary glass cannon with only a 100 base stat total increase. A solid damage boosting ability like adaptability really helps but it still wouldn't be doing shit if it's offensive stats were still garbage. The fact that it dies if you breath on it wrong was pretty necessary though.
Even better is how they made scizor a buffed Scyther without changing base stat total at all.
Giving Beedrill moves like Drill Run in Gen 5 made me have it on my team as a serious pick. Added on top of that its Sniper HA and you got a fun mon to use
They min-maxed so hard they actually lowered it's special attack (which it wasn't going to use anyway).
Mega Beedrill dies from being breathed on a little too easily, but with only a 100 BST increase there wasn't a lot they could do about that.

Move distribution was honestly pretty bad until the physical/special split in Gen 4.
This is why it's hard for me to go back to the pre-split games. It's bizarre that Game Freak never thought to implement the split sooner. The games feel broken when physical/special is tied to types.
I'd argue that while gen 1 and 2 are fairly horrendous in this aspect. Gen 3's learnsets are generally pretty reasonable and mainly just held back by the lack of the physical/special split.
I always found it silly that Ghost was a physical attacking type before the split

I'll never understand the ghost/dark situation in the older games. Shadow ball is a physical attack and bite/crunch are special...? Yeah okay gamefreak

Not just a massive OU threat. I honestly believe it would be one of the best Pokemon in the entire game if it had Megahorn in gen 1.

SD stab hyper beam OHKOs the majority of non-resists. It would definitely shake up the OU meta.
@@fengb1122 I don't think it would shake up the OU meta per say seeing as Rhydon is present and has consistant usage, Scyther just has no way of passing it. If anything though it would probably have a niche and be good in UU, probably being the best swords dancer in terms of viability in OU, like C Tier or maybe C+ ? But I don't think any further would be possible due to Rhydon existing and the unreliability of sd in general, as well as things like reflect snorlax which it can get past with slash but crit slashes also ignore his attack boosts from Sds so yeah. As for UU seeing it's speed tier and all I don't see it any lower than A Tier.
@@boniour3883 reflect Snorlax can’t switch into a sweep, and Snorlax takes 86-101% so any chip makes him a useless check. With how much hyper beam does to Rhydon (37-43%), Scyther can actually switch into an earthquake, SD on the rock slide with good survival odds, and proceed to sweep.
It might not see a lot of play, but the *threat* of a sweep would force some changes, such as bump Rhydon to big 4 and possibly bring up Zapdos / Jolteon.
And then heracross happened and severely outclassed pinsir, but we don't talk about that.
Hey you can actually catch pinsir in later games. It at least has that going for it.
@@Neogears1312 been playing Shining Pearl. Still upset over the fact it was easier to get a Feebas than finding Heracross.
Because Normal types were still really good in Gen 2 and you had some new threats like Tyranitar that would get completely smashed by a fighting move.
Honestly for as underpowered Bugs are some of the biggest meta threats have usually been bug types paired with another really good type that synergises well like Steel.
@@caldw615 That's because while the bug type as a whole is generally unimpressive (in no small part due to how many there are that are just plain bad), the type does still have a surprisingly decent number of hidden gems that are actually quite good. Some examples include things like Volcarona, Scizor, Venomoth, Yanmega, Pheromosa, and (as you mentioned) Heracross. Again, the main problem I think the bug type struggles with is that for every good one, there are 2-3 that are impressively bad to just utter shit
@@matthewkuscienko4616 Maybe in the first few generations, but ever since Gen 5 bug types have been consistently good or usable at the very least. Pheramosa, Leavanny, Scolipede, Vivillion, Buzzwole, Araquanid, Orbeetle, etc. And there are some from Gen 1-4 which are good or became good later (or were useable) on such as Scyther/Scizor, Heracross, Pinsir, Butterfree, etc
Long ago the psychic types lived in harmony (total domination) over the bugs, then everything changed when the heracross attacked
With all these psychics *cough* Exeggutor *cough*, it'd be nice to smack them with a super-effective move...

