    This game isn't about getting someone GOOD at guitar. It's about slowly allowing the individual to develop patience, discipline and a genuine interest in the instrument which is by far the hardest step to take.

    I like that it's obvious to anyone that plays the guitar that this guy hasn't developed that much really at all in 60 days but he's improved and more importantly, he's feeling confident. I'm willing to bet if someone REALLY took 60 days and spent 8 hours a day on guitar with this game/program (as well as looking up youtube videos for technique) you'd be amazed at how much they learned.

    I first saw this video and all the other 60 Day Challenge Rocksmith stuff last year mid September. I had a guitar that I never learned to play sitting in my house for 20 human years (I'm 36). I bought Rocksmith and played everyday for just 15-30 minutes for 60 days and then re-watched the videos and realized I was on the same skill level as all the people in them. Now just after five months I am playing about 1-2 hours a day. Don't dismiss Rocksmith as a valid teaching tool because it is a game. Six months ago all I could play was an open E chord, now I can actually play guitar and bass guitar enough to impress friends and family.

    Rocksmith is just meant to be the beginning of your journey. Guitar and bass are NOT fun instruments to start learning, finger placement, learning theory, training your ears, building up the muscle memory, these things are neither easy nor fun to do. But by teaching you songs and not chords or scales Rocksmith keeps your interest by letting you put a bunch of notes together, in time with a tune you like. Once you get past the barrier of not being able to do a thing on guitar you'll actually be motivated to continue learning.

      +XBlueM0ndayX Yeah no to mention the bitches that quit over burning finger tips. That goes away after about 3 days. Depending on how long you play. Even calloused tips can get uncomfortable after 3-5 hours of playing. Part of the journey. I'm self taught, not bad, not amazing, I wish I took music classes in school. There are free courses on Coursera. com or net through Berkeley, from beginner guitar to advanced theory, to song writing ect. I should look into those. Even if all I get is a certificate that I need to print out myself. At least I'll know more than just basic theory.

    • @alvarg
      @alvarg 8 років тому +6

      +XBlueM0ndayX Yep, but you'll continue learning with any mistakes in your playing style which is now drilled in as you haven't learn't proper techniques, your ears won't be trained very well as your so used to using your eyes to see whats next to play instead of listening for transitions in music, muscle memory will be there for some songs but due to potential faults in the technique it won't help much for different songs and you'll wonder why your not progressing and why they seem so impossible to learn, im not saying rocksmith is bad idea, i'm just warning anyone that there is usually downsides when you try and shortcut learning an instrument.

    • @alvarg
      @alvarg 8 років тому +2

      +MaynardOwns the only type of training i recommend is in person, so an instructor can see your level, your technique and see if there's anything that you're doing wrong, or at least that needs improvement, it could be something simple that looks completely normal but is in fact hindering your progression or making things harder for you. i don't know how long you been playing but i'm happy to give you tips that might help you if your interested.

(about a year ago) And still plays it from time to time because he's to busy with the band he's in. I should say pick it up and don't forget to pick up dlc to get more veriaty. Also , the pc version is "better" cause of more acces to dlc & custom songs (free) from customsforge.com/ (need to make an account for it). Which gives you the learn all your beloved songs. Good luck.

    For all those who say this game won't teach you how to really play guitar...
    Yes, it won't teach you how to play any song just by looking at notes or so but it gives you the important push and gives you the most important lessons... Then you're able to learn how to play almost any song in just few days...

    • @MsGudmundur
      @MsGudmundur 9 років тому +1

      Yeah but where is the challenge in that? The BEST way to become a good guitarist is simply by listening the songs out. That way, when you´ve been doing it for a while, you´ll be able to learn almost any song in about 5 minutes, simply by listening to it ;)

    • @NatiiixLP

    My girlfriend bought me a full guitar starter kit for my birthday this year after a few years of saying I always wanted one. I spent an hour learning the basics of tab and then two hours trying to plink out "House of the Rising Sun"'s first little chorus.
    After three hours I could hit the notes with a solid twenty seconds in between them and nothing more.
    I didn't know the basics of guitar. I didn't know the fundamentals. I didn't know if I was even holding the pick right let alone how to go from one note to the other! Then I used a gift card I had and bought Rocksmith.
    Now I can actually play a little bit of it after a week! I am now supplementing a bit of what I have practiced from Rocksmith and using it with Tab to learn other songs! I went from a too-high-strap off-tune single-note moron to playing a few actual chords.
    Rocksmith teaches you the basic of playing a guitar paired with your own desire to learn. It gives you confidence to try new things. It gives you better handling and reflexes to play chords and do hammer on and pull offs. Most importantly it encourages you with the patience that only software could provide.
    If you pair this up with your own learning (be it by ear or by reading tab) you WILL learn how to play guitar.

