OMG - the dog scene was hilarious. I also liked your little 1/8th inch trim idea to offset the fin nails. Cool!
Haha I'll have to rewatch to find the dog scene
OMG I found it! When she knocks over the saw horse! HAHAHA
Great tutorial specifically the sill thank you.
Great stuff. Thank you. Appreciate the wabi sabi lesson.
Fabulous exactly what I have been looking for this is great.
Great job, looked for a long time for a greT video explaining and showing how to do this.
thank you!
That bottom “Trim” piece looks good! - 👍🏼
Thanks!
Love your work man!
THNAKS!
Awesome work.
Thank you!
Thanks, huge help!
you're welcome!
Good job thanks again
you're welcome and thank you for watching and commenting!!!
Nice job on the trim
thanks!
this is very good just to the point i'm going to do this exactly i'm going waterproof the sides and top so when vinyl siding is install they can use j channel or i might use a router for the trim so the siding can just slide into
{ just some advice to grow your channel keep in simple remember your helping people that don't have much experience]
Thank you! Yeah I try to keep it simple but it's surprisingly hard to do!
Nice 👍 thank you
you're welcome! thanks for watching!
Thank you 👍
You're welcome!
Good video. One thing, your flashing over the window head should have end damns to prevent wind driven rain from draining behind the siding. Code requirement up here in Canada. Cheers.
nowadays from video I've seen you are supposed to hold the header trim 1" above the flashing leaving a huge gap too. Which I think is ridiculous. I have done the end caps you talk about before and always wondered if it really helped or not. I caulk it all in place but caulk does eventually fail. The thing I don't like about the end things is the flashing hangs over a little now and then you have to notch your siding around it.
Thanks bud this is awesome!! Please keep doing what your are doing and posting! Big thumbs up and subscribing as long as also please stop using your hands to push through the wood though on your table saw and use a push board, too many stories I know of in people loosing the only fingers they are born with! 120 cuts in a day at 3 extra seconds is 6 minutes well worth the thumbs and digits especially for use musicians ! Slainte ! Mike J Abrahamsen SF
Hey! Yeah I have push sticks for when I cut narrow pieces. I've been doing this for 20 years and haven't had any major incidents but I know it only takes one! thanks for your concern!!! :)
This is a good video with great tips on how to, the thing that is bothering me is, why not bring the side trims all the way down and then cut the bottom board in between the two sides, this way will help for rain water to drain straight down instead of onto the bottom trim board, causing for rotting
My .02
well designwise a windowsill typically goes the entire width of the trim is why. If you eliminate the windowsill altogether then yes you can cut the bottom trim board to the width of the window and run the side pieces long. I've done that before on a different style house. In the old days the windowsill was built right into the window and the whole piece was on an angle so water would shed away. The way we do it nowadays is reproducing the look without the angle. So you are in fact correct this does give a place for water to collect but that is why you cut an angle on the top of the sill so water sheds away and make sure it is caulked really well
You should Always use a push stick on a table saw.
Can you do the same technique for a house with vinyl siding? just seal between trim and vinyl siding?
What kind of primer do you use?
This was EXCELLENT! I am trying to enlarge my rotted out window trim which is only 1”. I want it to be 2” as it looks nicer. My question was: Do I need to cut the siding out around the window and insert the new trim or do I just put the new trim over the siding and fill it with caulking. Your video answered my question - I need to trim the siding back! Good thing I do have a Multitool! I also see that you did not miter the corners. Is this also to better protect the house from potential water penetration?
You probably could miter the corners, It would be more of an aesthetic thing than a water thing. Water will always find a way in! That's why I flash and caulk everything as best as possible
I had the same question, but I’m a stay at home mom without any woodwork experience. So now my plan to put trim around my front window might not happen. I bought shutters for all the other windows, but I think shutters around a double window look weird and I removed them. Maybe I’ll get the courage up to do the trim. If not, I’ll have to go buy more shutters and just live with it. I’m so nervous to remove my siding, because I’m afraid I’ll do it wrong and rain will poor under vinyl siding and rot my house. It’s under a large overhang, about a foot and a half and it stays bone dry under that area. As a matter of fact. My plants never get water under that overhang since the rain never gets under there. So maybe I should t be so nervous. Thank you for a great video and making it simple for someone like me to understand
👍🧡
for the life of me I couldnt get the flat cut on top of the sill, I see you had guard on opposite side. I'll try this thanks
Nice I'm glad this was helpful!
Is the siding nailer he best gun for trim? I am going to be installing 5/4 trim and am confused about the right gun and nails for the job. I will also be installing hardie siding. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!