For the longest time I was trying to figure out where I had the idea that the bug type was weak to poison.
I've gone through pokemon games to this very day going, "Oh yeah, Bug is weak to poison, wait no it isn't what is wrong with me?"
I even had a thing in mind to remember it, bug killer sprays are poison.
Only to realize watching this very video, not even the first time, but the 4th viewing, that it was just a gen 1 thing.
What I really find weird is that Poison was weak to Bug right back. Which I don’t even understand, even less if that part still counts in later Gens.

Same, kinda. I dabble in competitive from time to time, but I’m more into the niche stuff like Little Cup. For me, I like watching these kinds of videos because it gives me a peak into an aspect of something I like that I’d otherwise almost never touch, giving me a greater appreciation and understanding of it without having to bang my head against a wall trying to figure it out myself.
You wanna know what the best Pokemon players feel about certain Pokemon like me.
Me too. I started with foofootoo, then Wolfey, then freezai, now I've discovered this channel. No intention of ever playing competitive Pokemon myself. It's just interesting!
The most frustrating part of bug types is how you could give any bug type the option to use any bug type move, and the only way to guarantee an unboosted non-crit OHKO on Exeggutor is Pinsir's Pin Missile hitting 5 times. And the only niche that really gives you is the mind game with your opponent on whether you're using pin missile on their Exeggutor, or Swords Dance expecting them to switch (if Exeggutor didn't already Sleep Powder it on the switch)
Gen 1 Bugs: Hey can i have a Single Bug fighting move??? Beedrill: NOO THEY ALL MINE!!!!
I think a lot of peoples' mentality about types being good or bad comes from the lens of just playing the RBY main game. People remember Sabrina being this overwhelming gym leader who made worse by the fact their one main counter was borked, so the Psychic type felt absolutely broken. On the other hand, when people think of normal or bug, they probably remember the Route 1 weaklings like Rattata and Caterpie. They arent considering Tauros, Pinsir, etc because they were hard to get and therefore probably not what most people associate with the types.
Beedrill gets a major viability buff in gen 2 with the advent of Sludge Bomb and Hidden Power, giving the bee actually respectable damage and coverage to take advantage of Swords Dance and Agility access.
Unfortunately they also added Skarmory and Steelix in that gen, which renders Beedrill unable to do much of anything.
I loved using it in Crystal Clear where it got Megahorn and all the Gen 1 TM moves
Twineedle has the edge case of poisoning Steel types. Not recommending you try it, but it's at least not nothing.
Honestly bug's reputation even followed it to later gens really. I still often see bug called out as "the worst type" despite arguably getting better and better with time with the fighting and bug resists in particular becoming more and more useful, it mostly gets a bad rap due to there being a ton of shitty early game bug type mons with horrendous bsts and the ever notorious bug/flying type combo.
Yeah, given how much a lot of the bad is reinforced with new throwaway bugs each Gen, it’s sort of understandable that the type would get a bad rap. But it’s definitely easier to appreciate these days: Scyther and Pinsir got brought up to where they were probably meant to be, and we’ve been getting plenty of new good bug types too, like Heracross and Scolipede (actually, Venipede is pretty terrible, but that makes it satisfying to even get it up to Whirlipede and suddenly it’s great).
While I’ll admit to being kinda basic with Lucario as my favorite Pokémon (I have actual reasons though), one Pokémon that would absolutely make my top ten is Larvesta. Didn’t count is as Volcarona, though the love carries over, since I’m much more familiar with the earlier form (similarly, I think of Gabite more than Garchomp with that line because I’ve spent the most time using it over its other stages). But that’s just it: even before it evolves, Larvesta is amazing. Great with both its main types, the grub will absolutely wreck stuff. It says a lot that I went into Violet planning to raise a Salazzle for my main team Fire type, only to ditch that plan the second I saw Larvestas in the desert.
Furthermore, Ground types have consistently been execellent, and Fighting types or coverage is now increasingly wanted. It now makes sense to want to use better Bug-typed Pokémon.

