  • Chalta Hai INDIA: When 'It's OK!' is Not OK
India once commanded 30 per cent share of the global GDP and led the world in most fields. But today the country is sadly a 'developing nation'. People often attribute India's sluggish progress to the Chalta Hai mindset of the masses. The book "Chalta Hai India" tests this hypothesis and goes to the root of the problem.
Are we really a Chalta Hai nation? Is Chalta Hai ingrained in our DNA or it can be easily exterminated? Will this attitude stop India from becoming a global power? How can we root out Chalta Hai from the society?
Alpesh Patel delves into this quirky Indian approach and answers these questions by examining the country’s pace of progress in fields such as education, infrastructure, films and sports since Independence. The book revisits our cultural, ideological and political history over three millennia to trace the roots of the Chalta Hai attitude of Indians. Interesting facts and unsettling inferences force the reader to introspect and awaken him to the need for an urgent action. Finally, the book charts out methods and suggestions on how to get rid of the Chalta Hai attitude and take India closer to the dream of becoming a developed nation.
Eminent thinker and intellectual Shri Rajiv Malhotra shares his views with author Alpesh Patel.
    About Speakers:

Reminds me of my dad with whom I worked for some time during our family business. He would refuse to settle for anything less than perfect often leaving me frustrated and exasperated. Took a few years to realize what valuable lessons were those. Great job Alpesh on picking such a transformational topic. One may think this book is about changing a nation but I think it starts with changing onself.

When I was a child, the teachers had a great tolerance for errors and mistakes such that it became fine if you didn't perform perfectly. This instilled in me the "Chalta hai" attitude. Every time that I worked on something I would always set a negative offset in my mind that would stop me achieving full potential. I understand that parents and teachers wish not to demotivate children, but telling a child "You did good" instead of "You can do better" certainly is worse. I am an evidence of that.

The chalta hai attitude comes from lack of tapasya. Indians don't work hard in India due to the ecosystem that has evolved during the past 70 yrs. If your progress/rewards r not associated with your merits but instead associated you belonging to a certain community then it is evident that the society won't produce the best humans.
In German they say, "OHNE FLEISS, KEIN PREIS" meaning there is no substitute for hard work.

Great discussion. However I have to disagree on one point. Whenever I had done the due diligence and worked with people who share my values on quality, I have found them in India whether it is civil engineers or plumbers or electricians or drivers. They are in general not doing well monetarily as people want cheap and a quickie work. As consumers the people have to demand better

This is great initiative to atleast bring first the change in the thoughts of the rashtra at large and with divines will the nation wide change in thought will also manifest in action .
Given the magnitude of the India's geography ,and troubles Its hard for a young individual to find where to start from and in this regard I will like to mention the idea of Rajiv Malhotra paraphrased in my words to ignite the spark in myself and all others .
5 things for the Indian youth
    1) Grand narrative ( finding out ,who we were ,who we are and what we aspire to be as a rashtra)
    2) Sankalpa , forming a resolve in context of the grand narrative
    3) Tapasya - getting out of comfort zone and work on individual contribution towards the grand narrative in any field of expertise of the individual
    4) Sangha - Connecting and forming a network of people of similar interest
    5) yagya - this whole idea of grand narrative is a yagya which requires a sanklpa ,individuals coming together with their own Tapasya and then these individuals becoming a group and taking and the whole experience becoming a grand yagya .

The consumer behavior mentioned by Rajiv ji has more to do with Nehruvian socialist closed economy post-independence, rather than the "sepoy mindset". It is evident in Rajivji's own example, wherever there was government on the supply side, the consumer behavior was "chalta hai". However in markets such as clothing and food, where there is limited government control, the consumer behavior is different. I think the "chalta hai" attitude will go away we gradually move towards a market economy.

Self criticism is good. We have to improve a lot, no doubt.
Purvapaksha: Western work ethic is not always great. Anybody in USA who had to deal with a plumber, contractor etc. can tell how honest they are (not). CBS canada marketplace series, available on UA-cam exposes dishonesty and non-professional attitude in every aspect of their society. So chors and lazy bums are everywhere. As Rajiv Malhotra says western system of checks and balances keeps things working better, but only a little better if at all, in my opinion. Our historical baggage of despotic colonization, resultant poverty, slow recovery, large population and inefficient system are mainly responsible for us being behind the curve.

When we use spiritual teachings to avoid responding to everyday reality in a responsible way we are engaging in "level confusion." We must be spiritual in our mind while responding normally at the level of the world. This is what Krsna was teaching Arjuna on the battlefield when he was reluctant to fight. Yes, the spirit cannot be harmed but the body can and it is our duty to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our nation from harm while we are still living in this illusion.

we are forest where it is impossible to see beyond few meters . hence local optimization/inward looking. what you caanot see cannot be dealt with. in desert you can see far. hence institutional strategy building is possible.

Hi Maddy , you said the right thing but then at once said government should listen to this. This is exactly what Rajiv is pointing out. Don’t blame the government. One should take the responsibility for oneself and demand the best and not to put up with mediocracy first starting in one’s personal life and not to pass the buck on to government or somebody else.

I cannot agree more with Rajivji. This attitude all pervasive, be it corporate working or social life. This is very unfortunate. I wish, our younger generation realises this and systematically dismantle Jugaad culture

In India footpaths are damaged several times in a year for road-widening followed by laying pipe for water supply followed by laying cable for telephone followed by laying of electric cable and finally dug for drainage system.Chalta Hai India.

I don't think all people all morons.. Every type of people found in every society.. If I take one example.. Saving Environment.. Western only doing speeches at UN.. But here in India.. Every state found people who one handily grown whole forest... How many forest are in western & developed countries.. If still there forest.. How many animals found there...
In india, Maharashtra.. There is village level water conservation program happening.. Its water cup by Paani Foundation..
There is major reforms in organic farming..
You can't compare with small country.. We must only compared only with china on scale of infrastructure..still they ahead because no democracy..

Rajivji has imbibed a degree of Protestant perfectionism in being in US for a long time! Unbroken civilizational wisdom has inculcated the Chalta hai mind to the Indians! It is a philosophical conflict of linear time of the Western concept verses the cyclical time of India! No one is in a hurry and everything goes chalta! The ‘time keepers’ of the West also keep regular appointments with the therapists! The bottom line is the perception of the totality of the meaning of life! Is it time management or life management?!

BJP should now concentrate on reversing education. And not just history, but introducing vedic maths, teaching tolerance, learning scientifically advanced concepts from ancient India, and becoming self reliant. If ancient Indians could do plastic surgery why cannt we produce sophisticated machinery instead of importing from China?
We dont need Jalebi ministers. need strong ministers to support Modi.
