I’m glad to see you reviewing some metal! I have the Blackened reissue from a few years ago and it sounds great. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this remaster. Great video as always
You made my day today Michael!! I'm a die-hard Metallica fan and this album was one of my first CD purchases as a teen. Now I also collect vinyl so when I heard Bob Ludwig mastered it, it was an instant no-brainer. Which you just confirmed! So stoked.
I got all the boxes from the beginning, they keep getting better and the black was no exception. Great work with music and collectibles. Their series of podcasts about the album that have been released weekly and a very necessary and great complement
The gem in this one for me is the year and a half out takes dvd. My only gripes are: I wish a dvd of the famous moscow show was included, and I wish there were pin ups of the pus head art work (sad but true, burning flower, executioner, don't tread on me) instead of teh magazine covers. I am guessing Binge and purge is next, and I would not be surprised if load and reload are in the same box set together.
That is a whole lot of Metallica!! I bet if someone's a die-hard fan this is going to be absolutely amazing for them, but for me I just stick with the single album. Thank you so much for showing us and breaking it down great presentation 🎸⚡
These remaster box sets are great. Its like here is the album...and EVERYTHING about it. Its like each boxset is a yearbook for every era of Metallica.
I’m usually against 90s remasters because I don’t like the sound changing, but after comparing the 90s version to the newly remastered version I’m shocked to say the newer version is improved immensely. It sounds so crisp and clear. I love it.
I own an orginal UK pressing since 1991 and it sounds amazing and also has great separation of the instruments. By the way, the was not originally isssue as a gatefold, so I guess they wanted to faithfully reproduce it in this boxset.
I don’t have any metal record in my collection. But i preordered this one. Because i like it so much as a young boy. I had a cassette and listened it nonstop. Sound is very good. No need to search for an original in my opinion. 1991 was an incredible year. So much unbelievably good albums. This could be a long video. Just talking about 1991.
The boxes are expansive but what you get as Metallica fan is amazing and let's you really dig into the making process and following tour. I only missed the Master box which is now too expansive bt love these boxes.
Looks like a bad azz set. I'll likely get it as a birthday present next month. The band chose the number 2 pressing plant in the world to press this fabulous remaster. Micheal does the remastered record have sybilance on Nothing Else Matters i know all previous pressings on vinyl have that little issue. I grew up listening to this album so it's very special for me. Great video!
I was not thinking of getting the deluxe box set, but now I'm thinking about it. Maybe I'll keep the 2 LPs. In any case, this release is a proof that they can make very famous albums in the right way (in terms of sound quality).
Sorry, I commented before I played the video (bad habit)! I deleted that one! Fantastic release by metallica! Most metallica and heavy metal fans don't like it, but I love it!
A great review: lots of stuff in that boxed set, looks like buyers will get their money's worth! I have the 45-RPM version of the Black Album. Have you heard that version,. Michael? I'd be curious to know how it compares with the version in this set.
I didn’t have any plans to get this even though I like the album week enough, until I saw it was cut by Bob Ludwig. Became a no-brained after that. Nice review.
That is NOT cut bei BL. he did the digital version and this is cut bei Chris Bellman, same as the 2015 Edition. Fist Press ist STERLING SOUND Cut and the 1st press does sound amazing.
Any comparison between earlier pressings? I have the 2015 and had decided not to replace it since Chris Bellman cut the lacquers for both… until I watched your review. Now I’m kind of salivating.
Good to know that this turned out well. I remember feeling similar regarding the U2 Box set. I thought here's one of the biggest bands in the world and how do they put out something so flat?
Great channel keep the posts coming. I have been following your storage ideas for vinyl. When you open a box set and cover the vinyls in storage plastic solutions do you keep the vinyls back in the box for shelf storage? or keep them outside to make accessing them easier? BTW also if you don't mind me asking do you by analogue production box sets direct from acoustic sounds? I love these but hard to get hold of . Thanks
Interested Review, thanks! Do you own the Boxsets of the first four Metallica records? Thinking about to get them, but i heard the Sound of the Vinyl isn't that great....
