HOW TO USE BLACK 3.0 by Stuart Semple

- Use a nice soft brush (not a rubbish scratchy comblike one)
Apply at room temperature 10 - 25 c ( 50 - 77 F)
Use as little paint as possible and spread it out nicely
Allow to dry between coats (at least two hours, overnight is better)
Use a hairdryer to get max blackness
Seal absorbent (porous) things with 25% PVA and 75% Water
Prime shiny (non - absorbent) things with primer or Black 2.0

That dry Black 3.0 is legitimately scary. It's just a complete void of colour. I love it.
convincingPeople so convincing :)
1:36 OMG THANK YOU! I've been waiting for a "explain to me like I'm 5 years old" video. I love this paint, but it's literally the first paint I've ever used in my life.
instagram.com/p/B5jF2idDj1a/ I tried to paint a stormtrooper head, and it literally took about 20 coats, I was not doing it right
edit: everything you said not to do, I did. Cheap brush, gobbed it on, etc
I'm glad it's useful. It's exciting that people are discovering it and using paint for the first time. I just want to make sure everyone has a good experience :)
I just saw on reddit an article about this and Stuart and Anish Kapoor, I’m now fascinated (obsessed) and intrigued and it’s in my a cart right now on color hustle, and I’m not even a real painter or artist. This is so amazing, and I respect Stuart SO much for creating this because Anish got exclusive access to Vanta Black (which is so stupid, he didn’t have anything to do with its creation so I find it gross he got it and wouldn’t “share”). This is affordable and so neat and has so many applications
Yes
It's an industrial paint. Why shouldn't Kapoor buy it, he's perfectly in his rights to do so. Semple has turned his vendetta against a hard working artist into a marketing campaign, and you have simply fallen for it. Black 3.0 is shit. He has put too much pigment in it and you can literally smear it off with your finger. He has even released UA-cam adverts telling people how to "not mess up" when using it. He uses character assassination to make money and that's despicable.
@@keeperofthecheese What are you talking about, the fact Anish bought exclusive rights to Vanta is just indicative of his arrogance. His sculptures look like garbage anyway. Would be better off with someone else.
@@keeperofthecheese Oh shit, we got a Bean Boy defender
@@serenitymoon825 I'm not defending Kapoor. I've actually met him at the tate in London. He's a bellend.
Thank you, genuinely, Mr. Stemple, for not only being a kickass dude, but also explaining painting with acrylics better than my highschool art teacher. He said a lot of things (like, and I literally heard him say something like this, “that cat looks dead”), but he never said not to glob or what kind of brush to use. I’d love to take a class from you!
Thanks for the comprehensive tutorial. I've been sitting on my bottle for months waiting for the right thing to try it on.
I have just used Black v 3.0 to coat the interior surfaces of a very deep lens hood I have made for my digital infrared camera. Amazing material. Makes matt black primer look light grey in comparison. I am so glad you have developed this material for the use of civilian artists. Thank you!
I keep hoping for one that's airbrush compatible, since there are places in telescopes where it would be near impossible to brush it on.
I want to make a model of the alien from 'Attack The Block'. I haven't seen anyone else do it yet maybe because it's a lesser-known movie but it is the perfect subject for using Black 3.0 and also glow in the dark green for their translucent light-up teeth too.
Oh cool - you should do it!
That’s a fantastic movie hope it great! 👍
Love that movie! The Action Lab did a video mixing this paint with the world's brightest glow paint. That might interest you.
ua-cam.com/video/x5L4_GXePuk/v-deo.html
Great movie! How did your alien come out?
Bought some of this months ago! Finally throwing it down tonight
Hold up. Did I miss your video where you used this. I just ordered some, curious to know what you used this for.
How did it go?
Can you please get together with a nail polish company and make a nail gel with the black 3.0? That would be so amazing!
You can paint a layer of black 3.0 in between your base coat and top coat like a color coat; I know many airbrush and detail artists use acrylic paints for their nail art work, so same difference. I’m gonna give it a try on my next set and see how it goes! Hit my up on Twitter if you wanna see! (@artistMG)
That’s such a cool idea
i heard about black 3.0 on the 99% invisible podcast. i didnt realize that black 3 had just came out. cant wait to try it and so excited to support something like this.
