My mother who was a seamstress with many many years of making all kinds of items big and small would be very proud of your achievement! As the son of a seamstress, I am impressed with your steep learning curve!
Good update. No matter what you're sewing for foam it's a bag that the foam fits in. if your foam is square you can do your usual box cover. The original cover you showed in the video had baggy corners, it looks "non- pro". What yo want is for the fabric to fit the foam with no excess fabric hanging off the end. You need to calculate a curve to fit the foam. In sewing clothes you'd use a french curve to calculate a sleeve opening in a coat (for example) So find a curve around you , like the curve of a tea cup, turned upside down, and drawn on the wrong side of the fabric. Pin two wrong sides together, stitch the curve , and when you turn it to the good sides VOILA! You've go t a nice curve on both sides of the fabric.
I would think that design would be good for outside because there is not much stitching in the sun? It might hold up better outdoors. It is great to see you learning and sharing with everyone! Love ya'lls videos!
+onlychevys Williams Good point! I also heard from a fellow sewer that as far as cushion design, it's a really easy way to make a quick cushion without having to make too many measurements-- i.e. just wrap the top plate around the foam and there you have it! only sewing required is the bottom plate, corner seams and zipper!
All these skills you learn by the refit will help you to finance your trip around the world. As you might know cruising is: fixing things in beautiful places :) In every anchorage there will be someone who will need help and the local boatyards are too expencive or are doing bad work. Look forward to upcoming adventures!
+Learn to Sail True! As a matter of fact, I've been so busy with sewing projects, I've barely had any free time in the last 2 months! I miss the good ol' days of relaxing on my day off!
Oh yeah. Being all day long in the Club sewing at the beautiful Florida weather must be a pain in the ...! But I am sure your "cast off - day" will come soon and all the work will pay off :) How is it going with your sailing lessons? I have some funny stop-motion learn to sail videos on my channel. Might help.
+Learn to Sail Thanks! I'll definitely check them out ! To be honest, we've been slow on the sailing lessons as we've been so busy, so your videos will be great to help me on my learning journey!
The benefit is that there is less time spent cutting and sewing, less cutting/sewing equals faster turnaround times on each unit meaning more units can be made in the same amount of time.
I appreciate the info on foam. I have never really thought much about it before but I've been looking around to get another pad to go on my bed because the one I have was given to me and its old. Plus, I have found that when I visit my parents house their guest bed is firm, and I sleep so good on it, I decided I could just ditch the old pad and step up to a firmer one. With the insight you shared I decided I'm going to shop around before I just jump up and buy the first one on sale. Good job and ya'll keep up the good work ! Thanks, Eric
Great idea! I've heard the froli sleep system is s good way to improve the comfort of even pretty bad foam. Also look into layering foam and potentially a tufted topper or some kind of softening topper. Good luck and let us know us know how it goes!
Thanks, I just received a PHD Degree in "foam technology". That was extremely informative. I wouldn't want to; but do know that if I had to, I could replace my foams covers myself. I have the "hot knife"; but not the sewing machine.
+Ken Lynch :) Happy to help! My next project is designing the most comfortable boat mattress. I'm experimenting with Latex foam, High Resilience Layered foam, the froli bed system, and perhaps a tufted topper to see what combo works best! It will be a V-berth for a King!
I did my cushions with the side, top and bottom plates ( side plate was one piece except where the zipper went) but didn't look half as good as the previous boat which the previous owner had put piping on the seams. I like the idea of the one piece top/sides which would be particularly good for the outside cushions with vinyl fabric ( on the to do list). Keep up the good work guys! Thanks for all the info on the different foam types too.
Oh cool! I've thought about doing one long side panel before- maybe I'll try it out on my next big cushion! I've done it before on rounded edge, smaller cushions but found that it was s little difficult to line up.
If you ever run out of orders for replacement boat cushions there is a vast market for replacement cushions for garden furniture and conservatory (you might call this sunroom) cushions because they often get wet and rot or are destroyed by UV light. Pet beds are another possible source of income especially if you can come up with fabrics that are washable but tough even if chewed (in the case of dogs!) Heavy canvas seems about the best at present for us.
+Dan Whiteford What great ideas! Thanks! I've sure been staying busy in the marina! Haven't considered other niches but I will if business gets slow :)
Holy crap! Who knew that there was so much science to foam?! lol. Great detail in the clip. I'll probably never use this information, but you're fun to watch. Such an industrious lil worker. haha
Great info. The only con I can imagine is sloppy corners in that cushion pattern, but I imagine it can be tidied up. Not having a boxing plate eliminates the problem of the cover sliding on the cushion. i.e.: The edge seam moves away from te corner edge of the cushion.
