Might seem oddly specific, but the second mechanism looks a lot like Grim Matchstick from cuphead in it's second phase.
How does 4 fill in the middle?
Basically rotating a bunch of identical triangles using a gear mechanism, tbh I don't know either, look up an iris shutter mechanism.

I think not. The smaller gear that holds the yellow horn is not in contact with the main gear. It is just added to reverses direction of the yellow horn.
