Let's take this one step further. If someone were to kick my car and damage it, I'd press charges specifically for the police report number. I'd take the car to a dealership to get it fixed, even if it costs me far more than an aftermarket shop would. Go ahead and pay to get it fixed, get the receipt, go to the local state crime victim's compensation fund, and file for reimbursement. Why? Because the perp then gets saddled with the extra order for restitution that sticks for 20 years, except instead of me having to pursue it privately, the state fund pursues it with far more resources and tenacity than I have.

It is not an officer's job to talk the victim out of pressing charges. If a crime has been committed, the job of the officer is to take witness statements and verify damage. Conducting a valuation of the damage and suggesting its only $25 worth is inappropriate; further, if a wiper was yanked off with any kind of force - there is no telling the potential damage to the actual mechanism of the wiper and its wiring. This is why you conduct your investigation, gather all the information of parties involved, and then file charges upon completion of the investigation when the paperwork of actual cost of repair returns. At the end of it - there is a difference between criminal mischief and criminal damage to private property.
Years ago my wife and I were visiting her family in another state. Guy pulled out infront of us and I was unable to completely avoid hitting him. The at fault driver had no license, and no insurance. He was allowed to drive away from the scene. One officer doing the crash report told me that my damage was minor and I should be able to drive away. I had a feeling it was worst due to the camber on the drivers front wheel. While he was still there I crawled under to inspect and the lower control arm was snapped in half. Cops are not mechanics. Most aren't even mechanically inclined. If you don't know, you shouldn't talk.
Police always do talk to victims to not press charges cause they don’t wanna go after criminals but come at you full force if you told them to do their job properly.
Exactly. Maybe it was just the wiper, in which case, yeah, I would just replace it rather than deal with any process I have to go through to press charges or get paid. But that cop isn't a car mechanic, he doesn't know if it's just the wiper. If she damaged the mechanism or whatever, that could be over a thousand dollars to replace with parts and labor.
AND when you talk a victim out of pressing charges, you dismiss what happened to the victim. You tell the victim what happened to you isn't a big deal get over it. What you tell the suspect is bad behavior of any nature (ripping off rear wiper for example or even slapping someone) teaches the suspect/tells suspect you can get away with anything
I agree 100%. What next kick a Mercedes and put a big dent? He wants to be made whole. It’s not $25. If it’s broken by electrical that could be a couple hundred dollars. Give him his money.
The cop didn't want to do the paperwork, and would rather work as an insurance adjuster. I bet if anyone did that to a police car, they would arrest them instead of saying, "Oh it's only $25 of damage, not worth it." 😂

@@pauljordan4452 Assuming the motor has to be replaced, obviously depending on the extent of the damage, since it was the back door/lid, in most cases you have to remove the interior panel to access anything electrical. There is the time to diagnose the issue/extent of the damage, the time to remove what's necessary to be able to diagnose the issues, and the time to actually repair/replace the damage components. Keep in mind that a lot of shops charge labor by the hour, anywhere from $125 to $250. The time put into the car to do all the diagnostics, the time it takes to do all the necessary repairs, the cost of parts on top of the labor time, doing such a job could easily cost $500. Just to throw out there, most fail to recognize that the labor hours are largely determined by what the manufacturers say. So if the job takes 2 hours to do and a tech gets it done in 1 hour, you're still being charged for 2 hours. A tech's experience and ability to beat the book time won't reduce a customers total bill.

