- An adjustable box joint jig that lets you cut from 1/8 to 3/4-inch wide box joints down to 1/1000th of an inch. This is my fourth iteration of this jig but I finally have it trimmed down to just what you need for accurate, repeatable box joints. This should be the last box joint jig you ever have to make.

I built an adjustable box joint jig several years ago, following Lanny Shaughnessy (okala, FL) that had matching screws in two places. It worked perfectly the first time I used it. But the second time, I couldn't remember which way to adjust the screws. The reasoning to proceed was that there were only two directions to adjust. By the time I quit trying, I had every combination (or at least I thought I did) and none of them worked. This jig, with one adjustment is easy enough to measure and know whether to make the pin larger or smaller. Further, one key for any size joint is new. Every other box joint jig insists that the key has to change with the joint size. You have thought this through well enough and explained it well enough that I think I now understand it as well. Thank you!! Further, you have addressed the problem that no one except William Ng has addressed. All the other jigs make the pin the same width of the cut. They end the video showing how well the joint fits together, and never put any glue on and try to assemble. You can't do it! The .004 narrower pin than slot is exactly what William Ng Recommends. I've watched Ng build his box jig several times, but didn't come away with the understanding that I have from yours. I've been subscribed to your channel for some time and gave this one a like. Wish I could give you 100 likes! Yes 45 min is a long video, but it was well worth it to me. Well done!!!
The length was perfect. You do a good job of walking through your thought process, including the important points without jumbling it up with unnecessary details. You show us every step of the way… except sanding. Thanks. We all know sanding sux 😜 but is a necessary evil.
What Jimmy said below, the best and easiest to understand video I've seen on this topic, I especially like the versatility you designed into it.
My tip for jig runners: I use hardwood for my mitre slot runners but make them adjustable. I start with stock that is just a tiny bit loose in the slot. Then I cut two lengthwise slots at either end about an inch or so long and about 1/3 of the width from the SAME EDGE with a flush cut saw. Clamp the runner in a vise and drill a pilot hole for a #4 or #6 wood screw then clamp the edge of the runner in such a way as to close the flush cut kerf, then run the screw in to cut the threads and countersink the hole. Now wind the screw in until the head of the wood screw contacts the counter sink. The runners must be oriented so that they are on the side left side of the mitre slot (for left hand tilting saws, reverse for right hand). Once the runners have been installed in the normal fashion, I use the screw to snug the fit. Keeping the adjustment screw on the left side of the runner allows adjustment to push the runner up firm on the reference (right) side of the miter slots. The reference side is the side you use to dial in the parallelism of the blade and fence. Works like a charm, my sleds remain square and I can adjust for seasonal expansion as well as wear. Sorry this is a little long...

This is the best video for a jig that I have ever seen! You are so thorough and clear! I retired 2 years ago and was always interested in wood working and now have the time to learn. I only have UA-cam as an educator. I purchased many plans but the videos that go with them show off the features instead of showing how and why to do each step. I watched nearly all of the box joint jig videos on UA-cam before stumbling upon yours. It made good sense to me, so yours is the one I built. It worked excellently right away, even with my chintzy dado stack. I appreciate your clear and calculated method of teaching. I watch UA-cam woodworking videos in my shop for entertainment regularly. Small detail: The 2 adjustment stop screws might be better placed inline with the other adjustment screws to keep everything in a single axis.
Thanks you for the kind words. On my original designs they were inline, but I figured it might be a little difficult for people to take the measurement people. It's a little harder to see down there.

