  • This video shows the refinishing process of a vintage 1969 Gibson 335! This guitar was in very poor condition to start with, but now has a second chance at life and a new beginning! Complete with a new paint job of nitro lacquer and a completed headstock! Let me know what you think of how it turned out! As always, thanks for watching! 🎸

      @@guitarcpr My pleasure! One thing I might add, as to your precise attention to detail, is how you "cut to the chase" so to speak, explaining how you were doing the job step by step, instead of having it be like a physics lesson!
      Looking forward to more content!

      Thanks man!! Hahaha yes! I definitely try to get to the point, just for attention span sake lol. I try to give the points you need without throwing a bunch of stuff at you. Send me an email or an Instagram message when you get a chance, I’d love to send you some business cards and guitar picks! Thanks again for your comments, it helps to know I’m moving in the right direction. 🙂

      Also, the scraping stick to leather couches and then the couch also requires scraping.

    Great refinish job. I know some would say that a vintage guitar should never be refinished, but sometimes it is a must. 2 Qs: 1. Would it make sense to mask the bindings so they don't have to be scraped? 2. Where can I get clear nitro lacquer that isn't in a spray can in the USA? I like the control of a spray gun over an unpredictable spray can. Thanks!

    • @guitarcpr
      @guitarcpr  Місяць тому

      Thank you!! Yes, I have gotten that from a few people, which is expected. But yes I agree, this guitar made my entire house smell like mold lol, just from being in the house. Which many don’t get when they see pics or a video lol, so this was one that was in desperate need. Yes, you definitely could tape off the binding. I personally usually don’t, just in fear of pulling off any paint I don’t want to come off. I’m sure eventually I’ll get into just taping the binding sides and scraping the top. I just gotta find a good tape. I use Mohawk Stringed Instrument Lacquer, I buy it by the gallon at Sherwin Williams. However, the store needs to sell industrial finishes, most do not unfortunately. I’m sure many websites may sell it though. They also have a quart size at Woodcraft, if you have any of those stores near you. I understand, you definitely have more control with a gun, and I do not thin it down, like many that come in a spray can. Thanks!!

    That's some great work, you are right to be proud of it! Ive never seen anyone use stencils / templates for the headstock inlays before. Could you explain how you did those? I might steal that idea to help with my refinish of a modern 335

    • @guitarcpr
      @guitarcpr  16 днів тому +1

      Thank you! I greatly appreciate it! Most companies use a decal of some sort for the logos. Gibson has veneers and some are silkscreened. However this guitar was a solid block inlay. From some research, I found they would place a stencil of some sort, spray the black lacquer, then clean it up after. So I placed a vinyl decal of Gibson’s logo, sprayed the black, then removed the decal. Their logo changed quite a bit through the years and from that time, there was no “dot” in the “i” from what I’ve found. Plus there was no room for it in the MOP inlay either so it seems correct. Hope this helps! I’d love to see what you’re working on! Feel free to message me on Instagram! 🙂

    Awesome work. Truly amazing. Quick question, I'm assuming since it's a maple top and back you skipped the vinyl sealer, but did the neck (which is mohagany) get sealed? Oh, and that stringed instrument lacquer is a game changer. I was using the Finisher's Choice (M612-25806) and I find that the Classic (M610-1406) cuts coats by half.
    Again, awesome work. 👌🏻

    • @guitarcpr
      @guitarcpr  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you!! I did not use any sealer on this guitar, I typically don’t to be honest. I tend to just load up on the lacquer and let it settle a while. The stringed instrument lacquer really is a game changer! I love how thick it sprays on and with a 90 sheen, you can’t beat it! I also used to use the classic haha, now we both know the better option! Thanks again! 🤘

      If you made Michelle Pfifer 50 years younger, you would have to remove the fillings, caps, crowns, implants, and botox, but what you ended up with would be so worth it.

    what kind of spray gun do you use (make and model please). is it just a regular paint sprayer you can get from a hardware store or is it something specifically made for spraying lacquer? thanks

    • @guitarcpr
      @guitarcpr  Місяць тому +1

      It is an automotive siphon feed gun from Central Pneumatic (Harbor Freight). I made sure that it had a 2mm needle, this way I don’t have to worry about reducing the lacquer. It works great with metal flake as well!