Cops getting upset with the Lyft driver because he doesn't want to stick around is hilarious. Ya I was confused about that too, like he's loosing money, he stayed around for that whole ordeal and it clearly escalated into something else that wasn't about him being involved, so obviously he wanted to leave if he didn't have to stick around.
The driver even had to point out to the loser cop that his partner was struggling with the lady he just tried to get the charges dropped for lol. That was bike cops attempting a "power move" after struggling with a little girl and trying to get out of paperwork.
NEVER let a cop tell you whether you should press charges or not. It's not their job, and technically they aren't even allowed to do that. Cop could of gotten in a lot of trouble if the Lyft driver reported that a cop told him not to press charges.
Bro literally even a LAWYER cant tell you what to do legally. They can only give you advice. You have to make the decisions yourself. You can defer to them obviously but a lawyer legally cannot make a decision for you or sway your decision a certain way. They can only give you the facts and the choices. They can tell you what THEY would do but ultimately the decision is up to you. They can tell you "this is a good deal" and "doing this would be stupid" but they cant say "you have to do this" or "you shouldnt do this". I know it seems like a fine line but it's extremely important legal precedent.
In south africa even if you dont want to press charges the goverment judicial system tends to charge them with a crime even if you dont want them to. 😂 So a kid who is 14 will go to juvi. Quite right. Also the loss of earnings for the evening of the offence, and the motor being repaired consequently putting the car out of action. The officer’s attitude is all wrong, I bet the story would be very different if the offender were a young black male.

The motor could be broken, the actual housing itself is a hundred bucks. The labor to have it fixed is probably about a hundred bucks, too. His car's value is decreased because of it. His car in the shop to have it fixed is at least a day he can't work. This "only $25" could easily wind up costing him close to a grand. And even if it were really JUST $25, why should the driver have to absorb that? He was providing a service to her and she smashed up his car. That's not his problem. @CptSchmidt I don't think he was necessarily talking him out of it. Just that it's only 25$ and his the drivers time worth that.
I thought the same thing! "I assessed the damage.." Not his job.
I hate it when cops try to talk people out of pressing charges. It just gives them permission to act worse later.

Wiper $25, Wiper Motor $50, Labor $100. Total $175. That's a whole day of work.
Wiper motors for some cars are even more than that.
Explain why it takes so long.
And his time as well…dealing with this bs.

And even if the lady is actually convicted the judge will give her like a month of probation, sentence suspended. Is it really worth it? I think he just explained it badly.
He said the whiper wasn't working so she probably broke the motor also.thats definitely. Ore than 25 dollar fix.
What a bunch of sweethearts! Their parents must be so proud! They will be able to watch their children forever!
That should be a requirement.
@vicmorrison8128 these entitled brats will produce more entitled brats until someone teaches them the consequences of their actions, and perhaps they'll change that narrative. Or, we'll have to suffer more karens.
I would be checking that young ladies ID because I think she just told on herself. " Got nothing better to do then arrest underage, a.. above age girls"! 🤣
I love the mistaken identity girl. Finally someone that doesn't immediately take offense at having a finger pointed at them, and relies on the facts to prove her innocence. And then doesn't get offended when it's proven not to be her, and she goes on about her day as if nothing happened. Love to see it.
What was that case she spend 10 yrs in jail because she was innocent, which one i'm talking about now? There are two of them and i can't remember their names...
@@socialmediamanagement1859 I'm not saying that innocent people don't get mistakenly identified as the perp and then go to jail for it. But you don't give the cops a reason to be suspicious by acting super defensive like I've seen so many times in body can videos.
Um??????? People have every right to be mad if they’re being falsely accused. I’ve seen a lot of these fucking mistaken identity things and 99% of the time they’re being attacked by police for no reason so enough with the bullshit

Good ol' Daytona Beach. Seabreeze to exact.
it was a felony when she resisted arrest, and when she kicked officers. it's decided in court, a lot of times the smaller charges get dismissed when there are more severe charges. but that's all up to the judge. but it sounds like prison time, is that not justice?
@@ivanjakanov Ya for the officer. I hear what you're saying but they were going to let her go with no charges until it had to do with something pertaining to them.

Uber driver will be working for free for a day or two to buy a new motor for window wiper. Never get talked out of getting what you need back.
Not hardly
Yup you never know what damage might of occurred out of sight. There could be damage to the glass, motor, motor structures and wiring. All of which cost a hell of a lot more than a wiper blade.
This department seems unprofessional.
Very much so.