I know that now you are going to secretly obtain a gorgeous CD (Multi disc - CD, SACD, DVD-A & Blu-ray capable?) player. Do not be ashamed - embrace the ones and zeros! LOL.
I have the black marble wal mart exclusive version which is just a re pressing of the Bellman cut as far as I know. Isn’t the version in this box set the same Bellman one?
I don't like metal either, but I do like Metallica and the black album is a masterpiece. I was just going to stick to my old cd but now you made me doubt: should I buy the vinyl?
What are those outer sleeves for gatefolds that you are using? Do you clean every new record before first time listening to it? Sorry if this has been discussed already. Have not seen all your videos.
the big question is: 2015 and 2021 both mastered and cut for vinyl by Chris Bellman at BG Mastering and pressed at Pallas. Is this the same mastering and cut as 2015 version? Deadwax is a bit different, but not much. Can be the same stampers but they changed the deadwax a bit. Does anyone know more or has a decent set up to compare. thx
The 2021 cut is completely different from the 2015 both cut by CB but much different to my ear. The 2015 is cut louder and has more bass slam and feel at least through my Klipsch fortes.
Great presentation but definitely a pass -don’t need 10 plus live gigs! Too many better sets out in the market ! Yes this will sell out I won’t be picking it up!
Michael it’s a tempting set. I have just the remastered LP and I ordered the Blacklist CD. I would end up being completely burned out on Metallica if I even went halfway through all that. A discography maybe. One album of that much submersion would drown most of us. Looks cool just too much. Do you intend to listen to and view all the media? You may get more grey by the time you do! Ha! Thx. I appreciate your videos. Peace.
I think there's quite a bit of noise on the vinyl remaster when you listen closely. It's not audiophile, or Tone Poet etc. quality. Although the album was recorded analogue, this seems to be a digital remaster, especially for vinyl, with all the limitations when you do that. I don't get why you would do that when it was recorded in analogue.
Did you say.....wait......I HAD to have miss-heard.......nope........$52.....THOUSAND? Who in the F&%@ has.......wait.......5000 albums behind collector at $25 to $2000 a pop.........never mind..........
So Michael - Have you compared it to an OG Vertigo copy? It's interesting to hear the opinion of another non metal guy like myself. It was always a 2LP, so the running length was never a problem for the low end but the records were pretty thin and vinyl was on the way out in those days. I'm spinning mine now for what must be the first time in 25 years. Larger than life drums are certainly there by design! I'd really like to know if the remaster is an upgrade on what was already a very artificially big sounding album.
Thanks Michael. I read the following on Steve Hoffman’s forum: “[TBA] was an analog recording mixed through an analog console. The only thing digital was the two track recorder... and I think they also mixed this to analog tape but obviously preferred the sound of the digital tape.” I have no idea if this is true or not, but I’d also be surprised if an 80s band recorded by Bob Rock would record only in digital. Would be cool to hear the analogue tapes if they, in fact, exist. I think the issue is maybe none of the Metallica guys are really vinyl fans. Supposedly Tool are, by contrast, and so they’re supposedly working on a AAA release of their catalog. Here’s to hoping.
@@Michael45RPM Thanks! But when I look at Discogs it says the normal edition from 2021 is mastered by Chris Bellman and has CB in the deadwax and no RL from Bob Ludwig?
@@Michael45RPM Ok. Thanks! Then I'm just getting the normal vinyl. Would be nice to know what people consider the best sounding pressing of this album. An original or one of the reissues.
I'm sorry man, 52.000 copies worldwide is laughable, especially considering the popularity of this album. Their most 'accessible release should have been made more easily available, if that means compromising on the packaging to do so they could have. Content wise they could have replaced all dvd content with a bluray disc and leave out the interview discs (for example)
Truth is that EU and US pressing bar codes are different, so there are probably 2 pressings of the same cut. Which one did you review Michael? I presume the German one, thanks!!!
I have to admit, I'm not a fan of metal rock. For me, such monster box sets are only for the hardcore fans. A lot of material doesn't mean a lot of quality, but often the opposite.
I've got this box and must say DVDs are big disappointed (the past ones were also bad). I wonder why they decided to put so many shows in poor quality instead of one in good quality.
