Selling to friends is doing you no favours chops . you need to treat them like any other customer and tell them 6 months is the limit of your liability . Like the content every day, keep it up 👍
I used to run a business (recently retired). At first I used to be soft touch, especially for family and friends. Then I had my fingers burnt by a family member. It always comes back to bite you. You are trying to run a business and make a living. You have to treat people including family the same in business transactions. If they don’t understand then it’s their problem . It always somehow becomes your fault if it goes pear shaped.
When I worked at a main dealer I was limited on how many of the trade ins I was allowed to buy; they said I wasn't allowed to run a 'business'. When my brother divorced his wife she was without a car and so I used my 'allocation' to get her a very nice, if boring, runabout, serviced it and did all the small jobs and MOT. She moaned about it non stop and sold it soon afterwards. My brother certainly made a good call with her.
You should be proud of your achievement.that you sell over 200 cars a year and your re-call rate is 5% .but also you are willing to help anyone even if the car is nearly a year since sale . It proves you practice what you preach .I wouldn't hesitate purchasing a car from you James. And the new format is bang on.thank you for all the updates wether good.or bad .
Your business model is great and it’s working for you, I don’t know how many other car sales operate in your catchment area but I know from experience how valuable it is to build a good reputation, keep doing what you do and you’ll always have repeat customers through recommendations 👍🏻
Hi James I me and your costumer of the month have something in common lol. When I bought my c max from a dealer I noticed that the windscreen washers weren't working no water coming going to the windscreen. I decided to do my research online and soon found a common problem it was quite an easy fix I just had to remove the washer bottle attached inside the front wing then clean out the filter at the pump which was blocked. The washers worked straight away so no need to hassle the dealer it's always nice when working on cars and you get something working again 😉. 🏴🏴
I remember seeing a case somewhere it was a 'sold as seen' type, buyer had agreed to do the necessary work & no come backs. Realised it was beyond him so went back to the garage, whilst the judge had sympathy for the garage he had no option but to find against them, they simply couldn't get out of it however honourable in the first place.
Gas Guy's car wants a heat camera to the cylinders to see if it's over fuelling, I suspect a drippy injector on that one - there is never any beef for being fair and nice it's just when people turn around and take the P out of it 👍
Now I'd be the guy which goes for that type of discount deal, you can't expect every little small petty problem to be solved for you, unless you want to buy really young motors with top notch warranties.
In future mate, no friends, no picky crazy locals, 1 mths warranty on cheapies, 3 mths on better stuff, stop buying everything that's offered to you, even when you know they're c*ap engines or transmission, oh and buy a compression gauge (!)
Official tolerance is about 10 %bud on compression so if it's a bit down it's not too bad, should have made a note of compressions after previous (semi) rebuild.
RE: Intro. Unless you regularly watch the channel. You bet Chops. Love the trade sagas. Which all in trade suffer whatever level we sell at. And have to work out/through. Mental job. If we didn’t love it we’d just cry every week !!!!! Beats us with a right stick these used cars.
Trouble is with friends is a cheap price at the start then it's moans for years, I've totally stopped local sales or friends, couldn't even go to the supermarket without someone pulling me for some car related moan, autotrader now for everything and hopefully a 100 miles away.
Hi James that bloody 65 Cambridge estate has failed mot on welding. I know I got it in 75, but rust was in it at point of sale. Quoted £8000 to repair. When can you send money?
I think james if that deal exceeded that negotiated discount your customer would challenge you in court under the cosumer rights , remember all these laws are minefields of grey areas ,all judges can interpret the law in a different direction??!! But worth checking this type of deal out ,but you must enquire to at least 3 different solicitors to find a cross party opinion .
If you don’t replace gaskets etc when an engine has come apart you always risk future issues. Assume the fault is the same cylinder as before can’t remember if you mentioned it? Also you need to look at usage. If she’s done 10k in 11 months it’s more than likely a new issue as you fixed the previous one. Your friend should be paying it himself or at contributing for how long it’s been
I had a shop, had being the operative word and my friend ran it for me, worst mistake of my life really was I’ve now lost 140k never again will I ever have a friend work for me as they don’t listen at all 😔
Over fuel (rich) wouldnt burn a valve out, it would need to be lean to burn it, excess fuel tho bud would cause bore ware as it'll wash the oil off that pot, I bet when you did it last time it wasn't sorted, ie up to proper sec on compression and a bit more use has worn it a bit more, if it's say 130 psi but others are 180 psi it'll still combust the fuel, it's only when you get down to say 90 psi it won't combust it, another point is that if the ecu detects a cylinder imbalance it will switch that cylinder off, so unburnt fuel isn't going thru the cat. The dead easy way to check is a teaspoon off oil in the cylinder, if compression reading goes up, it's bore ware, if no difference it's the valve, if it's bore your as well getting a used engine tbh, if it runs half OK with a new plug come to some arrangement with your mate and sell it on before it gets worse, if it won't fire on that pot, we'll it's a big strip down or getting very little as a 3 cylinder, thank me later mate, ha, ha.
Yes, this. In the late '80's drove an XJ12 HE back from London to Yorkshire on 11 cylinders. ( just a plug lead not pushed on properly). 250 miles of bore wash. It didn't totally wreck it but it always had a bit of piston slap when it was cold on that cylinder.
As a buyer of many used cars , and even if ' right ' was on my side , i could,nt be arsed chasing dealers and making endless calls etc...lifes too short ,, get rid and buy another car...even from the same guy....shit hsppens
There is some evidence on older Smart car and BMW Mini engines that burnt exhaust valves (which in turn cause low compression and therefore a misfire) can be caused by stuck in oil control rings which allow engine oil to get into the upper cylinder, where it is burnt along with the fuel. It appears that oil burns at a higher temperature than petrol and thus burns out the valve. So replacing the burnt valve last time only fixed the immediate problem not the primary cause. One sign of this being a problem is excessive oil consumption. I don't know if this this applies to the GDI engine that you are talking about, perhaps your mechanics know moore about this !!
When I buy a car I buy it that's it, no moans, no complaining mths later,as a friend I wouldn't put you in that position mate, it's cars, it's how they are, as I said it's a shame you didn't have the compression readings from mths ago.
That GDi is some story Chops. A lot pre sale woes work through. . I’d have thought GDi way go over a tricksy diesel. Not in this case. Sorry to hear about this one. Hyundai kia GDI engine's suffer carbon fouling on the valves as directed injection doesn't allow the fuel to run over the valves cleaning carbon away stopping the valves seating correctly causing valve damage and compression loss 🤔 it's a design fault the Japanese worked this out year's ago and toyota lexus at least double up the injectors one direct and one indirect to pass some fuel passed the valves via the manifold 🫡 hope you can get it sorted your a top bloke a dying breed in used car sales 😉 👍 hyundai kia engine failures are more common than people realise and dealers fight with you tooth and nail to do repairs as cheap as possible i know this after getting burned by the long warranty on their vehicles and living at the dealers for 4 years 😤 tread carefully with them your to good a guy to have the hassle 👍 take care buddy
Can't you check the injectors first? The valve may not be gone and you will have checked for no reason. If the injectors are faulty you can proceed with confidence?
@@ChopsGarage You are the expert, Chops. I was just thinking that if the injectors were OK it may not be a faulty valve. If the plugs crack, cylinder will be bore washed, put a very small amount of oil in cylinder, run for a few miles and re check compression.
