Since some people have been asking for it, here are the budgets adjusted for inflation (as of 2020):
Mean Streets: $1.7 Million
Goodfellas: $49 Million
Gangs Of New York: $143 Million
Mantin Scorcese is so good director want part 2
I know this man only has 3 films, but how about the evolution of Andrew Dominik?
I only just discovered your channel and I wanna say, it's just incredible what good, interesting content you produce! Thanks for that. :)
I feel the irishman would have been better for comparison cos it's his most expensive film to date. $300m+ if I'm not wrong. He's also exploring similar characters and themes in all three films.
@@rohitjayade367 That budget was mostly because of the de-aging. Otherwise this movie wasn't as grand in scale as Gangs was.
I didn't expect cranes to be used this way, especially in pair with Range Rover
Because of football games, I had an image in my mind that they would have some kind of motor on the rigging the camera was attached to. But then I have to remember what year the movie was made when he said that it was a range rover that was making the camera move. So I said, oh yeah, they didn't have anything like that back then.
But I wonder if that is where the inspiration for what they use at football games came from.
It is probably because of the weight of the camera that they couldn’t use the spider cam set used in sports broadcasts or maybe it was also a noise concern (something like the one mentioned for mean streets) - by using a rope and the car the source of the noise /engine sound is far away especially important for the first segment (close up of the dead Liam Neeson Character).
Crazy to think that you could produce a similar shot today by using a drone
@@kozykev definitely but the problem with a noisy engine and spinning propellors remain
And it's the biggest budget film where they left in someone looking at the camera! 10:17
My heart is happy now that I’ve seen this. Thank you for this.
Spielberg would be a nice addition to your series, as well as Ridley Scott (even George Lucas would have a nice and interesting video about THX-1138, STAR WARS and a prequel movie)
This was great as always. It's really cool to see the evolution and the things the directors keep the same along the years. Would love to see a 3 budget levels of PTA movies. And a full breakdown of the ciinematography of Raging Bull, it's one of my favorite movies ever! I love the cinematography of that movie it's amazing!
I was thinking of doing PTA next. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@InDepthCine oh snaaaaapppppp ~ so i know it'll be Hard Eight and phantom thread (or there will be blood, i dunno)
BUT - what will the "medium" budget breakdown be?
@@InDepthCine hard eight- low budget
Phantom thread,magnolia- middle
Master,There will be blood- high budget ( according to PTA standard)
@@InDepthCine you should try Denis vellienuie
I’ve been waiting for this video, nice job
I love how you put these videos together. You’ve made a fantastic series!
Thank you for always adding subtitles! For me, as English is not my first language, they are very helpful!
Mate, your videos are fantastic! Thanks for everything you do!
Currently taking notes and binging your format. It's so well executed. Thanks a lot!
I love this series! Keep up the masterful work!
Was expecting this video for over a long time.
Thank you depth cine❤
I've been waiting for this.
Great video series - appreciate the content. Keep up the good work.
Love this series, nice concept! :)
I noticed that usually the movie in the middle of this, each stuck the most with me (Pulp Fiction, Memento, Goodfellas...).
So directors seem to be in their prime, just before getting so successful, that they get to full of themselfes and can do whatever they want.
Restrictions are good for creativity in filmmaking, it seems. :D
My new favorite channel! Thanks for the content!
Oh god do I love Gangs of New York, man 2002 was a great movie year! Also, that movie is almost everything I wanted the Assassin’s Creed movie to be, sometimes I like to pretend it is the Assassin’s Creed movie 😂 Hope you’re doing well btw Grey, it’s getting so cold over here lol.
How Scorsese Shoots A Pimp At 3 Shooting Ranges
XD
Thank you so much for your videos they are very entertaining and informative ❤️
Just found your channel, subscribed and thanks for the content 👍
Your videos are always informative
This is one of the most intelligent and well-spoken channels on filmmaking that I have personally come across. I watched the Tarantino video before this one, and I am very interested in seeing more videos!
This is great! love your videos.
It would be very interesting if you could do the story of video-assist and how it evolved from film to digital movie camera :)
Great video as always, would love one on Spielberg !
Another excellent video. Thank you!
I really love these videos and I wanna thank you for making this one in particular because Scorsese is probably my favorite director. I was wondering if you ever wanted to do one about Stanley Kubrick?
Great video-essay man! Should be part of a filmschool curriculum
Lovely, informative video as always. My only complain is it isn't twice as long!
Fantastic Video. Subscribed
Great video, thank you so much! :)
Fantastic as always.
I'd be interested to hear this same approach on budget analytics in the future on directors like Oliver Stone, Tim Burton and Wes Anderson. Especially Tim Burton on films like Beetlejuice, Batman, and Sweeney Todd, in my humble opinion.