Good video 👍
We need a video about the silveriest silver.. With & without COAT.
Okay cool cool I'll get on the case x

Thanks 😊
@@StuartSempleArt ..and Black Gold too maybe...?
Yes please! On all the metals paints!
No, no need to go through the trouble of all that. Just send me a half gallon sample of every paint you have, and I'll do all the testing for you! 😁
Remember- sharing is caring, and if you don’t, Stuart will mock your entire career and ruin your life.
I'm so excited! I just got my first purchase of black 3.0 (and "mirror") delivered today!
One thing concerns me though....
I shook the black 3.0 pretty well ...a little more than I normally would shake enamels and acrylics, simply because I have no idea how long it had been sitting, if stuff had settled a lot, or the nature of the paint, etc.
...and the bottle does say shake well.
When I go to squirt some into a little thimble-sized container for use with my brush, it came out very "gloopy" and thick, with a small portion of it being somewhat watery.
I thought, "okay, it's obviously a thick paint, and I just didn't shake it well enough".
So I turned a paintbrush around backwards, stuck it in and stirred the living snot out of it.
It's still extremely gloopy like a lot of thick lumps, and no amount of stirring or shaking seems to make a difference.
They're not hard lumps of paint the consistency of the gloopy lumpy stuff is about like mayonnaise or jelly, but it is certainly much much thicker than what I'm seeing spread by brush in this video.
What are the chances this has somehow been exposed to too high or too low temperatures, or is it bad batch, or whatever?
It's so frustrating because I want to use it right now but I'm afraid if it is a bad batch that I'll have to send it back and I can't use any of it....
Is this a known problem? Have I just not shaken or stirred enough? Any help is appreciated.
sounds like it may have froze in shipping, ive had other paints do this. mix it extremely well in a blender bottle or magic bullet, them let sit in warm (atleast 75 degree f) room for a hour. this has worked for me with other frozen paints
@@teslacoil4335 yeah thanks for that.
I'll give it a shot.
I know he specifically clarifies that temperature is very important for when it's applied, and I think he even said for storage.
Considering that this is not your regular ol average paint, I didn't know if it would be permanently affected by exposure to temperatures beyond those ranges.
On another note I just discovered today that this is not what I thought it was.
I mean I knew it was black 3.0 and it's Stewart simples third "blackest black" attempt and that at one time it was the "blackest paint in the world."
(Because vanta black is not really a paint..)
What I didn't know is that "musou black" is;
A) NOT just another marketing name for "vanta black".
B) it has absolutely nothing to do with the arrogant douchebag who is so pathetic he can't share a dang coating color.
C) it was actually created after black 3.0, and Stewart simples efforts were it's inspiration!
D)
Thank you for everything you do
Thank you!!!!!
I love you Stuart Temple. We must get married with flowers and bells and dancing girls. A whole Bavarian village will clap and sing and throw rose petals before us. But seriously your contribution to art with this product is amazing. Can’t wait to get some when the world and me get working again.
I find a way to use to this in all my projects. It just adds something that most things I see don't have. I mostly do resin printed figures. It really makes them POP
My Black 3.0 was disappointing after 3 layers of coating, but now I see why... I'll try it again following these instructions. Thanks! :)
Thanks for making this video. I’m the furthest thing from an artist and I’m more confident that the experiment I have planned for this paint will stand a 40% greater chance of success lol.
So excited for what other great thing you and your team will come up with.
Thanks we are working on some neat stuff!
Thank you so much for making this! Sorry for being one of the ignorant people with black 2.0 that made your life harder. I can't wait to use this!
Don't know if it's even possible...but how do you protect the Black from scratches, chips etc. I'm guessing any normal top coat will lessen the darkness.
If there is no normal top coat...are you looking into one ?
Thanks, love the products, absolute joy to use them.
we need a "the clearest clearcoat" product to be invented! I tell people "don't touch my art, it'll get on your fingers" : /
Yeah we've been working on it it's hard. So any topcoat out there at the moment isn't as matte as 3.0 so it makes it reflect light and some of them cause weird reactions. If your pice gets scuffed and looks a little shiny, wipe it with alcohol and that restores is. 3.0 is pretty durable but if it gets scuffed can get shiny, the alcohol is a good fix. Hopefully one day we will nail that topcoat
Stuart Semple thanks for taking the time to reply. All the best.