Great video! Thanks for putting it together. I must admit, though, that I am feeling pretty inept tonight. No fault of yours, Jody. It's all on me. You see, I've watched this video in it's entirety, at least 8 or 10 times. I took notes and made paper drawings. I *thought* that I had it down to a science.... So out to the garage I go. High steppin' and feeling confident that Jody taught me something new and useful. I proceed to fire up the heater in the workshop due it being only around 15 degrees outdoors here in southern Indiana at the moment. I pieced together what scraps I had on hand to work with. I proceeded to put this entire jig together and somehow screwed something up in the process when making my initial cuts into the base plate when trying to get the "pin" lined up. I dunno what happened. All I can tell you is that I was more frustrated than a doggone mosquito in a mannequin factory before it was over. I ended up removing all of the hardware, relinquishing the project to the clutches of the campfire pit, hung my head in shame and wandering back indoors to watch this video a few more times until I could figure out what went wrong and what I need to do to get the next attempt done correctly. I will not quit! Sometimes, being a "newbie" is very frustrating. The seasoned "pro's" make things look so easy on camera. Jody, thanks again for taking the time to film, edit and share your knowledge. It is more appreciated than your probably realize. Folks like me probably help pump the algorithm of your videos just by having to watch it so many times in the process of attempting to duplicate your shared idea, :-)
EDIT: After watching this video a few more times, I was able to figure out what I did wrong on my first attempt. I then started over from scratch and after a few hours I am now successfully making 1/4" through 3/4" box joints! Keep in mind that I also had never tried using a dado blade setup before, so that was tossed into the mix of the learning process. Now I need to gather up some lumber so that I can start churning out some new bee hive boxes before spring gets here. Thanks again Jody! :-)

the thing that has intimidated me from building a box joint jig was understanding how to set it up and use it accurately. Store bought jigs don't solve this, as you still need to understand how to adjust and use it. I'll give this one a shot, because you did such a great job making this simple to build, and simple to adjust and use. I may use an old set of brass set up gauges for a key, as I've upgraded from my old ones.
GREAT video! Step by step build & starting with same length boards made all the difference to me. i have some medical limitations but have been trying to return to building. i wanted to make my husband a watch tray w/box joints.
After 2 months of watching way too many jig videos i was exhausted and less than motivated. After your video last week i got up grabbed a 5 foot piece of 4" poplar i already had and a few minutes and only 3 cuts later i was half way done. i don't use the table saw these days but this jig worked great on the router table with next no modification.

Have never made a box joint jig but I am impressed that more and more we see the use of the calipers in woodworking. In my mind that is great. Will try this next week.
Took me a couple hours but I was able to make two versions for different thickness dado setups that I typically use (1/2” and 3/4” plywood)! Great video and thanks for adding to the community!

After making the box joint jig (it was as easy as it appeared), I made my first box. It was 7 inches square, 24 inches tall and used 1/4 inch (nominal) plywood. I used a 3/4 inch dado, so it had 16 pins and 16 sockets per corner. Thanks to your ingenious method of making fine adjustments, the pins and sockets fit together perfectly. And, possibly because I clamped all 4 of the sides together while I cut the fingers and grooves, the 16th pin fit as perfectly as the first one did. For being my first box, I was amazed.
My only regret pertains to the 1/4" dado groove for the bottom of the box. I registered off of the end of the board (as I usually do). But I should have registered off of the first socket. The 4 grooves would have lined up better and the bottom piece would have fit better. Nevertheless, after some glue (sparingly) and elastic bands and as many clamps as I owned, I had a nice looking box custom made to my needs. I'm not sure why, but it ended up with 8 degrees of spiral from bottom to top. Interesting, but not a problem since the intended content is a cylinder.

I love this design. I think I just found my next fixture build. Been wanting to build a box joint jig for a while now. This looks simple and cheap to build. But super accurate. Being a cnc metal working operator I can’t stop myself from making everything within a few thousands when I’m in my wood shop.

Today I tackled box joints on my table saw with a different plan. It worked but I felt there must be a way to make it work with different sized dados. And then I saw your design. I'm sold. Wonderful! Thank you.

