Just sent in my swab... I hope I qualify and match with someone.. I know I'd be nervous about donating but I keep asking myself this question *is my temporary discomfort more important than saving a life?* No. So if you are nervous about doing something like this just ask yourself this question. It always makes me feel better about following through.
Thank you! When I told a few people that I ordered a swab kit to be placed on Be The Match to donate bone marrow, literally everyone commented on how badly they heard the procedure hurt. Like is some pain and a little discomfort that much of an inconvenience for you that you would decide not to save someone's life? If I turn out to be a match for someone, I would be so nervous and scared but if it means I can save someone's life, then it is well worth it.
Just found out I'm a match for a boy who's only 18. I joined just little over a year ago....I am feeling so blessed and overwhelmed with happiness to be able to give someone the chance at life. I can't wait to do this!
Honestly I always thought it was a surgical procedure to remove the marrow to be donated. I didnt realize it was just like giving blood. Definetely more excited to get my call now.
On rare occasions a surgical withdrawal of bone marrow is necessary (and even that is just using a needle to extract the marrow from your hip, not opening up your body a bunch like for heart surgery or anything) but the blood draw method shown in this video is much more common. It depends on the patient's needs.
Yeah I didn't realize typically it's just a really long blood donation. I had this horror movie scene in my head as far as what I thought had to happen to donate. If I had known it was this easy I would have signed up years ago.
I signed up for the registry about 7-8 years ago when I was in college. I just got the call last week that I matched with a patient who has Leukemia. The first few years on the list I was fearful of getting the call, not knowing how I would feel if I matched. Then I completely forgot about it, but when I got the call I was happy because it means I can save a life.
I've gotten to donate twice. First time was the old way where they knocked you out and drew the bone marrow from you with a long needle. The second time was the newer procedure and took 3 days. I'm hoping to be a match for a third person which they said is incredibly rare.
Can you tell me more about your experience, particularly with the needle? Did they put you completely out? Did it hurt afterwards? Have you experienced any long term affects?
I'm in preparation to receive a bone marrow transplant for my AML , and I'm beyond grateful for my donor and for all the amazing people who are on the registry to donate. From donating your stem cells to just donating blood at a blood drive, my life and countless others have been saved many times. So thank you thank you. :)

I just found an old "Be The Match" flyer I picked up at a college fair over 5 years ago. At the time I was not ready to commit to a cheek swab, right there in between classes lol. But I'm glad I never threw away that flyer! Definitely going to send in my cheek swab ASAP
I just had my swabs received and it’s killing me that it takes up to 6-8 weeks for them to process and type and match. I really, really hope I can be someone’s match as quickly as possible because I have what someone needs- why not give it? I wish I had known about this sooner. I would have donated so, so much sooner.
wait... they don’t do the hip thing? it’s just donating blood?! i always thought they went into your hip with like an ice pick like thingy... omg this changes a lot wow
They are 2 possibilities. You can either do it as a blood donation (they basically filter your blood and pick only stem cells) or have the same cells taken from your hip bone. Nowadays roughly 90% of donations are done through blood filtering, but some donors either request or require the hip procedure.
My jiggly butt just signed up and became a donor took 10 minutes was very easy waiting on my Q-tip swab to come in the mail. I have an a negative blood type I don't know if that means anything but I know that they really want my blood at the blood center. If you have herpes simplex 2 could you still be a donor? Not sure my friend has it and wants to know if she should sign up even though she has herpes but it's dormant she doesn't get breakouts or anything but if it saves a life I think it shouldn't matter as long as it's not a death threatening disease
Being a negative blood type usually means you can donate to more people. An o- can give to everyone, but an o+ can only give to all positive blood types. But it also depends whether your blood type is a, b, or o.
Thank Robin, Good Information. I need a Bone marrow transplant. I have a new appreciation for Donor participation. I also have a genuine appreciation for blood & platelet donors. I need blood & platelets weekly until we find a bone marrow match. Donor blood & platelets are keeping me alive.
I just found out that heart transplant patients can't donate bone marrow, so unfortunately I can't donate. But hopefully more people decide to do this!
One of my coworkers sisters actually died because they couldn’t get a bone marrow transplant for her. It was sad to watch it . Even worse, she had very young children to top it off during her final hours. She was the white, 2% of patients that have bad reactions to the painkillers. She ended up completely out of her mind and attacked her own children hours before she died, she had to be transferred to a hospice facility. It was horrible so now her children last memories of her above her completely out of her mind and saying in pain, I feel very badly for them and her. . I also watched my mother die a horrendous death, so I really big people to think about that if they can prevent it in either anyway.
I got the call that I was a match a couple weeks ago. I'm currently in the process of getting my health checked out. it would be amazing to be able to donate! please if you have the opportunity, register! and follow through!
So I registered a few years ago but moved and changed number and email and don't remember the logins for my original account so I just registered again under a new account. I hope they remove my old account and old contact info since they won't be able to contact me through it.