@@jbdbibbaerman8071 Regigigas is pretty much completely unviable because its overwhelming stat line is completely neutered by its ability, Slow Start. Slow Start halves its Attack and Speed for FIVE TURNS, which is an eternity by Pokemon battle standards. And the worst part is, Regigigas has been uniquely incompatible with certain protective moves pretty much every other Pokemon is compatible with, like Protect, that would at least allow it to try and stall out that timer.
But here's where Weezing comes in. In Sw/sh, G-Weezing was introduced, and both it and regular Weezing got a new ability, Neutralizing Gas. Neutralizing Gas prevents other Pokemon's Abilities from working. Hang on, Regigigas' whole problem is its ability! There has to be a doubles synergy here, right? Well, sort of, but not as good as you'd think. Yes, Neutralizing Gas does deactivate Regigigas' ability, giving it its stats back immediately... but only as long as Weezing is on the field. In a cruel decision by Game Freak, when Neutralizing Gas is removed from the field, SLOW START REACTIVATES. And what's worse? ITS TURN TIMER *LITERALLY RESTARTS.*

@@misirtere9836 keeping weezing on the field isnt too difficult with tech like focus sash, protect, will-o-wisp, etc.
Not to mention the fact that during the time the opponent is attempting to remove the weezing, regigas will dynamax 9 times out of ten and either start landing kos, or at least firing off max strikes, consistently lowering its opponents speed which sets up for another sweeper to take over until slow start had expired.
When it first became popular it had the coal-pull effect, if you didnt have a direct counter on your team then you lost the game before turn 1 even started.
Bug type having mostly really unfortunated mons has actually a motive/context. Not saying is a good reason to crap over poor Bug type, just commenting this for context
Pokemon developers got heavily inspired by Dragon Quest series to make the first gen. From getting enemies as party options (Like DQV, previous to Pokemon), repeating similar patterns, even art wise (Male Nidoran for example is based in the Spiked Hare) but also in the monster classifications
Why Bug and Dragon (and almost Bird type too) exist? Because they also took that from DQ
Insect monsters in DQ are intendedly meant to be weak, while Dragons were meant to be really powerful
You could see more parallels with other classifications (Rock/Steel with Material/Machine) but essentially Bug types got like that in Gen 1 because they were meant to be weak like in DQ. Also this is exactly why Dragon type is weak to Ice, they also took the idea from DQ

A lot of things in gen 1 suffer from poor or limited representation or combinations. I also think it's pretty clear that they had intended for there to be a certain type-hierarchy, but didn't really know how exactly to make it work out the way they wanted. Like I think it's pretty clear that they wanted psychic to be the best type, and for the most part they managed to do that. Then I think they wanted dragon and ghost to be the next best types, better than everything else, but not better than psychic....and I think that's where they failed, especially with ghost. I think in their attempts to make sure that neither were better types than psychic they effectively gutted them. And I think bug's treatment was also a result of this. It was the only type that psychic was weak against, and therefore they couldn't let it be good enough to actually threaten psychic's position. That's why there's no good bug attacks, and the movepools of the "good bugs" is hot garbage.

@@sketch-eee4165 Gen 4 it got Tinted Lens so it was like a decent Choice Specs user in NU or a Sleep Powder user, Gen 5 it got Quiver Dance, then Gen 6, Fairy's Introduction helped it a lot, and Baton Pass made it like genuinely insane in OU until Pass got banned, but even then it was banned from RU for terrorizing the tier, was a UU staple in Gen 7, and though it dropped to RUBL again, it's still even in it's smogon analysis rightfully said that it is a threat to sweep in UU if left unchecked. Venomoth and Crawdaunt are basically the only two Pokemon to get completely reverse power crept.

They are weirdly rare in the series since aside from gen 1 and 2 remakes and gen 4's underground (I think. I don't have the game yet) it seems to be weirdly rare to come by.
Technically Beartic is also properly reverse crept but to a much less extent. It sucked in its generation but does a lot in Gen 8 NU. However, Beartic was only given a chance to shine via the problem of the Arcto- fossils, so take his success what you will.

What I like most about the Bug type is how threatening they are now. The Bug type has, alongside Flying and Fighting, one of the greatest rises to stardom. You have threats like Scizor, Buzzwole, Volcarona, Heracross (which was good on introduction and has only gotten better), and there are even bug types in Ubers! Bug type deserves more love, and I’m glad it has gotten that love in later gens.