@@StuartSempleArt Have you tried AK Interactive's Ultra Matte Varnish?
I haven't been able to find any locally, but I hear its very matte and wonder if it would play nice with B3.
Thanks for the video, it's very helpful.
@@AJDeLaRosa no we've not played with it but I'll try and get hold of some and see if it works. We've had no joy with anything else so far!
Hi, what setting you used on the hairdryer (airflow, heat)? It would be useful to know since you mentioned how heat "sensitive" the paint is.
Thanks!
Thank you Stuart !!! I was going to paint some furniture I found on the side of the road.... Now I know what to do to prep it. PVA glue and water to seal it...
Thank you so much for your tutorials, I love your products so much! I can't wait to try out my black 2.0 and 3.0 paints. I also have diamond dust I havent used yet. I have used the heavy metals paints and they are glorious! Keep the wonderful stuff coming, and you are an absolute pleasure to watch and learn from😊❤
Hi! I found this video extremely informative and educational, awesome stuff! One question that I still have is how would you go about putting a protective layer for it? I realize that this isn't common, but should the need arise, do you have any recommendations for protective products to coat Black 3.0 without ruining it ?
There really needs to be a sealer on it because it rubs off on everything even after it is thoroughly dry. It will also reconstitute if it gets wet. (It also does reflect some light, especially when viewed at certain angles, but that's another whole issue.)
@@KnittingSkole I really appreicate you replying despite it being about a year since my original comment. I've been reconsidering doing this for some time so it is quite informative still. Thank you!
What about for fabric? I was thinking about blacking out a pair of Chuck Taylors. Traditional canvas rules or absorbent surface rules? Also, thank you for the really helpful videos!
I've seen shoes on Reddit painted with it. I do believe it's possible, I just don't know what you'd seal it with. I've never painted shoes, though. Also keep in mind - this stuff is really matte, so I would think you would only want to wear them under super clean situations.
I was thinking leather ???
@@vvsbee5694 Probably not viable if you intend to do something with the leather. I do leather sneaker painting and the paints are really specialized. They need to stretch without cracking in a way that you don't see out of standard acrylics.
I'll do some experimenting! Thanks for advice guys👍🏾
@@TheAceJustice any recommendations on primar for leather painting plz?
I'm kinda curious for a bit more information here... Notably, I know Black 2 can be thinned with water, but what about 3? I work primarily with miniatures, and have seen a few videos playing with it from the tube, but I'm wondering about established best practices. Can this be thinned with water, or would something more along the lines of an airbrush thinner be more appropriate? Does it play nice with other media and additives, like drying retarder or flow improver? Does it mind living on a wet palette for extended periods? How much of the impact is lost if you varnish over it? Would this be a better or worse base coat for interference paints?
So many questions, so much stuff to try, so many years turning in my head...
Hi there. First of all, can't wait to finally put my hands on this paint. It's on its way, so I'm really excited.
Secondly:
As I'm just about to work on a project, which is painting my guitar with BLK 3.0, I've a very important question:
Can you paint using an artistic airbrush, and if so, what is the proper agent to thin it with?
Also which varnish should I use afterwards? I mean, of course it's matte finish, but it'd be great if you have any suggestions.
Also I wish you could possibly make a video on how to paint it using airbrush.
I will try to make a video and will share as soon as it's ready.
Cheers , you're doing great job !
So glad I am watching this before my order comes.
Just received mine…super excited, loved the packaging and I will not share with beanboy. Thank you for the laugh lol
Thank you for the video! You mentioned you didn't want to insult anyone with explaining to them the basics...but I found it helpful (I've painted models before, but never used any nifty "artist" paints). Buying and supporting...keep coming out with awesome products!
Lovely video Stuart. I'm looking forward to trying your paints!
Partner just got me a bottle of this stuff and I can't wait to try it out. I set up a quick low Earth orbit small painting and will give it the first run tonight. My studio is too hot which wasn't something I considered, so have to do that part in the house. Looking forward to seeing what it does.
You were just the right person to give this demonstration. Thanks!
I love Stuart! 😁😘 Art for life. Thank you for your contribution to the art world.
Just reviewed this paint, can't believe how much blacker it is than my other black paints! Great product!