This was a nice breakdown on how Scorsese worked around these budgetary constraints of his earlier work and how he did it when he secured a bigger budget later on in his directorial output, whether it was Gangs of New York or The Departed, among others in his later career.
In any event, I look forward to the next installments on this nice series of yours, so keep up the good work on them!!!
Please continue this series ❤️❤️
Incredible Vid!
Thank you for keeping us up with such great content❤️
Scorsese ❤️
excellent videos
Dude you distill this information so well
A PTA video would be dope
The fact that Scorsese keeps exploring other genres is what makes his career last so long
Edgar Wright would be an amazing addition to this series!
agreed
I concur
I literally just sat down to watch Goodfellas on tv and this video popped up in my youtube feed, nice.
You should do Wes Anderson or Alejandro González Iñárritu next!
Man you need to do the Coens or Villeneuve. 🙂
You should do Dion Beebe and his work on Collateral/Miami Vice 2006. Criminally underrated action films that are shot to perfection IMO.
Love this series, do one for Denis Villenuve.
Love these videos - but on this one I think not mentioning the cost of the soundtrack on Goodfellas, is an oversight. There is no official number, but some have said it's the most expensive soundtrack in film history, possibly accounting for more than half the budget (includes two Rolling Stones songs, Dean Martin, Donovan, George Harrison, etc.).
You have a great voice.
I love this series
I wish you would have chosen "After hours" in low budget. That's an amazing movie that has an uncanny feel to it. Can watch it multiple times.
Good video🤜
Could you do Wes Anderson next? Great video!
Hey would you do a video about the Queen's Gambit I think it's a master class in practical lighting ... Thanks you allot.
Thank you ❤
Thank you very much for your well informed essays. These UA-cam is rather short of
Have you thought about making a video about Terry Gilliam? Sure he‘s never come anywhere near the 100 million dollar mark. But nevertheless he might be interesting, especially for those who need/want to do more with less to nothing.
Thanks bro.
Please do one on Wes Anderson
I'd love to see a video on Edgar Wright, Ridley Scott or Guy Ritchie.
The more energy the more hope
i’ll watch later but have a like from now.
My favorite director.
Do Dennis Villanueva please!!
Thanks for the subtitles 🇷🇺
Can you do one for James Cameron, Taika Watiti
i'm thinking a Robert Rodriguez video HAS to be up soon, right?
I mean, the budget gap between his films is unrivaled
Would love to see David Lynch :)
Next do Coen brothers, with fargo the big Lebowski and no country for old men
Great video in a great series!! I’d love to see one on Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, or Paul Thomas Anderson.
Raging Bull and King of Comedy sure are iconic, but I'm not sure about "successful." Scorsese thought Raging Bull would be his last movie, and King of Comedy was a massive commercial flop.
I know he only has 3 but a Robert eggers one would be great
Most directors today: Crane shot? CGI that bitch!
Scorsese: So I built an SUV-operated cable car for the sake of a single shot...
True art takes insane levels of dedication, folks.
Are you from South Africa bro?
Can we get an Alejandro Inarritu one?
It's sad to know that this legend is finding it very difficult to finance his films nowadays but Studios Shit out How many ever comic book crap they want. Shame on Hollywood!
Right.scorsese said it took many years to get finance for the irishman.😔😔
You have no idea how films work
You Gotta Do Wes Anderson Next
Amazing channel. If I could ask for one thing I would say - more female directors please! Thanks :)
PTA NEXT!!
Two years just on the CGI scenes. When you hear things like that you say no wonder budgets get to be so big. But you have to remember that often the budgets are mostly spent on the actors. And then you see why many people who are working in areas like that get jaded about working on movies.
That's entertainment.
you should've made this a "4 budget levels" video considering the budget of The Irishman haha
Paul Thomas Anderson would be a brilliant video
12:24 hahahaha
I like your video.
Can you do Peter Jackson next or Tim Burton?
PYou should do a "How Godard Shoots a film at 3 diferents buged levels".
Aw yiiiiiiiiiih boyyyyy
Yes, yes, y'all.
Ed Wood
Pleaase do Francis Ford Copola NEXT.
ME: FRANCIS
Los angelees
ma-kiz-mo
It's Ma-cheese-mo not Makismo, Machismo.
MUKIZMO!
YEEESSAYTT
I learnt more here than at masterclass.com , which was a total waste of money. bummer!
Tbh gangs of ny might be one of the worst scorsese movie although it is still much better than 90% of other movies
Its pronounced machismo
I love your videos but machismo comes from macho. So if you know how to pronounce macho, you should pronounce machismo properly. Just so you know!
Never been a fan.