@@simonalbert7518 Scyther's bulk isn't fantastic but 70/80 isn't that far away from tauros and it's worth the effort of double switching or waiting for a faint to get him on the field, being so hard to wall (and It doesn't really need sd being that x scissor would hit harder than hyper beam and it's only resisted by zapdos and the rare gengar)
I *love* Beedrill, despite how bad it is. I keep one in my party when I play through the game's story. As unviable as it may be in competitive, it can do quite a bit on the casual side. Once you have Twinneedle, you can just rip through a massive section of the game: Most of Team Rocket just crumbles and it can provide a big boost against Misty, Erika, Koga, and (if you're feeling bold) Sabrina.
I actually prefer Twinneedle on Beedrill over Pin Missile: More consistent damage (Yes, Pin Missile *can* deal more damage, but only 25% of the time and I don't feel like fishing for that), and a 20% chance to poison the target.
If I'm ever just casually playing a Pokémon game I try to go out of my way to use weaker mons, mainly to make the game harder but also as an excuse to use mons like Beedrill

I'm not really the most experienced with RBY, I never have even played a match before around a month ago, but before then I'd been keeping an eye on it for a while and gained pretty surface-level knowledge on the main tiers. As of late, I've been talking a lot with some top-level RBY players lately for a public project, and it's been really fascinating hearing their insight on the RBY metas. There's a lot of very interesting differences between RBY and more recent gens, and there's a lot of things that you just cannot learn about it without playing it a good bit. A bit of this stuff I've heard is about the Bug-type.
Probably the saddest one with the context of this video, and something that would seem obvious to a lot of people but isn't something you'd think about, is that Pinsir would be much better as a Normal-type instead of a Bug-type. The STAB boost on its Hyper Beam and the immunity to Body Slam paralysis would outweigh the Ground resistance. I haven't heard this from anyone directly, but I can say with relative confidence that it would be even better with Normal/Bug than either of those singular types.
If Bug-types were just given all of the basics a lot of, even if not all of the other types have, there would have been a good chance that we got a viable Bug-type. Decent stats, actual STAB moves even if they're low in base power...those would go a long way to a type that desperately needs this help. A lot of the players I talk to say that Twineedle specifically is a decent move and a Bug/Ground-type would actually be really cool in RBY OU because of how it would check Rhydon and have a really strong dual STAB typing, although it would lose very hard to Zapdos unless it got lucky with coverage. A fast Bug-type with Twineedle could have been really interesting as an anti-lead for Starmie and Jynx, although it would lose hard to Gengar unless again it got the coverage for it. And of course, both Bug/Psychic and Bug/Ghost would be incredible, we've already seen how great Psychic is and you can imagine how good something like Gengar would be if it wasn't limited by the fact that it's Poison. And that's not even to mention some of the type combinations that would be decent, even if not as noteworthy like Bug/Rock for example.
Really great video, subscribed after I finished! Super informative to those who don't know a lot about RBY, it's unlike any other Pokemon formats you'll ever play and there's a lot of small things that the untrained eye wouldn't see. Helps that it's a really interesting topic to go over as well of course.
Kabuto and Kabutops should be bug/rock pokemon, trilobites live underwater but that's it, they have no reason to be water type, Kabuto even learns Absorb by level, a grass type version of Lich Life
It was for flavoring. Pokémon works on flavoring (and not even then), not sense.

Reading this comment makes me want to face a bug catcher with some of the better bugs we got over the years. Like, imagine running into Bug Catcher Billy in a forest and expecting the usual weak Bug/Flyings, and then he pulls out a Larvesta (or Arceus forbid Volcarona) and pushes your $&@$ in.
Bug Pokémon are like flareon. I like them and they look cool, but jfc you gotta give this thing better moves and more options if these are the stats we’re working with compared to the other options here. Most don’t get what they really need and frankly the type should also just be effective against fairy. I’m not even a guy who says fairy is too good because I remember steel has just been sitting there for years dominating the competition with a smirk on its face, but man how did no one think bug should be effective against this type? Did they just not want over half the eeveelutions to be weak to bug?
In real life I would never even consider being close to a bug, so having it as a pet seems crazy. But they are still my favorite type in-game along with dragon; still disappointed till this day yanma/yanmega never got a final evolution as a bug/dragon.

