You nailed it!! Step one being: Make good song first. Compositional work and sound selection that makes sense together. If you’re making a song where your concepts and sounds are conflicting to begin with, you create mix work for yourself. If you’re a hobbyist, there’s almost 0 reason to make things harder on yourself while you’re still learning, and if you’re experimenting, then you don’t need to beat yourself up about the mix ❤ I came to add that mixing/making music on earbuds or AirPods isn’t always such a bad idea if you ACTIVELY listen to your references on the same monitors. The real issues come from not hearing the full image of what you’re making sometimes. But, if it sounds good on AirPods and a phone speaker, AND decent in the car?! You’re set as a hobbyist. My songs aren’t getting played in clubs, and pay a lot of homage to the workflow and sound selection of the late 90s. I don’t really mix my stuff I just balance volumes best I can and keep making more music to learn from!
good shit! i also work mostly on earpods these days and it’s been a huge boon to my workflow. the convenience is great but i also feel like i have a better picture of what the mix is actually going to sound like to most people, and then i can reference on monitoring headphones or a car stereo later to fix any problems that don’t show up in earbuds.
I personally use the DT990s a whole lot! However, I think those headphones are only really good when used on a stationary workstation/Desktop PC. I only unplugged them from my Desktop once to use them on my laptop and aside from my laptop not even being able to drive them properly (I got the 600 Ohm version as my internal soundcard on my desktop can drive them), the headphones are just a hot mess when carrying them around and using them on the go. Since I spend most of my time on my main Desktop workstation, I just keep them hooked up there and luckily our climate in Germany for the most part isn't as toasty as in Australia. It is more convenient to have dedicated Desktop headphones for me, as when I start doing stuff on my PC I just put them on and dont have to worry about too much cable wear or putting them in their case over and over again. When I am on the move I generally use the KZ IEM's mainly because they are cheap but still sound relatively OK. I use them for video editing, occasional music making and also when I work with my camera when Im out and about monitoring sound while I record. If I were to only work on my laptop, I am sure I would have ditched my 990s a good while ago!
at the risk of sounding like an apple fanboy, apple’s audio tuning is god tier. they tune hardware to sound GOOD. that goes a long way for mix reference, especially because it’s the way that a large majority of listeners will end up hearing your mix - through simple earbuds. good songwriting and composition will distract from a less than stellar mix, but a great mix can’t hide a poorly written tune edit - EAR NOT THE GEAR!!! YEA!
austrian audio hix65, expensive but really crazy lol. support and warranty of them is also great. edit: used to have audio technicas and they broke at the axis, audio technica support was quite unwilling to replace my shit

imo run the apple earpods until they die, then get some In-ear monitors with a detachable cable and all (IEM world is massive)

amazing beat as always.could u make a video on how you use panning in your beats? i never see ppl talking ab it beyond j saying that u should use it
I use apple earbuds as well, but do you ever have a problem with them clipping & crackling really easily?
i also use them, i have the buds connected to a scarlett solo and never had a clipping issue
I actually set that mix db sheet you showed on that other vid as my lock screen on my phone cause i use it so much 😂
Does anyone have recommendations for headphones that have detachable cords?
some IEMs or audio technica M series
