Thank you so much. I have improved Celeste and Brown Turkey. I am in northern middle Tennessee and mine haven't budded yet. Going out to do this today. I can't seem to get ripe figs before the cold comes. Maybe pruning will help. Another person says when the start getting growth tops during the fruit growth that I should clip the leaders off. idk tho. :( One day I will get it right or get a green house. :)
I used a Japanese saw on mine and didn't prune them real hard. I'm well south of you, just north of Houston proper so mine were not as dormant. I have TX Strawberry and TX Pecan that I wanted to preserve as much as possible. The Strawberry I can't find anymore and the Pecan is rare as well.
FYI Fig bush trimmings are meant to be repurposed for an amazing flavor kiss when smoking your favorite meat! Add some to your standard wood(s) when smoking on the off-set smoker. You’re welcome 😎.
Wow… Thanks for the tip! 😊 👍🏻
@dianepage5502 Are you using the leaves, stems and all? How long do you let them dry out first?
@@shashakeeleh5468 I trim my fig bush in mid-late fall (north Texas) before it sprouts. The “wood” needs to cure before use.
On your point of the leaves- once mature (based on my casual research) those are edible. I was wondering if I could substitute them for grape leaves. 🧐
My Brown Turkey was small enough to cover and save. Next winter I`ll put a low wattage heat lamp under a tarp covering it.
Glad you could save it. Those are really good figs! 😊
I trimmed mine a little over a month ago,got three more to plant out soon. Save yourself the grief and cut out any branch that is crossing over another. Them rubbing together can cause disease issues
Great idea. Thanks for the tips!
Great job old friend. Cheers
Thank you kindly
I pruned mine about a month or two ago, but mine are sprouting right now just like yours. Last year in October I took a couple of sticks off and turned them into 5 new trees using a propagation method I saw done by Travis at Lazy Dog farm. It worked out great. I have never eaten a fresh fig in my life. I’m ready to give them a shot. I have Celeste figs. Wish me luck! I’ll be following along with your progress.
Ha ha ha. I watched Travis prune his too. Celeste is a really good fig. I think you will love the taste of figs when you get some.
Not sure if it makes much of a difference, but I was told to keep the cutting blade on the main trunk side when pruning. Supposedly it makes a cleaner cut and that it doesn't pinch or hurt the bark of what's staying on the tree. And I pruned my apple trees, but haven't touched my cherries. I tried to get a couple fig trees last year, but the ones I wanted didn't survive the winter and I had to return them.
I hope my pruning does the trick. I hope you’re pruning does the trick too 😊
Figs are awesome. I have a honey fig tree. The production wasn't good last yr. No idea why. Hopefully better this year.
Same here
Oh boy, I cut back my figs a week ago and think I was just in time.
Herd Dat 👍🏻😎
Many fig growers on UA-cam. You need to sit down and Watch about 5 different growers. 2024 is starting off great. I have 20 fig trees. 16 different varieties. Only 3 in ground. I will put more in the ground very soon,3 feet apart. 5 have a Breba crop. LSU purple are dropping the Brebas. Good growing this year! West Texas zone 8b.
Thanks for the tips!
If it’s like my fig tree, it want matter. I’ve cut it flush with the ground, hoping to get rid of it. Came rite back. My dad planted it God only knows how long age.
Those dudes seem to be very resilient!
Ha ha ha. You are correct… They are very resilient.
You betcha👍🏻😎
Thank you! I was thinking about trying fig trees (central FL)..
Go for it!
@ShortbusMooner Check with your Ag office to find out how to battle the nematodes. That sandy soil is full of them. You an also see if David The Good has some videos about that.
Loppers aren’t ratcheting. Just geared
Technically, you are probably correct.
But, it adds a tremendous amount of leverage to each cut. Love these things.
Nothing to do with figs, but I finally ordered some advion. I tend to be a bit cheap, but I am sooo ready to be rid of these pests. I have all of my fruit trees and berries in raised beds. Went out to weed and get ready for fertilizer. Didn’t know the first bed was a giant fire ant colony until they were up both arms! The ate me up!
Wow.
I’ve had that happen too. They Advion will definitely take care of them. Don’t let it get wet. If it’s gonna rain you need to wait. Also, it works better when the outside temperature is over 75°.
That’s when
the ants are out foraging for food
Alan, have you seen the Ryobi 18v bypass pruner? It would make tasks like this so much easier. Just pull the trigger and snip.... With all the pruning on limbs about this size that you do every year, it might be a good idea (but make sure the old blue Ryobi stuff you have is same battery).
Thanks for the tip. I will check it out. I do love the cordless Ryobi tools. I have got a bunch of them.
Stopped at the local nursery, they had tx everbearing and brown turkey and no celeste figs. Which do you prefer? Neighbor gave me a bunch but had no clue what it was. Said bears every year. Gonna see if I can get some cuttings. I dried 3 loads and vac pak'd
I have growth starting on those dormant jalepeno's
Both those fig varieties are good. I have heard some people say that the Texas Everbearing is the same as Brown turkey… Not sure.
I planted a small Celeste fig tree in middle TN about 2 miles from the KY border with one branch about 2’ tall last year. It grew 3 other branches out of the base last year but they only grew about a foot each. My Ph probe told me my Ph was 4.5 after my soil test said 6. I applied a lot of limestone last year and checked the Ph again last week and it was at 6.5. I put some 10-10-10 fertilizer around the drip ring. Think it will take off this year?
I would think it will take off and do real well. Hope so, anyway.
What happened to spring … it’s cold here today…it was 80 degrees yesterday
My fig trees are budding out and getting leaves on them , my peach and pear trees are blooming… is it ok to prune them when they are leafing out
I went out in shorts and tee shirt to let my chickens out then 2 hours later went to check for eggs and had to put sweats on!!
For sure … i was hurrying to get All my chickens out and fed
I didn’t get my eggs yet … they aren’t gonna get too hot today
I would think they are in fruiting mode...im not so sure...hopefully he will answer you!
Uhhh did the dog get hold of that Ryobi?😅
Ha ha ha, sure looks like it doesn’t it 😊
You put triple 13 on them?
Actually, I believe it was 10 - 20-10