I also did what I call a Void Trooper, using the final faction Ruck action figure, and it's frekkin weird to look at, I love it
Great information, thank you. I just ordered a bottle of 3.0 a couple of days ago. I’m really looking forward to using it. Lots of fun ideas popping into my head.
Awesome Schißbe!
I’m going to paint a whole bookshelf with this can’t wait to see how it looks
We are going to try using this as paint in our cinema room! We have tried chalkboard paint but still reflective….ordering the small pot to test it…..then hopefully we can order the larger bottle if it works! Thank you for all the tips!
I'm gonna guess 'bone' constitutes a porous material! So seal with PVA before painting? 🤔
Yeah I'd have thought so
@@StuartSempleArt cheers dude! 😊👍
Hey if you ever find a clear coat that does not extort the blackness of the black 3.0 I would love to try it out for a car paint job
Sounds like a good way to lose ur car at night. Haha
Now if we can only figure out how to apply the pigment to fabric reliably . . .
I need to live out my goth fantasies lol
Add a fabric medium like the kind they sell at Joann’s or in the Walmart craft aisle. It turns any acrylic paint into a stretchy wash-proof tshirt that acts just like a screen-print!
Thank you for the video examples! I always learn better from watching and practicing than just reading
I'm gonna paint one of those magnetically levitating moons with this stuff. Can't wait to get everything together and try this out!
how's the results?
Thomas I tried on a ping pong ball before I went and got another moon. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite dark enough to get the dimensionless void I was going for. I did all the things: black 2 as primer, then two coats of black 3 with hair dryer and a night to dry between layers.
@@truvc so it wasn't as dark as you expected? what primer did you use?
Haryo25 I put black 2.0 on as a primer, dried it with a hair dryer and then left it overnight and came back and put on a coat of black 3.0, blow dried it and left it overnight. Then repeated.
It’s definitely very black. Black 3.0 absorbs 99% of light. But the ball still has clear dimension when held at arms length. If the ball is in any direct light the illuminated side is clearly brighter than the side in shadow.
@@truvc so you mean that if illuminating directly, the paint didn't completely absorb the light?
Thank you so much for the helpful tutorial!
I do have a bit of a question though...
Would this paint be able to fare well on shoes?
Great video. All content, no fluff.
I’ve been testing out this product for going on years now, have followed all the instructions and have received new bottles and it still turns white. Wish it was actually usable
Very helpful. Thanks for the upload Stuart!
How would it hold up on a pair of shoes? 🤔🤔🤔
We stan stuart semple ❤
Great how-to video. We love Black 3.0!
Can you use it with an airbrush? What thinning medium can you use that doesn’t mess with the nano particles?
I would also like to see an answer to this question, but something tells me it's probably a no-go.
Yeah it's fine loads of people do it. BUT a few points, you thin with water... and you want a really thin light coat and leave it to dry for a long time before you re-coat. It's easy with an airbrush to get too much on and then it breaks. In most cases a brush will have easily as a good a finish, it's just if your object is very complex with little nooks and crannies an airbrush can help.
Thank you for everything that you do. just ordered my first paint from you. looking forward to getting more.
I have recently received my order for Black 3.0, so here I am to learn myself how to use it. I want to use it on a tee shirt, so I need some guidance.
US newbie here. I bought some KILLS Premium and had is project piece tinted the blackest color the store had. Obviously, it isn't black enough. I thought If I would use such a dry primer I could stretch out some BLACK-3 so I can order enough BLACK-3 to cover this primed area of about 32 sq feet. What size bottle and how many do I need? After watching this video I will now seal it over the primer just to make sure. Thank You for your shared knowledge
Loved the video, very informative. I would like to spray Black 3.0 through my airbrush. Will that be ok?
finally a paint to match my soul
I just ordered some 3.0 yesterday and I am excited for it to come in what I’m going to do with it is try to make a painting of a black hole and if I like it some day al buy blk 2.0
Thanks for this super basic instructional video. it was exactly what I needed to see!
Can you use this on something like jewelry? I want to paint a stainless steel bracelet but I’m wondering if it will just rub off.
Is there any way I can use BLACK 3.0 to dye fabric ? I know acrylic isnt best, but do you have a recommendation ? I need the blackest clothes.
Wonderful video, thank you for all the tips 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Anyone else here from the Citation Needed podcast?