It won't make you a pro and it won't teach you absolutely everything, but it will make sure that if you see a guitar, then you can play it. I can say I learned to play E-bass from Rocksmith 2014.
    In my state today as a bass rookie, who is playing Rocksmith 2014 for about 5months now, I'm 100% aware of the fact that to archive what I have archived with Rocksmith I would have spent at least 2 years on UA-cam with the same level of dedication. But there is one point to it... Rocksmith is a game... it entertains you and doesn't frustrate you. You learn because it's fun. This point alone makes it the very best learning tool for beginners out there.
    I can play 3 songs straight out of my head and I can play some epic riffs from top bands like Metallica.
    I fully recommend it.

    When I started playing Rocksmith (bass), I couldn't play for more than an hour, 2 tops, in the first couple of months, as the skin on my fingers hadn't hardened enough.
    After that hour or 2 it became physically painful to play. I assume it's similar for others who haven't played the guitar.
    I played 99.99% songs though. I've been playing Rock Band for a few years, expert bass (many 100%).
    Eventually I started on the technique challenges on Rocksmith, got all but 3 goldstarred atm.

      +Pineapple Yeah I've been playing for about 10 years and never got better than learning songs from internet tabs, Tool songs from ear. Never took the time to practice scales and all the shit that it takes to become a really good guitar player. Video games took over my life I stopped playing for a LONG time. Bought the original one from a friend so I can play guitar while getting achievements. It pretty much forced me to practice all while getting achievements. Some songs taught me really awesome chords I would have never took the time to have learned other wise. Finally took the time to practice scales. Its really annoying at first. I knew a bunch of the songs in the beginning of the game and it started me off WAY too slow. I was playing chords when they wanted me to play single notes, playing notes I knew were there that they didn't want me to play so it advanced me pretty quickly. And it takes a while to get used to the display, paying attention to that and playing at the same time makes you want to lose your mind. I just wish I never sold my Gibson Les Paul Custom Classic Silverburst. Or my Dean From Hell for drug money. I'm using a shitty Ibanez Gio from like 98. Only problem is a spring on the bridge pickup fell out so I had to rig it until I change the strings. And dead notes on the high e 19 and 21 frets, and the 21st on the low E. Which really sucks now that I'm learning hard ass leads. Clapton, some song boss by Chris Lee. Sweet Home Alabama, I know when their mastered I'm gonna need to play at least one of those notes in at least one of those songs. Anyway, it reignited my passion for guitar. I used to play for hours and hours when I was all fucked up. Then I stopped doing drugs and it seemed like something was lost when I played. So yeah get it.

    I bought Rock Smith only for the purpose of having fun and to see what it's all about. People who play it because they think it will make them a great guitar player are sadly mistaken. Other than the "lessons" you're not going to learn a whole lot of anything. You play songs over and over until you master them, but you know what the funny part about "mastering" a song is? Now you have to re-master them without the game telling you what to do and better yet you must learn how to use an amp first. I can learn a song in the same amount of time as I can on Rock Smith but the only difference is with Rock Smith you're only able to remember very little after you finish playing. Also, It's easy to think that you are learning quickly when you can barely hear the sound that your guitar is making over all of the other instruments and the authentic tone just makes you feel like you're doing even that much better when in reality you still suck at guitar.

      The only thing that will make you great at guitar is years of dedicated practice, continually expanding upon your base of knowledge by learning and mastering new techniques and continually challenging yourself to play better than you did the day before. Rocksmith is just one of many options for someone who is just getting into guitar to learn the fundamentals and build up their hands and muscle memory, and it's not any worse than teaching yourself to play guitar. No matter what you're using or who is teaching you, if you don't take it upon yourself to make sure you are learning proper technique and putting in enough time practicing, you're never going to be a great guitar player.

      Jonathan Mckiddy I agree with most of what you just said but I still think that Rocksmith is a pointless way of learning how to play the guitar. Any guitar lesson that a novice, average, or even advanced player would ever need are all right here on UA-cam. MartySongz is a great example, he has a video for almost anything you could imagine and the best part about is that it's free. He even takes the time to give in-depth analysis, finger placements, proper posture, techniques, suggestions, etc. Way more than RockSmith offers.

      I bought Rocksmith because I wanted just to learn the basics of guitar, while learning a few songs along the way. I still have to take lessons but because of Rocksmith I had a head start :D

      A lot of people are looking way to far into it. This game is obviously not THAT much for someone who's guitar playing is second nature... while no one agreed that playing rocksmith will make you a "great player"... I'm sure it will help you take a step up from hardly even holding it right. I agree on the volume thing you've said, but saying Rocksmith is a stupid way to learn guitar is just out there... I've learned sitting in a fold up chair with a bullshit amp and still suck... it's no different than bullshitting with notes and blah blah blah... it's just a fun non-serious way of learning simple songs.