Theres probably not a single part on that car that cost only $25.. f that cop for trying to downplay her bad behavior.
I bet he just didn't want to do the paperwork...
Couldn't he just write a summons and release her?

idk man, arresting 2 drunk young girls cause they took a sign and were willing to return it seems so over the top and backwards. as if none of us would steal something silly on a night out that we shouldn't have, like a traffic cone or smth. not everything has to be escalated.
I like that they showed the first lady. She knew she did nothing wrong but was still being stopped. And she acted with some sense, was reasonable, and got to go on her way. You can tell she was a little annoyed, which was fair but she was in control of herself and got to go home. Ya know, like how it’s supposed to go. Shows that you can make almost any interaction with the police go smoother, since you really only have control over yourself any way.

I’m sorry, bike cop assessed the wiper being ripped off as only $25? Maybe for JUST the wiper, not the damaged arm or motor.. kinda scummy bike cop was trying to pressure the driver to just eat the cost because he didn’t want to follow through with his job. I’m normally a fan of how the cops conduct themselves in videos on this channel but the cop in this one was not very good
I looked it up, it ranges from $90-$225 for a new wiper motor, an estimated hour for labor, and anywhere between $10-$40 for new wiper. The bike cop downplaying the cost and trying to talk the guy out of pressing charges is terrible police work
@@Tototorondamn you guys are getting robbed in daylight then. When I got my first car the wiper and motor were broken. I had to pay around 35 euro's to fix that shit hahaha

Alcohol is a terrible poison... even decent people can act very irrational when heavily intoxicated so I wouldn't jump on the parents so fast. Maybe they are horribly raised people but maybe they are just shitfaced.
@@mnn1265 Alcohol doesn't make a person an asshole, it just removes the limiters they keep on normally to prevent others from seeing how much of an asshole they are.
@@Strahan740i I completely agree with you up to a normal heavy dose. However, if you become "poisoned" aka intoxicated sufficiently at a level of say double-to-triple the legal limit to drive people will behave very primally and unpredictably. If she had ripped the wiper off of HIS vehicle, you can bet your butt that this cop would've happily done all of the work necessary to charge her. The bottom line is, what he was really saying to the victim was: _"Sorry, but I don't feel like doing my job."_

$25? Yea right. That wiper prob costs $250 to replace.
lol, no.
@@adammiller9179 Yes, if the internal motor was damaged
The wiper blade alone is $25. The wiper arm is probably $70, the electrics easily around $200, and another $300 for labor, since the liftgate would probably have to be removed and disassembled to service the electrics.
Expecting a guy who works three jobs to fork out a couple of hundred dollars to fix his car.

The officer talking the victim out of pressing charges is trash.
Yes. Purposefully tearing up someone’s vehicle is worth them going to jail. He’s terrible.
4:42. I didn’t appreciate the question “Is $25 worth taking someone to jail for?” How DARE he try to trivialize her conduct by minimizing the dollar amount. Without a rear windshield wiper on an SUV that causes danger to himself and potential passengers. She’s responsible. PERIOD!
Officer Soup Sandwich wants to get paid for doing literally nothing. It's a good thing the victim told him his partner was rolling around in the middle of the street with the suspect. It's not his job to determine damage, to someone else's property. Wiper blades, like everything, are expensive. If the armature and motor were damaged, it could be a couple hundred bucks easy. Poor conduct on the officers part.
you might want to go to a different auto shop, you're being ripped off if they charge you a couple of hundred for that.
Hopefully, insurance can cover the auto damage, especially with a police report of some sort.
EDIT: Then again, a deductible makes minor damage fall to the owner. I forgot about that.
Spot on Correct
@@TheGalantir you are incorrect, as he said if the internal motor was damaged when the wiper arm was torn off it could be hundreds of dollars in damage.
@@TheGalantirwiper blades are relatively cheap. If she damaged the motor that’s easily a $100-$300 part plus labor, you’re looking at a shop charging you $500-$1k for replacement.

That male officer needs to be investigated.