Amazing work on the paint!
What about walls? I would like to paint one of my room walls with black 3.0, my walls are concrete with a layer of paint already on it. Do I treat it as a shiny surface?
depends on the paint but rub the walls with the roughest sandpaper available just to be safe
If you do that your room will be extremely dark, you won’t be able to use it.
Someone did this in another video on UA-cam and I don’t recommend it. It was so black the lightbulb only lit up his face. You won’t be able to see anything
Holy shit, thank you so much for this! I wanted to grab some for furniture accents but was really intimidated by my lack of painting experience.
Exactly what I'm looking for for my VOID photography! Thank you!
I'm starting to make paper mache masks and I am going to be using black 3.0 for two separate masks I'm going to make. One mask I am going to make completely black compleate with black eye mesh so I can wear it with hoods and other things so that it looks like my face disappears in the shadows of the hood. I think that would work well for a nazgul cosplay. The other one I want to do is one with the yellow sign in the center and then painting the rest of the mask with black 3.0 that way the yellow really pops~
Early enough that yt says there's only 1 veiw! Which is a surprise for me, lol
Edit: We stan an artist who tells us not to put wet paint on slightly wet paint :))
Aww thank you!

The first time was my prediction of how awesome The Phantom Menace was going to be.
The second was the 2016 U.S. Presidential election.
This was the third.
I did not watch any videos other than a TicTok ad about this stuff.
Via trial and error I can confirm EVERYTHING in this video is dead on balls accurate!
LOVE this stuff.
I'm gonna buy 1 of everything Stuart Semple makes!
One question: what's the best way to seal it? I'm thinking about using MATTE MODPODGE because I have no idea where to start or what would work best.
At 7:00 in... mine doesnt paint like that at all... really soft brush is still leaving heaps of brush marks.. mine also looks heaps runnier out of the bottle :/
Hey Stuart -- what about coating the exterior surface of a ring, such as a plain wedding band that's made of metal or even carbon fiber? A few questions occur to me:
1. How much abrasion-resistance would it have while being worn?
2. Would paint adhesion be improved by roughing-up the surface a bit, to provide more "tooth"?
3. If it got chipped or worn-off, could any bare areas be touched-up later?
4. Would dried Black 3.0 still be water-soluble (e.g., would hand-washing or sweat degrade it)?
5. Finally, would the drying process or adhesion be improved by it being placed in an oven (say, 40-50 degrees Celsius) for a day or two?
Based on the properties of the paint... all of the above would not work at all. This paint is meant for something that basically acts as artwork... in other words just a display piece.
What are your tips for using it over an oil painting? I’m guessing the oil paint would constitute as non-porous but I’d hate to put gesso over my painting unless it’s absolutely necessary 😥
Stuart sent this as I wait for our order of a couple bottles of black 3. My son talk of vanta and that it was used on a car? I’m getting 1 bottle for him and 1 for me.
We are not painters, just nerds.
1) any recommendation on a primer for non absorbent items other than black 2? We didn’t order that.
2) Any advice for a cool use of Black 3 to show off its capabilities / optical illusion?
I thought of a ‘hole’ in the top of a cardboard box? And telling people their Christmas gift is inside. See how many actually try to reach into the hole :-).
I also know on Stuart’s website a mask is painted black on one side and on the back you can see that it is contoured.
And in the black 2 video - the unicorn.
Any other suggestions?
Has there been much done with using black 3.0 for thin lines in a painting rather than a large solid area?
Roses are red, this video is nifty. He actually starts painting at 4:50
I bought some of this paint a few months ago and was really disappointed with the results.
I bought a pair of goggles and wanted to paint the inside because the shiny plastic surface gave off way too much glare while wearing them.
It's been pretty hot lately so I keep my apartment at 72° F. throught the day, which falls within the recommended temperature storage and usage.
I used a fine watercolor brush to paint the goggles and I've always been one to paint lightly and spread my paint as far as it goes.
I did a light coat of regular black acrylic on one of the goggles one morning and left it to dry.
The next morning I did a light coat of Black 3.0 and again left it to dry for one day.