Just rewatched the video, I remembered it for reasons totally not related to me losing to a pokemon stadium NPC using Pinsir.
On my most recent playthrough of Pokemon Yellow, I experimented with making Pokemon hybrids. You can effectively give any Pokemon any moveset...with some limitations. I mostly used it to give some weaker Pokemon access to better stab moves: Jump Kick on Primeape, Sludge and Fly on Golbat, and Twineedle on Parasect.
Watching Parasect shred through Poison and Psychic mons was pretty fun. It's sad that even as far into the series as we are with BDSP, Parasect is *still* getting shafted. It lost access to Leech Life (at least until Home transfers open up) and its niche as a Spore user is outclassed by Breloom and Smeargle. It also has no physical Grass STAB to speak of. Every other gen 1 bug has received notable buffs over the years.
With how many bugs the gen 1 games have you would expect the type made for them to be better
And even now it’s not that Bugs are good, it’s that bugs from Gen 5 and Gen 7, and Centiskorch, are good. Who cares about Orbeetle and Frosmoth? Or Vivillon? And at this point anyone who enjoys a little competitive Pokémon knows that your only other option is Scizor, and given how the other Bug types are that was an accident.

In a regular play through Parasect is awesome. Despite being slow, 100% sleep with spore is cracked due to Gen 1 sleep mechanics. Plus, tons of trainers have gloom, Oddish, bellsprout, or other grass/poison Pokémon. I went one Gen 1 run without a fire type cause I had a counter with 4x SE move for every single grass type in the game minus tangela. Even though leech life is only 20BP, the trainers rarely have anything stronger than a weepinbell on their team. I also had something for all the dual poison types. Parasect is great in Gen 1!

Bug is the most common type in RBY by far. Bugs are literally everywhere. You can even get to a whole city that's a bug!

In monotype for RBY, bug is actually better than fighting, ghost, dragon, and ice since it is resilient to earthquake and can actually use fully evolved mons. Also have three sleepers and stun spore! It’s a shame though psychic still beats it…
Better than ice? Not really with a 90%accuracy stab blizzard, and 30% of freezing your opponent. And in gen1 freeze you cannot unfreeze by yourself unless you get hit with a fire move, apart from firespin, but fire types are non-existent in ou. Beedrill is weak to psychic, we don't talk about butterfree, who is also slow, scyther is ok, but lack of decent bug moves while is weak to ice/electric/rock (pretty common moves) the immunity to earthquake doesnt really amend for all of these. It's not super fast either.
Dragonite can atleast spam the opponent with wrap strategies, and if itis able to outspeed them, maybe with a T-WAVE, and if your opponent doesnt have rhydon/golem/gengar, you pretty much win,since the momentum is completely yours, it has 85% accuracy,however. There are definetily 2 mons you outspeed in everyteam and more specifically chansey and snorlax, so Dragonite wrap strat is not so niche. You need to have an answer for that. Ofcourse you also outspeed the forementioned rockt ypes, but they are partly ground, so you cant paralyze them with T-WAVE so as to minimize the consequences in case you miss since it has 85% accuracy and you are doing super small damage, and because of that they can pp stall wrap easily if you continue hitting them, making the strat useless.
Better than ghosts? Gengar can build great momentum cause is immune to normal, making it an excellent pivot pokemon, and in case youuse explosion you always have a chance of a comeback cause you may kill something important or re-build moment cause you are sending a new pokemon out.
Better than fighting? I'm not sure how to answer that since both types face similar problems
The only problem with mono ice is that it only has five Pokémon that are fully evolved. Sure, you get jynx, cloyster, Lapras, articuno, and…dewgong. Seel and shellder are water type, which leaves you without a sixth slot. This makes team preview for the other team much easier to decipher in the builder, and because you have to use the same five mons, you have to basically use the same builds each time you play ice in monotype, placing you at a huge disadvantage. There’s some debate at whether it’s better than fighting and maybe rock, though, which is I guess something.

