@user-vx8vk9vq8e Africa is undergoing a transitional phase. 150 years ago, most of sub-Saharan Africa was ruled by kings, and the currency was cattle. This is similar to Europe 2500 years ago. It took Europe 2500 years to evolve the social conscience that we see today. Africa has been self-governing for about 50 years (on average), and we are already seeing some nations beginning to grow a sense of identity and moral compass.
Ethiopia and Rwanda are starting to measure their politicians against a backdrop of competence, and this will definitely bear fruit. Nigeria is beginning to develop a “switched on” youth who will start to hold the nation's officials accountable for service delivery, and they will also start to demand an end to corruption.
Sadly, the further south you go, the younger the democracies. I believe that the South African economy will still get worse, and it may drag its neighbours down with it before it begins the process of rebuilding after a couple of decades of nepotism and corruption.
If, after WWII, the Europeans had enforced a process of power sharing, coupled with the same sort of social programs being rolled out in the USA in the ’60s to combat segregation; I believe that by the year 2000, people in Africa would have been electing governments that were capable and as racially mixed as the countries themselves. Unfortunately, the European powers were in such a hurry to get out of Africa. They just upped and left.
There is simply no way to fast track the process of learning to handle the power that comes with being elected president when you were born into a society that saw you as a gardener. The result is what we see today.