Great set of videos, I've watched them all during the past two days!!! I'm a retired expat, living in Bangkok for the past five years, and new to sailing just this year. Didn't see the engine repower and bottom painting videos, so are those in the future??? All have been very informative and helpful to a "greenie" like me and best wishes on your future plans.
Hello! Welcome to the channel! We spent a month in tonsai climbing and fell in love with Thailand! Hopefully we'll be back there with the sailboat someday! We started doing Atticus updates after repowering and after painting the boat. We have raw footage that we will use for our "launch" video once the boat is all ready to go! Thanks for following along and keep in touch!
I am not in the upholstery business but I would think the major benefits of that design are way fewer seems which mean fewer week points. The biggest catch would be to make sure you don't skimp on the zipper. If it fails...no good. The zipper in the existing cushion cover looked like a pretty good quality zipper but then again, I like zippers with large teeth.
Hi, nice video, i ordered a 4inch firm last year to change my boat mastress, it was way too firm to sleep on it, i m thinking about re ordering, what thickness would you suggest? Medium 3inch maybe?
watch out with latex some people are allergic to it. i did not know this till i meet my wife and found out she is very allergic to it..... and yes i found out the "hard" way if you get my drift. i thought i was a stud then i realized what was going on.... i almost put her in the hospital... must not have been to bad though she did not leave and still married me.... back to your sewing i think it is a very cool idea. what a great way to make money while your cruising. most of us hate the material our cushions are made with..... your are going to make a lot of money.
+Project Atticus I ran a mold dept. with 15 employees and one girl developed an allergy to latex after a couple of years wearing latex gloves. We didn't know what was wrong with her and her doctor was telling her it was her nerves ! LOL I ordered latex free gloves because it was just on her hands and the problem was solved ! ( And she changed doctors )
Hey been following you series pretty closely and have seen the sailrite videos. Thanks for the great content. Im not a live aboard but a day sailor, so my investment into the settee and Vberth cushions will be minimal. I think I can reuse the foam, or source a cheap ebay 3" Poly sheet. And Ive found very great deals at places that sell outdoor table cloths, nautical/beach themed too. I like the 1 piece construction because Im not doing the stripes and not too worried about a "squared" look. Im also considering sewing in Velcro instead of zippers because they are cheaper. Any pros/cons you can forsee? SV Snow P30
+Phong Do Hi Phong! Sorry, looks like your comment got caught up in my spam folder for some reason. I think those sound like good ideas. Another cheap solution I've recently heard about to help the breathability and decrease risk of mold on poly is "hyper vent" (see www.hyperventmarine.com). As long as you get a heavy duty velcro I'd imagine it would work great! Let us know how it turns out!
The zipper in the middle of the side makes it possible to use the mattress on both sides. (alone when the zipper is protected by the smooth side of the bed / Bank. So if you sit on the bed / couch, the zipper will not come between edge of the bed / couch and your buttock. ) The zipper on the corner can makes it vulnerable to damage. Of itself or of its environment. On my boat mattress, the zipper in the middle of the bottom side. so I can’t turn it unfortunately. (sorry for my bad English)
+Project Atticus The zipper at the bottom is over the most part in the leghte of the mattress. It's so original done by the yacht builder Jeanneau. (so I have not made it) Is it difficult to get the foam into the slipcover that way? Well, I have not tried it myself yet. but I think it's that bad. if you bend the mattress in a U shape and slide over each end . And with some help from someone. It also depends on the hardness of the foam. But surely the corners of the zipper should be made strong. you can add a piece of fabric at the ends of the zipper under the zipper. so that captures all the tension!?..
+Sailing Jeanneau Love Love. Furniture cushions are also often provided with some kind of netting web to the foam. So that slides easily and protects. Ask for it at the foam shop. schuimrubbergigant.nl/doe-het-zelf-accessoires/tricot-kous/tricot-kous-70-cm-breed.html

+John Smith yeah, seems like a relatively decent short cut!

I think that this cushion design is mostly to keep the pattern continuing down the sides lining up properly
Great information - thanks for sharing!

Great info on foam. Thanks!!! So what type of closed cell foam would be 100% idea for cockpit cushions and backs, do' you think?

Oh wow! Ok well I'm ordering a couple different latex samples so I'll be sure to have the guy I'm making the v berth mattress for test it out first!

Wow great video, you really know your stuff indeed, would a Density : 1.8 , 44lb Compression foam, make a nice firm matress?
Wow, that was a thumbnail intro into getting schooled on foam!

+Sailing Jeanneau Love Love if you protect the zipper with a fabric edge, it will not cause damage by chafing
I see! Thanks for the zip! Is it harder to get the foam into the slip cover with the zipper on the bottom plate?