Running off of my comment on a more recent video, thank you for this one! I've learned quite a lot from it, and the first bit is maybe a little embarrassing, LoL. I'm not a competitive person at all, so I never looked up what UU and NU and OU ever meant, and none of the other people I watch have ever explained that. I feel stupid for never looking it up, maybe was a bit intimidated by people who knew so much more than me (I just want to collect), but regardless of whether it was an intentional bit of information or not I am very grateful. The second bit, so far, was that I had no idea that Parasect had a 100% sleep move. Several strategy guides I referenced in trying to get my Gen 1 living dex mentioned the Pokemon, but never mentioned that! It makes sense now! And literally because of you I'll be implementing them in my further Gen 1 gameplay. Again, I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, and it may be pure accident due to the focus of this video, but including "common knowledge" without a gate-keepery, negative callout has solidified my endearment to your content. I hope you keep it up, and I look forward to keep learning things and getting some laughs from you.

In the last month Gen 1 UU was in Showdown's RoA Spotlight I ran a team with Venomoth using double powder, psychic and mega drain, and honestly when it worked it kinda slapped, the rest of the team benefitted heavily from parahax and hypno didn't have to run hypnosis.
Since seeing this video, bug types in general have become my favorite. There’s so many skrunklies like Vivillon that have funny lil meme sets, and some genuine meta threats like Scizor and Volcorona.
Pinsir is pretty good in gen 1. It's problems are the lack of any good attacking moves and a terrible movepool like Scyther. This means it's stonewalled by Gastly
My favorite Bug-type trivia: Not only does only Beedrill get the only _semi-decent_ Bug-type moves to attack Psychic-types with, but Beedrill is part Poison-type - _making it weak to Psychic-type._

I think the confusion around individual Pokémon viability is partly because of the tiering system itself being confusing. Most other competitive games I've seen just use SABCDF tiers, not OverUsed, UnderUsed, NeverUsed, etc. The name Never Used in particular heavily implies that a Pokémon in that tier is not viable in any way, so unless you know that NU is its own self contained metagame, you'd read it as F/bottom tier. And overall, it's just a lot to memorise. I still have no idea what ZU means

5:50 well, not to be that guy, but ditto does have a niche in Ubers, you can transform into the enemy's paralized mewtwo and have 2 mewtwos on your team.
love these rby type vids.would like to see an ice type one next since IMO ice is kinda underrated in this gen.most ppl know that ice is insane offensively but i think its also a pretty good defensive type in this gen since resisting blizzard and being immune to freeze is pretty great

I love Beedrill so much because I used it in my first ever Red game and I gives it all the loves. ♥
That said, Beedrill is a good example of "Decent idea, but.." it only took a Mega form with +70attack and speed, and a better moveset, to make it decent.. ahaha~

In Gen 1 PU, Scyther is an absolute Menace. It’s the second best Pokémon in the tier (behind Nidoqueen) and it’s the single fastest pokémon in the tier. It’s swords dance-boosted Hyper Beam shreds the entire tier apart. It’s hard countered by Graveler and Onix, and as a result either Graveler or Onix is used on the majority of teams to stop it. There are a few other ways to stop Scyther too, Machamp and Sandslash can survive a +2 Hyper Beam and threaten with rock slide (although they can’t switch in to Scyther), while Gastly is immune to Hyper Beam and can use thunderbolt to scare away Scyther (Keep in mind tho that since Scyther is the fastest mon in the tier, it usually drops agility for wing attack, and a +2 wing attack 2HKOs Gastly.) Scyther is insanely good but there are enough mons to keep in check so it’s not broken.
Gen 1 PU?! I thought gen 5 PU was unbelievable but this! Oh my god! Wasn't NU just recently discovered??
@@ShadowtheUA-camr523 not officially a tier but since a lot of whats good in NU is known (and we're only working out the mons on the border), some players decided to try games with the mons that are clearly not in NU.

Man, Scyther got did REALLY dirty in Gen 1.
A huge issue with bug is the designers made sure to handicap Butterfree and Beedrill. Because they can be obtained at level 10, they weren't allowed to have "fully evolved" stat totals