So I watched the video about 5 times and took most of Saturday to build it. little trouble with the pin but it was my fault. I finally got it to sink in and this is the greatest easy to use and incredibly accurate box joint jig ever. thanks Jodee you rock and are at the top of my UTube watch list.
I really appreciate your thoroughness in all your videos. You make it possible for a guy like me who loves the craft but only has time to do things occasionally and with no prior experience. I’ve followed the video super closely, bought the plans and was able to build a solid version of this jig that I finally feel confident in to cut some nice box joints. I had been so frustrated using other jigs and tips I’ve come across that just don’t explain it quite like you do. Thank you for breaking down the whole 4/1000” suggestion like you did. I heard it first from William Ng but it didn’t click other than it being a rule. After watching your video about 6 times and making a ton of mistakes I finally get it. Out of "all" of the box joint videos, you are the only one to answer that age old question that has plagued mankind! 'Which came first? The chicken or the egg?' Seriously though. How should I dimension my material for the box? For people that make lap joints, be it dowels, nails or screwed boxes. It's really easy to overthink the problem. Thanks for your video. This jig isn't over engineered.
I just built this jig and it is awesome. Took a little adjusting, but using screws and feeler guage lets you dial it right in. Thanks for sharing, I'm a huge fan.
All other box joint jig videos should be deleted. This is the simplest and most versatile jig. This video covers it all. Very nice work!

Nice jig. Lately I’ve been using roll pins to attach my runners to the base of my table saw sleds.
Lay the runners in their tracks with pennies or washers, position the base on top, squared to the fence. Then drill thru (both) with 1/8” for the roll pins, one at each end of each runner.
If you want to add glue, you can mark them for position and take them off and put them right back on.
Very nice jig, well thought out. I made a very similar jig using a permanent 1/2” x 1/2” key made out of brass to match the width of a dedicated router bit. My 2” backer board is supported by 4 cleats on a deeper base board. My jig is big and clumsy compared to yours, but I make a lot of large hope chests so it needs to be hefty. My jig is adjustable by a screw insert in the 2” thick stationary small piece, pushing sideways on a solid insetted screw in the larger 2” thick adjustable piece. You’ve reminded me that I can expand the jig to cut larger than 1/2” spacing (with a backer board). Great video! I’ve purchased a t-track and related toggle clamps, but haven’t installed them yet. This is way too much fun!

Love the use of the feeler gauge, you could also cut the extra locator pin in two and CA glue it together offset then put it down the kerf in the jig and slide the locator pin against it, not sure how to make that sound as simple as it is in my head.

I cant believe how time flies. I watched a 40+min video in its entirety.
I don't comment often but I've never seen a video that's covered ALL of the concerns I've had with other jigs, especially the changes in material thickness (and therefore blade height) on the same jig that isn't a throwaway, temporary fixture. This has resulted in blowout on the back of each finger (especially with plywood) for me in the past and your solution here perfectly solves for that with the masonite. Excellent, excellent video.
I guess the only thing, in thinking about this more, is the height of the "key." If I want to use this jig with thinner material than half inch plywood, the blade would be lower and the fingers would be shorter and they would rock on the pin unless it was cut down. I wonder if there is an issue with having the key be much shorter since you're just sliding over until you stop against it and then making the next cut.

Very good tutorial. Thank you. Just in time for my workbench drawer. Just a note about the jig parts kit: I bought the one recommended, but through Amazon. The screw inserts not only were not able to be installed by hex key (no provision for a hex key), but also did not have slots for a screw driver! Also, the fittings were way more beefy than usual and needed an oversized hole, and I don’t believe they are made of brass. I think the company opted for a more “economical” supplier of the fittings.) but...we’re all good.
Very easy to follow you AND understand your reasoning. Thank You The only difference I will go with a metal guide pin inset into the base of the moving fence that will be an eighth inch thick. I have a mill and will be able to fabricate it for rigidity and durability.

Thanks for a very comprehensive video. I don't have a table saw, but I can see that this would probably work on a router table as well. I wonder... if I made a dovetail-shape key, I might be able to do small dovetails as well. Might be worth trying. But probably need separate jigs for tails and pins.