I’m 15 and I donated stem cells to my brother a few days ago, your gonna have to be prepared cause it really is a long and hard process, I had to stay in hospital overnight and stuff, good luck on your donation though, the actual procedure is very easy
I want to donate to this friend of mine who is sickle just to change his Genotype. I love him so much and wish to see him live long and healthy. I pray I’m his match 😊
Well, you get the option to do the toilet before the donation, most people including myself don’t drink/eat much before it so it never comes to that, it’s usually a 5hr process and can last 2 days (5hrs on each day)
I want to do this as many times as I can. This pain doesn't really intimidate me. I love embracing discomfort. It makes you grow. People might as well benefit from my ways of life. Is there anything that disqualifies you other than the obvious std and cancer stuff? I drink often but that's it. How long do I have to not drink before I qualify?
Sent in my swab kit just two days ago. Nothing on this blue planet will stop me from donating if I match someone and get the go ahead. If I get matched with someone, then to save their life is the reason I was put on this floating marble.
Uhhhh ... I didn't realize you weren't given anesthesia for this. I just got my kit today and I'm gonna send it off tomorrow but this is kinda scaring me now. I read somewhere they DID put you under. Does donating make you feel lightheaded at all? That's what I'm scared of the most, is getting faint and passing out. Does anyone also know if you can still donate if you're anemic? I'm anemic, and I've read you still can, but now I'm doubting that bc of the differing info on what I've read about the donation process.
It's awesome that people do this. Sadly there are alot of parents who have other kids for the sole purpose of giving existing children bone marrow. I think thats wrong. If the man said his back hurt think of how hurt a baby is after having bone marrow extracted out of them.
I think if they had a child for that specific reason they would use the umbilical cord which wouldn't hurt anyone. As long as the parents raise that kid with as much love as other kids, it should be okay
I can recognize this. I learned that Im not a match with my siblings by accident. So if anything happens to them I cant help. But I might be able to help someone else some day.
Hi GMA my name is rudra and I suffering from PNH clone last 2 year in India ... Indian dr. Say America available pnh clone medicine.. Can u help me GMA
Just another reason to go to single payer. If I knew I would be taken care of if something went wrong, I wouldn’t hesitate. But things happen...if I don’t have health insurance, I’m not taking that chance
I just got called because I matched a patient, still in the early days. But im passionate about of saving a life. Ps i signed up 9 years ago and completely forgot I signed up lol

Costeno 714 hey man! My donation will be tommrow and uh, those injections were really bad to let u know, trust me they are so bad u will honestly see what I mean if u have to do it, I’ll let u know how everything goes tomorrow
Costeno 714 donation finished! Had to go in for a second day and that really sucked, stayed in hospital overnight and it was hard but the actual procedure itself isn’t too bad, u might get bored tho lol, afterwards it was perfectly alright and time of writing this, I just got back from the donation and I’m very tired lol, good luck if u are considering this! It’s quite annoying but ain’t that bad
They have the medical guidelines on bethematch.org. As far as I can tell, the only form of anemia that would make you ineligible is aplastic anemia. And get on some vitamin D supplements lmaoo.
Frank Herrera It's no longer as common to do a bone marrow transfer (which involves an injection under anesthesia on your pelvic bone). Instead, almost all donations these days are direct stem cell transplants as explained here. Risks/side effects are minimal with this current method, and you would be helping save a life!
Do this right now. Through Be the Match. Covid has changed the process a bit. I will say the side effects are discomforting but it's worth it to help someone.

To all the True Heroes who Donate Bone Marrow, Real Heros by any standard!!! You are true life savers!!!!! Thank You!!!!
How often can you donate?
wait... they don’t do the hip thing? it’s just donating blood?! i always thought they went into your hip with like an ice pick like thingy... omg this changes a lot wow
They are 2 possibilities. You can either do it as a blood donation (they basically filter your blood and pick only stem cells) or have the same cells taken from your hip bone. Nowadays roughly 90% of donations are done through blood filtering, but some donors either request or require the hip procedure.
I just signed up to donate yesterday at Fort Drum.
Ur "friend"
Being a negative blood type usually means you can donate to more people. An o- can give to everyone, but an o+ can only give to all positive blood types. But it also depends whether your blood type is a, b, or o.
I just got my be a match swab to day in the mail. I proclaim god going to heal somebody. Thrue me amen.
Man this is amazing!!! ❤
I'm going through my collection process tomorrow for my dad. I'm ready to do it!
How'd it go? I scared to even send in the swab.
I’m supposed to receive my letter from the Be a Match yesterday but for some reason i didn’t get it in the mail
I just found out today my uncle needs one I’m 13 and I really wanna do this if he’s sister isn’t a match
I’m 15 and I donated stem cells to my brother a few days ago, your gonna have to be prepared cause it really is a long and hard process, I had to stay in hospital overnight and stuff, good luck on your donation though, the actual procedure is very easy
I’m on the registry for Be the Match, DKMS and the Gift of Life
Thank you for explaining the donation process. It's a lot less scary than I thought. Unfortunately my country won't accept donors over 30 :(
I want to donate to this friend of mine who is sickle just to change his Genotype. I love him so much and wish to see him live long and healthy. I pray I’m his match 😊
Guys give give give there is no better feeling in life but giving
I signed up to be a donor and waiting for my kit !!
crying.