      Your wrong dude. I have been playing guitar for 20 years and rocksmith helps me learn scales and speed. When you watch the screen and play you should also interpret what you are doing on the neck. You get to watching the screen at first to lead you in the right direction and then transition yourself to watching the neck instead of the tv. The trick is you learn with your ears not your eyes

    i cant understand how a learner can pick up a steel string guitar and have huge dedication and not get bleeding fingers after a couple weeks or even a few days..... when i first started after 3 months the nerve endings in my fingers were nearly poking out! Not one person has complained about the pain... makes me think its definatly staged.. but yes what ever floats your boat.. what ever makes you keep playing.. if its this game.. so be it... i think it actually looks quite fun.. if its to impress people ..or to fill in time.. or maybe u even love music and want to make some sounds yourself...you definatly need solid basic skills to proceed there.. you cant start at the top.. youl have to turn around eventually..

    This may help you learn guitar fast, but it's not the best way to learn (which would be by yourself, best way to learn and perfect any instrument, but getting help later on helps)

    • @ihatethissitejkh
      @ihatethissitejkh 10 років тому +17

      The best way to learn is whatever way keeps you practicing on a daily basis. Rocksmith makes it super fun and in my experience has been *way* more rewarding than practicing alone. I tried practicing by myself for years and it just sucked, I'd never stick with it. Been really liking Rocksmith so far though, can't see it getting old for a long time.

    • @ruvensama
      @ruvensama 10 років тому +1

      i don't know, from my own experience (and from many others who've played guitar and this game) is that learning by yourself was better altogether, and also a tad bit more fun (not to mention more challenging)

    • @ihatethissitejkh
      @ihatethissitejkh 10 років тому

      Again, it's whatever way keeps you practicing on a daily basis :) I believe that worked for you, but going it alone is not the optimal learning strategy we see for any learning or goal achievement in general. Many beginners will never make it through that phase if left to go it alone.

    I don't believe this will take you from zero to hero but it is great for practice. I've played Rocksmith 2013. You will learn to play some simple songs but without further instruction you might find difficulty building the proper form.
    For futher instructions try www.justinguitar.com/ (free website)
    With that said I havn't tried Rocksmith 2014, so I don't know if it has more to offer. If you own an electric guitar already then I highly recommend Rocksmith as a practice tool.

      Yeah. You choose when you start whether you want to play lead, rhythm or bass. Think you can also use a regular 6 string as a bass too if you dont have a bass guitar.

    If someone wants something similar for piano, Synthesia connects to a piano via Midi so you'll need a USB - Midi adapter, a nice Soundfont, some time to set it all up, and you'll good to go.
    I personally use CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth loaded with the HQ Orchestral Soundfont Collection off a Musescore forum post. As for actual songs I use random tracks out of a 130,000 MIDI pack (~3.5GB worth) of random songs, in there you can choose random Orchestral songs and improve that way ^.^

    The game has this minigames which are based on technics. For example, the typical spaceship shooting. If you want to shoot at a target, you need to play a chord to hit it, if you get it wrong, you miss. Just like that, there are lots of minigames for tremolo picking, bending, etc. Besides, you can practice a part in a song which the game recognizes it's difficult for you and you can go to this called the "Riff Repeater". It's kind of cool, I like it. I'd prefer a guitar teacher though...

  • @Fray789
    @Fray789 10 років тому

    If you want to progress really fast you need to play through the pain, this way your fingers(fingertips) will harden faster. It depends on the kind of pain, though and without a teacher or someone to help you and give you feedback it you may be better off playing until the pain starts as you did.

    I love to play video games and was thinking about getting either the upcoming Rockband or Guitar Hero. Then I realised why should a dish out that kind of money on a plastic toy when I could learn a real skill. I don't plan on joining a band, I just want to have a nice casual time learning songs I have listened to countless times before. I have never played guitar before so should I actually buy this or save my money for something else? I would prefer people who learned to play on Rocksmith but anyone is welcome for their opinions. Thank you!

    I need a legit answer from somebody that plays guitar or bass and have also used Rocksmith at some point. So is Rocksmith worth picking up if you want to learn enough about the bass to eventually create your own music? It seems like it's just meant to teach you how to cover songs. Does it properly show you scales, chords, techniques, etc? I want to be able to improvise and play the sounds in my head out on an actual bass. Will this help me get there?

    Epiphone is everywhere in anything related to Rocksmith. All the people in the '60 day challenges' all play Epiphones (Because epiphone sponsors rocksmith / product placement') Aswell that even the 100 riffs guy playing 100 riffs in the Rocksmith 2014 tracklist even had to use an epiphone, because otherwise if their was any other guitar beside Epiphone in a Rocksmith ad / premotional video that would be breaking Epiphones sponsor agreement