I've never installed hardie siding so I don't know what's best for that. You can hand nail trim too. I've used a finish nailer but it doesn't hold the trim very well. While a finish nail looks nicer it doesn't have the same grab as a ring siding nail. You can get maze nails which has a slightly smaller head than the siding gun nails, but you have to hand nail those. I've also used spiral nails but if you ever have to take the trim off for a repair they are near impossible to remove. The siding gun to me is the best tool for the job but I'm sure others may disagree
Hi!, My home was built in 1996 with hardieboard siding. I'm told by a builder that the siding I have is old and most likely brittle, might even have cement in it so would be dufficult to cut cleanly and would open up s can of worms. The windows are sealed well as is. Do you have a video about trimming a window over existing siding? Is there a risk of a 1x4 warping since it's not as thick as a 2x4? What is the downside of installing trim over my existing siding? Right now my windows are not trimmed, looks dated. Thank you!
honestly I don't know much about that stuff. I'm a wood guy, never worked with hardibacker
Can this process be done with aluminum siding? I want to update my trim
nope. unfortunately aluminum doesn't bend in the same qway vinyl does. You have to take it all off starting from the top and working your way down.
So by using 5/4 Trim, the wood siding just butts up against it? If I was installing the Trim on a house with Vinyl Siding, do I no longer need J-channel? Basically, do I use the same installation method for the trim and sill whether the siding is vinyl or wood?? Thanks to anyone who can answer this question for me! - Tom
you either need j channel or cut out a rabbit in the back of the trim to make your own j channel. I've seen brick molding that has a rabbit pre-cut into it for vinyl siding but never seen it on a 1x4 that's custom
Can I do the same thing with vinyl siding?
vinyl siding would have to come off all the way around the window, then install the window and j-channel. then reinstall the siding. Siding has to go on after j-channel though
i wonder if you could use a router to make you own j channel to the siding can just slip under
Down here in the Houston area I see so many people just use a 1x4 on the bottom and don't even make a window sill. It's annoying because it's not really the correct way, it's the lazy way.
ah yeah I see that around here too. I like window sills. Although in the old days the window sill was actually a part of the window so what I did was just for aesthetics. The sills I made matched the original sills that were on this house before changing them out to have it look as close to original as possible
Thank you for the reply. I love seeing people put in a little extra effort to make something look really nice.
What kind of nails and gauge?
Standard siding gun nails, not sure what gauge. probably 2.5" long
oh and i used to use galvanized but when i sided my own house they all rusted so now i only use stainless steel
What about the caulking?
yeah I caulk all seams before painting. I use a good quality exterior caulk. I really like Dynaflex
@@BorsellinoHomeServices great stuff sir. I have 2 questions,
1. When you put the window up, did you put caulk or silicon behind the flange?
2. When u install the metal flashing, does the top part goes under the white wrap ? Or between the white wrap and the siding? Thank you
This is exactly what I needed to see. Unfortunately, I can't send the link to my wife because you didn't fix your mistake. The whole time, I'm thinking, this guy is no hacker. A nice job all the way up to not replacing one stinking board. I can't have her thinking I learned from a guy that just let it go. I live in Washington and sealing out the weather is a big deal. I like the drip edge at the top and was curious about the window seal but never saw it. Is it ok to let the trim on the sides drip onto the sill? Do I need drip egde there? Now your credability is in question and I must look elsewhwere. In the mean time, I did like and subscribe. I like your style. I think you are too much like me.
I am no hack but you can think what you like. thanks for watching!
I need to replace window trim - all old wood that has warped and separated from sill. I plan to replace the wood with pvc so this won't happen again.
yeah pvc won't rot but it can be annoying to work with. I used PVC trim on my back door so it won't ever rot.
HAHAHA My dog's name is Piper
COOL!
You need a push stick lol. Hopefully you still have all your fingers.
I'm missing half a finger but not from a woodworking accident. Dropped a barbell on it when I was 2 years old! I don't think I've ever cut myself on a table saw. But I did shave my pinky finger on a jointer once! I have a push stick but honestly I feel like I have less control with it
@@BorsellinoHomeServices It's the left thumb that gets whacked off. I saw you advance your left hand after you started cutting-bad. Keep that left hand planted (put a red line on the table!), pressure with thumb knuckle against board to press against fence. You're ok with right hand as long as board is wider than 3-4" because that's where the eye is. But, push stick is a very good habit. I see you have 20 years experience, let me tell you about tradesmen with 20+ years experience that one day had "that" accident. Seen it more than once. Mind the left hand! Cheers.
Thanks! If you were in my area I'd hire you to install window trim. Would an oscillating tool work to cut back vinyl siding for trim? My builder installed windows without trim, I'd like to tackle trimming them. Here's a video of Tommy installing PVC trim
ua-cam.com/video/cibMptF-F_g/v-deo.html
You can cut vinyl siding with tin snips. An oscillating tool would technically work but would be much harder than just using snips and you would end up damaging the tyvek or other membrane behind it in the process. You would need to use 5/4 trim and cut a rabbet for the vinyl to sit behind the trim to have a built-in j-channel.
With all due respect, I don’t believe that a high enough learning level was reached by the student before he felt qualified enough to become the teacher.
Bro this sucks
lol thanks
What kind of primer do you use?
depends what i'm doing. if i'm just priming the ends i use any oil based spray primer that dries quick. if im brushing i usually use zinsser 1-2-3 primer