Is it done in sessions or 8 hours at a stretch ? I mean what if you have to go to the toilet in between the donation ?
Well, you get the option to do the toilet before the donation, most people including myself don’t drink/eat much before it so it never comes to that, it’s usually a 5hr process and can last 2 days (5hrs on each day)
@@doomerists thanks for the clarification , hopefully once pandemic is over and it's safe , would definitely consider bone marrow donation.
Would the side effects go away after the donation? Are there any long term side effects to this?
Side effects do go away with in a week after donation
No long term side effects
I have been a donor 2 times and both times have gone smoothly 😊
@@Jessica-jb3zd Thank you so much for sharing your experience
what short term side effects did you experience?
Sent in my swab kit just two days ago. Nothing on this blue planet will stop me from donating if I match someone and get the go ahead. If I get matched with someone, then to save their life is the reason I was put on this floating marble.
I also want to donate , how to register ?
They don’t put u asleep anymore that was the old way
I think ur supposed to take some iron pills too
I’m in the process of becoming a donor I need to get my kit first, but I’m so excited! 😆
pay donor good money will solve the crisis, doctors get paid very high amount for operations , why is it a ethical issue when donor gets paid
I registered in 2015 and just got matched. Anyway two shots a day is too much I’ll just go through anesthesia and have them collect through spine
I just got ask to do this can't wait to do it
FYI you have to be between 18 & 40 to join the registry.
Thanks a lot for uploading it
It's awesome that people do this.
I pray I am chosen. To be able to help someone is the greatest gift you can give someone.
how much blood do they collect? takes two days?
I’ve never heard about this until now
I'm was a bone marrow years ago where a 3 yrs old and I was in surgery marrow years ago and it wasn't to bad. He now adult.
I wouldn’t mind all those injections and minor side effects if That means I could give life to someone
How did donate in 6 weeks ?
Just another reason to go to single payer. If I knew I would be taken care of if something went wrong, I wouldn’t hesitate. But things happen...if I don’t have health insurance, I’m not taking that chance
I just got called because I matched a patient, still in the early days. But im passionate about of saving a life. Ps i signed up 9 years ago and completely forgot I signed up lol
Gonna be donating soon to my brother who has lymphoma,
anyone who’s done it via blood, how was your experience, I’m kind of worried about it
How was it?
Costeno 714 happening around Tuesday from now, had to be pushed back a bit but it’s been scheduled for next week, whenever it’s done I’ll let you know how it was!
Costeno 714 uh so dude, I’m on g csf injections currently (2nd dose tommorrow) and honestly I’m telling u how it is.
They really suck, I’m 15 keep in mind and idk if that’s a factor as to why I have problems with them but they honestly hurt so much and I have a headache/shivers/but of sickness feeling at the time of writing this, I hope it’s all a dream, this isn’t to scare you but they hurt so much and I just want it to end honestly, will keep u updated when all is finished
Just requested my Be the match kit to join. I've donated blood plenty of times before and this is uncharted territory for me.
I just like to know how this done in case I choose to become a donor
Robin, I was only borned with one Kidney. Will that keep me from being a bone marrow doner?
I been wanting to but dont know how to sign up
Cameron sikes make an account on be the match and they’ll walk you through it
Would being anemic with low vitamin D count disqualify my application ?
They have the medical guidelines on bethematch.org. As far as I can tell, the only form of anemia that would make you ineligible is aplastic anemia. And get on some vitamin D supplements lmaoo.
I had low iron and vitamin D and I still donated to my brother, aslong as your on supplements (prescribed) you’ll be fine
Can i ask help regarding bone marrow transplant.
So how do I donate
That’s it? What happened to the drill to the leg and the excruciating pain as they extract bone marrow? Some one educate me please
Frank Herrera It's no longer as common to do a bone marrow transfer (which involves an injection under anesthesia on your pelvic bone). Instead, almost all donations these days are direct stem cell transplants as explained here. Risks/side effects are minimal with this current method, and you would be helping save a life!
Ava G thank you!
I m gonig to donate my brother. Plz pray 4 him
Update?
Can you donate bone marrow more than once?
I had to Google this question myself and apparently you can. 😊
Do this right now. Through Be the Match. Covid has changed the process a bit. I will say the side effects are discomforting but it's worth it to help someone.
What are the side effects? Is it just soreness and lethargy for a couple days?
Robin is amazing!
I thought they took the bone marrow from your spine. I guess I was wrong
I want to sign up to be a bone marrow donor, but I don't know how. Anyone know a way?
You go can go to bethematch.com and register there.
bethematch.org sorry
Bethematch.org
Took me about 5 minutes to sign up and the swabs came in a week. Hope you sign up!
Bexy Rae I actually already signed up that same day, and have recieved and sent out the swab kit! I am now patiently waiting for my donor ID card.
SETAREX WOLF
Yay! I'm waiting for mine too
