  • Hi friends, today we are going to be chatting about my story and how I became a self-taught developer. From teaching myself to code, to going to a Bootcamp (I still consider it on the self-learning path because it was very short and a lot of self-learning still involved).

This is super useful and wise
My story is similar to Tiff's as well
I started out as an interpreter but wasn't convinced, so I tried many things till I got into coding
now I'm a self taught full stack developer in charge of a full team
    It took me 4 years
Almost quit couple dozens of times, took many breaks, but everything paid off eventually
The trick is to be patient, persistent, and belive in yourself
The field isn't that easy, but you can definitely get through if you keep at it
    Good luck!

Thanks for the video. I love seeing more Independent Women in the Tech industry learning how to program. I’m only 20 years old and I program a GameBoy game on the Play Store and gotten a in the Nintendo Developer Portal but all the basic Programming I did was self taught and then founded Mattolina LLC which lead to me being verified on google and created Bianca Ai Chat and use Arch Linux. But I really enjoy your videos because more people should take advantage of the internet and be self taught because it easy then ever. I’m proud that we have more self taught women and people in the tech industry.🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊

Thanks for this video, Tiff. I began my coding journey about 2 weeks ago and every so often I wonder whether I am wasting my time - with syntax, for example, it is difficult for me to understand that I don't have to remember everything (and that using documentation is not 'cheating'). I've found that learning to code is most rewarding when I take a step back and realize how much progress I am making and may make during the next month or two. The opportunity is endless and I truly love being able to create. Your videos keep me motivated and entertained, while also allowing me to dream. For that I thank you!

Hey man, not that I have any cred here but I do want to mention that you shouldnt worry about syntax. Whatever youre doing, be writing your code in an IDE or VSCode because itll help you with the syntax and let you focus on the important things like concepts and actually making software. I wasted far too much time on the syntax.... Hope youre still at it!

    • @MYNAMEISKLAY

@@ImLaminarBro Hey man! Thanks for responding. I am proud to say that I've taught myself both Javascript (Typescript) and Python, and have completed my portfolio last week. I started applying for jobs on June 1st and have a goal of being employed by September 23rd (to mark the 1 year anniversary of my coding journey). I am glad I stuck with it because, as you said, my worries were quickly went away and I was able to not only remember syntax, but find joy in searching things up if I wasn't sure.
PS. I am also creating an IOS (swift) application right now, and have been teaching myself C++. Point being, I feel much more comfortable learning these things now then I did 8 months ago.
Again, thank you for your response, brother. It is people like you who helped me understand that I could teach myself how to code. Take care!

Great story, it resembles mine in many points. I had successful career in PR for 10 years, comfortable position, no technical background. Got into coding by accident and suddenly something clicked. First was curiosity, later came hunger to improve :) I tried frontend first, but finally found backend the most satisfactory to me. I went to bootcamp (it helped me a lot) and finally decided to give up my old job. Now I've been working as a Java Dev for 3 years and couldn't be more happy.
My advice to all of you who think about changing a career path and becoming a self-taught developer. I you find coding fun and enjoy it, you can do it, just like Tiff says. It's only a matter of being self motivated and hard work. And I suggest taking a part in some kind of bootcamp if you don't have someone who could review your code, help you focus on what's the most important (it may be quite overwhelming in the beginning). Good luck!

I loved computer stuff since 10year-ish old (my dad bought me an intel 386dx machine), I graduated with my degree in comp science, and YET I don't even work in the computer industry, because I realized that I've no strong logical thinking in coding stuff.
but recently I watched plenty of "a day in my life as data analysts/soft engineer" kind of stuff. It perks me curiously once again.
I will learn more about phyton, SQL stuff, excel data analysis, etc.
thanks for your video. It encourages me to start learning to program.

I started with basic programming as a young teen in the 80s. I then moved to turbo pascal, then turbo C++, in the early 90s, I became a phone technician and started writing DOS applications that I used to program special phone equipment. In the 2000s i did web, javascript, and SQL. Then I got a job as a systems admin. I learned shell scripting. I then started learning to write unix utils in Windows. I started writing tcpip utilities even my own web servers. I did multithreading and parallel programming.

Thank you for a very motivational video! You really struck a chord with me when you mentioned moving to the backend. I'm 53 and learning JavaScript for the first time and loving it. I also think I would be happier working on the backend, but who knows where I'll end up at this stage, lol. I've tried through the years on and off to learn coding, but I work usually really hot, tiring, long hour manual jobs and it's very hard to sit down and code after all that...at least for me. I just recently got approved to move to a 30hr schedule to devote more time to study (Thank God I have really cool bosses). I'm treating it like I have to actually go to a brick-and-mortar school everyday. I may make a bit less money for the short term, but being less exhausted when coming home and having more time to study with a clearer head will prove to be a better ROI in the long run if I just stick to it...even if it seems impossible. This is the first time I've ever asked to be given less hours at any job and I feel like it gives me a lot of accountability to really learn it this time so my boss's courtesy won't be for nothing. Again, thank you for the motivational video.

Im in the same grind right now. I’ve been pushing everyday and reaching people out for two months. It’s been the toughest 2 months in a long time. And keeping your chin up is not as easy every single day. Watching others tell you to keep pushing forward really helps. I’m capable, smart, and I know I work super hard. There’s no way nobody will ever see that and take a chance at me.

I remember my Guidance Counselor in HS talked about how all the AP students weren't smarter then the rest of us they were just willing to work harder then us and we could do the same if we decided to. I started to learn JS in april. My biggest regret is that i only started learning DOM, callbacks and others project base features only 2 months ago. I was doing coding problems on codewars/leetcode and others websites.(And ofc not the hard ones) I dont even know why i didnt start projects sooner cause i think that is the right way of learning. Dont get me wrong coding challenges are very important and they helping me a lot, but u need to have project base experience. Also I started with JS. Everything was fine to the moment when i needed something in CSS and that just sucks. I wanna be frontend developer one day. I think i can get there, but sometimes there's days that i dont know if im smart enough cause 6 months learning and still a beginner. I can do some simple projects like calculator, password generator, small dog page, thats all.... I wanna build netflix clone from 0. :D

6 months and still feel like a beginner… you’re doing fine, you’re not behind. I suggest thinking of a project that interests you particularly or solves a problem of yours or someone near you. It’ll motivate you more than building a cookie cutter clone. BUT make sure it gives you the chance to hone your html, css, and js skills.

I cried while I was watching this video. I'm self teaching HTML CSS JavaScript and React to get a job in tech industry. But I'm having tough time lately to study. So many errors and I sometimes don't know how to fix the errors. I still need to solve some problems in my code. I felt I'm not good at this. But I will keep pushing myself a bit more ☺️ Thanks!

self taught as a little kid in the early 80's, 8 bit, og basic then machine language, assembly, C, C++ and on up. I'm OG old school coding, efficient use of memory and objects. I also studied electronics and took computer science classes later on in college. :But I learned more sitting at a computer figuring out things on my own and in my own way than I ever did taking classes