On the third morning I applied another coat of Black 3.0 and again just left it out to dry
And on the fourth day the goggles were still not really looking black at all so I did another coat of Black 3.0
On the fifth morning the paint was still looking pretty light. I knew I was using and storing tha paint at the right temperature, I was using a good brush, I wasn't clumping the paint into the object and I was letting it dry for more than enough time between coats. So I figured I wasn't shaking the paint well enough. This paint is really thick and I figured it wasn't mixing well inside the tiny bottle it came in. So I poured all the paint out into a jar and put a little bit of water into the bottle to shake the last bit of pigment off its walls.
I primed a second pair of goggles with regular acrylic black paint and let it sit for a day.
Next day I mixed the paint inside the jar for a good 5 minutes using a palette knife and did a thin coat of Balck 3.0, then did another two coats of 3.0 one day apart from one another.
Still, the paint wasn't anywhere near black enough. Even in a dimly lit room, you can still see all the details on the surface of the goggles and the paint itself looks dark gray at best.
It's by far the mattest paint I've ever used but I cant even call it "black".
The paint looks black when I apply it but dries out significantly lighter.
Maybe I got a bad batch, I know these paints are hand made, but it was very disappointing nonetheless.
did you make sure to sand before applying and to use a matt black primer?
Wow thank you so much. I'm not any kind of artist, so this is very helpful!
Is Stuart Semple related to The Action Lab? Is Stuart Semple Banksy!?
Can it be bleneded into other colors or used in overlays? You can only do so much with a flat swatch.
Hi Stuart, love the motivation for the paint and purchased a bottle. I'm looking to use a paint gun coat a small, cylindrical piece of aluminum by applying a coat of the 2.0, and then 3.0 as suggested in this video. Any recommendations for the ratio of paint/water to get the cleanest coat for a spray gun? My goal is to apply the thinnest, most even coat (using your paint to limit reflections in a science experiment where increasing the thickness can drastically effect the results). I plan on messing around with it to find the best ratio for my application, but it would be great if I had a starting point. Thank you!
Did you prime the silver spoon with pva glue as well before applying the Black 2, or did you just put Black 2 directly on the spoon?
I want to paint a piece of plexiglass to use as a photography background, i already ordered 2 bottles of blk3.0 any other options to prime the surface for the 3.0?
I just received my first Litre! so excited.
hypothetically, if i made a cloth face mask and then painted the outside of the mask with a few layers of black 3.0, would there be any potential health risks associated with that? i'd wait for the paint to completely dry/cure, wouldn't wear it outdoors, and would otherwise follow all the rules and tips stated in this video. i'm just worried that the moisture on my breath might 'rehydrate' the paint and cause me to inhale it, or something else like that. love your work btw, and i'd love to be able to use it in my own. thank you!
It's an acrylic paint which is a polymer. It should not rehydrate under any circumstances.
Cool stuff, great vid, ok so prime with 2? Then Coat w 3?
Hi, i am about to order back 3 but was wondering if you can apply it on the wall, over a coat of white paint?
Hi I'm a cross the pond n finally got my Black3. I watched your video on use. You don't say anything about additives. Can you add flotrol/liquitex mediums/water? Clean up? water? Thank you for your assistance.
Hi I’m super curious, can you please make a video showing what happens if you gloss coat over the black 3.0 paint?
Can i varnish over this product? Should i apply it on top of varnish? I use golds isolation coat and i prefer high gloss varnish, is there a varnish that works better for this product?
Can you use fine tipped brushes. Also for the blackest ink can you use dip pens with the ink?
This stuff looks amazing! When you say to prime metal, then you say you like to use Black 2.0 first, is that after primer or AS a primer for the Black 3.0?
Hey, I'm a student making a magazine on Vantablack (inspired by the 99% invisible podcast). I plan on using your Black 3.0 on the front cover and the Pinkest Pink on the rear. Any advice on how to keep it in good condition once it's dry?
I would like to know can you use this to paint your apartment or house with it the interior of your apartment on house?
Thats what I came here to ask! I'd paint an entire room with this then use the glow paint Lit over to really get it to pop.
@@skornthesnake6935 facts ...that would be dope
Hopefully I can receive an answer to my question... Can Black 3.0 be sanded down on on wood.?
There are streaks that I would like to smooth out but unsure if sanding would have a negative affect on it... Thanks.
Hello Stuart, I am thinking of using it on t shirts, will it stock properly without any previous priming?
